Places to stay in Hilton Beach
Our home is located on an island just a few kilometers off the Trans Canada Hwy, 40 minutes east of Sault St Marie, ON. We have a bungalow located on 3 and 1/2 acres, very private, rural setting, that's why we call it Eden. There is a small town with amenities near by.
We heat our home with a wood stove in winter and the warmth makes it quite cozy in our living room and kitchen. The floors can get a little chilly at night, so I've knit slippers for our guests to use during their stay with us.
St Joseph Island is quite a special place. Its been described as going back in time 50 years. There are third & forth generation family run farms - the forests are full and rich with life and the deer are regular visitors at our home.
  • Conveniently located off the highway, a lovely place to rest for the night with wonderful and kind hosts on a beautiful property! Will seek it on my way back :)

  • Staying and Nancy and Benn's was one of the best AirBNB experiences I've had. I was simply looking for a comfortable place to rest, sleep and shower on my long drive back to Toronto and it delivered and then some. From the thoughtful touches such as my name on my room door, to the excellent hospitality in providing me a muffin for the road upon my departure, everything was amazing...such a kind and lovely couple! The room itself was perfectly comfortable and they also had seperate bathroom designated for guests. The setting for their house in the quiet Richard's Landing was like staying at a relaxation retreat where you could escape from the world. Also incredible value! Just amazing!

  • This place was fantastic! Comfortable bed to sleep in, very quiet area in the country (with some amenities a few minutes drive away), and the hospitality was amazing, Nancy and her husband are some of the best hosts I've stayed with. Highly recommend this place!

It is very quiet here and the bed has a new mattress. The quilt was hand made by my mother many years ago and there is a duvet for the cooler nights.

  • This place is very beautiful, beautiful house is located in the woods, quiet and peaceful. The host couple is hospitable. The room was clean and tidy, just like home. I believe that summer is more worthwhile to experience this wonderful holiday time again.

She did such a great job with a warm welcome and by leaving time she gave us handmade muffins that was super delicious. I am thankful to Nancy from heart and soul ❤️

  • An amazing home away from home

    Kristina2019-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • Dianne has gone the extra mile to fully equip her studio apartment for guests. As far as I can tell, she has thought of everything. Extra toiletries, books, games, travel information, even cream for the coffee. She was exceedingly helpful & welcoming. On top of all that, she has a little slice of paradise there--a deck overlooking Lake Huron.

    Suzy2019-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful location, cozy apartment and an incredible host. Diane is a gem: eager to make sure your stay is the best it can be.

    Barbara2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Dianne’s place is beautiful and her attention to detail makes it even more so. We regretted that we only had one night to stay and are already planning our return for a few nights. Dianne’s studio cottage is wonderfully situated on the lake. She has made sure it well stocked with coffee, tea, spices and there is a well supplied kitchenette. It clearly is a great place to make as home base while exploring and so easy to cozy up and relax. Thanks Dianne for sharing your oasis! Sandy and George

    Sandy2019-09-12T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful place to stay. Diane’s suggestions were very helpful. Privacy was respected with a friendly concern. If you think the view in the pictures is beautiful, imagine the stars at night.

  • A quiet little get away close to the water. Lovely hosts...all the amenities of home you could want...very clean and quite cozy...close to a little library, restaurant/bar and Hilton beach...enjoyed our stay...tv with vcr to enjoy movies provided by the host but no cable...My wife and I would recommend this to anyone looking for a little get away for a few days...a super little spot away from the hustle and bustle of the city...was nice listening to the waves crash against the shore at night and the wind whispering through the pines

Location! Privacy in nature with all the conveniences just a stone throw away! Our cabin is located in the quaint village of Richards Landing. The cabin is surrounded by mature Maple and Oak trees creating a forested paradise on a large lot. It is a minute walk to the beach/park/pickle ball courts, the laundromat is a minute drive and a three minute walk to the downtown area which boasts: a bank, grocery store, hospital, restaurants, ice cream, marina, clothing and gift shops and liquor store.
Our sweet smelling cedar cabin contains two bedrooms which are both open to the main living area which provides and open concept layout, great for relaxing. The futon couches both fold down into double beds if extra sleeping space is needed. (Just to note: the ceiling in the main living room/bedrooms is low. Anyone over 6' tall may have to duck in doorway/under ceiling fan in bedroom.)
There is a vacant, treed lot on one side of the property and the neighbour’s house on the other side isn’t visible when the trees are in full bloom. There is a treed lot directly across the road but there is a neighbour's home across the street and down a lot. All neighbours take great pride of ownership in their properties and it shows!
  • A wonderful Retreat.

