Places to stay in Gasquet
Glamp in the forest- you know you've always wanted to! Our canvas bell tent sits atop a redwood deck in a lovely forest setting, surrounded by mature fir trees, young cedars, rhododendrons, huckleberry and ferns. Private outdoor hot water shower and clean composting toilet are exclusively for guest use. Perfect for adventurers exploring the redwoods, individuals seeking a quiet getaway and travelers who forgot to book a room for the night. We have a unique and special place we love to share!
Nestled in the Smith River National Recreation Area, our property consists of 1.6 acres of land directly off Hwy 199 in Gasquet, Ca. We have one close neighbor and butt up to miles and miles of wilderness which can give our place some serious rural vibes. However, the echoes from the hwy remind us of it's close proximity and the convenience it brings. We are located less than 1/4 mile from a fantastic swimming hole on the majestic Smith River, just 10 miles north of Jedediah Smith State Park and 24 miles from the breathtaking coast. For any last minute essentials, ice and fuel we have two local markets just minutes away. Our year-round creek with foot bridge separates our home and living area from our guests' space. The 171 square foot Sibley 450 Pro-Tech tent is just barely visible from our front door and sits on top of a newly built salvaged old growth redwood deck. Roll up the side walls for a 360 degree private view of the forest around you- the no-see-um screen provides ventilation and necessary bug protection. Accommodations inside the tent include a comfortable queen bed, warm blankets and simple furnishings. For those who plan to prepare and cook meals during their stay, we provide an ice chest, a Coleman 2-burner propane camp stove (propane provided) that sits atop a camp table for food prep, a picnic table, dinnerware and cutlery, a knife, cutting board, can opener, drinking cups, coffee mugs, a coffee pour over, two pans, a pot, and a simple outdoor wash station (dish soap and drying towel included). Important Additional Information: -As much as we all love a good campfire, open flames will NOT be allowed due to high risk of wild fires. -Because we share our forests with other living creatures, our guests will be required to deliver all garbage to designated receptacle each evening as well as store all foods in a locked container (provided) overnight. -Groups larger than 2 please inquire- we may provide an additional camp pad / vinyl tent / etc. for an additional fee.
One of our favorite things about our location is our ability to walk to the Smith River. We are within miles of many excellent swimming holes. When we feel the need to hug some redwood trees we drive 10 or so miles to any one of Jed Smith Redwoods State Park's hiking trails. Some days we crave the fresh, local coastal breeze so we make the 16 mile drive to the ocean!
  • So fun! This place is a stylish and well appointed take on glamping that has everything you might need while staying rustic. Running water in a small sink and the (excellent) outdoor shower made my stay very comfortable. Would be great to stay a week here in the summer! Adam and Sara also great providers of local tips, i had very good communication with them and got help with everything I needed on the spot.

  • Amazing place to stay! Highly recommend!!!

  • We spent a wonderful night in Gasquet, along the Smith River. The tent is awesome, so is the open-sky shower. We had the opportunity to meet Adam, Sara and Emory in person: they are fabulous hosts, dedicated and full of delicate attentions. We really appreciated the breakfast basket prepared by Sara ;-) Deeply recommended!

  • Very cute and comfortable glamping experience. We came on a rainy day and stayed dry and warm. Lots of thoughtful touches make the tent feel like a home. Very beautiful forrest surroundings. I recommend.

  • Super cute place conveniently close to all the local nature areas! Very comfortable bed and awesome facilities! Adam & Sara have really thought of everything to make this your most comfortable stay outdoors in their beautiful woods!

  • What a unique and beautiful stay! As others have reviewed, the highway noise was a bit of a turnoff but it is still very peaceful. Private, clean and perfectly decorated space.

    Ashley2019-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • This spot is an absolute oasis! We could not have asked for better amenities or location. We would definitely recommend this stay to anyone traveling to this area.

    Sarah2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • SO much fun!! Would definitely recommend. The outdoor shower is amazing, bed was super comfy, and it’s super close to the river!! All in all it’s an amazing spot.

For your comfort and convenience: washer/dryer, firm Queen bed, Roku TV, love seat recliner, computer desk with a choice of chairs, and a separate dining table so nothing has to be moved around to create a work or entertainment area. Free onsite parking. Ideal for outdoor sports: fishing, kayaking, hiking, biking, running.
The complete kitchen has a stove and refridgerator plus pots, pans, dishes, glasses, and utensils for four, also offers small appliances including microwave, blender, mixer, toaster, and coffee maker with regular and decafe coffee. Gasquet is a rural, residential ( approximately 600 persons) community located in the heart of the Smith River National Recreation Area, 10 minutes from Jed Smith Redwoods National and State Park. Nestled next to the Wild and Scenic Smith River and surrounded by a conifer and hardwood forest, Gasquet is desirable for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages: hikers, bikers, fishermen and women, kayakers, and swimmers. It is beautiful and quiet. It has a small airstrip and Highway 199 for auto access, so you may hear the occasional private plane or traffic sounds. There are only two services, a post Office and a small but well-appointed grocery/liquor store. Other services are nearby-- only minutes away. Because Gasquet enjoys more sunshine, it is known as the "banana belt" of Del Norte County.
  • Your own very special apartment with a thoughtful, creative caretaker of the space. Very sweet and loving dog (Quill) and cats (Mojo and Truffle) along with your very own backyard (covered area available under a gazebo if raining) access to Smith River!! Fully stocked kitchen, fridge, bathroom, and private entrance. Gasquet is a great community where you can walk along the Bubba Way and meet the neighbors who are all friendly. Eileen will give you detailed info on where you should stop for groceries on your way and what to expect. You can control the temperature and there is a skylight for natural lighting. ENJOY!

There's a beautiful view of the mountains from both the living room and master bedroom. The dining space can comfortably hold 6 people. The gorgeous Smith River is only 3 min away for fishing, rafting and swimming. Crescent City and beach is 20 min away. Nov through March is our prime fishing season.
Spacious home with a knowledgeable host to enhance your experience. The paintings on the walls are all of the area.
A quiet, remote location at the end of a small runway, Ward Airfield. Most of the residents are retired from the Forestry Department or law enforcement. Small grocery store, post office, K - 8 school with a full playground nearby.
  • Spectacular place. Darrel is the perfect host, thanks for all the information about hikes, restaurants and secret trails. Me and my family spent an incredible weekend, best place ever!

  • Darrel's place was great for a weekend retreat. It was very spacious and had a very well stocked kitchen. The house was easy to find, even in the dark, and Darrel was a very responsive and supportive host. We really enjoyed all the hiking trails and wildlife nearby!

    Ling2019-12-24T00:00:00Z
  • Full access to the house and all the appliances. Large space good for families. Darell is SO generous and even offered any of the food and laundry detergents there as well. He offers great advice of local to do’s and must see’s. He was always available by text or phone for any questions or concerns. Also there is a small landing strip where small planes land just feet away from the front yard. A site to see!

  • We’re traveling through Cali from Washington so it was a nice stopping point for the day. We arrived at night and upon the arrival, it was kind of creepy and intimidating...( it was also 10 pm lol). The air cuts on and off but when it cuts off ... it’s noticeably quiet and a little eerie. It’s way less intimidating during the day though! Darrel has a unique taste with decorating but it’s a pretty neat layout overall. The bathroom and shower with the seat was really nice ! Friendly people! Thank you again.

    Olivia2019-11-30T00:00:00Z
  • Darrel’s place was great-clean, spacious, and quiet surroundings. Enjoyed sitting outside on the Lazy Boy drinking my coffee and watching my dog run around the large property. It was fun picking berries and apples to take home:) Darrel was awesome!Super friendly, flexible and very helpful.

    Emma2019-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • Darrel's home was better than expected. Darrel is a phenomenal host who makes sure his guests are well taken care of. 5/5 would stay again.

