Places to stay in Tomintoul

Places to stay in Tomintoul
Situated just 5 miles from Tomintoul, the highest village in the Highlands and nestled into the wooded hillsides of The Braes of Glenlivet in the North East quadrant of the Cairngorms National Park. From pleasant walking right on your doorstep to fishing, cycling, skiing, canoeing, the whisky & castle trails and lots more to discover, there is something for everyone in the region. Whatever your passion you can rest assured that peace & tranquility await you here at the end of each exciting day.
COVID 19 (CORONA VIRUS) UPDATE: 23rd March 2020. Due to further restrictions imposed today, we will not be accepting bookings before 1st May 2020. If you wish to visit after that date please do book but be aware that if the situation remains the same or worsens, then your booking may have to be cancelled. Wendy & Mike offer respectful guests who share the airbnb ethos, exclusive use of our recently refurbished (October 2019) self catering chalet which sits within our cottage grounds and has its own pedestrian and vehicle access as well as off road parking. With fabulous views of the Brae and it's wooded hillsides, you can enjoy the peace of the countryside whilst being in easy reach of local amenities. Tomintoul (our nearest village) is just 8 minutes by car; there you will find pubs, a general store and post office and two restaurants. There are also two cafes, outdoor clothing & unusual gift shop and a gallery. The Whiskey Castle is a must see whether or not this is your tipple. Information on the area can be found both in the Crown Estates ranger centre & the Tomintoul Discovery Centre. Plenty of folk make this their base for up to a week as there is so much to see & do up here. Within a 90 minute drive lies the whole north east coast with it's myriad of beaches and interesting villages, the Black Isle and of course Loch Ness. If whisky is your thing then you are at the centre of tasting heaven; The Glenlivet is just 10 minutes away. Total privacy is assured. Whisky or Castles, Mountain tops or Lochs, it's all yours here at The Couples Retreat. I have been asked by previous guests to point out that there are animals around the area and that you might hear them at night. There are sheep & cows in the adjacent fields, we are also likely to have stoat, fox, vole, mice, rabbit, hare and deer in the grounds and quite close to the property. We also have owls that hoot at night (yes I'm laughing too).
Being situated on The Crowns' Glenlivet estate in The Cairngorms National Park has many benefits for the traveler, but the main reasons most people come here are the peace & quiet, stunning views and wildlife. If it is outdoor activities you crave then they are also here in abundance, visit the Glenlivet Estate or Cairngorms websites to find your passion.

  • Lovely self-catering cottage with a big comfortable bed. Perfect for a couples retreat as the name suggests. Wendy greeted us when we arrived and gave us some visiting tips. Clean quiet place with a private entrance that is well lit at night. We got our food supplies at local town Tomnavoulin. Wendy 's place is well equip for self catering. Perfect location. It's a short drive to the Scalan heritage trail. We also did Carn Daimh forest trail which is about 10min drive away. Glenlivet distillery is also nearby. Definitely worth a tour if you are a whisky fan.

A beautifully renovated Mill surrounded by farmland and hills. We are ideally located on the Glenlivet Estate in the Cairngorms National Park. Our Mill is a gorgeous home-away-from-home option! Whether you are in need of a peaceful weekend retreat or on a family vacation the Mill is the perfect place to stay in comfort and style. The casual luxury of the Mill will take your breath away and put you at ease! Look no further...the Mill is the perfect self catering holiday destination for you!
Auchnascraw Mill was built around the 1830s and was used for grinding oats. It was a working Mill until the mid 1940s. Lots of original features of the Mill have been incorporated into the renovation to maintain its character. Look for details like the exposed stone walls, use of millstones, gear wheel and unique ironwork. The living room features the original flagstone floors and there is underfloor heating throughout the entire downstairs. Keep cozy in front of the wood stove in the living room, while enjoying panoramic views out each and every window. The Mill has been professionally decorated with high-quality furnishings and accessories throughout. The kitchen features top-of the-line appliances (induction range & cooker, dishwasher, microwave, fridge/freezer, toaster, kettle, coffee maker) and is fully equipped for all your cooking needs. You will sleep well in either of our comfortable bedrooms! The master bedroom has a super-king size pillow-top mattress and sofa for lounging. The second bedroom has two single beds with pillow-top mattresses that can be zipped together to create another super-king size bed (please let us know how you would like these beds made up). There is also a sofa bed that can be made into a king-size bed in the upstairs nook between the two bedrooms, which can sleep an additional two people. Currently we do not have a TV but there is free wi-fi. The Mill is also equipped for family fun with lots of games, books and toys to enjoy. There is a washer and dryer in our utility room provided for your convenience.
Auchnascraw Mill is situated in what is locally known as "The Braes of Glenlivet," braes meaning hills, which you can see in every direction. There are many things to do right on your doorstep, from walking, cycling and wildlife watching to just relaxing and enjoying the views of the surrounding Ladder Hills. You can walk to the Scalan and there are many other waymarked walking/cycling routes, including the Smugglers Trails. We are just over a ten minute drive from the village of Tomintoul, known as the "Highest Village in the Highlands" where there are a few shops, cafes, pubs, a restaurant, and art galleries. There is a tourist information centre with a museum and the Glenlivet Estate Office which both have lots of information about the area. Well worth a visit! The Mill is also centrally located for: walking, mountain biking, fishing, golfing, wildlife watching, whisky trails, skiing at the Lecht and Cairngorms, visiting the castle routes (Drumin, Corgarff, Ballindalloch and Balvenie to name a few), coastal trails, many towns and more! You can explore the Highlands, Moray coastline, Cairngorms, and Royal Deeside in day-trips from the Mill and look forward to coming back to relax at the end of your day. Here are some distances to some popular towns/sight seeing destinations: •15 minutes to the world famous The Glenlivet Distillery •20 mintues from Glenlivet Mountain Bike Centre (great trails and a super cafe) •30 minutes to Grantown-on-Spey, Aberlour & Dufftown •45 minutes to Aviemore and the Cairngorms •50 minutes to Elgin, Huntly, Fochabers, Forres •1 hour to the Moray Coast/Moray Firth (Lossiemouth, Findhorn, Spey Bay, Nairn, Burghead, Portknockie, Cullen) •75 minutes to Inverness and 90 minutes to Loch Ness
  • The mill is a stunning place to stay with amazing views. It is well equipped so that you can bring groceries with you and be able to cook just about anything. There is also a good selection of games and books for a rainy day or just enjoy sitting by the log fire. In good weather the location makes it easy to go for walks through the cairngorms which are a must see if you are staying here! The mill is spotless and has a lot of character to make for a cozy place to be