  • My husband and I truly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful lakeside apartment in Echo Bay, Ontario. We enjoyed all the thoughtful amenities and were so delighted with the great views of the lake including gorgeous sunsets. The furnishings are lovely and comfortable. We also were so amazed at our host's attention to detail: top-notch cleanliness and organization, continental breakfast provided, including coffee, tea and bottled water and so much more. Our recent visit was a beautiful wintery weekend, we would love to come back during the summer and fall months too.

    Donna2020-01-20T00:00:00Z

    Chelsea2019-11-26T00:00:00Z
  • We made a last minute (ie. can we stay from tonight) decision to stay here and Colleen & Gene were very accommodating. The best things about Colleen & Gene's place is the view to the lake. The couches and kitchen bench face to the lake so you can see that gorgeous view. We had some spectacular sunsets. Their place is exactly as described and is very cozy and comfortable especially now it is getting a bit cold (for us Australians!). It was too cold but there are kayaks you can use to paddle on the lake, there is also a summer house where you can sit and enjoy the view. We'd love to come back sometime in the summer one day.

    Meg2019-10-26T00:00:00Z
  • An hour away from this location we were diverted back home after a hysterical phone call from my daughter advising her dad's house was on fire- it was a total loss and their 3 dogs didn't survive. Upon reading all the reviews we chose this place as a little get away for my husband and I- a late anniversary celebration. I'm so incredibly sad we didn't make it- I'm sad for my daughters losses- but I'm so incredibly grateful for Colleen's grace an understanding. As a fellow host myself- I know how disappointing it is, however I'm 100% certain I was more disappointed! What a great value on the water ! I will do my best to be patient because I would love to actually get to stay and bring a token of appreciation!

    Nicole & Scott2019-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • Exellent

    John2019-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • We loved this place! My husband and I needed a retreat and this is a little piece of quiet, wilderness heaven - yet near enough to the city if one wants to go there-and definitely close to other outdoor places to explore. Colleen and Gene were most welcoming and gracious. The ammenities are lovely. Great bed, recliners in the LR, easy to use kitchenette area and access to their kayaks. The view is spectacular and we enjoyed the Loons on the water. We'd come back in a heart beat.

Light, spacious, room with double bed in finished basement with private bathroom. Our Victorian-style home is conveniently located on a quiet, country road off of Highway 17, between St. Joseph Island and Sault Ste Marie. While here, you can enjoy relaxing on our sweeping verandahs amidst our peaceful perennial gardens.
Our basement is completely finished. It is a very clean, dry, well-lit, carpeted space. This room is appropriate for single guests, but it can also accommodate two if you don't mind a double bed. Note that we do have other listings in the same home, "The Amish Room" and "The Anne Room", if this room is booked or you need accommodations for additional people. We can provide a foam floor mattress with bedding for an extra child or person upon request.
We are located in a lovely rural area, close to the picturesque St. Joseph Island, where you can find unique shops and restaurants, and an array of tourist attractions.

within walking distance to grocery, wine/ beer and gift shops. The fully equipped cabin comes with WiFi ,bar-be-que and an incredible lake view with stunning sunsets. Our guests are welcome to use the fire pit and small wood fired sauna by the lake. Private lakeside deck and dock. Canoe, kayak and bicycles for our guests to enjoyl. A wood stove keeps this cabin nice and cozy during the winter months, and you can go snowshoeing or cross country skiing right from your door.
the Green cabin is one of three cabins at Maria's Cabins on St Joseph Island. Each cabin has it's own unique space and private parking. Guests if they choose to can also enjoy each others company at the common outside patio.
St Joseph Island is a quaint island off the beaten track yet easy to get to via a most scenic bridge. It's most known for its incredible maple syrup and friendly folks. During the Island's Maple Syrup festival from the end of March into April people can enjoy taste testing this liquid gold and visit local producers some of whom are still boiling the syrup down on wood stoves in a little shack in the bush. Gilbertson's Pancake House is the go to when it comes to eating out with maple syrup on the menu. The island is great to explore on bicycle as most roads are paved and traffic is generally low. Needless to say water sports of any kind are a given. The two villages on the island, Hilton Beach and Richards Landing both feature various attractions such as marinas, community halls, libraries, gift stores, restaurants and bars. Too bad we don't have an actual brewpub yet. Comes fall the island turns into a myriad of colours and visitors from near and far come to take in this annual phenomenon. In the winter the Island is surrounded by a frozen water - the time of year to go ice fishing. Cross country skiers ourselves, we enjoy this time of year and most certainly welcome our guests to ski on our groomed trails free of charge.
  • Beautiful spot. View to die for and wonderfully cosy little cabin with everything you need. Was still snowy when we were there so the wood burning stove was perfect for an evening in, but the area would be equally amazing in the summer time. Would definitely stay again!

