Places to stay in Helmsley

Places to stay in Helmsley
An original Jacobean manor built in 1620 with stone mullion windows, thick oak beams and yorkstone flags. Lovingly restored as a family home, where tradition meets mod cons from Chalon Kitchen to Linn room-to-room surround sound. Sitting in 17 meadowy acres you'll have an amazing sense of privacy and privilege when staying here. Whilst the Manor comfortably sleeps 16 plus a couple of roll-aways, the two country cottages on-site can accommodate an extra 12, if required.
A perfect retreat, Crayke Manor is regarded by many locals as the most beautiful home in the County. Not only the cosiness and solidness of the Manor itself but the way it proudly sits in its 17 acre surroundings. Near enough to the nearby village to stroll to the pub and far away enough to have ones own privacy and tranquility.
On the outskirts of the picturesque village of Crayke with its award winning The Durham Ox pub. Plentiful walks and historical sites, like Ampleforth Abbey, Rievaulx Abbey. Nearby towns like Helmsley and Easingwold. The historic city of York is only 10 miles south of the Manor.
  • We recently stayed at Crayke Manor for a family occasion. The accommodation is fantastic, with so much space and character. Ideal for larger family gatherings. The outdoor climbing frame was great for our daughter and the rest of the family enjoyed the hot tub, even in Jan. Justin was really responsive and flexible.

  • Wow! Just Wow! Just got back from an amazing stay, celebrating my Father in law’s 60th birthday with the family! The place was better than we could ever have imagined! It’s an idyllic place with so much character! There was so much space and with 16 adults and 5 children we were never on top of each other! Amazing reception spaces with the 2 sitting rooms and kitchen! It catered for everyone of our needs. The hot tub was a great touch too. We will certainly be rebooking this amazing manor!

  • The Manor is even more beautiful and equipped in reality. John and all the staff at Crayke Manor couldn’t have been more helpful or hospitable. This is a truly special place to stay.

  • This was the perfect place to house our extended family for the long weekend. Amazing house, very easy to check in and just right for our large group. Justin was extremely responsive to my messages during the booking process and before/after staying there.

  • The manor is in an idyllic setting close to the village and is a really old and impressive building. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The kitchen was really well equipped and the hot tub is a great addition!

Unique and quaint cabin in a beautiful, peaceful and private setting on our farm. Open countryside views. A great place for both couples and families. Close to local attractions such as Dalby Forest, Flamingo Land, Castle Howard, Pickering Railway. A great base to explore North Yorkshire Moors.
Ideally located to enjoy the North Yorkshire moors, Deepdale Farm's cabin accommodation is situated on a horse farm in the most stunning location over looking open countryside. Peacefully positioned on the farm to enjoy your own privacy, the cabin gives you a cosy living room/bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and two masionnette single beds (please note the access to this is small and only suitable for children and small adults) where you can holiday away from home. On winter nights snuggle up and enjoy the electric log burning stove and TV with DVD player or on summer nights BBQ outside on the patio. We are just a mile away from kirkbymoorside which has everything you need - cafes - pubs - shops - take away. Just 3 miles up the road is a quaint village Hutton Le hole with a chocolate factory and folk museum and ice cream shops. Perfect for walking too. 7 miles east is Pickering which has the North Yorkshire Moors railway where you can have a delightful day out on the steam train to Whitby at the coast. Time it right and you will see the regatta or goth week! Dalby forest is just 12 miles east which is fantastic for Segway trails, mountain biking and go ape. You can spend days here. If you fancy a bit of horse riding only 3 miles east is Friars Hill Riding stables in Sinnington. For some fine dining we have the mitchellin star restaurant in Harome - The Star Inn or the Feversham Arms in Helmsley which has the fabulous vebenna Spa - well worth booking into.
We are two miles from Hutton Le hole which is a picturesque village with great local pub. We are also only 10 minutes from Pickering which has the North Yorkshire moors railway station and lots of lovely shops and walks. York is also 40 minutes drive away as is Whitby and Scarborough. There are also lots of lovely walks on our doorstep. Please see our travel guide book on here.

  • The cabin is absolutely beautiful, cosy, warm and immaculately clean with lots of character. Beautiful surroundings. Only a 15 minute walk from the lovely village of Kirkbymoorside. We visited for some quiet time out of hectic life. We would book again. Highly recommended.

  • The log cabin is in a picturesque location on Charlotte and James farm. There is plenty of space for 2 and is a great base for exploring North Yorkshire, near the picturesque Hutton le Hole and in easy reach of Pickering and Helmsley.

    Sophie2019-11-15T00:00:00Z
  • An absolutely beautiful cabin, picturesque and just lovely. So warm and inviting. Charlotte and James really have put so much thought into the space. The landscape is breathtaking and the farm animals just made our stay. Our little boy loved his little bedroom and the sofa bed was so comfortable. We loved going out for the day to come back to the warm and cosy cabin! We can’t wait to come back again!

