Places to stay in Helperby

Places to stay in Helperby
A completely self contained and private space in which to unwind. Quality vintage bed linen, towels and gowns are provided, as are basic ingredients for home cooking, garlic, herbs etc. Organic produce from the vegetable garden are available when there is a glut.
This is a unique opportunity to stay in our vintage showman's van set in mature gardens. It is a self contained open plan space consisting of a large double bed, a dining and sitting area, and a fully equipped kitchen with gas oven. The loo with hand wash basin and towel are in a separate hut beside the caravan. There is an outside cast iron bath in a secluded area nearby, heated with a wood burner. A supply of firewood is provided. There is a wood burning stove in the caravan, and we will ensure a good supply of dry firewood for your use. However, those wishing to use the bath more than once will have to gather their own firewood. You can of course bring your own wood supply if you prefer. Linen sheets, towels and bathrobes are provided. Fresh breakfast food is supplied. Requests for special dietary needs can be met if forewarned. There is ample parking space next to the caravan. There is a radio and ( rather patchy) internet connection but no television. Visitors are welcome to bring their dog, but only I dog at a time as the space is limited.
The village lies midway between the Yorkshire Dales and the Hambleton Hills and Moors, ("the Golden Triangle.") Leeds, Harrogate, Ripon and Thirsk are all within easy reach. There are two pubs in the village, both serve meals during the daytime and evening. The New Inn in the next village, Tholthorpe, also serves evening meals, and has a newly installed wood fired pizza oven. There is a small shop/deli in the village which has a wide range of interesting fresh food. Borobridge and Easingwold are only 5 miles distant, where all you could need is available. This is a walker's paradise with many historic buildings, abbeys and castles to visit within a radius of 20 miles. (Castle Howard, Fountains Abbey, Newby Hall, Benningborough Hall, to name but a few) Fishing in the River Swale is popular, and day tickets can be obtained in the village. There are several good golf courses in the vicinity. As the immediate area is relatively flat being in the river valley, it is great for cycling,
  • Lovely hosts, beautiful location, much hugger than expected. A proper home from home with the added novelty of an outside bath.... Which is an absolute must. Would recommend to friends and family

    Liz2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • We would highly recommend this Airbnb. We had an amazing couple of nights. The caravan is very special and the outdoor bath was lovely even mid February! There were so many lovely touches! Thankyou so much for hosting us

    Carrie2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • What a place!! The caravan was so cosy even through the storm. The bath was quite the experience, but one that has to be tried. The two dogs were our new best friends and Maggie was very welcoming! So nice to get away from it all, highly recommended

    Amy2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Brilliant place to stay nice and cosy

    Daniel2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely and peaceful stay, thank you!

    Greg2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • The showman caravan is a fantastically unique place to stay. The log burning in the caravan made it super cozy and the outdoor was an amazing experience. Cannot recommend enough!

    Holly2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • If you want a quiet break away from it all, somewhere with real character and gracious hosts, we cannot recommend Maggie's place highly enough. Maggie, Humph and the dogs are lovely, attentive to your needs, while also giving you your privacy. The caravan is cosy but spacious enough for two to relax without getting under each other's feet, and while there is an electric heater, the wood burner gives it so much more character and ensures you'll be super snug even in the October rain. We'd also recommend making use of the outdoor shower and bath, even if the weather seems inclement. There was something truly magical about sitting back in a steaming hot candle lit bath in beautiful surroundings with cool rain pattering down through the tree canopy above.

    Eddy2019-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • What an incredible space. Perfect getaway for some peace and quiet, and to enjoy the quirky features that are on offer. Maggie was great and very accommodating. We loved the 'back to basics' charm of the place and wouldn't hesitate to go back again.

This property is a beautifully renovated former salt house, situated in an idyllic rural landscape. The house has a wood burning stove for cosy nights and a self enclosed garden should you wish to bring a well-behaved pet. Come and explore Yorkshire!
The Salt House has had various uses - it was originally used for salting and storing bacon. In more recent years it has been a coal shed and then a children's play house before conversion to living space
We are ideally located for driving to York, Ripon and Harrogate. Whitby and the North Yorkshire coastline is about an hour and a half drive away with several stately homes closer to hand. There are local walks to explore and some excellent village pubs within a four mile radius.
  • Our second stay here and loved it just as much as the first, would definately reccomend

    Jamie2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely welcome and a comfortable cottage with all the necessary amenities. Beautifully clean and quiet in the rural surroundings. Judith and Simon made us feel very welcome and were most helpful. The freshly baked bread was a thoughtful touch too. Would thoroughly recommend this accommodation.