  • A stay at Maria’s cabins will provide you with all the necessities. The space is not large, but this encouraged my family of 4 to get outside and enjoy the fresh air! There are many things to see and do on St. Joseph’s Island at any time of year, and our hosts were friendly and accommodating without being in our faces. The fireplace was a big hit during chilly nights!

    Serena2020-03-20T00:00:00Z
  • This is the third time I've stayed with Daniela and I will every time I'm in the area. The cottage is great, the view's great and the sauna's an excellent touch. Regardless of the time of year I love the place.

    Ethan2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • My boyfriend and I stayed here during the winter and it absolutely was the perfect place to get away and relax for a few days. The sauna was the perfect way to end our long day after snowshoeing on beautiful trails. The hosts had so many thoughtful touches that we appreciated and were incredibly kind, had so many suggestions and advice about the area and what to do, and were very quick and helpful when responding to any questions or concerns we had. We will definitely be back here during a warmer month to experience even more!

We had a dreamy 4 days staying here. Daniela and Detlef were very friendly and helpful. We would recommend to anyone. Thank you so much for sharing this space with us!

  • This is a wonderful place to stay, I highly recommend it. Daniela is an excellent and thoughtful host. She provided farm fresh eggs, maple syrup, and locally roasted coffee. Wow! • It was our second stay at Maria's cabins. Daniela and Detlef never cease to amaze us with outstanding hospitality and warmth. We've stayed at multiple Airbnb places so far but we have a soft spot for Maria's cabins and their hosts. Such an amazing place to get away from big cities' crazy pace of life and embrace calmness, tranquility and natural beauty of the Northen Ontario.

    Dennis2019-09-17T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay. Loved the sauna by the lake and sitting on the dock. The firepit was beautiful.

    Angela2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • This was a great base to operate from and return and relax at after a long day, hiking in Algoma or exploring St. Joseph's Island. It was clean and well equipped, including a good BBQ. Daniela was communicative and helpful.

    John2019-08-09T00:00:00Z
  • What a great experience! My only regret is not staying longer. Let’s start with the amenities, because that makes this place so nice. The fire pit by the water, wood provided, bikes, canoe, dock to swim from- plenty to do if you are inclined. Super close to the little town so you can ride a bike there in just a few minutes. A grill on the deck. Daniela couldn’t have been nicer. Great conversation, shared some fresh eggs from her farm and some local coffee and maple syrup. The cabin is a basic cabin with all you need to sleep and cook a meal. The local grocery has a nice selection of quality food. The cabin is clean and comfortable and the screened in porch is a great feature. The other two cabins are close but not too close. Great to say hello to people but also great to have privacy if you wish. While the adventurer in me normally doesn’t stay the same place twice, this is a place I will probably come back to.

    Mike2019-07-19T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed in the Orange Cabin. It was cute and cozy and we especially enjoyed the screened in porch! Daniela had quite a few thoughtful little treats awaiting us as well such as locally roasted coffee, premium maple syrup and farm fresh eggs! We were able to conveniently park our motorcycles right out front in good view and the cabin was fully equipped with pots, pans, dishes etc. We would definitely consider coming back another time!

    Julie2019-07-17T00:00:00Z
  • It was a great value, a lovely stay, and an amazing host. I would suggest this place to anyone who wants to get away and really enjoy some nature (with coffee in the morning still). It was a great place. Just like described. And the host was great.

  • We just got back from St Joseph Island and thoroughly enjoyed our time at Katherine’s cottage. It’s on the most beautiful piece of land, we saw so many cool birds! It is walking distance to Richards Landing, where we had some delicious meals and did some shopping. We hope to visit again for a longer period next time! Thanks Katherine!

  • We are married couples who live in Toronto, and we love to explore new places. We were so pleased with our stay at Jennifer's house on the lake. The location is magnificent. The house is very clean and comfortable. The kitchen is a first-class place for cooking, which is fully equipped. Jennifer is a great host! When we had some questions, she was always available and kind. We would highly recommend this location.

When we decided to buy a cottage, we wanted something that brought us closer to nature, but didn’t want a house on the water. It had to have some rustic elements to it. With its vaulted knotty pine ceilings and walls, and windows looking out at the lake, we instantly fell in love.
This cozy lake front cottage offers 2 levels of living space. The main level features an open concept kitchen, living, dining, a full bathroom and laundry facilities. Enjoy the views from our large wrap around deck facing twin lakes. The lower level features 3 bedrooms, and another full bath. The patio doors lead you to the lower deck, down the path, past the fire pit and to the waters edge. The cottage is outfitted with everything you could need from dishes and linens, movies and games, BBQ, kayaks, and water safety equipment.
St.Joseph Island is a quaint island, located 45km east of Sault St. Marie, and accessible by a non-toll bridge. Made up of 2 communities, Richard's Landing and Hilton beach, the island offers great restaurants, campgrounds, full service marinas and charming shops.
  • This is the most amazing property! If you are looking for a place to get away from it all in comfort, this is the place for you! Quiet, peaceful and serene. We will be back!