    Weston2019-09-12T00:00:00Z
  • The house was located in a very nice location near the beautiful Smith river and amazing redwoods. The house itself was very spacious and fun. All of the amenities you would expect and more. Darrel was very enthusiastic and helpful. He pointed out a great area to explore the redwoods. Frodo the cat was friendly!

Located close to Jedidiah Smith State Park and Old Growth Redwoods, you’ll enjoy riverfront rights on the Smith and the great fishing on the property. Great for couples, solo adventurers, and families.
The cottage has all the basics for simple cooking (pots/pans, dishes, silverwares, etc) but access to spices, oils, baking supplies, is a work in progress. I'm working on developing a "standard" list of supplies to be found here, but if you need nutmeg for you rum-cake, you're on your own for now ;)
Gasquet is a very small town, so you won't be bothered by traffic or most noise pollution. Occasionally the airstrip gets lively if there are flight lessons, but thats always during mid-day. Gasquet Flat Rd is a very nice 1-mile walk to the store, which has pretty much all the basics and occasionally more, with friendly neighbors and lots of cute houses to admire on the way. Everyone drives slow on the "Flat Road", so walking with dogs/kids is never a problem. As a reminder, Gasquet is a community of homes, so this isn't a seclusive cottage in the woods, and while every dog in Gasquet is friendly as far as I've encountered, there are some (including my own) who are privileged to roam freely and say hello to neighbors.
  • This was our second stay and we loved it just as much as the first. Perfect getaway at the gateway of redwood country.

    Jonathan2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • Great cabin, easy to stay here. Excellent heater and appliances, and well stocked. Great location and overall very comfortable place to stay. All the right kitchen amenities, plenty of towels and blankets, good lighting. The bunk beds in the same room as main bed are nice for younger children, although the upper bunk doesn’t have a safety rail- nobody fell out during our stay, and my kids are pretty rowdy sleepers. There are also tons of fishing related maps and guides for the local area.

    Tiffany2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • This is our 4th time back. Love the location. The cabin is a perfect little getaway for us.

    Josh2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • This is an adorable cabin in beautiful Gasquet. Direct access to the river makes convenient recreation and beautiful scenery. Your family will love it.

    Katy2019-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • Adorable spot! Great communication from Ben. Lots of helpful info about fishing laid out in the cabin. The kitchen was well-appointed. Access to the river was easy. The heaters kept the place plenty warm. We hope we get to go back!

  • Great little cabin on the river in Gasquet. It provided everything we needed - the kitchen was well stocked, the bed was comfortable, the shower was hot and the spot on the river was fantastic!

Approximately 260 sq ft, earth sheltered structure within our permaculture-based, sustainable, off-grid village. It is one of a kind in architecture and theme with colored bottles built into the wall, stained glass windows, center tree pillar with atrium windows above, and medieval Celtic Cross above the Hobbit Hole (outside and atop) give it a Hobbit Church feel.
This is a primitive cabin, it DOES have running water, but NO electricity (you bring your own candles BYOC). Common facilities (kitchen and bath) being shared with the larger community, about 200 yds away. *Just so everyone knows, during heavy rains in our RainForest winter months, sometimes the floor can get a little wet by the door. It doesn't really impede anything, but fyi. And understand, this is essentially a cave, so it can be damp in the winter. I recommend bringing an extra sleeping bag or borrow on of ours, OR bring some firewood (or you can use ours) as there is a wood stove inside next to the tempurpedic, round, Hobbit Love Nest Bed. Breakfast nook has a Hobbit mushroom table and there is a comfy sky chair suspended for luxuriating. Built into the side of a mountain with a seasonal spring (there are springs everywhere here in the mountainous rain forest) that runs through the house -- on purpose -- so there is often the sound of a babbling brook in the HH November thru May. If you are looking for a unique experience in a beautiful natural area and would like to experience life in an off-grid, sustainable, permaculture-focused ecovillage - and all the rough roads, dirt, mud, insects, messes, barking dogs, mosquitos, bees, mice, early morning roosters, communal living, composting toilets, ongoing construction projects in remote wilderness - then we invite you join us in our mountain village! Our property encompasses 160 acres of pristine natural wilderness in Northern California's beautiful Smith River canyon - home of the only un-dammed river in the state. Lush fern-encrusted hillsides slope down to countless spring-fed streams, teeming with wildlife, from cute caterpillars to (also cute, sometimes!) black bears. Accessible only by forestry road from scenic Redwoon Hwy (CA-199,) this is an opportunity to experience our responsible natural relationship with Mother Earth. This location is very beautiful and quite remote, so please be sure you've read through the full description and are prepared for certain elements of "roughing it" and adventure travel. The Village is also a work-in-progress so we are likely to be working and there may be construction, dirt, and messes around! Amenities: •Lighting / Electricity: Your cabin does not have electricity; we try to keep a flashlight, lantern, and/or candle available for your use -- but we recommend that you bring your own lights. •Kitchen: The outdoor kitchen, about 200yds away from the Hobbit Hole, has a small propane camping stove, and plenty of pots, pans, and utensils for your use. We do not have refrigeration but we do have a freezer (with ice packs) and coolers for storing food. •Bathrooms: We use composting toilets (buckets with seats); there is an indoor toilet in the bathhouse. Hot shower in the sauna/bathhouse. It is about 200 yds on average away from most of our cabins •(Lack of) Phone / Internet: Some Verizon and US Cellular service is available, but AT&T and T-Mobile do not service our area. We do not have wifi. The Great Outdoors: •Domestic animals: Between the three dogs who run around at night chasing forest creatures, springtime frog concerts, and the early-rising chickens, it is likely that there will be some animal noises occurring at unpredictable moments during the night and day. •Wild animals: There are various of these that live in the forest, including skunks, chipmunks, foxes, black bears, and many birds and insects. Since we have dogs and people around, the wild animals tend to keep their distance from the areas that we use. If you are lucky, you might spot a black bear on a hike; they are basically like big raccoons and prefer to run away from humans. If you are looking for a unique experience and up for rustic accommodations with a few off-grid perks, we welcome you to join us in our mountain paradise!
Our 160-acre property is surrounded by about a million acres of National Forest. Our neighborhood is all made of trees, huckleberry bushes and animals. We love it here. It is very remote, peaceful, and functionally sustainable in its focus. The closest neighbor is a Buddhist Hermitage about a mile up the forestry road. Also, supposedly, Sasquatch live here! (it is the epicenter for documented sightings) Most visitors to the area are interested in spending time in the redwoods – we are about 30-45 minutes from the nearest entrance to Jedediah Smith Park, home of Stout Grove and other beautiful redwood hikes. Driving into Crescent City, about 45-60 minutes, winds you right through the "gentle giants" on your way to or from Redwood National Park.
  • Awesome space, Dan is very kind, welcoming, I would definitely stay there again or in another building. Dans descriptions are accurate. Also the stars at night are something else ❤️

    Thomas2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • Couldn’t have asked for a better spot for a unique getaway. Everything was just as we were hoping for. During the day you enjoy spectacular views of vast mountains. At night, the stars seem to be within your grasp. It was truly beautiful.

    Robert2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Such a beautiful magical place

    Jonathan2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • Unique and cozy space!

    Andres2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Everyone we met in the village was warm and welcoming. Dan’s instructions on how to get there were on point. Definitely arrive in the daylight, we would have certainly been lost otherwise. Dan sends out great instructions and expectations. This is not a luxury getaway and he makes that clear. What it is, is an adventure off the grid in some peaceful woods. We stayed in the Hobbit Hole which was wonderful and very cozy. We would certainly entertain the other dwellings in warmer climates!

    Emily2020-01-06T00:00:00Z
  • This is an INCREDIBLE and magic filled oasis - the journey in is just as exciting as the destination itself. Think inner child released, imagination run wild, and all the potential only asking to be tapped. For something so wild, everything was clean and amenities easily accessible. Do it. Do it now!