  • This is a place that has to be seen to be believed. The attention to detail that's gone into renovating the mill and the outstanding hospitality from Megan and Sean have made our stay here over New Years an absolute delight. Whether you come in summer, winter or in between - if this is your home in the Scottish highlands, you're in for a treat!

    Elena2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay in the old mill. Would highly recommend!

    Daniel2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • The mill house is a beautiful place for a get away. We were just a couple but it could hold 4-6 people as a group comfortably. The decoration is so tasteful and the original mill features are really cool. With a fire and under floor heating it is so cosy and the lounge area and outside area are great for hanging out there. The kitchen has EVERYTHING you could possibly want to use - you’d probably have all the tools you’d need for making a Christmas dinner! There’s lots of information in the house about local walks and activities from this remote location. We couldn’t have asked for a better property for our trip! Thank you for having us!

    Susan2019-12-06T00:00:00Z
  • A warm welcome and stunning property and location.

    Karen2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • This renovated Mill will surpass your expectations. Amazing architecture, attention to detail (fresh flowers in many of the windows), beauty views from every window in every room. Megan and Sean thought of every single thing a guest might need, and I mean everything! Greeted by Megan with a scrumptious lemon bread, logs in the hearth ready to burn. Heated floors were to die for. Megan and Sean are definitely superhosts and we cannot wait to come back to this beautiful haven in the Cairngorms. Barb, Ari and Alexis

    Bj2019-10-11T00:00:00Z
  • An amazing experience, the house is beautifully decorated, comfortable and clean. Megan and Sean are formidable hosts, with small details that made the whole difference. My only regret is that we didn't stay any longer !

    Marc2019-09-18T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutly fabulous!! Megan & Sean were fabulous hosts. The old mill is lovely, felt at home the moment we walked in the door. Centrally located in the heart of whiskey country but off the beaten path. We cannot wait to book again!

Wild Farm Cottage is situated on the beautiful Glenlivet Estate in the Cairngorms National Park. Only three miles north of Tomintoul, the location of the cottage is both exclusive and remote with a hot tub, sauna and plunge pool included.
Whether you want to watch local wildlife, be energetic around the local Glenlivet Mountain Bike Trails, fish in the nearby lochan or just relax in the hot tub and sauna, Wild Farm Cottage is the perfect location. There is plenty to see and do in the area. 'A wonderful haven' - Tony, Andrea, Izzy and Sophie, Oct 2015 'A perfect place to relax and unwind' - Lesley and Helen, Sept 2015 'One of the best views in the whole of Scotland' - Jon, Kirstie and Evie, August 2015 'A stunningly beautiful place and a great place to experience nature' - Greg and Paul, July 2015
The closest village is Tomintoul which is three miles away. It has a good pub but you may wish to do your grocery shopping in a bigger town (Aviemore or Grantown) before your arrival. The remote site of the cottage is great for wildlife, including roe deer, red deer, brown hares, pine marten, wild cat ( very shy ), rabbits, buzzards, osprey fishing in summer, kestrel, hen harrier, tawny owl, barn owl, short eared owl, raven, blue tits, coal tits, great tits, chaffinches and many more.
  • Lovely cottage in a beautiful setting.

    Fern2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing cottage with beautiful views. We stayed 10 nights for our honeymoon. The hot tub and sauna were very relaxing and we really enjoyed the games room too. Most of all we loved the wildlife around the cottage. So many deer and birds, we were entertained for hours. Tilly was very helpful and even came and refreshed the hot tub water for us during our stay. I also got the chance to read 2 of her books about reindeer which were very interesting. I'm sure we will be returning soon!

    Rebekah2019-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • It is a great place. In a remote valley. We had it for my husbands 30th birthday and it was perfect. A cozy house, great walking possibilities and lets not forget the very well maintained hot tub. Thanks a lot again!

    Helena&Lasse2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • This place looked amazing from the pictures but they still couldn't do justice to how beautiful and private the property was or the incredible experience of watching the deer graze right in front of us all evening. Tilly was incredibly gracious and we really enjoyed our "off the grid" yet comfortable experience.

    Chad2019-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • This cottage experience is somewhat difficult to accurately describe, because it is so beautiful & unique. The setting is bucolic, serene & one of a kind. The deer running past through the pastures in front & behind the cottage are breathtaking. Watching the stars at night while sitting in the hot tub is a sheer indulgence & unique experience. We loved our stay so much and hope to return again!

    Michelle2019-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic, peaceful weekend for our family. Beautiful views. Wonderful welcome from our host Tilly. Hot tub, sauna and plunge pool an added bonus!