    Debbie2019-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • Had an amazing time at this location. The cottage itself along with the whole property blew us away and the hosts had it spotless for our arrival. I have nothing bad to say. Caught some fish too!!

    Jacob2019-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • This is a hidden gem! A beautiful view and so kid-friendly! We will definitely be back :)

    Alyssa2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • Everything about the stay was perfect. The house was pristine with all the amenities I could possibly need. Each morning I woke up in the Bear Room to a sunrise that I could see from my bed. The sunsets were beautiful. I spent hours reading on the dock and took many kayak trips around the lake. The late night fires and star gazing provided the perfect end to each day. We were able to spot satellites and the Space Station. St. Joe Island has many good restaurants and although the house feels remote having local spots nearby allowed us not to have cook all our meals. It was a wonderful opportunity to spend time with my family. A cherished memory. THERE WERE NO BUGS!!! Planning to return again next year.

  • Great place, very clean and beautiful scenery. Highly recommend!

    Blake2019-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage and amenities were much better than what we expected - it is modern, very clean , like an upscale hotel, and was furnished with everything we you would need for your stay. The grounds are also larger than depicted in the pictures and we enjoyed a couple of nights by fire (firewood well stocked) . Highly recommend to anyone looking for a pampered stay on the island!

    Armand2019-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • The view, the location, every little detail was on point! What a great place to enjoy your summer holidays!

    Amy2019-08-09T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful place to stay, especially with kids. The slide off the dock is a big hit. They think of all the details, right down to a coffee grinder. The two porches are super lovely, especially during the heat of the day. They are lovely to communicate with, and the stay is super enjoyable. Highly recommend!

Enjoy your stay surrounded by country charm in our century home, located on the western shore of St. Joseph Island, Ontario. Take in views of lake freighters passing only a stone's throw away. As a traditional Bed & Breakfast, we will have coffee/tea and a hot breakfast ready for you when you wake. Prices are per room, GST/HST is included in the booking price. (Maximum occupancy per room 2 people).
Visit historical Fort St. Joseph, shop in the quaint stores, and eat at one of the wonderful restaurants here on the island.
  • The property is lovely, and immaculately kept with a stunning view. The hosts here are very welcoming friendly and helpful, and the breakfast is great, even having Gluten free options for my fussy stomach! Most definitely recommended.

  • Sandy and Clair are such genuine hosts! They welcomed our family into their gorgeous century home where we immediately felt like friends. Stunning views, exceptional hospitality, delicious meals & engaging conversation made our stay an absolutely delightful experience!

    Lori2019-08-02T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful B&B! The home and hosts were very inviting! Sandy and Clair were wonderful! Beautiful country touches everywhere! The flowers were beautiful and smelled amazing around the house. The breakfast was all homemade and delicious and the hosts were very helpful with any questions we had and they were helpful with suggestions. It was so quiet and relaxing to just sit outside and watch the ships go by. Deer came and grazed in the yard while we were relaxing in the adirondack chairs! The island atmosphere itself was slow paced and relaxing. Everyone is very friendly. It was an amazing experience that the other guests, locals, shop owners and anyone we encountered was very friendly! We ate dinner both nights we were there at La Terrazza Franzisi and the food was amazing. All of the staff were very friendly and remembered us the next day. The chef came out and spoke with us to see how we were enjoying our meal and he showed us the fresh herbs he grows for the delicious dishes he makes. We enjoyed getting an ice cream while we explored the quaint little stores. We also relaxed for a while at one of the beaches (Beech beach) which we learned from one of the shop owners got it’s name from the beech trees. It was a nice quiet clean beach and not over crowded. The first hour we were the only ones there. We drove around the entire island and the atmosphere is just relaxing. It’s nice to be unplugged for awhile and not be looking at our phones for the entire weekend. It was also nice that Sunnyside does have WiFi and we weren’t completely out of touch to be able to check in on everything at home.