A secluded getaway. Night life only extends to the twit twooing of the owls. Nestled into the forest with a beck trickling by. It's perfect for those wishing to log out and explore the countryside on foot. Tons of walks including a gorgeous 4 mile round walk taking in 11th-centuary Rievaulx Abbey ruins and a cup of tea at the cafe along the way. The chocolate box town of Helmsley is just five miles away with walled garden, castle ruins, shops, restaurants and amenities.
A self contained unit with a spacious bedroom, bathroom opening through French doors on to a private deck and garden at the back. A small but well equipped kitchenette with a gas hob/oven, fridge and sink shares he entrance with a dining/sitting area. The cottage is situated next door to the host, who are on hand to help. DAB radio with aux, DVD library and wifi running at typically rural speeds.
Located on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park makes our cottage ideal for exploring the local breathtaking scenery, beautiful old market towns of Helmsley and Thirsk and picturesque villages such as Rievaulx. Perfect for visiting the historic sites of Rievaulx Abbey and Helmsley Castle as well as our modest but beautiful 1100AD Church in Old Byland. The cottage is located in an utterly idyllic and secluded part of the world, really you won't believe your eyes.
  • What a fantastic place couldnt recommend enough! Peace and tranquility at its peak!!

    James2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Such a cute little place with beautiful surroundings. Lots of cute local things to do and Katy’s place is a fantastic little place to retreat to! Myself, husband and two border collies had a fantastic stay :)

    Jess2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • We would thoroughly recomend staying here. It's set in a very remote, peaceful area. A beautiful brook running through the back garden, what more could you ask for. If you're looking for a relaxing break with some beautiful walks and scenery nearby, you'd struggle to find somewhere that ticks as many boxes as this does. Coupled with the fact that you have two wonderful and attentive (but not intrusive) hosts on hand in Katy and Skot. All in all, a wonderful place to visit, relax, unwind and recharge the batteries. We'll be back in the summer, when mother nature is a little less cruel lol.

    Andy2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is absolutely beautiful and in a really gorgeous location. My partner and I loved sitting in the armchairs in front of the big French doors, admiring the scenery and listening to the stream. The cottage is remote enough that you can really settle into nature, but there are also plenty of shops, pubs, cafes etc nearby if desired! Katy and Skot were such warm, friendly hosts and they made us feel so welcome. Katy knows the local areas well and provided some lovely recommendations for nearby cafes / restaurants. We would 100% recommend a stay here to anyone, and really hope to come back again ourselves to experience its beauty in the summer :)

    Hannah2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • What a gorgeous and tranquil location off the beaten track! It was so nice listening to the stream whilst falling to sleep accompanied with the odd hoot of an owl. The cottage was sparkling clean and well stocked of the essentials, it was cosy and warm even during a colder month like January. The hosts were very thoughtful and considerate and we couldn’t have asked for anything more.

    Sam2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Such a wonderful stay- couldn’t have asked for anything more. Cosy, comfortable and amongst wildlife. If you need a break or peaceful getaway, this place is for you.

    Lydia2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • A very remote location so perfect for hiking, stargazing, and exploring the beautiful surrounding towns. We went in winter and still had a gorgeous time, we made a fire pit which warmed us up! They were lovely hosts and went out of their way to get us what we needed. They also had a very cute dog & baby :) will be going back here!

    Eve2020-01-18T00:00:00Z
  • Great place for a retreat - lovely to wake up to the sound of the river. We had great fun watching the wildlife from a cosy cabin!

Located in Helmsley, winner of the Great British High Street - Market Town award things couldn't get more chocolate boxy when you stay in my beautiful cottage, just 1 minute walk from the town centre and 1 minute walk from stunning Duncombe Park. I will only be doing airbnb until September 2020 - so book now before it's too late! :)
I NOW HAVE WIFI AT MY HOUSE!! :)
It is a quiet street, 150 metres from the market square so not too far from the action but far enough for it to be lovely and quiet!
  • Alex’s house is a sweet, village cottage, in the centre of Helmsley, which is itself, one of the best preserved traditional villages in Yorkshire. The town has all the things you need, good food, beer, local flavour, shops with great local crafts and arts. Alex’s house has all you need and you get the chance to experience that old cottage magic, with an open fire and a cat to boot! You’ll love it.

    Shaun2020-01-06T00:00:00Z

  • Excellent find, great little cottage, old and quirky, just what we wanted. The cottage is a little extra special at night time, lovely lighting and so cosy. The garden compliments the cottage and parking is ample.

  • Cosy cottage in a wonderful part of Yorkshire.

    Graeme2019-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely cottage in a great location close to town but quiet. Pretty garden and eclectic decor, all very quirky in a well designed small space, perfect for two. Comfy bed and bathroom. Everything you need, including good WiFi and up to date tv. We loved the walk to Rievaulx and the abbey, the brewery tap just down the road (great beer!) and the atmosphere of the town generally.

    Sue2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • A cosy and quirky cottage, which is 2 minutes walk from the centre of picturesque Helmsley but still feels really peaceful. There are a few low beams which my husband hit his head on, but what would you expect when booking a cottage :-) Alex is a great host. She greeted us and gave us all the necessary information. The cottage has everything you would need and she even left tea, coffee and breakfast stuff. Helmsley itself is lovely. We enjoyed eating at mannion & co and also testing out the local pubs and Helmsley Brewing co. We did the walk to Rievaulx abbey which was great.