    Abi2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • Staying at the cottage was an absolutely magical experience. We loved the view, the coziness of the space, the hot tub under the stars,... all of it. I would definitely stay here again

    Ian2019-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • Tilly was our host for our short stay at Wild Farm. Communication with Tilly was excellent and she kindly met us at Tomintoul so we could follow her to the house. Upon arrival Tilly was very thorough, going through all the instructions in terms of the facilities and the power to the house which we had no issues with after she left us to it. The hot tub was a feature we particularly enjoyed, especially in the evenings. We wish we could have stayed longer to explore the area further as we had a wonderful relaxed time at the farm and would definitely return.

A charming static caravan in the highest village in the Cairngorms, Tomintoul. Located on a private plot of land on the edge of the small village with a beautiful view over the nearby countryside, it is a peaceful, cosy little escape in the highlands. An ideal base for outdoorsy types who want to explore nearby mountain biking trails, ski slopes, hill walking etc or a perfect scenic holiday spot for families or a small group looking to soak up a spot of rural Scotland.
This mobile home is cosy, peaceful and charming, standing on its own private site on the outskirts of the village with beautiful views of nearby countryside fields. It is retro in furnishings and possesses basic amenities. There are two electric hobs, a fridge, a kettle and a microwave in the kitchen. There is also a freestanding electric oven. You may struggle to whip up a three course gastronomic experience, but the kitchen is well equipped for making simple meals! There is a hot shower, two bathrooms and storage heaters throughout the caravan. Please be mindful of the quiet village atmosphere and the neighbours and prevent causing noise pollution during your stay.
Tomintoul is the highest village in the Cairngorms. It is a scenic little place only three streets long surrounded by peaceful walks, incredible views and easy access to nearby outdoor activities like mountain biking, horse riding and skiing. The village square has a few restaurants and cafes, two friendly pubs (I recommend the Richmond Arms which has a vast selection of whiskey), a local post office and mini-mart and a wonderful Whisky shop well worth a visit. There is a kids play park situated near the bottom of the main street of the village. There is also a country walk down to a nearby scenic river and beloved viewpoints scoped out by Queen Victoria who travelled through the region during her reign. The village is surrounded by history and is an adorable little place to unwind and soak up quiet village life. It is cold in this area, even in the summer, given its highland location - pack for all weathers so as not to get caught out!
  • The static caravan in Tomintoul was perfect! It was on a little site of it's own so nice and easy to find. Janine was so helpful. The caravan itself was spacious and the living room area was large. It was cosy and warm, with lots of hot water for showers. It was only a 10 minute drive to The Lecht 2090 where the beginner slopes were brilliant with the snow machine being in use. We didn't spend much time in Tomintoul (which was only a 2 min walk away) but it was a lovely wee village. We did go to the local shop/post office which had loads of grocery items including beer and wine.

    Heather2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • Janine has a nice and cozy Caravan in Tomintoul, a beautiful small town very well located to explore the Highlands. The place has everything you need and even games, pencils and cards if you travel with kids in winter and need to spend some time inside. I definitely would stay there again!

  • It was short family break. The caravan was spotless clean, communication with the host - Janine was quick and very straight forward. If you add to it fantastic location, great weather you have mix for fantastic family holiday. Thank you

    Mira2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • We loved Janine's place, it was in great location with a quaint little town. it takes 30mins by car to get to the nest big town in Grantown on Spey for groceries and gas. We liked the place it was central for all the locations we wanted to visit like Avemore and its attractions (20mins), Glenvlivet distillery (20min)s and , 1hr 30min to Loch Ness and its suroundings. Janine's place was secluded, very spacious and homely with a big front yard (yes-we did take advantage to make BBQ - Not minding the weather) with a great view to fields and 3 white horses. Thank you so much for letting us stay in your caravan and we highly recommend this.

The Richmond Arms Hotel, is situated on the SE corner of the main village square. Built around 1898 as a fishing lodge, it has always remained a firm favorite of the fishing community. In recent years the hotel has had a troubled history, and has been closed since 2009, but after 6 months hard work to meet current fire and safety regulations we are now fully open. Tomintoul is famous for being the highest village in the Scottish highlands standing at an elevation of over 1100 ft, Lies within the Cairngorm National park, and is on the GlenLivet estate, one of the Crown Estates in the area. The village is flanked on the West and East sides by rivers. The Lecht Ski centre lies 6 miles to the south. The area has lots to offer for all visitors, from Whisky Distillaries, Castles, Dramatic scenery and Walks. Tomintoul makes a perfect base to explore this part of Scotland. Opening this year are Mountain bike trails around the village which have been specially commissioned by the Crown Estate, and can cater for all levels of experience. Hidden to the South West of the village, from the Hamlet of Delnabo is the stunning Ailnack Gorge, a truly amazing natural feature, and a must see for all. At the Richmond Arms we offer rooms on a Bed and Breakfast basis, lunches and evening meals can be purchased across the Bar. Our rooms comes with towels and bedding as well as Tea and Coffee making facilities. Dogs are more than welcome at a small extra charge per-night. • My group and I stayed over at the Richmond Arms Hotel for one night. The location was a great option on our version of the North East 250 route. Great communication with Martin who was able to accommodate our group of four with two rooms next to each other. The rooms were clean and ample space with a bathroom. The hotel stay included breakfast as well as a restaurant for dinner and drinks. Would stay there again if in the area.