This historic stone house maintains its heritage character while offering amenities to make your stay comfortable. Located on a hill overlooking the town, it has water views and is a short walk to public beach, stores and restaurants.
This quaint stone house was built by John Richards, founder of Richards Landing, in 1879. As one of the early historic buildings, it sits on a hill overlooking the town with water views. Within walking distance of amenities including public beach, tennis courts, restaurants, gift shops, and grocery store, it offers comfort and convenience within a heritage setting. The Island Stone House is one of the early homes remaining on the island today. Built of stone by the founder of Richards Landing, the architectural style of the home with a mansard roof is reminiscent of the early colonial settlers. The current owners have spent 9 years saving and renovating this once derelict building. Restoration work has included maintaining the original unique mansard roof while adding a wrap around porch for more living space in the summer. Original trim and baseboard was recovered and placed back into the house in order to keep its original character. While elements of the heritage home have been preserved, modern amenities have been added for the comfort of our guests including a three piece bathroom and full kitchen. The house sits upon a hilltop overlooking the town and water. Hedges and trees provide privacy so that guests can enjoy their time at the property in private but with the convenience of amenities close by including beach, restaurants, groceries and gift shops.
St. Joseph Island is a beautiful historic place. The French fort on the island which is now a National Historic Site was the location from which the first battle of the War of 1812 was launched. The island hosts many festivals throughout the year including its famous Maple Syrup Festival and is renowned for its Celtic Music festivals. A drive around the island takes you along beautiful country lanes lined with maple trees and century farms. Great Lakes Freighters pass very close to the island along Sailors Encampment which fronts onto the North Channel that connects Lake Huron to Lake Superior.

We appreciate the close proximity to all the amenities in Richard's Landing, the fully equipped kitchen, the back porch and backyard fire-pit, the very comfy bed and the excellent upgrades in the bathroom. Thank you, Martha! Hopefully we will be back again soon.

    Seth2018-08-05T00:00:00Z
  • I stayed for three weeks while working in the area, and it was perfect. The cabin has a real homey atmosphere while not lacking in comfort or amenities. There was enough hot water for showers and washing dishes, a comfortable bed on the enclosed porch (I could have stayed in the bedroom, but the view from the porch each morning was lovely), comfortable furniture on the back deck to sit outside as the day wound to a close. As well, the kitchen was well supplied with dishes/pots/utensils/cutlery, and the internet connection was reliable. The hosts were kind in offering their herb garden, and access to their compost area to help with organic trash. My stay couldn't have been better.

    Chiara2017-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • Eileen's place on the lake was lovely. We were able to fall asleep listening to the sounds of the waves lapping up on the shore. We loved the screened in porch with the beds and our two boys were very busy catching crabs after the sun went down. We were easily able to bike into quaint Richard's Landing for food. Everything was clean and if we needed anything Eileen was very prompt in helping us. We highly recommend the stay.

    Elaine2017-07-23T00:00:00Z
  • Eileen's place was very comfortable. The beds in the lovely porch had the most glorious view of the clean sandy beach. There were many things that are supplied by Eileen that families could use, such as kayaks and water toys. Eileen was very prompt in communication and even offered us her bicycle when my tire broke! We are looking forward to going back next week.

    Elaine2017-07-03T00:00:00Z
  • Eileen delayed a planned trip south to welcome us and gave us a full briefing on the property, it's history and general information on the area. We spent an idyllic week enjoying the cottage, beach, canoes and wildlife. The views and sunsets are wonderful. We swam from the sandy beach and found the water very safe, both for boating and swimming. Plenty to do in Sault Ste Marie, both Canadian and US. Going from the Canadian to the US "Soo" was simple although, as UK residents we had to be photoed, fingerprinted and pay 12 USD. We could then go b