    Johanna2019-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • Loved it! The cottage is beautiful and Alex is a great host. Helmsley is beautiful and we can’t wait to go back for a visit. We would stay in the cottage again without hesitation!! It was so clean, and loved that you left breakfast stuff- really appreciated it! Thanks again Alex!

  • This place is beautiful. A little out of town but don’t let that stop you! It’s about 5 minutes in the car and 15-20 minutes by foot (uphill on the way back however!). Helmsley is a delightful village with plenty of shops, pubs and food shopping. It’s only about 50 minutes north of York. The property is beautifully appointed, clean and has some lovely little touches. We stayed over Christmas and it was delightful. The bedrooms are gorgeous and a very workable kitchen. Terrific hosts, check in is very easy and their communication is great.

  • This was a truly memorable stay at such a magical and unique place - it was a complete surprise, despite the good description of the Railway Carriage on the website, to see the level of detail retained from the original structure and the incredibly tasteful way in which it has been decorated to enhance its charm. Set in a gorgeous garden, the ambience as soon as you open the gate is wonderful. Louise and Richard were lovely hosts and breakfast was delicious. We had a memorable stay and would recommend this place to anyone wanting to do something a little querky. Absolutely great!

We particularly enjoyed the wall garden. The carriage has a little garden space & outdoor swing seat which we used for tea time & story time. Louises garden is very pretty & her breakfast was incredible!! We stuffed our faces. Thank you so much for such a wonderful stay. I will recommend the carriage to friends & family. Very special.

    Helmsley, YORK, United Kingdom

This beautiful, newly refurbished 18th century cottage sits in the heart of the lovely North Yorkshire market town of Helmsley. Close to a variety of local amenities and things to do, the house comfortably sleeps six people and provides the ideal option for a relaxing, self-catering break.
This gorgeous three bedroom cottage is the perfect spot to enjoy the bustling, charming, small town of Helmsley itself and also take in the surrounding rolling countryside of Ryedale, North Yorkshire Moors and beyond. Our home, with its welcoming feel, sits within the local community and is a place that our family love to escape to, whatever time of year. Much larger than it initially looks, this three bedroom cottage offers ample living space for six people but it is equally comfortable if you’re a couple as you can easily close off rooms and just use what you need to. At the front of the house, on the ground floor, there is a lovely sitting room with a large log burner, sofas and a tucked away TV. What ever the season this is a cosy room with its low ceilings, comfortable seating and nice lighting. That said, on cold days with the log burner roaring it really is a gorgeous space in which to unwind and relax. In addition, on the ground floor you have a downstairs loo but more importantly a beautiful, light and airy country kitchen with a dining table and a fabulous AGA Masterchef for those who like to cook; microwave, large fridge freezer and all cooking utensils. And at the rear of the house, beyond the kitchen is the conservatory. This room is again a spacious, light room with lots of seating, a log burner, so you can enjoy it on cooler days, and a TV. It works well as a second living space and, with the bifold doors at the end, opens up to be a great garden room. The long rear garden is private, enclosed and all yours. Upstairs, on the first floor, again you have low, beamed ceilings throughout. At the front there is a twin bedroom with views into the green fields of Duncombe Park, next to this is a nice double room bedroom and thirdly a bathroom with loo, bath and separate shower. And then up into the eaves of the house, there is a more private, larger bedroom with its own door at the bottom of the stairs, an adjoining bathroom with loo, sink and shower, a kingsize bed and views into the rear garden. To summarise what’s available to you in the house: Two log burners including fuel Two (brand new) showers Electricity throughout Full gas central heating Bed linen and towels included Two large flatscreen TVs DAB / FM radio Microwave Washing machine Dishwasher Large fridge/freezer Wi-Fi One travel cot One high chair Gun cabinet (lockable) Enclosed lawned garden with terrace and furniture Offroad parking at rear Welcome pack to help get you settled As Bridge Street is our home too, we ask a few things of you as guests. Firstly, and regrettably, we don't allow pets inside the property because of allergies and secondly, we ask you not to smoke anywhere in the house. Last thing: we’ve stylishly and responsibly newly refurbished Bridge Street. A lot of thought has gone into upcycling or carefully sourcing previously loved items so not everything matches but we feel this adds to the charm. Enjoy our house and the amazing Yorkshire countryside - we’ve given you tons of things to do in your guest info pack to help you get the most out of your stay.
Situated on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, nestled in James Herriot country, Helmsley is a picturesque, bustling Yorkshire market town. Surrounded by stunning countryside, and set within a busy working farming community, this is a perfect spot for long and short walks, delicious food, sightseeing or just generally relaxed. Helmsley itself has a lot on offer. Within walking distance of the house there are nice pubs, good restaurants, deli’s and even a beautiful ruined castle to wander around, so much so that you don’t really need to leave. Some favourites of ours include Summat's Brewin, a small microbrewery & pub which provides delicious local craft beer and then around the town square there are The Feathers, The Black Swan or The Feversham Arms. Then just outside Helmsley, there are also the Hare at Scawton and in Harome the Star Inn and The Pheasant. Manions is a gorgeous, small cafe that serves homemade gourmet food and great coffee. Also, the stunning five acre walled gardens (open from April to October) and its beautiful vine house cafe are truly unique. Then there is The Cafe on the Square, ideal for delicious cakes, light food and views over the market square and, not to forget, Ryeburn’s ice cream parlour offering award winning homemade ice cream. And just 10 minutes walk away from the house, is the Helmsley lido which is open daily between 11:45 and 19:00, from mid-June to early September.