    Breanna2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • 10/10 would recommend. This place is SO FREAKING COOL, an absolutely beautiful area, the views are awesome, and the village is just such a fantastic place (there are GOATS!) Dan's instructions on how to get there are really clear and the drive is super beautiful. Dan was easy to communicate with, the place was lovely and clean (honestly unbelievably clean especially considering it's a cave) the space is just incredible, great details, and really comfortable! Could not recommend highly enough!! (Also great job on the eco-ness of the place - I love it!)

    Stephanie2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Don’t knock it till you try it! I would disclose that when I went with my partner, I didn’t read the information, saw the cheap price, and clicked right away as we were on a trip and looking for a place fast. But we were not disappointed, after we read the info we came prepared with firewood and some candle lights that we bought on the road. That being said, the house was such a great adventure! It was the most fun I’ve had in a while on a trip. We shuttered up and hunkered by the fireplace and just talked all night as we weren’t distracted due to no electricity or reception. Do come prepared, read the directions provided and do come with a spirit. Walk nicks trail! You would not be disappointed! Thanks Dan for letting us stay! We hope we can come back!

BMH is a family & pet friendly home! It's in the Six River's National Park, on the Middle Fork of the Smith River. It's a perfect spot for swimming, kayaking, fishing and just enjoying the scenery! We do charge a 10% occupancy tax. I will need to collect that upon arrival, by check or cash.
BMH is a comfortable house, with a full deck on the river side! In the summer, the river is wonderful! Shallow enough for the kids, perfect for water activities. In the winter, a perfect location for fishermen!
Gasquet is a community of about 600 people. The Flat is shaded, perfect for walks, just enjoying the fresh air and friendly people! We have a small market and a post office. The area is full of great hiking trails, plus only about 20 miles to the ocean! Also, in the opposite direction, we have the Oregon Caves, in Cave Junction, and fun antiquing in the quaint town of Grants Pass, Oregon. The town of Brookings, Oregon is also a great place to visit: on the ocean, cute shops and fun restaurants.
  • This is a very cozy home. It’s in a great location for local hiking adventures.

  • If you are a fisherman, or here to see the Redwoods, this is a fantastic place to stay, especially if you enjoy river front living!

    Janice2019-09-19T00:00:00Z
  • Marian’s riverside rental is an absolute delight. It is perfectly peaceful, the house is comfy and cozy, and it is near fantastic redwood trails! As a host, Marian will not fail you. She checked in when we first got there. Marian was friendly, greeted us, and affirmed she was always there across the street. Not only that, but she stocks the cupboard really well. I cannot tell you how accommodated I felt when I opened the fridge to find a brand new, seemingly freshly bought carton of half and half. It’s a small item, but we forgot creamer for coffee and Marian anticipated our needs. If you’re going to the redwoods in crescent city (best place for them in my opinion) you are a fool if you don’t go to Marian first.

  • Absolutely loved it here! Super clean, super peaceful and perfectly placed on the river! Marian is a complete sweetheart!

    Barbie2019-06-21T00:00:00Z
  • The place is as described or better. Neat and clean and in the perfect place to take day trips and view the Redwoods and other areas such as the scenic Highway 30 through the Columbia Gorge area. Marion brought us over a map and recommended what to go see and some great places to eat seafood...the side on cod was less expensive than a side of fries in Crescent City something we don't see in Montana. The neighborhood is beautiful and the neighbors that we met were all nice. We walked our dogs along Bubba's walk each day and they were accepted by the locals too.

In addition to our little eco-cabins, we offer camping spots throughout our 160 acre property in Northern California's Six Rivers National Forest. Part of a remote, off-grid "village," including a few other cabins, chickens, dogs, frogs, cats, permaculture gardens and all kinds of cool, sustainable projects. Search Maitreya Mountain Village for a clearer picture of our sustainable living project.
You can set up your tent anywhere in the woods, anywhere in ewok village (which is below/before the tree house area), just not right next to someone else's cabin. There are plenty of flat spots in terraced areas, down at the river (Little Jones Creek) and on any wayward path into our woods. Ask around. You may not find Dan right away, but someone will point you in the right direction. It's kind of a "make yourself at home" and "figure it out yourself," casual arrangement. If you are looking for a unique experience in a beautiful natural area and would like to experience life in an off-grid, sustainable, permaculture-focused ecovillage and all that a wilderness area has to offer -- rough roads, dirt, mud, insects, messes, barking dogs, mosquitoes, bees, mice, early morning roosters, communal living, composting toilets, ongoing construction projects - then we invite you join us in our mountain village! Hot shower there, too. It is about 200 yds on average away from most of our cabins and camping spots •(Lack of) Phone / Internet: Some Verizon and US Cellular service is available, but AT&T and T-Mobile do not service our area.
  • I am super impressed with Dan's eco-village. It's in a beautiful area, and it's really quiet. A big plus for me is that there was NO WIFI NOR CELL SERVICE! I came here for 3 days to have a completely off-grid break, and that's exactly what I got! :-D The goats were super friendly and the hens had a surplus of fresh eggs which I enjoyed each morning I was here. Getting here was an adventure in and of itself. It was a lot of fun to ford the river in my truck on the way up! The eco-village is a great showcase of possibilities for sustainable living that is good for the planet, and good for human beings as well! Can't recommend it enough!

  • This was such a fun stay! Definitely an adventure, and it’s a true camping experience! Beautiful scenery, great people living on the property that are super kind and helpful. Follow Dan’s instructions for getting there exactly, they are spot on! Would love to come back, such a unique space and community they have developing here. Side note: extra bug spray is a good idea!

  • We thought Dan's place was just as described. While we didn't meet Dan, there were very friendly folk and good signage around for us to settle in nicely. The property is beautiful, and well worth the rugged drive. We camped on the property. It was the fault of my own assumption, but just to mention for anyone considering the place - we were not able to have our car next to where we camped. We packed light and there was a place up the hill to unload our things first but just wanted to mention for anyone else looking for a nice place to camp outside of the nearby campgrounds. There is a bit of uphill walking from where you can camp. While we didn't use the community spaces (kitchen/bathhouse) we did check them out and it was very beautiful and well constructed. Perhaps one day we'll be back to stay in some of the cabins on site.

  • Super cool remote place. We enjoyed this so much and would definitely come back when in the area again. If you’re looking for peace and tranquility then this is the spot. Absolutely beautiful

A comfortable two-story cabin deep in the Northern California Six Rivers National Forest. Part of a remote, off-grid "village," including a few other cabins, chickens, dogs, frogs, cats, permaculture gardens and all kinds of cool, sustainable projects. Search Maitreya Mountain Village for more specifics about our living project.
If you are looking for a unique experience in a beautiful natural area and would like to experience life in an off-grid, sustainable, permaculture-focused ecovillage and all that a wilderness area has to offer -- rough roads, dirt, mud, insects, messes, barking dogs, mosquitos, bees, mice, early morning roosters, communal living, composting toilets, ongoing construction projects - then we invite you join us in our mountain village! Amenities: •Lighting / Electricity: Your cabin does not have electricity; we try to keep a flashlight, lantern, and/or candle available for your use -- but we recommend that you bring your own lights. •Kitchen: The outdoor kitchen, near your cabin, has a small propane camping stove, and plenty of pots, pans, and utensils for your use.

  • Wow! What a unique & excellent spot! In addition to the cozy cabin, the beautiful property, and friendly farm-family, we had the opportunity to spend time with the newborn goat and take the other goaties for a walk in the woods. Dan was a very friendly and knowledgeable host. 10/10 would recommend!

  • The best AirBnb experience I have had! I absolutely love the place and people!