Situated in the stunning Cairngorms National Park only two miles from the picturesque village of Tomintoul, Croughly Cottage is set in an idyllic location. The cottage retains its character as the 16th century wing of the farmhouse. It has been carefully restored to have a warm cottage feel, yet still retains a great amount of character from the past.
The cottage is a fabulous space to enjoy a relaxing stay in the Cairngorms National Park. Surrounded by fabulous scenery, walks and cycle trails it is the perfect spot to enjoy a short break in Scotland. The cottage has a spacious living room, with wood burning stove for cooler nights. A well equipped kitchen allows you to enjoy creating your own meals. The two bedrooms on the first floor are comfortable and spacious, allowing you to get a good nights sleep before your next days adventures. For those wishing to explore the outdoors there is a secure bike storage area and drying area for outdoor clothes. During summer there is also a patio and garden area to sit back and relax soaking up the stunning views down the valley.
The property sits in a secluded spot only two miles from the village of Tomintoul. Tomintoul has a good range of services, from local store, gift shops, art gallery, pubs and restaurants. There are also lovely restaurants within a short drive at Ballindalloch and Grantown. The cottage is adjoined to the original farmhouse, where my sons family stay, however the cottage has a private entrance, parking area and garden to ensure you have a peaceful stay. For those that enjoy Mountain Biking, the Glenlivet Mountain Bike trails are just 0.5 miles along the road and secure bike storage is available at the cottage or you can hire bikes at the centre.
  • Fantastic views of the area and some of the warmest hospitality you will find. The cottage is in a remote location but close to many Speyside whisky distilleries and is not difficult to find by car. The rooms were very comfortable. Just remember to bring some £1 and £2 coins as an electricity meter is in use at the property. Would happily return. Thanks Anne and family, for a lovely stay.

  • We had a very enjoyable stay at Tomintoul due to the great accommodation at Croughly Cottage. It is full of character, warm and cosy, and lacks nothing. It is well located for walking in the Glen Livet Estate. For a family stay this cottage is to be highly recommended.

  • An excellent cottage in a very rural and beautiful area. The place is very cosy and equipped with everything you might need. Hope to be back there in the future.

  • Anne's cottage is a dream. Anne was at the check-in on site and showed us everything in the house and explained. In bad weather you should definitely throw the small wood stove - it will be even more comfortable. :) We can only recommend a stay.

  • The Cairngorm area is amazing and the cottage is situated in the area which makes travelling to the many highlights and activities easy. The outlook from the cottage is in a most beautiful valley with lovely walks. Highly recommended

The cottage is over 200 years old and has just undergone renovation. Surrounded by garden with ample parking space, it sits on a hillside overlooking the glen. Although this is a rural location we do have WIFI, Broadband and mobile reception - though the latter is usually found in the garden and not in the house itself. Not entirely out in the wilderness, there is a nearby village, Tomintoul, with pubs, village shop, cafes and restaurants, a lovely gift shop and the famous Whiskey Castle shop.
Your bedroom is a light and airy room with a large skylight above the double bed from where you can lie and watch the stars on clear nights. The night skies here are truly breath-taking (as they should be as we have Dark Sky designation here). The shower room is shared and has all new plumbing. A full Scottish breakfast (also a vegetarian version), or a lighter breakfast, can be ordered (just let us know when you book) for £8 each, and is served in the kitchen diner. The snug, which is available to you to sit and relax in, has an open fire for cooler evenings (although of course the cottage has central heating) and coffee and tea making facilities. The garden is also for you to enjoy. .
The cottage is situated in the Cairngorms National Park which is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The cottage itself is nearly 1000 feet above sea level and looks down over the glen. Scottish wildlife abounds: deer, reindeer, owls, eagles, red squirrels, badgers, hares and many more. The nearby mountains offer glorious opportunities for climbing and hill walking. Add fishing, canoeing, cycling, touring the many distilleries on the Whiskey Trail, exploring old Scottish castles, organised picnics in the wilds -reached by landrover or argocat, and much more. Glorious beaches also are reachable in just over an hour's drive north. Further info on such can be obtained online from the Tomintoul Discovery Centre, and we have plenty of information leaflets for you to browse in the cottage.
  • Ruth was a great host she made me feel very welcome on arrival. The room was warm and cozy. It also had a skylight so I could watch the stars in bed! I was served and enormous Scottish breakfast in the morning and Ruth was very helpful in giving me tips on the things to do and see nearby. Such a beautiful peaceful area surrounded by nature, just what I was looking for! I would highly recommend staying with Ruth. Thanks for a lovely time, hope to see you again soon x

Auchriachan Farm sits just outside the Village of Tomintoul the Highest village in the Highlands, this is a family working farm. After Glamping ourselves we decided this would be an ideal situation to set up our very own Pods & give others the experience that we thoroughly enjoyed. Being in the Glenlivet Estate & also in the Cairngorm National Park there is lots to offer, walking, cycling, bird watching, skiing & not forgetting the National Scottish Drink "WHISKY" lots of Distilleries to Visit.
As you can see from my own Photos, we have stocked Pods with all you require for your memorable stay, each pod also has a BBq Fire Pit.
The Cairngorms is such a Beautiful National Park, be it Sunny, Raining or Snowing ....sometimes all seasons in one day, its STUNNING. The Glenlivet & Tomintoul Area is the best place in the Cairngorms National Park to Discover the "Wonders of the Night Sky" Basically its the best place for "Star Gazing" & this can be done in privacy from your Pod Patio whilst you are sitting relaxing with a dram in hand infront of your cosy Fire Pit - what more could you want! Not Forgetting we are situated on the route of the "North East 250" which again takes you through some breathtaking scenery & places to Visit - Royal Deeside! Have to say the "Clockhouse" Restaurant in the Square does very good food! There are also 3 local pubs which also do barmeals. On a Tuesday Night we get a visit from a "Fish & Chip" Van which sits also in the square of Tom - very tasty! Our Local Food Store & Post Office - good supply of fresh produce, butcher meat, veg, cheese, alcohol etc
  • Everything you could ask for from a wee get-away! Well kept, cosy pods in a stunning spot. Will definitely be back!