  • We were very fortunate to be the first Airbnb guests in the lovely home. Olivia is a fantastic host, very thoughtful and brilliant at communicating with us. The house is wonderful. Great town centre location, garden, parking, wonderful sitting rooms and wood burning stoves ( with fire guards) , a fantastic kitchen with everything we needed and the beds were very comfortable and the place was sparkling clean. A real gem of a high quality holiday rental. Our two toddlers were very well catered for with equipment and cots and toys.

  • We were already excited to stay here after reading the reviews and seeing the photos but we were still so much more impressed when we got here - the location is perfect, the house is sparkling clean and so nice!Keith and Melanie made us feel at home so much and the personal touch with the sign for our anniversary and rose petals upstairs were such a lovely extra touch! We walked to the Fairfax Arms after it was suggested and it was a lovely walk and not too far! The hot tub was the icing on the cake, with the fairy lights and looking out into the woodland - it was the perfect atmosphere for a getaway! Definitely recommend - I’ve already had friends ask me for the name of this place after seeing photos - we would absolutely return again! :)

The cottage is beautifully done, all brand new, stylish with bags of character and absolutely spotless. Lots of thoughtful touches from Anna & Reece like milk, muffins, logs and even wine! Luxurious bedding and fluffy towels provided, even TVs in both bedrooms (to the kids delight!). Stove kicked out so much heat it was glorious. Could have easily stayed a week. Really nice village with a lovely pub a 5 min walk away. Can't thank the owners enough for being so welconing, will definitely be back again if you'll have us 😀

  • Anna & Reece’s cottage is everything you could want & more for a relaxing stay in the peaceful countryside. We arrived late in the evening unexpectedly thanks to traffic. But yet we were still greeted by a very welcoming Reece, who had popped the heating on for us ready for our arrival which was very much appreciated after a long cold drive. Inside is the most immaculately sparkling clean cottage, but still has a very cosy feel to it. We had all the amenities we could have possibly needed and more. Outside the cottage are plenty of countryside walks, Reece also recommended a nearby pub which served excellent food. You are also in driving distance of York. We couldn’t recommend The Owlets more, and we will definitely be back to stay again!

    Zac2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • The Owlets has been beautifully converted with great style. Lovely and cosy and well equipped.

    Jane2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Anna and Reece are brilliant hosts, nothing was too much trouble. The Owlets is sparkling clean and a real gem to have found ! This has been our second visit will definitely be back for a third ! Thank you

    Claire2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • The Owlets is a gorgeous spot and such a great base for exploring the local area. We didn't want to leave!

    Anita2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely and stylish accommodation with character. Anna and Reece were very welcoming. When they had an issue with their boiler it was fixed so quick that without the updates they gave us we wouldn’t have even known they’d had a problem. Exceptional! Don’t hesitate to book.

Beautiful 19th century stone cottage in Oswaldkirk with excellent views over the Howardian Hills. This holiday cottage offers a cosy home away from home at any time during the year. Situated on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors National Park, there is excellent walking right from the doorstep. All welcome, including children and one dog.
Cosy cottage with everything you need for a self catering holiday. Master bedroom with double bed and a small bedroom with a cabin style bed which is slightly narrower and shorter than a standard double bed. Comfortable lounge with a multi fuel burner and dining area. Fully equipped kitchen with utility area. Shower room with shower cubicle. Patio area has a table and seating for 4 with beautiful views over the Howardian Hills. Reserved off street parking in a small private car park.
Oswaldkirk is a small village just a few miles from Ampleforth and Helmsley. Helmsley is a lovely market town with a good choice of shops, pubs and restaurants. There are lots of lovely places to visit including York and Whitby. Fresh eggs can be collected from a few doors down. Just collect your eggs and leave the money in the honesty box.
  • Beautiful cottage in the Yorkshire countryside, close to many places to visit and discover on foot or by bicycle. Helmsley with its wonderful park, York with its typical architecture, Howard Castle, Whitby on the sea and Scarborough. The cottage is ideal for 3 or 4 people, warm (we were at Christmas for a week!) And collected but with everything you need and in any case bigger than what we expected. It is very accurate in detail and very clean. There was a welcome gift (red and white wine, tea and coffee, milk in the fridge and dry pastries) very appreciated. We didn't see Karen, but she was very kind and quickly replied to the messages.