  • Judith and Simon’s Salt House was a great hideaway for a Christmas retreat! It was exceptionally comfortable, quiet and spacious. The morning views were a wonderful way to start our lazy days :). • Excellent cottage. Warm, clean and very comfortable. The bread, eggs, jam, butter and milk was a lovely extra and very enjoyable. The views from the cottage were beautiful on the lovely frost mornings we had during our stay. We were glad to have the log burner to keep us warm while relaxing watching TV. Thank you we will definitely be back!

  • A beautiful little hideaway with a lovely log burner to make it even cosier. Beautifully clean with everything you need plus little extras on arrival like fresh homemade bread and fresh eggs milk and jam which was very handy as the salt house is quite rural. My wife and I and our dog had wonderful walks and a peaceful stay

    Dennis2019-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • The Salt House is a beautifully tranquil place to spend a weekend, and we feel fully refreshed after our stay. The homemade bread, jam and eggs were a lovely touch, and the fire was just perfect :D We cannot recommend staying here enough, a little slice of heaven. Thank you again! x

Cotters House is a quaint cottage located in the Magna Carta village of Topcliffe. The space is cosy but large enough to comfortably fit four, with many amenities provided. The cottage has been refurbished to meet the needs of modern day life, with WiFi and Freeview TV, but still features traditional aspects such as exposed beams and wood floors. It benefits from central heating, instant hot water and now has a new HETAS approved wood burning stove, perfect for relaxing nights in by the fire!
Set back from the road, the cottage has a private entrance and parking space. There is a garden and patio area to the rear of the property, with a large weather proof lockable store that is ideal for safe, dry storage of bicycles/sports equipment. We provide guests with fire lighters, matches and the all important, high quality, kiln-dried logs to enjoy those cosy nights in. We also provide you with some breakfast essentials - bread, milk, orange juice, butter, jam, six eggs, cornflakes, bananas and apples.
The village is lucky to have two great pubs - The Angel and The Swan, both providing good pub grub. There is also the Crab and Lobster for finer dining, about a 10 minute walk towards Asenby, from the cottage. We are in the prime position for access to towns and cities of North Yorkshire, as well as the stunning East Coast and are close to many great cycling routes, as used in Le Grand Depart of Le Tour de France in 2014, Le Tour de Yorkshire and the UCI World Road Cycling Championships of 2019. Though we hope we will have provided amenities required, there is a Post Office shop across the road in case you require anything else. Topcliffe itself has a lot to be explored (such as a motte-and-bailey castle) and so do the surrounding areas!
  • One night stay. Was in a great location friendly hosts. Place as described lovely character house. Would come again.

Brilliant wood burner too , just what you really need after you've been for a walk to the motte and bailey. Definitely recommend a stay at Jaz and Tony's cotters cottage!

  • A lovely cottage in a beautiful quiet village location. The cottage was very comfortable and clean - with lovely comfortable beds. Very warm and snug with plenty of hot water. Lots to do in the area. York centre very easy to get to.

  • We stayed here with our 7 month baby as a 2 night stop over on the way to Glasgow from London. The cottage was super clean and a lovely place to rest up on our journey. The surrounding area was absolutely gorgeous. Wish we’d been there in time on Saturday to buy a few cakes from the local bakery van! The cottage was very warm with plenty of logs/ kindling for the log burner, which made the living room extra cosy. The kitchen had everything we needed. We arrived at 17:30 on a Saturday without doing a shop before hand. Fortunately the village shop 1.5 miles away in Tollerton was open until 6pm for a few essentials. However if planning to arrive in the evening, I’d recommend bringing milk, bread etc as the nearest supermarket is 8 miles away.

  • We had such a great stay at Stephen and Rachel’s cottage. It has everything you would need for a comfortable stay, very clean and is in a lovely village location about 20mins from York. We had two small children with us and it’s a very child friendly cottage with stair gates and a lovely room on the third floor complete with soft toys and books. I would definitely recommend anyone to hire this cottage.

  • Perfect relaxing weekend, exactly what we wanted. Although it was a quiet village, it was only a 20 mins drive in to York and 35 mins to Harrogate. Pictures don’t do justice, bigger than we expected. The cottage has everything you need, home from home. WiFi worked fine, we took a chrome cast for Netflix. The host was very welcoming, easy check in/out. Have already recommended to family and friends.