    Dustin2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed here as a get away, to unplug for a night and enjoy the serenity of the mountains. The views did not disappoint, the skies were clear and so we could see every star- absolutely breathtaking! We walked the short hike down Nicks trail- serenity trail, enjoying the babbling stream, and when we returned to the cabin, the wood burning stove was a must in the cold February weather ! Dan was pleasant and accommodating and we love love loved the animals! Happy the dog came to visit us in the evening and a sweet black cat came and sat in my lap by the fire for hours! My son enjoyed watching the chickens and goats too! As we were the only ones staying on the property we were allowed to look in all of the other cabins which was awesome! The witch’s hut was perfect for us as we were able to lay our 2 year old down for bed in the loft and my husband and I stayed up later by the fire downstairs. Things I would note if you’re skeptical: this is a rustic cabin- you will have no cell service, limited power, the toilet is shared between cabins and is composting (ie a bucket with sawdust), it is a working homestead/ community so there will be construction, gardening, general work going on but everyone was super friendly! lastly bring what you will need as there weren’t utensils or other items like that for us to use, I’d also recommend candles and headlamps! These were all things that we were expecting and looking forward to, I.e. and unplugged night alway from “the city”. We can’t wait to go back in the spring when the garden is flourishing and perhaps we can use the swimming hole!

  • Thanks for having us! We loved the Witches hut. It’s quiet, cozy and full of character. We took Dan’s advice and arrived before sunset. This really helped us get the lay of the land. Cheers!

    Will2020-02-06T00:00:00Z
  • Great jumping off point to explore the redwoods. We stayed in the witches hut - I like this one because it is closest to the communal kitchen and bathroom. It heats easily with a small wood stove and there is a pile of wood outside the cabin ready for splitting. The village is well organized and everything works - the showers were hot and the cooking facilities were great. Bring all your food with you as there is nowhere to buy groceries nearby. The water there is amazing. We found a helpful sheet in the communal kitchen describing an amazing trail through J Smith park to the Boy Scout tree - it is off an unmarked path on the way to fern falls - we would not have found it without Dan. If you aren’t afraid of driving on dirt roads, can cook and can make a fire and split wood than this is the place for you. Truly a unique experience.

  • Certainly not your typical airbnb, but a lovely experience for those looking for a bit of adventure and seclusion in the beauty of the landscape. The drive in and out was dicey for our small city car; we took it really slow and were relieved to make it out. The space was charming and we enjoyed meeting the other guests staying on site. Thanks, Dan for sharing in the fruits of your labor.

    Dana2019-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • I stayed in the witch's hut for two nights in mid December, I'll try to give a description of my experience. Dan has spent over a decade creating this village (it deserves the title) with the help of others in the spirit of Maitreya (friendship). The state of the village on the edge of 2020 was extraordinarily impressive. It is clear that an astounding amount of work was put into this community; all of the buildings (I saw the interior of most) are crafted with loving attention to detail and a playful creative spirit. As you stay in these building you will feel the incredible amount of care and effort that went into the construction of each one. Each building I visited was spectacular, but the Witch's hut in particular taught me that I had never before in my life known what it truly meant to be cozy. It was raining and so I rarely left the hut, but I didn't even mind, it was so comfortable to stay and work in. Thomas Jefferson would undoubtedly be proud of America if all he saw of the future was the agrarian village of Maitreya: a community of friends living and thinking as independently as possible. I personally used these two nights to write, and so found it perfect, but I warn that this place is not for everyone. If you want to be pampered, if you don't like losing access to internet, if you don't like animals, if you don't like losing modern amenities (there is a composting toilet, welcome to nature!), you should find some other establishment.

    Brian2019-12-12T00:00:00Z
  • Definitely a rustic experience, but 100% worth it if you're into that.

  • Amazing hospitality! My trip started out with getting lost and stuck but the people at the mountain village took great care of me. Dan even pulled my car out of the mud for me with his truck. The village is serene, well-kept and welcoming. An ideal location to reconnect with natural and slow your pace of life. Just a precaution from someone who had serious trouble finding the location. Make sure you have good traction tires, arrive during daylight, and follow the instructions carefully on how to get there. Here are my super simplified instructions once you turn on Little Jones Creek Road off Hwy 199: 1. Follow Little Jones Creek road a couple miles until you reach a fork. 2. TURN RIGHT AT THE FORK onto the DIRT ROAD with the sign saying 17N08 3. Drive a couple miles until you see the SMILEY FACE SIGN on a tree and a traffic cone. TURN RIGHT. 4. Keep going and you can't miss it. And like it says in the directions definitely do not follow your phone's directions. You will end up in a scary place further up 17N05 with signs like "Beware of Owner" with a gun pointing at you.

Make sure you read the posting description adequately and you will be prepared for arrival just fine. • Maitreya Mountain Village is an incredibly beautiful off the grid place. We loved our 3 nights in the tree house. Even though the weather was a bit nippy, we were warm and cozy due to plenty of covers. Being able to breath in the fresh mountain air, gaze at the stars and moon, listen to the babbling brook, and watch the mist rise from the valley floor was magical. And we loved being able to participate in some of the life of the village. Seeing the milking, feeding, and care of the goats, as well as the making of cheese was especially cool. Loved also drinking the pristine water, the conversations with the volunteers, and hearing about their world experiences. The common space with kitchen facilities and wood stove was great for after dark. We appreciated that the road in was good and not at all a problem for my Pontiac Vibe. We hope to return soon.

The Cabin on Cook Creek is located in the Six Rivers National Forest Area making it a perfect location to shelter in place. It is private, clean and cozy, and unique. It offers the sweet beauty of a year-around bubbling creek that runs through the property. You can open the bedroom windows on warm nights and fall asleep to the sound of the cascading waters. We hope you find it a relaxing and comfortable get-away where you can make yourself at home.
The cabin is approximately 1,100 sq. ft. It will sleep 6 guests comfortably with a full size bed in one bedroom and a queen bed and a futon that opens to a small double bed in the second bedroom. The living room provides a great space to relax with a sectional sofa and a reclining love seat, a 50” flat screen TV with Amazon FireTV stick with Alexa remote. There is also a second TV in a bedroom that has a ROKU for programming. In addition, a variety of books and games are also provided for your enjoyment. The kitchen is fully equipped, minus a dishwasher, with complimentary coffee, tea and hot chocolate. You also have access to covered parking in 2-car carport. You can enjoy the outdoors on a large deck in the back of the cabin with a BBQ (you will need to provide the charcoal), building fire in a fire pit, hanging out alongside the beautiful creek or exploring the property, which backs up to property belonging to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Dogs (no cats please) are generally welcome if not left unattended inside the cabin, please let me know dog's age, breed and size. The property is not fenced and a $20 pet cleaning fee is required.
The cabin is well situated close to scenic Highway 199, 16 miles northeast of Crescent City coast and 4.5 miles southwest of the center of Gasquet. Gasquet is a small town often referred to as “Sunny Gasquet” where Crescent City locals often go to escape the coastal fog. It is a scenic location near the old growth redwood forest with many trails and the Smith River, which is the heart of the Smith River National Recreational Area where you can explore over 3,000 acres, with opportunities for swimming, fishing, white water rafting and kayaking. It is a free flowing river - without a dam along its entire length - is especially prized among conservationists and is considered one of the Crown Jewels of the National Wild and Scenic River programs. The river is most known for its runs of Chinook salmon, coastal cutthroat trout, steelhead and coho salmon, but is also home to sculpin, green sturgeon, white sturgeon, brook lamprey, Pacific lamprey, American shad and chum salmon. The Smith has been a popular destination for sportsmen and women for many generations. It is one of the cleanest rivers in the world. The Mary Peacock Bridge that overlooks the Smith River and provides a view of the outlet from Cook Creek is about a 5 minute walk from the cabin. It is just 7 miles from the entrance to the Jedediah Smith State Park and only 5 miles from the Highway 199 entrance to the scenic Memorial Stout Grove, which is arguably the most scenic grove in the park. There is much to see and do in the area, so be sure to stop by the Hiouchi Visitor Center during your stay!

