Historically Gilleleje is an old fishing village and it was here that many Jews were transported to Sweden during World War II. Gilleleje Church was a waiting place for Jews until they could be transported. In 1943, 75 Jews were caught by the Gestapo on the church ceiling after a snitch had informed the Germans. Everywhere there are monuments of historical events. Every year there are various festivals in Gilleleje - "Hill" Festival, Harbour Festival, Jazz at the port and The Herring Day. A warm welcome to pleasant Ekeby, a small town located in northwestern Skåne. Around 3,500 people of mixed ages live here, mainly in villas but also in some apartments and farms. The village includes a grocery store with a wide assortment, a kiosk with a street kitchen and a pizzeria. One of Sweden's largest privately owned furniture stores is also located here, with a restaurant serving lunch, sandwiches and cakes.