Hello, if you love the picturesque rural British countryside, enjoy country walks and also appreciate the rich culture and convenience of cities, then this could be the perfect holiday stay for you.
    1. Newly renovated to a high standard, this little cottage started its life as a lambing shed some 150 years ago and to this day, it is still surrounded by hundreds of acres of pleasant greeneries (you would most certainly see more wildlife than people!) 2. The cottage is detached and comes with its own dedicated garden, private entrance and private parking. Also, it is fields away from the nearest house – truly open and refreshing countryside 3. All beddings (Egyptian cotton, 500 TC) and towels are professionally cleaned by specialist laundry services 4. Being on top of a hill and situated between two charming medieval villages, you will be able to enjoy many scenic views, as far as 20 miles on a clear day 5. Given its uniqueness and high property costs of this attractive and much sought-after village area, we are trying our best to keep the cottage’s price as low as possible without compromising on quality! 6. This is the holiday-stay location that provides the best of both worlds - not only that it gives that peaceful and unspoilt rural feel, it is also close to numerous tourist attractions, cities and shops: a. York – 29 minutes, 15 miles b. Harrogate – 26 minutes, 14 miles c. Knaresborough – 17 minutes, 7 miles d. Ripon – 20 minutes, 11 miles e. Leeds – 40 minutes, 31 miles f. Village pub/post office/shop – within 0.5 mile g. Nearest supermarket – 8 minutes, 3 miles Please Note: 1. The road and footpath to the cottage can be muddy (especially when it’s raining) 2. Well, being so secluded and rural means that the country lane leading to the cottage's private car park is only used by a few people, and therefore Highways authority does not maintain it as well as more populated areas. As a result, the lane to the cottage can be bumpy for some vehicles and you may prefer to park your vehicle in the village and walk 5-10 minutes to reach the cottage. (it’s about 1 minute uphill walk from the onsite car park to the cottage) 3. It is recommended to check in before sunset (for better visibility and navigation through the narrow country lane) 4. Please inform me of your arrival time in advance, since the cottage can be tricky to find 5. Strictly no smokers/no heavy drinkers/no parties please
Numerous popular tourist attractions and hidden gems are within 30 minutes’ drive
  • A really lovely cottage. Would definitely recommend to anyone. Thanks Jon!

    Ollie2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed a lovely 4 night stay, Jon’s hospitality was outstanding - he met us on the first night to help us find our way in the dark and made sure that we were well settled before leaving us to our peaceful break. The cottage was warm, comfortable and absolutely spotless and the location is beautiful! Would definitely recommend!

    Ben2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • What an amazing place with privacy, peace and quiet in an idyllic setting. Jon went out of his way to make us feel comfortable and to enjoy our stay. The location and village is just amazing. Stunning house with a fabulous bed and bathroom. We will definitely be going back!

  • Be prepared to never want to leave! Breathtaking location, completely secluded and a true hidden gem. Easy to get to, had absolutely everything you could need and more! I can’t wait to book this place again because this is the place you want to go when you just need a break. Stylish, modern and rustic all rolled into one. Also jon, couldn’t be a better host, truly cared about the needs of his guests and such a delight to meet. Thankyou so much for having us Molly& Max

  • Amazing property and great host! The lane to get to the parking area is a little bumpy but once parked, the walk is easy. Stunning building with great views! Loved having 3 friendly horses as neighbours! Will definitely return when the weather improves as there is a large front garden to take full advantage of for picnics!! Thanks Jon!

    Abi2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Visited between Christmas and New Year for a quiet few days. Location was fantastic. Property was superb. Very clean and modern. A place to really relax. Lots of thoughtful touches and Jon was an excellent host. Really easy to get hold of if you needed him. Pub in the village was amazing. Food and service both excellent. Supermarket also a 5 min drive away if needed. Would recommend taking Wellies if it has been raining as there is a short walk from the car. Would recommend this property to everyone!

    Amber2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • Definitely a 5* stay! The description on Airbnb is accurate: location is rural and not overlooked (except by three nosy (but very friendly) horses), is within walking distance from a lovely, country pub (bring your wellies!) and is a in a great spot for getting to nearby cities. The actual venue is spotless and has everything you need! The only other thing i would say is PLEASE be prepared for a muddy, bumpy journey on the short side road leading up to the cottage as Jon has explained in the listing. Would recommend to anyone!

Milby is a quiet hamlet about half a mile from Boroughbridge. The cottage adjoins the main house but is completely self-contained. There is a private yard and parking area. We allow one well behaved dog which we ask to be accompanied at all times. The cottage is close to Boroughbridge which has pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops. Ripon, Knaresborough, Harrogate, York, The Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors are all within easy reach.
The cottage is in a very quiet location close to the river Ure. Many guests bring their dog and have commented on the nice walk along the river and canal. Boroughbridge is a 15 minute walk away along the riverbank. Please don't walk on the main road as traffic travels very fast and it's not very safe.
  • Property was clean, comfortable and cosy. Would highly recommend.

  • This is a wonderful area - plus the property has great character, style and is very cosy. Well recommended. Hosts were outstanding.

  • Beautiful little cottage. Lovely and clean, great communication from Gillian. All in all a lovely stay.