Fern Hook Vacation Cabins are located nearby Jedidiah Smith State Park in the tiny hamlet of Hiouchi, California. Indulge yourself in a private setting of magnificent redwoods carpeted with ferns. Our newly constructed cabins with full kitchens will provide deluxe accommodations while you enjoy this natural wonderland. We are pet friendly, but require a 20$ per pet fee, for each reservation.
Fern Hook Cabins were designed and built to blend into the forested landscape they inhabit. They are hand built utilizing, sustainably harvested redwood, sourced from a small local mill. Some of the wood was harvested on site, from salvaged trees. The cabins were designed to have a minimal impact on the environment, with energy conservation being a primary focus. Each cabin is tucked into its own grove of trees, providing a feeling of privacy, while still retaining easy access. The cabins are still close enough to each other to accommodate large families and groups, that may need to rent multiple cabins. At Fern Hook we strive to clean, tasteful accommodations in the heart of the redwoods.
We are located across the street from Redwood State and National Parks. The entrance to Jedidiah Smith Park, and the national parks visitor center are less than 3 miles down the road. With the Wild and Scenic Smith river less than an eighth of a mile away, swimming and fishing access is abundant. There is also full size, 9 hole , golf course next door with a bar and restaurant. We have a centralized location, that provides easy access to the abundant outdoor activities that surround us.
  • Very cozy and warm cabin with everything you need. I love the location because I saw a family of deer and a banana slug in a tree. The road nearby isn't that busy so it's very peaceful. I enjoyed the amenities and will be back for sure!

  • 900 Fernhook is a fantastic little cottage nestled in a redwood grove. You can see the incredible forest from every window. My daughter had a fantastic stay in the cottage over the weekend. The cottage is very close to Jed Smith Redwood Forest where amazing trail heads are close by. Crescent City is close to the cottage as well in case you want to go out for a good meal. I recommend the Chart Room on the wharf where harbor seals sun on a deck nearby. We had a great time in this cozy, beautiful cottage. Nancy

A decahexagon (16 sided) open floor plan, earth sheltered, living roof, post and beam, log-and-tile off-grid mansion way out in the woods with spring-fed water and with many "unfinished" details. Surrounded by wilderness. Great for self-reliant, experienced adventurers and especially larger groups (we've had 16 people inhabit he Lodge). • What a beautiful and unique place! My kids and I enjoyed getting away from the frenzy of life. Dan’s village is perfect for slowing down, enjoying nature and each other’s company. We had plenty of space in the lodge and especially liked the green roof! There was lots of exploring to do, and a cozy evening by the fire in the beautiful mosaic-floored “gathering put”. We’ll be back for sure!

  • Gorgeous, quiet place!

    Miguel2018-07-02T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great experience, it was a nice secluded spot that gave a real unplugged feeling that was just what we needed. It is a bit of a drive to reach, but overall it was great.

    Brett2018-04-07T00:00:00Z
  • I'm glad Dan lowered the bar with his humble disclaimer because it made the surprise just that much more fantastic. I LOVED this place. I really hope to make it up there again. The setting could not be more beautiful. The structure was so unique and inspiring. I'm convinced that a week up there would cure me of myself. Here are just a few tips to make your stay more enjoyable: 1) Your glamping. Don't rely on outlets for coffee grinders, laptops etc... I didn't see any. 2) Bring bottled water. I couldn't really figure out the potable water situation. 3) Dress for the weather (like you're camping). We were there in winter. There's a wonderful wood burning stove, but it was still very cold, especially at night. Just think ahead. If you're a rugged soul, this place will blow your mind. It did mine.

    Hiromi2018-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • Where and how to start... we had a very unique experience that I doubt others will replicate. It had snowed quite heavily the night we arrived & fallen trees stopped us driving in; so we hiked 4 miles up a mountain in the snow, the lodge was stunning and if we had been there longer than a night we would have been able to fully appreciate it, but the next day we had to make our way out; thankfully being driven back to our abandoned car. Several fallen trees needed to be removed on the route, which added to the adventure. It was a very memorable experience and our hosts were great. Just be sure to book when you won’t be snowed in, or out for that matter!

  • Second time back and it’s always way too hard to leave! Highly recommend it!

    Nolynn2018-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay was very interesting! We were warned about the hike up to the lodge and I took it lightly which was a mistake haha we hiked our cooler 1/3 of a mile up a steep hill! All that aside the lodge was very rustic and unique. Keep an open mind. It is really cool Dan built that! Dan was a very friendly person and gave us some very helpful tips on where to visit and the places he mentioned were beautiful! I would love to come back some day and stay in the tree house

    Rachael2017-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • My second time staying here and strongly recommend to those heading out in Jedediah Smith State Park. Dan (and Co.) has (have) done a phenomenal job in putting it together. Supporting their permaculture mission is in and of itself worthwhile, but the beautiful scenery and well constructed village make it all the more so. Thank you for letting us share this experience!

Thank you for your interest in "Duffy Court". Our home is 3 bdrm 2ba with a King bed in the master, Queen and Twin Trundle in the other 2 bdrms. It is equipped with Stainless appliances, large Washer/Dryer, a 60" TV w/internet/wifi. Just off hwy 199 in a very private "Forest" location with a huge 1 acre fenced yard full of fruit trees and blackberry bushes. It is the only home on the street, huge parking access, a short walk to the gorgeous Smith River and easy drive to the Redwood Forests.
Secluded yet convenient location in the quaint town of Gasquet. It has its own water well with fantastic fresh water. The home is decorated in American Indian style as my father was a full Apache from the White Mountains of Arizona. It is a very well equipped home on a 1 acre parcel in the middle of the forest, huge pine, oak and maple trees on the property, many fruit trees and berry bushes. Sleeps 7 with 2 queens, day bed and trundle, couch. There is ample parking for large vehicles and RV's with a long driveway leading to our cul de sac location. The property has front and rear storm doors that have built in screens for air flow in the summer months. The property has Ring security cams for the front and rear yards. Gasquet is a remote "small town" location and shuts down early in the evening. If you will be arriving late and will be hungry, please plan in advance for food and drinks for your family.
The town of Gasquet is quiet, everything shuts down around 7pm. There is a Market and Post Office 1/4 mile away. She She's is a 50's style diner across the street.
  • Conveniently located place for excursions in the redwoods, literally on the brink of the forest, with big backyard, and gorgeous Smith River just across the street. Place itself well kept, with all the necessary amenities, we (family of four) had more than enough space there . Robert (host) is responsive and accommodating.

  • The location was beautiful and the home was clean and spacious.

    Kayleen2019-07-26T00:00:00Z
  • This place was outstanding. We thoroughly enjoyed our time. It was the perfect base to explore the Redwoods and surrounding area. We loved being in such a secluded area to unwind and relax. Bob was very responsive and gave outstanding recommendations of things to do in the local area. We highly recommend this home if you are looking for a great place to explore the Redwoods and surrounding area.

  • Great base for exploring Jebediah Smith Redwoods State Park. We felt very welcome in this comfortable and interesting home. We especially enjoyed the outdoor fire and view of the setting sun on the mountains.

    Emily2019-07-03T00:00:00Z
  • Better than the photos! Super clean and cozy. Robert is a wonderful host who does an awesome job providing you with local information and directions. The fruit trees and black berries were still green or not yet bearing fruit, but there will be tons of fruit once the time is right. My children loved walking to the local swimming hole and jumping off the rocks. The locals were super friendly and welcoming. We also enjoyed the beauty of Stout Grove which was about 20 minutes away and recommended by Robert. If you head into Crescent City, bring jackets. The weather is quite cooler and windy compared to the warmth of Gasquet. One tip is to shower before using the washing machine or washing a lot of dishes. The first night the water pressure was really low until we learned about this. We loved our stay and wished we could have stayed longer.