    Christopher2020-02-23T00:00:00Z

We can usually arrange transport to local restaurants including the fabulous Croft Inn (at extra charge). • Amazing place, can’t recommend highly enough for anyone looking for a weekend in the Cairngorms. The hut is beautiful and Kevin and Claire are wonderful hosts. Staying here was a real treat.

    Callum2019-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • What a fabulous two night break in this idyllic part of the world. Kevin and Claire were fabulous hosts from start to finish and the shephards hut was just perfect. Can't wait to return again.

    Victoria2019-08-22T00:00:00Z
  • If you like cozy and peaceful, this place is perfect. The hut is just off the Snow Roads scenic route, so it is perfectly positioned for exploring either the route itself or the rest of the National Park. It is surrounded by farmland, so when you are in, you will only hear farm animals, birds, wind (and rain every now and then - it’s Scotland after all). It is incredibly peaceful. The hut itself is very well equipped - it has a comfortable bed, proper little fire place, great shower, fridge with a little freezer, crockery, cutlery, kettle, toaster, utensils, tea, coffee, milk, salt, pepper... exactly the things you might need for a short stay. (The wifi is strong and fast, too, should you need it.) A nearby town of Tomintoul has a small village store and a couple of restaurants, but Grantown on Spey is not too far if you need a supermarket or more restaurants. Kevin and Claire were very helpful at the time of booking and very welcoming upon my arrival. Overall, I would love to come back and stay again and I would highly recommend the hut to anyone who is looking to book.

  • What a great location in a sparkling clean space to spend our time in the Scottish Highlands. Michele provides more than most hosts and is readily available to answer questions. She greets you and shows you the ins and outs of the space helping you to settle in. The thoughtful touches like tea, coffee, milk and shortbread as well as soaps and most of your basic needs make Michele's place stand out. The space is snug but provided enough room to be comfortable. Be prepared for firm beds. We can highly recommend the Tomintoul Circular walk for a nice stroll around the area which we did the morning we left. Thank you Michele.

  • Our visit to Tomintoul was very enjoyable in no small part due to Michele's lovely Benavon Cottage. The accommodations were clean and comfortable and included parking. The location was perfect for day trips to the surrounding attractions in the area (Ballindalloch Castle, Elgin cathedral, Braemar Gathering). We are also very, very pleased that Michele booked us reservations at the Clockhouse restaurant. The food was so delicious that we went to this restaurant for each of the three nights we stayed in Tomintoul.

  • My wife and me spent two nights at her cottage to hike in the national park. The place is a small cottage, where you get a small room. The bathroom is shared with the owner. The biggest reason for the 5* rating is Felicity herself, who is a very caring, helpful and interesting Person. Thanks again for the good times, Best

    Simon2019-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • Phenomenal stay with Felicity! Space was clean and warm, with little touches to help on a cold day! Would recommend in heart beat to anyone who was heading that way

  • A good base to start or continue the whiskey distillery visits. Request for traditional or local food and Felicity would be able to whip up an awesome treat. Pray for clear skies as the area is a Dark Sky region.

Founded by the Duke of Gordon in 1776, Tomintoul is situated on the line of the old military road built following the 1745 Jacobite rebellion. An ideal destination for walking, climbing, fishing and skiing (the Lecht and Cairngorm range are just a short drive), within an hour you can also be on the beautiful Moray Coast with its long sandy beaches. Wildlife safaris and clay pigeon shooting are available on the Glenlivet Estate and, of course, the area is in the heart of the Whisky Trail. For budding equestrian enthusiasts there is a good riding centre at the end of the lane while for the two wheeled variety try the Glenlivet mountain bike trail nearby. Tomintoul itself has a good selection of shops, galleries, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants all within a short walk of the properties including the world-renowned Whisky Castle, which offers a choice of over 500 single malts and the expertise of the owner’s vast knowledge. A great place to return to again and again. Shop and pub 150 yards, restaurant 200 yards. Cairn Daimh can be booked together with Glen Feshie (UK5473) to accommodate up to 10 guests. Free WiFi

  • We had a great new years break here, with plenty to see and do both locally and within a reasonable drive. Christmas tree in dining area was a lovely touch. Layout of the accommodation meant plenty of space for socialising with also private space if needed. (We were 4 adults and 2 children). Location of accommodation is very peaceful, with great views over the hills. On a clear night, the lack of light pollution means unbelievable views of the night sky. 1 bathroom and a separate shower room meant enough facilities for all, heating provided by storage heaters, with electric heaters should you need them. Our first night the storage heaters weren't on, so the extra blankets and hot water bottles provided were a welcome edition. Perfectly comfortable once the storage heaters were up to temperature though. Overall, we had a lovely stay, exactly what we hoped it would be.

  • Lovely location and great base for exploring north Cairngorms. Had an issue with the dishwasher but David sorted very quickly. Was very mild during our stay - if it had been colder we might have needed a bit of help with the storage heaters as not sure we got the correct settings to maximise the heat output (but I'm sure if we'd asked it would have been sorted quickly! ). Would definitely go back!

  • The Mill is in a unique setting, surrounded by a pittoresque landscape. The house is very well equipped and the rooms are comfortable and provide lots of space. We enjoyed every minute of our stay.