  • Jean and John were the perfect hosts. They were friendly and gave us good recommendations such as the North P&R for York and where to get petrol. The annexe was everything we needed and more. We loved the added touches and the helpfulness of Jean and John when booking us a taxi to get to our restaurant. I would highly recommend this place to stay! Thank you :)

  • Jean and John’s annexe is simply THE best value we have ever had from Air BnB - beautifully run, great attention to detail and complete comfort, cosiness and privacy. They were such kind and friendly hosts and so incredibly patient with our delays in getting there. Couldn’t recommend The Buddliea Annexe and its fantastic hosts more highly!

Lovely, self-contained mini-studio apartment in a former railway station in Gilling East, on the edge of the North York Moors. Comfy double bed with TV, wifi and en-suite. Your own entrance and kitchenette. Fantastic walks and cycle rides straight from the door as well as lots of attractions further afield.
Platform 1 is a double bedroom, complete with small sitting corner, en-suite shower room and kitchenette. There's a smart TV, superfast broadfast as well as hanging space for your clothes. The shower room has an easy-to-use electric shower and supplies such as hand soap, shampoo, tissues and cotton wool balls as well as plenty of loo roll. The kitchenette has a combi-microwave oven, fridge, sink, kettle and toaster. You'll get supplies to start you off - tea, coffee, milk and biscuits - and there's a 'breakfast' bar where two people can eatcomfortably side by side. Platform 1 also has its own seating area outside on the railway platform. It's a lovely place to sit out and has a beautiful view up towards Oswaldkirk.
Gilling itself: The lovely thing about Platform 1 at Gilling Station is that you can walk straight from the door into the most beautiful countryside. There are lots of woods, lakes and streams. It's a popular spot for walkers, mountain bikers and road bikers too. Our favourite walk at the moment is straight over the road and up the valley to the Anthony Gormley statue. It has a wonderful view of the Ampleforth Valley and is a very special place. Within three/five miles: Hovingham tea rooms and bakery are a must. Their cakes are fantastic and it's set by a little stream and ford. It's a nice bike ride away. Ampleforth Abbey is worth a visit. The tea rooms in particular are very nice. Within ten/15 miles Helmsley's great. It has super food shops and cafes and Friday's market is very good. Obviously there's the castle too and Duncombe Park. In summer it has an outdoor swimming pool which we like very much. The walk from Helmsley to Rievaulx is really worth doing but there's many other lovely walks too. Nunnington Hall - Is so worth a visit. It's a stunning National Trust building and has lovely gardens too. Castle Howard - Is just stunning. The house is wonderful as are the grounds and the garden. Goes without saying that it has lovely tea rooms and a very nice garden centre. Easingwold - Easingwold is just a very nice market place and very much worth stopping in on your way to York. Tea Hees is a very nice coffee shop as is the Curious Table. York is 30 minutes to the outskirts. Fantastic place to visit at any time of year. Whitby and the Yorkshire coast are popular destination for our guests. There are so many spots to recommend but our favourites have to be Sandsend, Staithes and Runswick Bay.
  • Sarah’ place is the perfect base for visiting this area. So many wonderful things to do in close proximity, including wonderful walking straight from the door. All the comforts you need for your stay including thoughtful touches like milk, tea, coffee, biscuits for your arrival and luxury travel size shampoo, conditioner and shower gel in the bathroom. Gorgeous view from the bedroom window and really interesting reading about the history of the station. Would highly recommend the afternoon tea at Ampleforth Abbey tea rooms - food plentiful and delicious and the free tea refills were much appreciated. Castle Howard is fabulous but I think Rievaulx Abbey was definitely our top destination. The walk from Hemsley is enjoyable through fields and woodland and the abbey itself is breathtakingly huge and architecturally stunning against the backdrop of this tiny village, Rievaulx, complete with a chocolate box thatched roof cottage. We just scratched the surface of this wonderful area so will most definitely be contacting Sarah in the future when we return.

    Josephine2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Had a very comfortable and relaxing stay, visiting family in the area. Convenient for travelling to York and Helmsley and the village of Gilling is lovely. The space is cosy and the bed is very comfortable. We stay regularly and will certainly come back again.

  • The cottage is really lovely, spotlessly clean, everything you would need is provided along with extra nice bits. The decor is modern and stylish whilst being homely and very comfortable. It is just minutes walk from Helmsley centre and castle and Rivaulx Abbey walk. I would highly recommend a stay here. Amanda is an excellent host, super quick responses and friendly. Definitely a great place to stay.

  • This is a spacious and very comfortable house located very close to the centre of Helmsley. We were six people and a dog - four adults and two children - and we found this house worked very well indeed for our stay. The house is well equipped and, with three bathrooms, three bedrooms, dining room, sitting room and a further seating area, everyone had plenty of space. Amanda, our host, kept in touch to make sure we had everything we needed. A property to be very highly recommended.