    Lauren2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Couldnt of wished for better. Deceptively spacious. Sparkling clean. We were left to our own devices with a respect for our privacy but help was there if we needed it. 10/10

  • Book with confidence! The photos really don’t do this charming cottage justice- beautiful views, lovely bright clean space with all three wonderful quirky beams and features. The upstairs bedroom is a beautiful serene space with views out over the fields , lovely quality linen, a gorgeous (and practical) mirrored dressing table, hanging space and extra blankets and pillows should you need them (though it must be said despite the frigid temperatures outside the cottage was toasty warm). We had a wonderful stay thanks so much! X

Old Spring House is part of a Victorian farmhouse, adjacent to a working farm, set in a tranquil location between the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales, only ten minutes drive from the A1 and half an hour from historic York and stately Harrogate. The nearest towns are Boroughbridge and Ripon where there is history, entertainment and a number of fine restaurants and pubs.
We have lived in the area for nearly thirty years and are happy to share our knowledge and interests. The situation offers space to unwind and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Pilmoor is a beautiful place from which to explore the countryside of North Yorkshire but is equally convenient for travelling to Leeds, York and Harrogate as well as the coastal towns of Scarborough, Whitby and Filey. Fountains Abbey, Castle Howard, the Herriot Museum, the White Horse at Kilburn and Ryedale Folk Museum are a few of the many attractions easily accessible from our doorstep. For those who prefer the outdoors, the National Cycle Route 657 passes the door and there are numerous walks taking in the wildlife and landscapes of North Yorkshire. Pilmoor is only ten minutes drive from the A1 or A19, an ideal place to stop over if travelling either North or South.
  • This was truly a home from home stay with fantastic hosts. Janet and Andy were very welcoming and couldn't do enough for us, we felt like we'd known them for years, and we only stayed one night. Janet went above and beyond providing a lovely breakfast and catered for our needs as vegans, the breakfast was fantastic. She even went that extra mile to uncover a restaurant that could cater for us as well. They have a lovely house in a wonderful countryside setting with beautiful gardens to enjoy. We will definitely be back to explore the surrounding area. Thank you Janet and Andy for your kindness, and for a wonderful stay. We look forward to seeing you soon.

  • The location was ideal and very quiet. The rural farm house and garden were beautiful and just as described. The bedroom and private bathroom were both very comfortable and extremely clean, both the the white bedlinen and towels were of excellent quality. Our chosen breakfast was better than anticipated each morning. Jane and Andy were perfect hosts they made us so welcome into their home. We would have no hesitation in asking to return there. This was our first experience of Airbnb and in all aspects was so very successful.

I live in the pretty village of Great Ouseburn, 10 minutes from the market town of Boroughbridge. A 30 minute drive from both Harrogate and York. The Annexe is excellent value for money and offers comfortable, cosy and well equipped accommodation, with everything you need for a relaxing stay for a couple of days or a longer. Although it is linked to my home, It is self contained with its own entrance, giving guests their freedom and privacy.
The Annexe has its own entrance at the front of the property, so guests can come and go as they please. The accommodation is all on one level, no stairs and has central heating throughout. The bedroom has a comfortable double bed with hypo allergenic bedding. The ensuite has a walk in shower (no bath). A range of Caroline Henry individual toiletries are provided. The sitting room has a television with Freeview and a dvd player with a good selection of films. There is a good range of books, games and jigsaws and a CD player with a varied selection of CDs. The kitchen is very well equipped with a full range of appliances. Everything you would need for a couple of days or self catering for a longer stay. There is also the usual kettle, toaster and microwave and a Dolce Gusto coffee machine for coffee lovers with a selection of pods. Tea, coffee, sugar, milk and a full range of breakfast goodies are provided for guests with some little added extras for those staying longer than a couple of nights. There isn't a washing machine in the Annexe but the washing machine in my kitchen is available on request. Parking is available at the front of the property, through the gate, on the gravelled area and there is plenty of space for bicycles. The annexe is part of my family home and sometimes used for extended family and friends, please respect the furniture and contents as you would your own. The Annexe is suitable for all ages. For a relaxing break and enjoying everything that the beautiful county of North Yorkshire has to offer.
Great Ouseburn is a small village in the Vale of York. It has a well stocked village shop and Post Office. We currently do not have an open pub in the village but there is an excellent variety of pubs, restaurants and takeaways to suit all tastes, within a 10 minute drive. Details of these and attractions to visit in the area are in the info pack in the Annexe kitchen. The bar, run by the cricket club at the village hall is open from mid April to mid September during the cricket season on Saturdays 4pm-9pm, all are welcome. For guests looking for ultimate relaxation, the spa at Aldwark Manor golf and leisure, is less than a 10 minute drive. The spa offers a wide range of treatments. Advance booking is recommended. Great Ouseburn is only half an hours drive from both York and the spa town of Harrogate. Only an hours drive away are the Yorkshire Dales, Grassington, Burnsall and Skipton, popular with walkers and tourists alike and an hour and a halfs drive to the coast, Scarborough and Whitby, popular coastal towns to visit. Yorkshire offers plenty of days out for visitors, be it walking, visiting the many interesting towns and cities, museums, stately homes and gardens...there is something for everyone.
  • We have stayed a number of times with Tricia and it never fails to delight. Already booked our next stay at Easter. The location is so convenient for York and NT houses, gardens etc. The accommodation is great and the welcome pack is so generous. Difficult to add to previous reviews but cannot recommend it highly enough. Tricia is a charming host and the welcome is always warm.