  • If you like to experience the highlands in the best way possible ie fully emerged in nature, David’s place is the best, period. The combination of magnificent scenery, an abundance of wild animals, the truly remarkable hospitality of David as well as his pashion and knowledge about flora and fauna in Glenlivet Estate made our stay an experience we will never forget. Highly recommended is the off road safari through the estate in David’s Defender 110.

We love living here because of the peace & quiet, the beautiful views of the ever changing colours of the countryside and the amazing views of the stars at night. The village of Tomintoul is a “Dark skies” location making star gazing easy. The village has good shops, including the famous “Whisky Castle” with largest collection of malt whisky in Scotland, restaurants & cafés, and is only 10 - 15 min walk. • A wonderful stay in a beautiful house over NYE. The house is lovey and cosy, warm and welcoming after exploring the beautiful surrounding countryside. Very well equipped with spacious bedrooms, bathrooms and living areas, all decorated to a high standard. Would love to return one day!

  • The location is great! It a short walk to the village with a couple of places to eat and a short drive to amazing hiking spots and other villages in the area. And it is a part of a dark sky area, perfect for stargazing on a clear night. But the house itself is just amazing. Spacious, super clean, everything was well thought of. The kitchen is fitted with everything you might think of (just note that it features AGA cooker, you might want to search for it, took some time to get used to) and has plenty of dishes for cooking and serving, as well as normal oven and dishwasher. We were there for Christmas, so had to cook as everything was closed. The living area has a working fireplace. We had a local contact so it was very easy to check in and get minor issues solved (one radiator was barely warm, but we were provided with a heater). The house is very warm and the hot water is actually hotter than at home. Would love to come back again in a different season.

  • Stewart’s cottage is located in a beautiful rural spot in the highlands. The views of the hills are amazing and the solitude is a real luxury. Super quiet at night - we all slept extremely well! It’s a bit of a drive from local conveniences but with organisation that’s not a problem. The cottage is well equipped and we had most things that we needed. Plus there is plenty of firewood for a cosy fire every evening.

  • It is impossible to describe in words the happiness that we felt being in this wonderful house, we are just delighted, so clean, so beautiful, so spacious and comfortable and so warm in case of bad weather, there are no one point we can say it was so so, all - the best, we could only dream of such a holiday, it was also a pleasure to be met by a Stewart and his parents.

  • We were a party of 5 visiting in August. Received a very welcoming reception by Stewart and his parents. Including useful suggestions on hiking spots and other activities in the vicinity of the house. Be prepared for a lovely stay (mostly) without internet connection :)

  • This house is in a very remote location (exactly as per the listing). This brings total peace and quiet and tranquility, however you don't have to travel far (in fact walk out the door) , to experience local wildlife, walks, cycle routes or just chill and watch the amazing hills. Just looking out of the window we saw, deer, hedghogs, hares, an array of birds and bats (to name a few). The house is spotless with an array of amenities to cook with and entertain yourself (we had three kids and Stewart had left a bunch of board games which we were grateful for as it was quite rainy for a couple of days). There's a great wood burning stove to keep you warm and cosy (and lots of wood and coal for the fire). We brought bikes and headed up to the Glenlivet Bike trails on a couple of occasions which are nearby and well worth a visit (storage for bikes is great). Stewart was very efficient and communicated clearly and efficiently. We would love to come back to this oasis of tranqulity and re-charge our batteries again when city life (Edinburgh) has tired us out again.

  • Newfield Cottage is a traditional Scottish cottage that's been beautifully renovated. It's warm, comfortable, well-equipped and in pristine condition. The level of attention to detail was really on par with what you seen in some of the best hotels. The best thing was the peace and quiet. The cottage is tucked back quite a ways from the road and the road itself is very quiet. There's no wifi, there's no cell signal and all we could hear was the gentle rain falling and the cows in the surrounding fields chewing away. We were sad to leave and will definitely try to make our next stay here longer.

    Graham2018-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful cottage full of charm and cleanliness and attention to detail irreproachable! Rarely met such establishment at this price! An address to remember without a doubt! At attentive hosts, present and discreet at the same time! What happiness! Thanks to Stewart and his parents!

  • A cottage full of character in a beautiful and quiet location, with plenty of space for our family. The host was very helpful when we checked in. Tomintoul is conveniently located near the Glenlivet Estate. One of the best AirBnBs we have stayed at, highly recommended.

  • We stayed at the cottage for 11 nights in October '19. The cottage is in a lovely setting, with a large well maintained lawn area which was perfect for our 18 month old to potter around in. There is a lovely pond and river just by the cottage and direct access onto the moor via a steep track. The cottage was clean, very warm and cosy with a powerful heating system! The kitchen is compact but had everything we needed including dishwasher and washing machine. Tom kindly provided a travel cot and high chair for us. Communication with Tom and Katie before the trip was excellent; Katie gave us a lovely warm welcome and suggestions of things to do locally on arrival. We enjoyed a great meal at the Clockhouse and found Delnabo to be a good location for trips further afield to Aviemore or Braemar. Thank you for having us!