    Charmian2019-10-30T00:00:00Z
  • This is a wonderful house, two minutes from the centre of Helmsley. Three good sized bedrooms, all en-suite, comfortable lounge, sunroom, separate dining room and a well-equipped kitchen. The gardens are pretty and would be a real asset in the warmer months. The property was spotless. We would stay again without hesitation.

    Mary2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • This little house was a real go.e from home. It had everything we needed and was very convenient with a short walk into the high street. Helmsley is a lovely market town.

  • We loved staying at Amanda's place in Helmsley. The place is spacious and has a lovely feel, there's a good range of communal and outdoor space and sleeps 6 very comfortably. The location is amazing you can be in the centre of town or within open countryside in less than 5 minutes. Amanda was a great host, responsive in communication before and during our stay and could not have been more helpful. If you need a base for exploring the North York Moors you won't find many better than this. Matt and Hannah - South London.

Cosy cottage located in the North York Moors National Park with gorgeous big skies! A super base for exploring castles, abbeys, villages and the Heritage coast. Spoilt for choice in eateries from great local pubs to Michelin starred restaurants all with a 10 mile radius. Many guests comment on how peaceful and calm their stay has been. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, families with children and pets (one, well behaved dog only).
The cottage is located at the top of Sutton bank, halfway between Thirsk (7 miles) and Helmsley (7 miles). Due to its elevated position, the views (and sunrises) are beautiful. One mile from the National Park Visitor Centre and in touching distance to many other attractions.
  • Lovely place to stay:) the cake was a nice touch :) very welcoming and happy for our puppy to run around free :)

  • The cottage was a wonderful place to spend Christmas. The bedrooms were bigger than expected, the kitchen although small is very well equipped and able to handle Christmas lunch for 4. The location is lovely. Nice views, close to many local sites and walks. Great access to the stunning suttongl Bank. There was an electrical issue which caused power outages on Christmas day, the owners stopped their own day to dins a solution to get us through cooling lunch, then aore permanent solution after we had finished eating, and then had an electrician out the day after boxing day, an unfortunately timed incident handled very well by the owners. A lot of apologies and a bottle of fizz was left to make ammends. Would happily stay again and recommend to friends.

  • We had a very pleasant and relaxing stay at Lucy’s cottage. The cottage was clean, warm and cosy and had everything we needed for our short stay. • A lovely, comfortable and relaxing cottage in a wonderful location. Lucy was really helpful before we arrived and got in touch to give us some practical information and some great tips about what to do whilst we were there.

    Finlay2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • We have a lovely stay at Lucy's cottage. The cottage itself has everything you need and there is so much to do and see in the surrounding area.

    Rosie2019-11-04T00:00:00Z
  • Set in an amazing location, the cottage was so quiet and the views spectacular. Just a couple of minutes from Sutton Bank Visitor Centre and the many many lovely walks from there. The cottage was lovely and clean and very spacious. The addition of underfloor heating was a bonus and it was nice to feel warm tiles underfoot and a nice temperature throughout the cottage. Our puppy certainly loved it! Lucy was very welcoming leaving some essentials and a cake for us on our arrival. Top tips: 1) The gate opens outwards so stop your car slightly short of the gate on arrival. 2) Make sure to look up at night - it’s in the Dark Sky Discovery Area so the stars are amazing. 3) Set your alarm for sunrise and sit out the front and enjoy. Simply stunning. Will definitely stay here again when exploring the North York Moors National Park.

Come and stay in our small but perfectly-formed guest space! It's completely separate from the main cottage, so you have privacy and can come and go as you please. It's warm and cosy and luxurious, and the en-suite offers a wonderful shower! And breakfast is included.
Cross the rose-covered patio and take the stone steps down into this charming guest space created within an old stone barn, and discover original features including exposed timber beams.
Stonegrave is situated in the heart of Ryedale, North Yorkshire, and is an excellent base for exploring the North York Moors, the nearby market towns of Helmsley and Malton, and the Hambleton Hills to the south. Castle Howard and Rievaulx Abbey are just a short drive away. Closer to home there are wonderful walks through countryside from the door, especially if you want to include pubs or tea rooms. To the north It's a lovely mile over the hill to Nunnington with its gallery, artisan workshops and coffee shop. To the south Hovingham is about two miles, where the Cricketers Bar and Worsley Arms, village shop, bakery, and both tea rooms will serve you well. And the excellent Fairfax Arms is just three miles down the lane at Gilling East.
  • Thanks to James for having us! This is a great little Annex close by to the national parks for those with cars! Great spot to catch some sleep. There are lots of lovely (but expensive) local restaurants/pubs to try out - around 5-10 minutes drive down country lanes. Breakfast is provided in the room - cereals, teas, coffees and delicious home-made bread which can be warmed up in the mini-oven. However, other meals are not provided/no space for cooking as kitchen access isn't available. Perfect though if you're keen to check out the local spots, and feeling cosy and cottage-y. Thanks again for having us!