  • Amazing. Everything was perfect. Will definitely be back!! And plan to stay longer. Didn’t want to leave!!

  • Great, comfy place to just be and enjoy the woods around you, very much a cabin. Great cast iron pans, a warm wood burning stone, and beautifully detailed one of a kind quilts layering on all the beds. Very nice stay at this cabin, right on the water, not entirely accessible directly from home but I also stayed in winter, might be different in summer. Thoughtful homey details that you forget you’d need, really feels like it’s your home while you’re there. I love the Smith River and am thankful to find such a comfy place resting directly above a cherished spot.

    Morgen2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • Awesome cabin, secluded and right on the river! Cool decor throughout, gets cold at night but indoor fireplace and heaters warm it right up. We will be back!

The Cabin is clean, cozy and very private. It's surrounded by woods and has a very large wrap around deck. The Cabin will accommodate up to six people. The living room offers a queen size sleeper sofa. It has a 46" flat screen TV with a DVD/VHS player, Dish TV with Sirius radio and Satellite Wi-Fi is provided. There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms. A full size kitchen and a cozy wood stove... we supply the wood! Dogs are considered. There is an additional $20 pet cleaning fee.
Surrounded by the beauty of California's northern forests, and the sounds of Smith River echoing through the landscape (during winter) this cabin is the perfect getaway to nature and seclusion. Inside is a smoke free environment and pets are considered. The Cabin is approximately 864 sq. ft. and will accommodate up to six guests on almost an acre of land, with a pond, and completely fenced for your privacy. Offering two bedrooms, one with a king-sized bed and a 39" flat screen TV, and the other with a twin-over-queen bunk bed set (top bed has a 150 pound weight limit). The living room also boasts a queen-sized sleeper sofa, and there are additionally two bathrooms. The living room is a great spot in which to unwind, with a large flat-screen television with DVD/VHS player, Satellite internet, and comfy seating. A range of books, games, DVDs/VHS and Sirius radio are provided for entertainment. A fully-equipped kitchen (no dishwasher) allows guests to self-cater in style, with complimentary gourmet coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Outside, a spacious wrap-around deck is the perfect place to gaze over the forests full of local flora, with an outdoor grill for alfresco dining and cooking. The host provides many pantry items such as cooking oil and spices. Air conditioning and heating are featured throughout the cabin, which, along with a wood-burning stove, will keep things cozy in every season. And we supply the wood! A private washing machine and dryer will make even longer stays comfortable, and guests will also have access to a two car garage. All linens and towels are provided by the host, as well as shampoo, body wash and laundry detergent. The Cabin is in a remote area so cell phone reception is variable depending on your service provider and phone. There is a land-line and WiFi is also provided. There are many times when it's foggy at the coast but it's sunny at The Cabin! It's just a 10 minute walk or 2 minute drive to the pristine Smith River. It’s the largest free-flowing (no dams) river in the state, producing the largest Steelhead and Chinook salmon. Dogs are considered, please tell me how many, how old and how large/small. No cats please. There is an additional $20 pet cleaning fee. From The Cabin it’s just 11 miles on scenic Hwy 199 to Redwood National Park and Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park. Some of the tallest trees in the world reside here and there are many trails to explore. Drive or bike through Redwood National Park on unpaved Howland Hill Rd. There are massive Redwood trees! Like the ocean? We’re only 22 miles away as you drive through the Redwoods and Crescent City. In Crescent City there is Battery Point Lighthouse. In fact, there are many lighthouses along the coast. There is a great view from these lighthouses to do some whale watching. Gray whales migrate from December through May. You may also see Orcas and Humpback whales. Northern California and Oregon have some of the most beautiful coastlines. Yet, on those foggy coastal days, Gasquet is usually in the sunshine. Great Fishing -- Along with Steelhead and Chinook, the Smith also has runs of Silver salmon, Coho and sea-run cutthroat trout. The Chinook runs start in late August, going through late December, with its peak in November. Steelhead starts their runs in early December and goes through March, with their peak in January. The Smith River flows through some of the most beautiful scenery in California. From Six Rivers National Forest through Jedediah State Park, people say that it’s hard to decide which is better, the scenery or the fishing.
  • Great cozy cabin surrounded by dense forest! We used it as a home base to go hiking in the Jedediah Smith park; it was a warm, comfortable respite to come home to. There were plenty of supplies to cook a full meal every night. The wood burning stove was our favorite part of the cabin!

  • There are a lot of options to stay in the Redwoods Forest and we’re so glad we picked this cabin by the Smith River. The location and river views were so beautiful and more than we could have expected. Diane’s cabin was perfect, homey, cozy, and warm. The stove fireplace came in very handy. Thank you Diane for being so responsive and accommodating and a perfect host.

    Mona2020-01-17T00:00:00Z
  • Our family had great time, while staying at Diane's place. As the cabin is located in the middle of mountain area, during the stay, it reminisced my summer camping during the youth. I gave max score, as I had very meaningful experience here. However, If I give some additional comment for the improvement. If the cabin provides better internet speed, it couldn't be any better. Download speed: 0.31 Mbps / Upload speed: 0.7 Mbps. However, it gave us better chance to read more books and play more games.

    Mooyoung2019-12-31T00:00:00Z

The Trapper’s Cabin is a 2 bedroom 1 bath cabin located in the heart of Gasquet, CA, conveniently situated off the 199 highway. Gasquet is 20 miles from the ocean, 10 miles from the Redwood National Forest, and sits directly on the Smith River. Come for the many adventures that the tallest trees, cleanest river, and secluded beaches have to offer, but stay for a sense of pure serenity.
There is a queen sized mattress in each of the two bedrooms, as well as two cot-sized day beds in the living room, in case you need to sleep six. There is also a full kitchen and small laundry room. The backyard is secure and well suited for pets or small children. The cabin is located in a residential neighborhood and after a walk down the road, you will find that Gasquet has some of the most friendly neighbors around.
The cabin is just a short walk to the river. There is a fish cleaning station and grill in the backyard for anyone who is lucky enough to catch a prize winning steelhead or salmon. The immediate neighborhood is perfect for bike rides, hiking, kayaking, fishing, swimming, mushroom hunting, berry picking, bigfoot hunting, bird watching, quartz or gold mining, and stargazing. There is also an amazing massage therapist within walking distance, in case your adventures have left you feeling a bit sore. At the Trapper’s Cabin, you will have a spectacular view of the Adam’s Station, a local landmark. The view will take you back to the 1800’s, when Mary Adams Peacock entertained the many travelers who stopped at her B&B for a warm meal and comfortable bed. Yet, the cabin itself, has all the comforts and amenities of home. It has been designed for the explorer who still likes to come home to a memory foam mattress and smart TV.
  • Bridget’s place is amazing. It is in such a great location- along the Smith River very close to Jedediah State Park and very close to Crescent City. It was very clean, the bed was super comfortable and the AC/heat worked extremely well. The backyard is fenced off, which was perfect for our dogs. Bridget even had dog beds, towels for them if needed and treats! Thank you for making our stay so comfortable, Bridget!