A warm welcome awaits you at the Milton. Situated alongside the River Avon in the Cairngorm National Park, this wonderful retreat is in one of the Highlands' most beautiful glens. The area provides many opportunities for all ages and interests. It is ideally suited for walkers, whisky tourers, castle-enthusiasts, wildlife lovers and anyone wanting a restful break, the Milton is perfectly positioned as a base, or for those passing through from Skye, the NC500 or the NE250.
The Milton B&B has a wonderful bedroom situated on the first-floor, with flexibility to contain either a super-king sized bed, or two single beds. The B&B is situated in a secluded glen ensuring a peaceful night's sleep for any guest. The room has access to a spacious bathroom exclusively for your use. The large dining room hosts breakfast; a healthy selection of cereals, fresh fruit, yogurts, fruit juice or a hearty cooked breakfast for those with a big appetite first thing. Smoked salmon with scrambled free range eggs are always a favourite. Tea & coffee making facilities are in the room along with Wifi; a z-bed, travel cot and high-chair are also available. A complementary wee dram of local Tomintoul whisky greets you on arrival; distilled less than half a mile away in the glen, you cannot drink it more locally!
Where shall we start?! There is so much to do: Walks: I am a keen walker and can advise on the best walks in the local area and further afield. The Cromdale Hills are accessed by a track opposite the back of the house (including walking to the top of the Jubilee Cairn) and the banks of the River Avon are just one field away and are easily accessible if you prefer something flatter. The Glenlivet Estate has a series of 20 walks, ranging from 2-17 miles long, all of which are within a 15min drive. Finally, for those wanting some real adventure, the heart of the Cairngorms are a short drive away for both tough walking and scrambling/climbing. Several Munros exist for those wanting a challenge. Wildlife: One of the real joys of hte Milton's location is that we are surrounded by some of the country's most impressive wildlife; Roe deer and stags live on both sides of the glen and the UK's only reindeer herd lives on the Cromdale hills behind the house. Depending on the season, expect to see plenty of partridges, pheasants, and rabbits, as well as being a twitcher's paradise (from sand martins to buzzards, we see them all). The RSPB Osprey centre is also roughly half an hour away and occasionally wild ospreys have been known to visit the glen. For those more aquatically inclined, we have seen otters and at the right time of year you can enjoy sitting on the banks of the River Avon at the end of our garden, watching salmon and trout jumping. Red squirrels are also plentiful in some of the nearby woods and there are plenty of Highlands Cows on the Glenlivet Estate for those wanting to see some of our local cattle. Sports: During season, day passes are available for fishing on the local stretch of the River Avon; some excellent trout and salmon fishing conditions exist along a few miles of the river. For those wanting to improve their shot, one of Speyside's biggest clay-pigeon shooting centres is in the glen with a number of ranges for all abilities, including lessons for beginners. The Bike Glenlivet trails also allow mountainbikers the chance to throw themselves down some steep slopes on the other side of the glen, and in the winter the Lecht ski resort is only 12 miles away. Whisky: It would not be Speyside without a mention of the local dram. With the Tomintoul distillery further down the glen, a walk along the River Avon brings your nose within range of the distillery! Sitting on the Glenlivet Estate, we are are only a 10min drive from The Glenlivet Distillery and Visitor Centre, including their excellent cafe serving whisky-flavoured ice-cream. Heading north towards the cost you pass: Ballindalloch, Cragganore Knockando, Tamdhu, Glenfarclas, Cardhu, Aberlour, The Macallan, Glenfiddich, Balvenie... and you are still less than half an hour away. The Malt Whisky trail runs through the glen, so we can serve as the perfect base from which to explore the local distilleries. Night Sky: Being in a Dark Sky area, we are lucky to have some of the lowest levels of light pollution in the UK. On clear nights we have uninterrupted views of some of the best night skies around and many astronomers visit the area to take photographs. Not forgetting of course, when conditions are right, looking down the glen for a glimpse of the Northern Lights! Shops & restaurants: Located just 6 miles away, the village of Tomintoul is hoe to a number of local galleries and shops, full of Highland produce. There are also a number of restaurants and cafes providing food for all tastes. For even more options, we are equidistant from Aberlour and Grantown-on-Spey where some of the HIghlands' best restaurants are situated as well as numerous takeaways and cafes. We have tried all the options so can happily recommend according to your taste. Other: Whether a trip on the furnicular into the heart of the Cairngorms, a trip on the "Whisky Line" and Speyside steam railways, a scenic drive over the Old Military Road to Balmoral Castle, or a day trip to the sandy beaches of Lossiemouth, there is a huge amount to see and do in the area. We can happily recommend days out, whatever the weather!
  • The Milton is in a lovely spot, very quiet with just the sound of the river. There's lots to explore within 30 minutes drive. You're on the Glenlivet Estate, which has a great trail network. The only drawback of the location is the 15 minute drive to Tomintoul to the closest restaurants.

  • Pat's house is lovely, with nice countryside/nature landscapes around. Pat was a great host with lots of attention for us : a glass of whisky in the room for the first night, the perfect Scottish breakfast every morning... The location of the house was perfect for us to visit the Cairngorms National Park. We surely recommend to anyone to stay at Pat's!

  • Pat gives you a warm welcome and hosts you with wonderful hospitality. We loved our stay in her little gem of a cottage surrounded by stunning scenery. There were special touches like the welcoming 16-year-old Tomintoul malt whisky on arrival and drying our wet walking boots at the end of the day. Breakfast was superb and the accommodation so comfortable, with excellent Wifi. We will be back.

  • Pat was an outstanding host - friendly, warm, welcoming. She does cook the best B&B breakfast we have had in Scotland, and that is saying a lot since we have been staying in B&Bs all over the country. The Milton was a delight - cozy, beautiful, and quiet (save for the sheep, of course!). Not too far from a good meal or two in Tomintoul, and the malt whisky trail, in addition to plenty of walking trails. Would most certainly recommend!