Upstairs, you’ll find 3 additional bedrooms, a half bath, and walk-in closet. The kitchen includes a stainless steel electric range, side-by-side refrigerator, microwave, 4-slice toaster, electric kettle, and all the essential tools needed to cook a great meal inside on the range or on BBQ. Enjoy a cup of St. Joseph Island Coffee Roasters organic fair-trade fresh air-roasted coffee on the east-facing back deck while you catch the morning sun. Guests are welcome to use the washer / dryer during their stay (we provide a small amount of detergent and eco-friendly dryer balls). For those who are environmentally conscious and enjoy the fresh smell and crisp clean feel of line-dried laundry, there is a clothes line on the back side of the house for your use. Enjoy high-speed wireless Internet (WiFi) access and Bell satellite TV on the new 65" 4K Smart TV, play one of the many board games, or challenge someone to a game of pool. Borrow a book from shelf in the living room. The large unfinished attached garage has been converted into a recreation space with a pool table, ping pong table, 65” projection TV, and Nintendo Wii. The screen porch runs the full length of the front of the house and is accessible from the living room as well as the main floor bedroom. The porch includes a comfy weather-proof rattan sectional for relaxing and Muskoka chairs for enjoying the sunsets. At night, create a more intimate setting by turning on the patio string lights. The first bedroom at the top of the stairs features a Queen bed with cozy duvet, closet, and sliding door to a small west-facing balcony where you can enjoy sunsets and the freighters quietly passing by. In the smaller east-facing bedroom, awake to the sun streaming in from the Twin bed with cozy duvet. The third upstairs bedroom has south and west-facing views, tongue and groove pine, dormers, and a Queen bed with cozy duvet. The ceiling fans and central air-conditioning keep the Island House cool in the summer months and the propane forced air system keeps the home toasty warm in the winter months. Outside, enjoy 100 feet of sand beach and swim in the clear waters of Lake Huron and the St. Mary’s River. Have a picnic, play a game of washer toss, or simply relax on the park-like lawn. Two kayaks with an assortment of lifejacket sizes are available for your use. When night falls, build a fire in the fire pit and roast marshmallows or make S’mores. The Island House property has plenty of parking including space for an RV, truck and trailer, etc. as well as room to turn around large vehicles. PLEASE NOTE: Great Lakes water levels fluctuate up and down. From Spring to Fall the water can go up and then back down again impacting how much beach is available. This fluctuation goes hand-in-hand with waterfront property on the Great Lakes and is outside our control. Currently, water levels are at an all-time high in the Great Lakes including St. Joseph Island which means much of our beach (and neighbouring beaches) is underwater. The swimming is still great. The bottom is a nice firm sand; the water gradually gets deeper. PLEASE ALSO NOTE: St. Joseph Island is a rural community and home to many different kinds of wildlife. While staying at the Island House, you will be vacationing in nature and may encounter deer, porcupines, bear, Canada geese stopping by on their way to warmer climates, and other animals. Please be mindful of deer when driving on the Island, particularly at night. Please also closely watch pets particularly if letting them outside at night.
St. Joseph Island is located in Ontario, Canada in a shipping channel near the mouth of the St. Mary’s River in the northwestern part of Lake Huron – one the 5 Great Lakes – and is 30kms long and 20kms wide. Large freighters heading towards Sault Ste. Marie, and on to Lake Superior, pass between the west side of St. Joseph Island and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Neebish Island. By road, it is 45km south east of the city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and 250km west of Sudbury. The Island played an important role for First Nations and Europeans in the early fur trade and as a staging point for the first victory for British North America in the War of 1812. Today, the Island is a destination for tourists and cottagers who seek its culture that mixes rural charm with a lively arts scene, and is home to about 2000 permanent residents. Drive across the Bernt Gilberston Bridge along Ontario Highway 548 which circles the Island and connects it to the mainland. From the bridge, enjoy views of Port Finlay and Canadian Shield. The Island House is about a 15 minute drive from Highway 17. In the spring, travelers come to the St. Joseph Island to enjoy the locally-made maple syrup on pancake breakfasts. Boaters return in the summer to the two full-service marinas located on the Island. There is year round fishing on the Island for pike, walleye, trout, bass and salmon. In the fall, the maple trees turn beautiful reds, oranges and yellows. Winter is a hub of snowmobile activity as the Island is located between the Ontario and Michigan trail systems. The Island also boasts miles of private and public groomed cross country ski trails. The Island House is situated on the west side of St. Joseph Island a short 10 minute drive along Highway 548 to the hamlet of Richards Landing and about 20 minutes from Hilton Beach. Richards Landing is St. Joseph Island’s business centre and offers: - Grocery store - Liquor / beer store - Full-service marina and public boat launch - Waterfront dining - Galleries and gift shops - Annual art shows - Small community hospital with 24-hour Emergency Department, medical centre and pharmacy - Bank - Public boat launch nearby The village of Hilton Beach, a popular boating destination, is a 20 minute drive to the northeast side of St. Joseph Island. • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Rebecca's house. It was just right for our family. The sunsets were gorgeous, the games room was a lot of fun, beds were very comfortable, very clean and well outfitted home. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay on the island.

    Carolyn2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • It's a large house with lots of space for a family. They have a beautiful games room to keep everyone happy on a rainy day too!

    Paula2019-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • This place was amazing. The house was gorgeous and offered many different options for hanging out, resting and also getting some work done (we were there for a work retreat). The place is super clean and modern, really tastefully decorated with a gorgeous view. Would definitely stay again.

  • My family and I had a great visit and the location on the island added to the experience. We played lots of games that were provided and loved watching the ships and sunsets.

  • Thank you Rebecca, we will stay here again. Great place!

    Onnaly2019-09-12T00:00:00Z
  • Rebecca's place was awesome!!! It was well worth the 6.5 hour drive. The house was super clean, well equipped and every little detail was perfect - tastefully done!!. The appliances, equipment and supplies were all new- seemed like we were the first ones to use and we didn't want to ruin anything. The bedrooms were perfect and beds were comfortable. Rebecca was quick to respond and her hospitality was wonderful. She provided great suggestions and was attentive right from the start through to check out. My favorite time was spent in the wrap around screened porch as you watched the sunset It was perfect to curl up on the lounger and read or take a nap. My teenagers spent a lot of time playing billiards and just chillin with each other in rec room which was great to see! Although the weather was not the best during week we went which prevented us from doing some of the water activities we wanted - Alternatively, we spent quality time together instead by playing board games which we haven't done in years!!!! :) Overall it was one of the more relaxing vacations we all needed but haven't been able to due to our fast paced never ending schedules. Thank you Rebecca and Ryan for sharing your beautiful cottage and we hope others will have the same experience as we did. Sonia & Family