  • Yet another faultless stay at The Annexe! We love coming here and it is so convenient for both York and Harrogate. Tricia is so incredibly thoughtful, adding so many personal touches to make you feel at home. She gives great pub recommendations and responds quickly. It really is the perfect home away from home with everything you could possibly need. Thank you Tricia. We can’t wait to be back again soon for visit number 4!

  • Wonderful place, wonderful host. Tricia was great to communicate with, always checked we had everything we needed, lovely to chat with. We loved the space, bigger than we'd expected, in a beautiful village in a beautiful area. I loved watching the birds (and the hedgehog!) in the garden and wandering the quiet lanes. Can't recommend highly enough and we certainly hope to be back one day. Thanks!

  • Great location in North Yorkshire. The overall quality of the accommodation is excellent and the extra special touches e.g. prosecco, range of breakfast items and the friendliness of the host makes it even more special. There is a great attention to detail regarding suggested places to visit and eat in the locality.

    Derek2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay, thank you so much. The place is as described. Very clean and comfortable. Tricia was very welcoming. The fridge was kindly stocked with lots of welcome breakfast/sandwich fillers. Good location to access Yorkshire dales, North Yorkshire moors and York. Thanks.

  • Dove Cottage is a nice little place hidden and cosy in the very hart of Boroughbridge. It has to wonderful sleeping rooms for all occasions not just like sleeping but like day dreams, reading, doing your work at the laptop... The two sofas in the drawing room are comfortable and you find the perfect dishes to make a nice dinner. we came with a big Van (from Germany) and found enough space to put it in front of the entrance for an easy transport of luggage. Kelly is a very kind person and always asks for your comfort of the stay. We thank you very much and excuse our poor English!

  • Dove Cottage was a snug place to be on a very wet weekend in July. All new furnishings and very comfy beds. Easy to get to off A1, but quiet and quick to get to the Moors from. Even in the rain, Boroughbridge is charming and the cottage is in a quiet spot just off the High Street, with various shops, cafes and places to eat nearby.

In addition the barn has easy access to the spa town of Harrogate, the cathedral city of Ripon and the ancient city of York.
  • We had a fantastic 5 days staying at the Barn despite the weather! It’s very comfortable, cosy and most importantly warm and is equipped with everything you need. The layout worked out really well for our family of 3 and 2 dogs. Lesley and Graham were such friendly and welcoming hosts; Lesley brought over a warm apple crumble within 20 mins of being there which we devoured! The Barn is in a good central location for trips to York, Harrogate and Fountains Abbey etc. We would highly recommend this property and hope to return!

    Kate2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • The Barn was a lovely surprise in the lovely and quiet setting of Lower Dunsforth. Only a short drive from York also the Dales in the other direction, the Barn was the perfect location for us. It was really clean and spotless and Lesley had made a real effort to make us feel immediately comfortable, such as providing extra towels without being asked when I informed her our son from York had unexpectedly come to stay for the first night. The premises was really pleasant with all the amenities anyone might want. I and my wife would thoroughly recommend this as a great base for this area.

    Shane2019-06-20T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great few days in this lovely place, everything was as in pictures. The hosts were really helpful and friendly, couldn't of asked for better hosts.

  • Gorgeous cottage with everything you need right & in the middle of the countryside, great location for exploring North Yorkshire villages. Lovely place to stay with some extra special touches from the host, Lesley. Very relaxing perfect place to unwind!

    Eve2018-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Peaceful little barn with everything you need. Hosts are really friendly and helpful and make a delicious crumble. Only downside was that all the footpaths in and out of the village are overgrown and badly maintained. This isn’t something that the hosts can influence but something to bear in mind if you bring a dog. Peaceful, clean, quiet and just right!!