  • A very quiet and lonely place outside of Tomintoul. We enjoyed the hospitality of Pat and her very fresh attitude. The B&B is like described and the walking distance to Tomintoul Distillery might be another positive attribute for guests ;-) We can recommend this B&B very much. N.B.: take care of rabbits, pheasants and our "friend" the black-white dog of the farm on the way to Pat's house ;-) Regards, Anke & Dirk

  • The Milton is a wonderful and relaxing place to stay, and Pat is the perfect host!

  • Pat welcomed us in a warm and friendly way. The room and bathroom were very clean and comfy, anything you could ask for was in place. After every quiet and relaxing night Pat prepared us a great breakfast to our wishes. She was interested in our daily plans and gave us very helpful suggestions for tours and sightseeing. We had a really great time and it was a pleasure for us to meet Pat and her lovely dog Milly, and wish her all the best.

Braemar and Balmoral, Aviemore Inverness and the Moray Coast are all within striking distance.

The rooms are tastefully decorated in a traditional style with quality bedding and furniture. Glenlivet is a beautiful and diverse area. It is now part of the Cairngorm National Park and renowned for its landscape , rivers, wildlife, history and distilleries. Tomintoul is the nearest Village( 8miles) with a very good post office well stocked with basic provisions , 3 hotels and a very good restaurant called The Clockhouse. There is a Crown Estate Ranger office and a good Discovery centre with a museum and local history and information. Chapeltown of Glenlivet or 'The Braes' is steeped in history and a wonderful place for Hillwalking and exploring in a safe and healthy environment. https://www.glenlivetestate.co.uk/
  • Couldn’t have been a better spot on our trip to Scotland. The cottage felt remote even though you could get to restaurants within 10 min if needed.

  • Beautiful comfortable home. The perfect location to explore the mountains, relax and unwind in complete privacy. I would go back in a heartbeat, loved it here.

  • Elizabeth's cottage is a beautiful home in a great location. She was great to deal with and gave lots of advice on how to get to the property, and what to see and do in the area. The cottage itself is on two levels with three good-sized bedrooms, with a beautiful garden surrounded by fields (which were filled with lambs when we visited in May). The weather turned cold when we went but the property has a lovely wood burning stove to warm up by (a nice touch was that the fire was pre-built and ready to go). The location is wonderfully remote but local amenities are only a short drive away. Would recommend - thanks Liz!

  • The Smiddy is a wonderfully Cosy place to stay!! The cottage is beautiful, the beds are comfy and the kitchen is very well equipped. There is a wood burner in the lounge and you can purchase logs for a small cost. Lots of local walks and biking trails nearby. We stayed for New Year and were warmly welcomed at the local NYE ceilidh. Didn’t get to meet our host however she gave us a call to make sure we got settled in and gave us some info about local area. Wound definitely recommend the Smiddy!

    Emma2019-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • We visited the Smiddy as a family of five. It is relatively remote (probably not for Scotland), offers plenty of space for everyone and is just what you want. Far from Bustle! The decor leaves nothing to be desired, the communication with Elizabeth was smooth, super friendly and fast. A clear recommendation for anyone wishing to spend a hiking holiday in Scotland.

    Niklas2018-07-12T00:00:00Z
  • We spent two days in this lovely cottage. What a lovely place. The cottage was very clean with all the amenities one can imagine. Highly recommended! Would go back there again:)

  • Ol'Smiddy was perfect! Clean, comfy beds, well-stocked kitchen, remote, but in a central location. Elizabeth put together a bunch of information about what to do in the area. We found that very helpful during our stay. We recommend Ol'Smiddy, and can't wait to rebook for another holiday.

Comfortable cottage nestled in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, with a commanding view of the beautiful local landscape. Surrounded by rivers, woodland, hills and moorland, Bailebeg cottage is ideally located for those who love the outdoors and being active.
Bailebeg cottage is part of the beautiful Delnabo Estate, situated in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. The cottage has a well equipped kitchen for self-catering, a cosy sitting room with Freesat TV and DVD player, and a small dining room. The cottage has two bedrooms and one bathroom. One bedroom has a double bed and the other has twin beds. A new bathroom has recently been installed with a new shower.
The cottage is part of Delnabo Estate, situated in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park and close to Tomintoul, the highest village in the Highlands. Both the river Avon (a tributary of the Spey) and river Ailnack run through the Estate. The Ailnack gorge is Scotland's largest glacial melt water channel and is truly spectacular. The woodland and heather moorland is home to lots of wildlife, including red squirrels, deer, grouse and pheasants. There are also resident highland cattle on the Estate. Tomintoul supports quaint shops, pubs, a post office, a museum, restaurant, Malt whisky shop and art studio. For guests who are interested in outdoor pursuits there is much to offer nearby including well marked walking trails, fishing, mountain biking, horse riding, skiing (at the Cairngorms or Lecht ski centres) and golf. The Estate is also well situated for other attractions such as Balmoral, the Queen's castle, and Loch Ness.
  • This is a great house on an absolutely beautiful property. A perfect location for exploring the Cairngorms!

  • This is a stellar place. We had sheep, bunnies, red deer, and pheasants surrounding us in a gorgeous setting. Close to town but you can escape the noise (not that much, but nice to be in the hills). The place is very well-stocked, and we were welcomed by Katie who was helpful and welcoming. It’s within easy reach of wonderful hiking and distilleries - a great getaway. Highly recommend it!

    Elizabeth2019-06-26T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful cottage and friendly hosts! The cottage was much more spacious than it looked on the photos, sparkling clean and kitchen was well equipped. Located 3 mins drive from Tomintoul, it was the perfect base to explore Cairngorms both on foot and in the car. Thank you!

    Kasia2019-05-21T00:00:00Z