The Amish Room is a light, spacious upstairs room in our Victorian-style home. The room name and artwork was inspired by the influx of Mennonite families to our area just over a decade ago. We so enjoy watching the horses and buggies pass by. Our home is conveniently located on a quiet country road off of Highway 17, between St. Joseph Island and Sault Ste Marie. Note that we do have other listings, "The Anne Room" and "Comfortable Double Room", if you need accommodations for additional people.
Note that on the rare occasion that our other room is booked, you will share the bathroom with other guests. For an extra $10, we can provide a foam floor mattress with bedding for an extra child or person upon request.

  • Staying at Carolyn and Donald’s home is like staying in our own home and maybe a little better since somebody is making breakfast for you every day. We stayed for three days, did hiking in the Lake Superior provincial park, explored the city of Sault Ste Marie and the surrounding area. The home was beautiful, very clean and the hosts always helpful with advice. It’s a perfect location, close to St Joseph island, Sault Ste Marie, parks and the Mennonite community. Felt like visit with relatives.

Overall an excellent place to stay and we also managed to cook a meal on Sat night ..

  • Carolyn and Donald's beautiful home and their hospitality is worth the extra few minutes drive from the Soo. We truly felt as if we've known them for years and would not hesitate on staying with them again, should we be in this area!

The Anne Room - This light, spacious upstairs room, is one of three double rooms in our Victorian-style home. The room name and decor was inspired by the beloved Canadian character, Anne of Green Gables. Our country home is conveniently located on a quiet road off of Highway 17, between St. Joseph Island and Sault Ste Marie. While you are here, you will have plenty of space to enjoy relaxing on one of our two sweeping verandahs, or our cozy little side deck under the grape vines.
Note that on the rare occasion that our other room is booked, the bathroom will be shared with other guests. For an extra $10, we can provide a foam floor mattress with bedding for an extra child or person upon request. We do have another listing if you need accommodations for additional people.
  • Carolyn and Donald have a charming home that is very comfortable. They were so welcoming and offered tea and desserts each evening while chatting with us. They provided breakfast which is not usually offered at most airbnb stays. One morning we had to leave very early for the Agawa Canyon train trip so she packed a breakfast for us to take along. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with them.

    Karen2019-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful house, the best landlord. highly recommended! First: The landlord I have seen the best, the most enthusiastic! Home made Muffin, very delicious! I also helped us make coffee in the morning, feeling like my own home; Second: the house is in a good location, next to the high-speed, very looking for; the whole house is beautiful, it is a garden hut; Third, the room is also very characteristic, warm as spring; we added a mattress, there is no charge; I will definitely stay here next time!

    Ally2019-10-03T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed two nights at this lovely, quiet home in a beautiful countryside setting. Carolyn and Donald are genuine, friendly and helpful; they make you feel like welcome family. We enjoyed Carolyn’s homemade breakfasts (steel cut oats with many toppings and toast and tea /coffee). We enjoyed talking with them both during our stay. They are so kind and really made all our time there so comfortable. I booked their place because of the great reviews! All the rave reviews are well deserved! Loved the whole experience and would highly recommend their place!

    Raman2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • This was a really special bnb: peaceful and pretty...with lovely hosts. We will aim to return.

    Linda2019-09-13T00:00:00Z
  • I have stayed in many lovely b&bs over the years, but this was my hands-down favourite. The house itself is thoroughly beautiful, and Carolyn and Donald were great company and went far beyond the extra mile to make everyone's stay outstanding. They pampered us in all kinds of ways: homemade wild-blueberry pie!, all manner of snacks, fresh flowers from the garden in the bedroom. Plus the bed was extremely comfortable, the shower is strong, there's space in the bedroom to spread out, the massive wraparound porch has several areas for hanging out on comfy chairs or the porch swing. Aesthetically the whole place is beautiful and comfortable, nothing fussy. Hope to go back again and again. Big thanks to Carolyn and Donald!

    Anna2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • We had an amazing time at Carolyn & Donald's beautiful home and would love to visit again in the future. They were super accommodating and kind hosts and we had everything we could’ve possibly needed. Thank you for everything!

    Anna2019-08-07T00:00:00Z
  • We had the BEST stay at Carolyn and Donald's place. Don teasingly called Carolyn a "super duper" host. After our stay there I must say that term applies to both of them. Our room (The Anne Room) was very nice. Carolyn took such good care of us and thought of everything. She offered a carafe of cold water for our room, had all the towels and wash cloths we needed. There were even freshly baked cookies when we arrived. They made breakfast each day and found ways to accommodate my wife's special dietary needs. Donald and Carolyn were a pleasure to talk to as well. We enjoyed getting to know them and they made us feel like family. If you come to this area for any reason you will be delighted to stay at the Firefly Inn.