It's an upstairs suite with plenty of unique and luxurious amenities, such as a jacuzzi under a skylight and a little all cedar sauna. Set in rural residential with few and quiet neighbors. The best part may be the grand redwoods outside, and an easy but moderately steep trail that leads to a nice gravel bar for fishing (winter), swimming (summer) or peaceful walking along the amazing, clear Smith River. MUST LIKE DOGS. We have too many, all friendly, and not in your space (unless you want).
There is no kitchen available, but the room has a fridge and microwave and dishes so you can bring your own food. There is a good restaurant (that is sometimes open) and market 1/4 mile down the road in Hiouchi, or It's 12 miles to Crescent City with more restaurants and shops. There is a very nice queen bed, and we can set up a nice futon foldout and a thick sleeping pad for sleeping up to 4 at $20 per person beyond 2. Water is good here! no need to buy plastic bottled water. It's a separate space where dogs and our family are downstairs.
You will be in a natural wonderland. The redwood forest giants are right down the road in state and national parks (1/2 mile), the cleanest river in the west is right out the back door, and the diverse, unpopulated, incredibly scenic coast is 20 minutes away. Or maybe you prefer hiking, biking, or exploring in the mountains of the national forest all around. What this area lacks is crowds, shopping malls, and traffic.
  • Great room, cute house right on the river. Can’t beat it! Appreciate the amazing hospitality, especially as we had our Labrador with us. Will certainly stay again if and when we’re headed to the coast. Thanks again!

  • For travelers wanting to visit the redwoods, this is an incredible spot. About 3 min driving from the Jed campground, and about 8 min driving from Howland Hill Rd in the park. The space itself is very cozy - because we visited in the winter, we loved the fireplace and the sauna (which works perfectly). Extra bonus for dog-lovers are the six dogs living on the property which are very sweet.

  • This was our first Airbnb. What a great experience. Excellent host. Incredible location. Accommodations were perfect for us. Having a personal sauna and whirlpool bath was wonderful. Dogs were not a problem whatsoever, but added to the enjoyment and security. We hope to make it back and stay longer. Michael & Michele

  • Make sure your maps function is working on your phone, the road to get to the house isn't marked with a street sign. Everyone, including the dogs were very friendly and privacy was given. We felt very welcome, the place was clean and the bed super comfy. The walk down to the river was gorgeous and a great place to swim. This house was located near many attractions and parks which made it very convenient. We would stay here again.

At Fern Hook we strive to clean, tasteful accommodations in the heart of the redwood forests.

  • Great stay with all the amenities we needed. Loved the location and the use of tennis courts. Thank you!

  • Lovely cabin in a great setting, close to Jedediah Smith State Park. Some noise from nearby Highway 199, but not too bothersome. Kitchen equipment is adequate but plan to bring all food and any special equipment needed. Really enjoyed our time here.

    Laura2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • Roy and Sharons place is awesome! It’s a treat fo find a nice place with a tennis court by the river in the middle of the redwood forest! Buoyed playing a set with the owner as well! We hope to be back soon!

  • Wow! This place is fantastic. The house is large and comfortable, with everything you’d ever need. The large jetted tub in the bathroom and the king sized bed add a touch of luxury. However, the outdoor space is really the best part of this property. The tennis court is beautiful, the giant yard includes fruit trees, a playground, beach access, and large decks. We loved coming “home” each day to relax after our adventures. Highly recommend!

All new furnishings and kitchen is fully furnished as well, we also include those basic but necessary details, ie dish soap, shampoo & soap, full size washer & dryer, bath and beach towels, water toys, etc. Also included are a few conveniences, bedside light with 4 usb charging ports, charging station near the kitchen - of course you will need that to stay connected! We have traveled as well and recognize what has been lacking for us and hope to provide for our guests! If we've missed something critical please let us know and we will do our best to provide!! Please remember NO smoking inside Villa.
Neighborhood is a laid back river community, walking distance to a small local restaurant and grocery store that is well equipped - with an excellent wine selection!
  • We had a great weekend here. The house was amazingly clean and close to the park.

  • Such a fun and relaxing stay! Will definitely be staying at Harry & Stella's place again!

  • What a fantastic gem located in the heart of the National Redwood Forest. Lovely home base for traveling to all the majesty that awaits you on your big adventure. It was wonderful to come home to a cozy, comfortable, and stylish location after a long day of hiking the forest or ocean. Upon returning home, the first thing we did each night was light-up the fire pit and stargaze. The night sky is thick with stars. We saw nine shooting starts and the International Space Station fly overhead. We will stay here again upon our return to this magical area; it had every amenity required for a comfortable stay. Harry and Stella are attentive hosts that are there when you need them, and out of sight when you don’t, we highly recommended The Villa Au Contraire. Thank you, Harry and Stella, for creating such a perfect forest retreat!

  • Couldn’t be in a better location. They did a great job on the remodel. Super cute. Beds and pillows were very comfy. Quiet neighborhood. Loved the fire pit in the backyard.

  • Clean and nice backyard

    George2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Very nice place! There’s so much you can do in just walking distance or a very short drive! They welcomed our pets which meant a lot to us! We were able to just walk down to the river and Jeddiah state park to do some hiking. Wal mart is only about 15 minutes away along with the crescent beach and some local restaurants/fast food. Very quick on responses when we asked for directions or tips. Highly recommended.

    Courtney2019-09-13T00:00:00Z
  • What a gem! Want an amazing location that has you surrounded by Redwood trees, yet also a quick hop to the beach! This is the place! We enjoyed the hot tub after a day of hiking, and grilled burgers one night! Took kayaks to the beach! We will definitely be coming back!!!

    Stephanie2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • What a sweet spot! The house was lovely, nicely laid out, very new, very clean and the beds were AMAZINGLY comfy. The kitchen was well stocked and the towels and sheets were great quality. It was a great spot to enjoy the redwoods - a quick drive to most places and just a few minutes walk to a great swimming hole on the Smith River. We loved the deck and the declining chairs. Our kids loved the big screen TV. We appreciated the hot tub, bikes and water toys (even though we didn’t use them, we were busy riding our bikes!). We also really liked having a garage to store our bikes. As my husband said - “it was perfect. Can’t think of a thing to make it better.” We would absolutely stay again and hope we are able to. Thanks Harry and Stella!

Our home is a well lit, cheery, comfortable home located on the beautiful Smith River and nestled in the Redwood Forest.
We have made our home welcoming and comfortable yet tastefully decorated. The views and sounds of the Smith River make our home a tranquil and peaceful retreat.
Our neighborhood is a quiet, residential area along the river. Our property is a one acre lot with lots of room to run around and play in the yard. Our home sits far away from the main road so if you love peace and quiet, you will love this.
  • This place is fantastic. Extremely clean, very spacious with a lot of excellent little but thoughtful touches which made our stay even more memorable. The view and proximity to the river makes this place unique. The kitchen and common area is well equipped to cook and have nice dinner table with families and friends. Definitely recommend this place for families or people seeking a relaxing time near Redwood National Park. Thank you Erin.

    Mohamad2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • The detached bedroom gets a little chilly but there is a space heater. The river is beautiful and the access to the state park is super close. Really greta location! The house is cozy and comfortable, two fireplaces are a bonus.

    Stephanie2019-11-30T00:00:00Z
  • Spacious and stocked with every amenity you could need! Plenty of space for our two families to relax together and enjoy a Redwoods getaway for our wedding weekend. The house was clean, well stocked and beautiful. The river view and outdoor space was perfect too. We would choose to stay here again in the future without a doubt! Thanks Erin!

    Jessica2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • Erin has created a wonderful space for relaxation and creating family memories. Our favorite activity was relaxing in chairs overlooking the river in the morning and evening. It was great fun seeing the river otter and Osprey, and stars in the evening. She has thoughtfully provided all the extra amenities you need, from beach towels to games, and the kitchen food prep basics. Furniture, beds and bedding are all very comfy! Great place to spend time! PS. If you are lucky enough, as we were, to be there in blackberry picking season, Black berry pancakes, or heated blackberries over vanilla ice cream can’t be beat!

    Suzanne2019-09-03T00:00:00Z
  • It’s an older home, but well taken care of and a great space for multiple couples or a multi-generational family. Nice outdoor spaces, but the river access is a little more difficult than you might imagine based on the posted photos. Good proximity to the Jedediah Smith state park. We loved our mid-August stay.

    David2019-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • An amazing location with easy access to trails, beaches, and river, and more! It was the perfect setting and house layout for our first family reunion with seating for everyone. Easy communication with the host Erin and a pleasant stay.