    Nicholas2018-07-13T00:00:00Z
  • great place in a great setting, wall to wall sunshine helped this week had an excellent stay - cant fault it

    Ken2018-07-06T00:00:00Z
  • The barn was delightful and just what we hoped it would be, the hospitality exceptional, very friendly hosts who were kind enough to provide milk when we arrived and a crumble when we got back one day. Accessible to York, the Dales, the North York Moors, Knaresborough and Harrogate, with long, light days, we have fallen in love with Yorkshire. We'll be back!

    Jean2018-06-17T00:00:00Z
  • What a find! The location was fabulous, very quiet & peaceful. Lots of great walks in & around the area. The cottage was lovely & spotlessly clean, everything you could possibly need was provided, including a very welcome rhubarb & apple crumble! Very accommodating, especially as we had some car issues while we were there. Perfectly placed for exploring the dales. Recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice short stay in Yorkshire.

The Control Tower was built in 1943 on the edge of the village of Tholthorpe, 13 miles north of York. We converted the derelict building into a family home, inspired by mid century modernist architecture and design. There is a feeling of space, light and amazing 360 views. It is a large private apartment which includes the whole of the 1st floor and balcony, plus a 2nd en -suite bedroom on the ground floor. There is also access to the roof and a lookout lounge to enjoy the views.
We offer 15% Discount for 7 nights. The Control Tower was a WW2 Bomber Command Control Tower, built in 1943 in the village of Tholthorpe, 13 miles north of York. Four Canadian Squadrons were based here 420 Snowy Owl, 425 Alloette, 431 Iroquois and 434 Bluenose. We feel privileged to live here and to be custodians of such an important Wartime building. We converted the derelict building into a family home over 25 years ago and have more recently divided it into 2 separate luxury living spaces. The Control Tower is set away from the road and is surrounded by arable fields, it is a very quiet and peaceful rural location. The Control Tower has two double bedrooms, one with en-suite shower room on the ground floor. The other bedroom has a large bathroom situated across the landing on the first floor. This bedroom also has a single folding chair bed. It can be made up with prior arrangement if two guests do not want to share the double bed. The main kitchen, living and dining space is on the first floor. This was originally the main Control Room when the building was operational. It is a large open space with views North to the White Horse at Kilburn, East to the Wolds and West to the Dales on a clear day. There is a balcony that spans the width of the building from the kitchen to the lounge and is ideal for taking in the view, it is lovely to sit out and spot the local wildlife, have a coffee, a glass of wine, or a meal and watch the sunrise or sunset! The kitchen is very well equipped and has a 2 oven Aga and an electric hob and oven, which can be used when the Aga is switched off in the summer. There is a microwave, dishwasher and large american style fridge- freezer with ice dispenser. For coffee lovers we supply fresh coffee beans, a grinder, espresso pot or cafetiere and a milk frother! In the lounge area there is a wood burning stove, two sofas, a smart TV, DVD player, a record deck and an eclectic vinyl collection. All rooms are comfortably furnished and have central heating. There is also a small roof top sun lounge up an exterior flight of stairs for the use of guests to enjoy the amazing panoramic view, wildlife spotting and star gazing!
Neighbourhood overview The picturesque village of Tholthorpe is a 10 min walk from here and has a green, duck pond and The New Inn pub, which serves excellent food and has a wood fired pizza oven (it has a small shop which is open when the pub is!) There is also Hartleys, an excellent family Butchers situated on Back Lane. The village green has a Memorial to the Canadians who served here during the War. There are many other surrounding villages with lovely village pubs, many serving great food and real ales. The closest shop is about a 5 minute drive to the village of Tollerton. The nearest supermarket is in Easingwold, a small market town 10 mins drive away. There are some spectacular places to visit, not only is the Historic City of York a short drive away, there are lovely market towns to visit such as Ripon, Knaresborough & Malton. Harrogate and Leeds are also within easy reach. The East Coast is also very accessible, the nearest resorts are Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington with Whitby about an 1hr 30mins away. The North York Moors are also well worth exploring starting at the White horse in Kilburn, there are numerous places of historical interest, such as Rievaulx Abbey and Terraces, Byland Abbey, Helmsley Castle and Walled Gardens, Castle Howard and the North York Moors Railway to name but a few. The countryside and scenery of North Yorkshire is stunning, not only looking out from The Control Tower but by foot, bike or car. It is becoming very well known for excellent cycling routes with the very popular Tour de Yorkshire on our doorstep! We have 3 bicycles available to loan if required.
  • A really unique place to stay. We received a very warm welcome and The Control Tower was a fantastic place for a couple of days of complete relaxation in stylish, comfortable surroundings. A fun place which I highly recommend!