Lovely, modern log cabin, very sunny and with great views. Sits on over 2 private acres of forest with direct frontage on Twin Lake (an inland lake with a natural shoreline) on beautiful St. Joseph Island. This wonderful lakeside cottage has a spacious modern kitchen, two decks, natural stone fireplace, washer/dryer, dishwasher, and a game room with an electronic dart board. Also includes 2 kayaks and a canoe, a fire ring, and parking for 3 cars. 45 minutes from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
Our log house is modern & large enough to be comfortable, and rustic enough to have country charm.
The neighborhood is quaint, beautiful, and rural. St. Joseph Island is located in Northern Ontario's beautiful Algoma Region. It is the second largest island in Lake Huron and has miles of scenic drives to travel by car or bike. While on the island you will want to visit the St. Joseph Island Museum, Adcocks' Woodland Garden, and the Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site. Travelers to the island also enjoy golfing, fishing, hiking and water sports. There are several festivals and live music concerts throughout the year. And just 45 minutes away, the city of Sault Ste. Marie is home to the Agawa Canyon Tour Train with world famous one-day train tours to Agawa Canyon and the Canadian wilderness.
  • Amazing cottage, great view, well stocked and kept very clean and tidy.

    Kim2019-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • This place is great. Clean, well decorated, comfortable beds and all the equipment you need for an enjoyable stay. Very private with great views of the lake.

The cabin comes with a wood stove and electric heat. It has an entrance porch, a fully equipped kitchen, private parking and separate hangout area with fire pit. Just cross the road and you are on the water front. Walk or bike to the village.
Cabin with lake view sits on its own and has private parking and fire pit. On cooler spring or fall days light a fire in the wood stove and enjoy the peaceful quiet, and maybe the distant call of a loon.
If you like things fairly quiet and relaxed the "Island" is the place to be. The quaint village of Richards Landing offers pretty well anything one needs ranging from groceries, wine and beer, gift and artisan stores, a few restaurants, bars, and even a small town hospital. In the spring it's Maple Syrup Festival when the woods come alive with fragrant steam billowing out from the various maple syrup operations. Gilbertson's Pancake house is a favorite. In the fall this area comes ablaze with leaves turning colour. local artisans open their shops during the annual Fall Colour Collage tour. With snow blanketing the Island things really get quiet and since we are passionate cross country skiers we love this time of year. You can snowshoe right from the cabins or access the ski trails from our farm up the hill.
  • We had a great time staying at Daniela's cottage for a couple weeks. The space and the surrounding areas were beautiful and Daniela was very welcoming. I would certainly return.

  • Excellent as usual !!

    Mike2019-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • The place will exceed your expectations . From the eggs, maple syrup, and coffee, to the excellent hospitality. To The bikes , clean cabin, abundant towels and private dock , you will be pleased. Very well suited for a quite couples get away.

    Jonathan2019-07-06T00:00:00Z
  • awesome !! everything is perfect, the place, Daniela and the neighbors. only one regret: staying only 2 nights! a haven of peace !!

    Jocelyne2018-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed for 2 nights in the Blue Cabin. It is a 2 bedroom Cabin with a small kitchenette, living room and bathroom with shower. There is a enclosed porch as well but does not offer a view of anything. There is a wood stove should you want to use it. The internet was good but if you are a tv watcher there are only a couple of channels so choice is limited. The Cabin was clean, comfortable and equipped with all you need for a nice stay; bath & kitchen towels, oven mitts, dish soap, extra blankets and pillows, so nice to have upon arrival! Bring your hair dryer and a full sized bar of soap, that is the only "extras" that I required during our stay. There was even some yummy maple syrup and a small container of ground coffee to welcome us.

    Bev2017-09-09T00:00:00Z
  • We were very impressed with the location and the cottage. It was spotless and well equipped. It was very close to the beach for our four year old and to the town of Richard's Landing. We couldn't walk it with her but it wouldn't be too far to walk for adults or older children. Not far from the larger city of Sault Ste. Marie and the town of Bruce Mines. We went to both places on the rainy days. Our hosts were wonderful - such great warm and welcoming people.

    anne2017-07-08T00:00:00Z
  • Staying with Daniela was a very nice ending to my month-long road trip across Canada. It was very relaxing and St. Joseph Island is beautiful, the cherry on top was the sauna! I warmly recommend.

The view is spectacular and the sound of the wind rustling through the trees at night was very peaceful. If you're looking for a complete change of pace with time to relax and settle in with a good book this is the perfect spot!