    Carisa2019-08-16T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful home, breathtaking view. We loved the river in the back and my teenagers loved the garage converted to a room. I highly recommend!

    Ashlee2019-07-15T00:00:00Z
  • Spent a lovely holiday weekend at Erin’s place outside of Crescent City. The accommodations were as advertised (good beds), very clean, and with lots of nice bonuses like a big gas grill, and plenty of outdoor tables and chairs with a beautiful view of the river. Very comfortable common areas to hang out inside as well. Location is good; about 20 mins to heart of Crescent City and very close to Jedidiah Smith Redwoods hiking. Very quiet and peaceful in the evenings, which we loved. Our only regret was not having enough time to spend a day floating the Smith River (we spent two days hiking in Redwoods) We will definitely return! One very minor nit: shower water pressure is not great. It didn’t bother us since no one was in a hurray to get showers.

  • This home has everything for the group experience! Everyone in our group loved their rooms, the plentiful bathrooms, the view of the Smith River and the Redwoods, and the beautiful landscaping! The home has all of the thoughtful amenities you could need for an inspiring weekend retreat. We spent the entire weekend enjoying the dreamiest kitchen ever, and workshopping in the living room with occasional group actives in the yard. We topped off the weekend with a campfire enjoying the stars. Amazing trails so close to the house allowed for a great group adventure. Truly a gem! We hope to return!

  • Very happy with the rental and would stay again. The house is accurately pictured and was great for our group of 12. The dining room table is big enough for everyone which made for a great place to gather. There isn't an easy way to the river which is a shame (but it wasn't claimed there was either so that isn't a criticism). The master bedroom is so many degrees nicer than the other bedrooms that I felt a little guilty having claimed it! Wifi and phone signals were good.

  • We were so thrilled to stay at your place! What a beautiful setting and an amazing home. So much room for a large family and everyone had their own space to sit comfortablly, to eat, and to sleep, it was perfect! We loved all the family room space and all the dining space. The kitchen was so well stocked we had everything we could have possibly needed. We appreciated all the extra towels and sheets and blankets too! The outdoor space was just perfect all around, The grill was wonderful, we appreciated the washer and dryer.... Games and entertainment and local tips.....All the beds were super comfy, and all the extra touches made us feel so welcome.

  • I traveled with my family to see the Redwoods and our stay couldn’t have been better! Our group of ten adults struggles to find comfortable and affordable accommodations so we were beyond thrilled to stay at Chris and Lisa’s beautiful river home. We traveled during the holidays and the kitchen is fully stocked enough that we were able to prepare and enjoy a full Thanksgiving meal together! Our hosts were kind, easy to communicate with, and generous. They brought fancy milk and eggs during our stay! We are so grateful and glad to have enjoyed such a wonderful home for our Redwood adventures!

    Sabryna2019-12-05T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fabulous stay at this beautiful home on the river. Right from the start, the owners were very responsive and easy to work with. They met and welcomed us upon arrival and made sure we knew that they were always available should we need anything at all. The house is awesome. Very well stocked, clean, spacious, a great value and a fantastic location overlooking the river. We do a family reunion every year and it was the perfect spot. We so enjoyed the river, the beach and the beautiful redwoods. We even brought our dogs who loved it too. I highly recommend this home and these owners to anyone looking to spend some time in the area. Kudos to you Lisa & Chris for being such awesome hosts and providing such a beautiful home for us to enjoy!!

    Ruiz2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • The surrounding views (and sounds from the water) are amazing! The kitchen is very well equipped; we cooked all meals there and didn't really need to go out. We had six teenagers in our party (3 families) and all of them loved the house. Be careful about a step between the entry and the living room (I wasn't and hurt my left foot while in a hurry. )

    Phuong-Ha2019-08-10T00:00:00Z
  • This property was fabulous!! Our family enjoyed the river, swimming holes nearby, hiking through the Redwoods, and going into town for dinner and walks on the beach!! The house was clean and had all the necessities! The hosts were very courteous and easy to contact. They had a binder full of information at the house too, which made it easy to find things to do!

    Alana2019-08-05T00:00:00Z

At Fern Hook we strive to clean, tasteful accommodations in the heart of the redwood forests.
  • Great space really close to the redwoods. It was very cozy and everything was easy to find. James was a great host and I’d recommend this place to anyone who wants to stay near the redwoods!

  • Awesome spot in a beautiful setting.

  • The Fern Hook Cabins were wonderful! My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our stay, and it had everything that we needed. The cabin is a mix of having updated amenities, but you still get the rustic feel of a cabin. We loved that it was surrounded by Redwoods, and it was close to the state parks as well as the town area. We will definitely be booking this place again in the future!

A small, rustic, handbuilt cabin deep in Northern California's Six Rivers National Forest. Part of a remote, off-grid "village," including a few other cabins, chickens, dogs, frogs, cats, permaculture gardens and all kinds of cool, sustainable projects. Search Maitreya Mountain Village for a clearer picture of our sustainable living project.
A unique experience in a beautiful natural area, in an off-grid, sustainable, permaculture-focused ecovillage, nestled deep in the heart of Six Rivers National Forest. The hand-built Half-Moon Cabin is the more spacious of the two small cabins, with extra storage space and a comfy leather sofa section, a lofted lofted double bed and woodstove heat, as well as extra privacy down forested Village Creek Road. If you are visiting during the colder months, you'll love getting cozy in the Half Moon with the woodstove and extra hangout space for reading, playing games, or cuddling. We have wood available for sale at $5/bundle. •Kitchen: The outdoor kitchen, near your cabin, has a small propane camping stove, and plenty of pots, pans, and utensils for your use.
  • WHAT A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE! Got in late despite knowing it would be a rough drive in but everything went fairly smooth! The half Moon was adorable and we loved having the little wood burning stove. One of the dogs, Happy, greated us and we convinced him to sleep in our cabin! We had cats, goats, and dogs to pet in the morning which was a HUGE plus! People working at the village helped us to fresh eggs and more! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and can't wait to return!

    Stacey2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • A great place to stay and spend some time with yourself or loved ones without any internet or electricity. The hosts are super friendly and so are all the farm animals. My favorite part of the stay was getting to know everyone on the property and the visitors at the community center. This is a great concept and hope this place grows into as envisioned.

    Samrudh2019-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful unique experience in the mountains. Perfect for an off the grid quiet peaceful place but it is also close enough to the coast and the redwoods for some exploring. It gets much warmer in the summer than I expected.. my only suggestion to guests would be to bring a small battery operated fan to help circulate the air at night but other than that really spectacular!

    Chelsey2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Off the beaten path. The cabin was as expected with a comfy bed and everyone living/visiting was nice. Loved the drive up the narrow rough road into the forest and mountain!

    Kira2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely beautiful mountain retreat! Everyone at MMV was welcoming and friendly, and extremely accommodating. Enjoyed meeting residents and fellow visitors alike! Was great to get off-grid for a few days and explore the beauty of Northern California. Would highly recommend for anyone looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of regular life, and just switch off for a few days. As a seasoned camper, an additional bonus was having a hot shower in the morning. Personally wasn’t expecting to have this available, so was a really lovely surprise!

    Caitlin2019-07-11T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay with an excellent location for being isolated and getting away from the busy world.

    Alexis2019-06-30T00:00:00Z
  • The half moon cabin is small and cozy. The bed is comfy, if soft. Read the hosts’s description of the property carefully; it’s accurate. If you’re looking for an unusual off-grid experience with goats, chickens, dogs, and a composting toilet, then you’ll like this place as much as I did. Don’t worry about the drive in, it’s a somewhat bumpy forest service road but my Hyundai had no problem at all (this might be different in other seasons). Very glad I took my 13 year old daughter here. So much more interesting than a hotel.