  • Fantastic place with so much history. Brilliant place for a trip away with friends

    Clare2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • The control tower is even more stunning than the photos suggest. We had a fantastic weekend exploring York and Harrogate whilst having a tranquil relaxing place to return to. The park and ride was great too for York as it runs quite late so a day ticket let us use it both for daytime then also evening visit to York for dinner. I'm sure we'll be back to stay in future. All the little touches really made it wonderful!

  • Place was immaculate, great location, very unique stay.

    Dominic2019-11-11T00:00:00Z
  • Highly recommend. Beautiful area. Rosy is lovely, the extra little touches were a lovely welcoming. We found the place easily, lots of space for parking. The living room had a vinyl record player which was lovely to listen to whilst playing board games in the evening. Everything was wonderful and the history was really interesting.

    Claire2019-11-04T00:00:00Z
  • The control tower is an amazing place with near 360 views from the lounge. The whole place is clean and spotless, with all the amenities that you need when away from home. Rosy and Paul are tremendous hosts, a genuinely friendly couple; giving information on where to visit and to eat out. York is only a short distance, with its beautiful shops. Castle Howard is another place to visit. Or you can sit in and watch the wildlife and walk to the village pub for great food and a warm welcome. We will return in the summer.

    Steve2019-10-31T00:00:00Z
  • Super stylish and lovely, would highly recommend

    Jessica2019-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • Everything is as good and often better than purported in the property description. Exceptionally clean and decorated to a high standard. Centrally located to so much that Yorkshire has to offer. Amazing views. The historical setting is fascinating and there is plenty of interesting written and video information provided that we enjoyed very much. Also many welcoming touches and what we feel was special treatment, but is probably standard hospitality for Rosy. Do not hesitate to book your stay- we would recommend the Control Tower to anyone!

  • Loved it, modern and stylish. Enjoyed the night here for valentines day with my partner, would definitely go back and recommend. Jane was easy to connect with and was quick to respond. Thanks for a lovely evening.

  • The accommodation is comfortable and finished to a high standard. This was our second visit so we obviously love the cottage. Usefully placed for local attractions such as Fountains Abbey, Harrogate and Ripon but Boroughbridge itself seems very quiet, which was great for us. A couple of pubs we tried served good food and there is a Morrison's supermarket less than a mile away if you want to cook in the well equipped and spotless kitchen. Spoiled for choice with two bathrooms with an excellent shower in each. Every chance that we will want to come back!

The location is perfect to visit to York, Harrogate and the Moors. Both Paul & Sarah were so warm and friendly making us feel extremely comfortable in their home, the loft also feeling very private. We are ideally placed between Harrogate & York with easy access to the A1 half way between London & Edinburgh. We are in a fabulous village with a great award winning pub and a village shop which also boasts awards for excellence. A bus to York, Boroughbridge or Ripon stops at the end of the drive but having a car opens up the North Yorkshire Dales and Moors along with the city of Leeds. The house is set back away from the road with a lovely garden and fabulous views of the Vale of York.
The Den has its own access and staircase, entry is via the double garage and linked to the main house. It is very private with seating and a workspace away from the main family area. It has velux windows with blackout blinds and a private bathroom with shower. It is accessed via a turning staircase so a regular degree of fitness is necessary. The room is in the roof space above the garage and therefore has sloping ceilings.
We are a great base for Yorkshire town/city visiting with the famous Betty’s tea rooms in Harrogate York and Ilkley. Or if walkings your thing we are well placed for the Dales and the Moors. We are close to Allerton Castle Wedding venue along with Aldwark Manor, Goldsborough Hall and Ripley Castle. Newby Hall and Beningborough Hall are a short drive away. There are also a number of sporting events and festivals in the area., such as Bramham Horse Trials, York, Ripon, Thirsk, Wetherby and Catterick horse racing. Leeds Fest music festival and many more. The village has an award winning pub with a great menu and the village shop also has awards to its name. We are a relaxed household and look forward to meeting you.

It was my husbands birthday and she left us an amazing lemon drizzle cake. I hope we have a reason to go back again in future!

  • Lulu’s cottage is warm, cosy and comfortable with a very well stocked kitchen and cosy living area. Check-in was very smooth and very kindly Lulu provided some breakfast items and let us use her tennis rackets! We stayed as a group of 6 (plus a dog) and there was plenty of space for us all. It’s in a lovely location and although the weather wasn’t brilliant during our stay, on a sunnier day it would be lovely to have a game on the tennis courts and go for some local walks. Would stay again!

  • Lulu’s place is lovely and Lulu is a great host. It is hard to find somewhere that ticks all the boxes, but this one certainly did. We would recommend this stay to anyone looking for a 5 star relaxing trip away.