We live in Fadmoor, right on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, between the beautiful dales of Farndale and Bransdale. Great for hiking and mountain biking, or sightseeing; the famous mediaeval city of York is about 25 miles to the South. The accommodation is an Annex to our house, with its own entrance opening on to a utility area with downstairs toilet. There are two bedrooms, a separate shower room and a living/dining area. We only rent the Annex to a single party.
We charge per bedroom, so if you only require one, you'll still have the place to yourself. The basic charge is for two guests using one bedroom. If you need the other bedroom for more guests, please add 50% to the fee. If you have an additional child, we can provide another fold up bed at a modest extra cost. You're welcome to use the facilities in the utility room which is part of the annex: sink; fridge/freezer; washing machine; tumble dryer; microwave. Tea, coffee, milk etc will be provided, as well as cereals for a light breakfast. The living space comprises a large room with patio doors opening on to the gravel drive. There's a very comfortable sofa and chair at one end and a large dining table and chairs at the other. All bed linen and towels are included and there will be soap, shower gel, shampoo etc for you to use. The shower is electric, so there is plenty of hot water available after a hard day walking or cycling! If you do need to clean of boots or mountain bikes, there's an outside tap and hose. There's ample parking on the drive for several cars. If something isn't included in the listing, please just talk to us when you arrive and we'll help as much as we can.
If you love hiking or mountain biking, this is the place for you! The National Park boundary runs through the middle of Fadmoor and the edge of the moors is just to the North. We can help with suggestions for routes and lend you maps. Farndale is world famous for the wild daffodils which flower in the spring and people travel from all over the world to walk through the dale. The coast is also about a 45 minute drive away; the well known town of Whitby and the Yorkshire Jurassic coast are within easy reach. There is a pub / restaurant about 10 minutes walk away and two Michelin starred restaurants a short drive away, the Black Swan at Oldstead owned by the famous Banks brothers and the Star at Harome. Kirkbymoorside is a few minutes drive and has small supermarkets open 'til late 7 days a week in case you run out of gin!

  • The cottage is great, though I would prefer to have the bathroom upstairs and not to have to walk down the stairs during the night. Liz who manage the place is amazing, super friendly and both her husband and herself are always there when (if) you need them. The cottage was really warm (we arrived late at night) and super clean. A beautiful place to stay at!

My place is in the Centre of Helmsley very quiet with great views but close to all the shops, galleries, restaurants and Duncombe Park. It is a lovely modern spacious but homely house, great for couples, families and small groups, who want to explore North Yorkshire. Well behaved dogs are allowed . The adjacent property, Feversham Cottage, 1 Stonegarth can be let with this property. It is ideal for two families that want privacy but can come together for meals etc
The house has just been completely renovated to provide spacious open plan modern living downstairs with bifold doors opening onto the garden. The open plan area includes a dining area with seating for 6, leading onto the sitting room with comfy sofas and a couple of armchairs. Upstairs the property has been extended to provide 3 bedrooms that are all ensuite. There are two double bedrooms and a further bedroom with 2 single beds. There is a separate loo and washbasin downstairs. There is a utility room with washing machine, tumble dryer and extra large freestanding fridge/freezer. Towels and bed linen are provided, changed on a weekly basis unless requested otherwise. Outside there is a small private garden with outdoor furniture and 2 car parking spaces to the font of the property.
Helmsley is a unique location as it is a small very attractive market town which won the award for the best small market town in the country. It is extremely attractive with an abundance of restaurants all within walking distance. Amazing walks can be taken from the property or if you jump in the car the walks are just unlimited and stunning. Located in a very quiet, pleasant cul de sac behind the award winning Feversham Arms with its exclusive Spa. It is a stone's throw from the historic centre of Helmsley, a delightful market town nestling in the foothills of the North Yorkshire Moors. Helmsley has excellent shops, cafes, restuarants and a weekly market. The local attractions of Rievaulx Abbey, Duncombe Park with the International Centre for Birds of Prey, Helmsley castle and walled gardens are all within walking distance of the property. This is a perfect location for visiting the surrounding areas of, Ryedale, York and the attractive North Yorkshire coastline including Robins Hood Bay and Whitby. In the summer months Helmsley benefits from an open air, heated swimming pool, just a 5 minute walk away from the property. At Kirbymoorside there is an 18 hole champion standard golf course. There are also Riding Schools located within Helmsley, Sinnington and further afield. The famous North Yorkshire Moors Railway is located in Pickering, 13 miles away, with regular steam trains to Whitby.
  • Beautiful well equipped house that contains everything you need for a break away. We stayed as two families with three children aged 5, 2 and 1 and they all had a fantastic time. Easy 3 minute walk into the centre of Helmsley but tucked far enough away to make you feel like you are in the middle of the countryside. The recent renovations are fantastic and as other reviews have said, the photos really don’t do it justice. Hopefully we will return again one day

    Simon2019-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • We were the first guests to stay after a recent renovation. The house is beautiful. The downstairs layout is very open and sociable. Upstairs, three double bedrooms each with en suites allows space and privacy when staying with a larger group. The location is a short walk to the local shops, cafés and outdoor pool.

    Gilly2019-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • House is ideally positioned for easy reach to the centre of Helmsley ( 2 mins walk away). We loved the little touches, such as milk in fridge and biscuits. The house has everything you could possibly need to ensure a lovely, relaxing stay. Garden is super; secure and enclosed for the dog. We enjoyed a walk in nearby countryside accessed straight from the house. We enjoyed a lovely meal out at The Feathers pub (recommend booking). Would definitely recommend Amanda's house and would love to return sometime soon.

    Lynne2018-10-29T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent accommodation, well equipped, spotlessly clean and convenient for walking into Helmsley and its attractions, and a great base to visit all the North Yorkshire Moors and atttractions.

    Susan2018-10-25T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful house in a great location. Spotlessley clean and well featured. Everything you need a short walk away including the village, shops, great restaurants and a lovely microbrewery. Great communication and all the facilities that you would expect in a true home from home. We are hoping to return soon.

    Ian2018-09-09T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay here. The house house is in an excellent location, in a beautiful village. It is a 5 min walk to the market square, pubs and restaurants, and 10 mins until you are in the parkland of Duncome park. There is a nice garden to sit out in the sun. The house had all the facilities we needed to cook and have a pleasant stay. Access was by key safe which made for a relaxed arrival. I would happily stay here again.

    Tarquin2018-05-29T00:00:00Z
  • Amanda's place is really lovely, I couldn't fault it. The house was spotless with beautiful gardens to sit out in. I had a really enjoyable and peaceful stay, everything I needed was there and Amanda was in touch and available should I have any questions. The house is in a perfect position, a lovely view out to the church and a very short walk to Helmsley market place where there are pubs and cafes to sit and watch the day go by. Helmsley is a beautiful town and well worth a visit and I'd highly recommend Amanda's as the perfect place to stay

    Shirley2018-05-22T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely place to stay in a great location literally a minute walk to the market square in Helmsley where there are lovely shops and pubs. The house was clean and tidy and had everything we needed for a weekend - even sharp knives in the kitchen which you rarely get in a holiday let!! Comfy beds, fluffy towels and a big dvd selection made this a perfect stay.

This cottage, in the village of Wrelton near Pickering, was a 19th century blacksmith's forge and has now been renovated into a delightful living space complete with fully-equipped kitchen, large living room area, bathroom with walk-in shower and a cosy bedroom located on a mezzanine floor which is reached via a spiral staircase. The Old Forge offers a great location for a relaxing stay in beautiful North Yorkshire.
Inside, within the lounge area, you will find a sofa, armchair and a widescreen TV. There is a dining table and chairs. In the kitchen, you’ll find an oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge as well as other equipment you will need for cooking. The bathroom has a shower, heated towel rail as well as all other necessities. The bedroom, on the mezzanine floor, has a king-size bed. The cottage is equipped with an underfloor heating system. Original features of the blacksmith’s forge have been maintained, including horseshoes, window and a beautiful stone floor. The Old Forge can be accessed easily by car or bike with space for parking outside it. A short drive will take you to Pickering, Helmsley and Malton. The North York Moors National Park and the coastal town of Whitby are also not far away. The North York Moors Railway can take you by steam train from nearby Pickering to Whitby. The train travels through 24 miles of North Yorkshire's amazingly beautiful scenery. The cottage is a great location for walks and cycling through stunning countryside. We are happy to help our guests with directions or finding anything they may require after arriving in Wrelton. The Old Forge is a private building so once the keys have been exchanged, guests will have exclusive use. Another bonus is that the Old Forge is only a two minute walk from the village pub, The Buck Inn. Wrelton is on the 128 bus route to Helmsley (west) and Scarborough (east).
  • Olwen’s cottage is very clean, cosy and welcoming. There were thoughtful touches on arrival and the communication was great. The cottage is in a quiet village but good access to Dalby Forest, Pickering and Whitby. There is a great pub down the road as well. Would definitely visit again.

    Clara2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • What an amazing place, full of charming character and history. The cottage is presented beautifully, with thoughtful touches that really exceed standards experienced from other Air BnB’s. Olwen was incredibly friendly, helpful and informative. The perfect place for a break away and would highly recommend!

    Lucy2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay in this cosy little cottage. It gave us a real taste of Yorkshire life for a few days! Everything was lovely and Olwen was extremely hospitable!

    Robert2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • I selected the Forge at Wrelton because we wanted a base for a long weekend between York and Whitby for my partners birthday. If you are looking to stay in this area (which is beautiful) you have to stay at Olwen’s place. Her communication was great and the property was easy to find. Inside it was just perfect for a couple, beautifully appointed and decorated. It was immaculately clean with everything you could want and Olwen had thought of everything from finishing touches like fresh flowers and leaving a couple of special treats as I had told her in advance we were celebrating a birthday. Don’t think twice, just book it! You won’t be disappointed. Thank you again Olwen!

  • Olwens cottage is stylish, cool, relaxing, very comfortable and cosy. We loved everything about it, and the extra little touches were the icing on the cake. We had cookies, champagne n lovely welcome note on arrival, enjoyed the local pubs for food and escaped the busy lifestyle in the cottege. Would definitely recommend.

    Richard2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