  • We had a wonderful stay at the cottage. Everything was perfect from great hospitality to a lovely living space & fabulous location. Lulu provided essentials to get us started then we shopped & ate locally. Lots of places to choose from & all within walking distance. We completed lots of local walks & particularly enjoyed the walk to Aldborough & another to see the, ‘Devil’s Arrows.’ The area is steeped in history with lovely scenery to enjoy. The cottage was very quiet & felt very special. Lulu was a great host & we would certainly book again. We visited for a celebration with my sisters & I would highly recommend a cosy & most comfortable stay, with plenty to keep you entertained in the area. I would return with my own family & this time use the tennis court too which looked amazing. Thank you Lulu & Patrick Jen & sisters

The Haven is a stunning farmhouse in the centre of Topcliffe, a quiet village resting on the river Swale in north Yorkshire between Thirsk, the famed ‘Darrowby’ in the popular James Herriot books. With four comfortable bedrooms, a relaxing living room with wood burner, a sociable kitchen, and dining room ideal for family games and meals, this is a perfect retreat for groups of family or friends. The enclosed courtyard, that traps the sun in summer months, is perfect for a family BBQ. Take a stroll into the village and visit one of the local pubs, with the nearest just 150 yards away. The Haven dates back beyond the 1800’s when it was once part of a larger estate and farm. The nearby market town of Thirsk has a charm of its own, essentially unchanged and influenced by the world. It centres on a bustling cobbled market square, dominated by the town clock, with its Monday and Saturday markets and independent shopping. Visitors from all over the world are impressed by the warm and friendly welcome of the residents of this town. There’s a countryside racecourse for racing enthusiasts, numerous golf courses and plenty of things to do from ATV driving, countryside walks and exploring ancient abbeys such as Rievaulx and Fountains Abbey. Picturesque Ripon is just 8 miles down the road and only 20 miles away is the medieval walled city of York, with its many family attractions and cobbled streets. Beach 40 miles. Shop 100 yards, pub and restaurant 150 yards. Free WiFi

Our lovely family house is in the hamlet of Milby, less than a mile from Boroughbridge with its many facilities. Perfectly located for riverside walks, cycling the Way of the Roses C to C and access to the larger towns of York, Harrogate and of course to the Yorkshire Dales and Moors. We have beautiful gardens which guests can enjoy and plenty of animals on our small holding, including chickens, sheep, lambs, goats, and two rescue dogs. We can provide breakfast by arrangement.
We can offer a lovely large ensuite bedroom with king size bed, stunning views and tea/coffee, tv, hairdryer etc; a second double bedroom with private bathroom is also available. A third room has twin single beds, available by arrangement. Guests can have private use of the lounge with wood burning stove for cosy evenings. We can also provide breakfast if required - with our own free range eggs! We also have secure alarmed bike storage for keen cyclists as are just half a mile off the Way of the Roses cycle route.
Milby is a tiny hamlet of just 11 houses; there is a beautiful walk from the doorstep along the river/canal banks and Milby Lock which leads to Boroughbridge (approx 20 mins). My husband is running the 'Milby Island' Conservation project, with the aim of improving the beauty, flora, fauna and wildlife (we already have kingfishers, otters, oystercatchers and many other species) for everyone's enjoyment. Boroughbridge is a thriving small town with a lovely range of shops, pubs and a supermarket and just 5 minutes from the A1
  • Was looking for somewhere close to Knaresborough for the evening as the place I had originally planned to stay fell through and to be honest, quite glad that it did. I found Carolyn & Charlie's place and thought it looked countryfied and homely and I certainly wasn't disappointed. On arrival we were met by Charlie who welcomed us and put the coffee on. Carolyn joined shortly after and we all sat in the kitchen chatting away like old friends. Turns out Carolyn makes her own Gin, can't believe I didn't manage to get her to open one of the bottles. Our rooms were spacious and spotless and the bed and pillows extremely comfortable. As we ventured out for the evening Carolyn made sure we knew how everything worked and asked us to treat the place like 'home'. We requested breakfast for Sunday morning, which at £5 per person for a full breakfast, coffee, fruit juice and lashings of toast was a steal. Carolyn and Charlie are quite delightful and very much added to our enjoyment of the weekend.

  • We couldn’t believe how lovely The Old Post Office was! It’s even better than the pictures. Everything is of the highest quality and we found everything we needed. We arrived in the evening when it was dark and were greeted by our hosts who showed us into the most welcoming entrance hallway, with a under heated floor. We all knew the minute we entered we were in for a treat!! I couldn’t believe how lovely everywhere looked in the morning when I opened the curtains. The entire house was amazing, from its cleanliness to the comfortable beds, top quality bedding/towels/kitchen appliances, everything was just perfect. I would recommend The Old Post Office to my Family and Closest friends and can’t wait to return myself.
