Exotic beach vacations in Fiji

Close your eyes and picture paradise. Does your vision involve white sands, swaying palm trees and the gentle sound of waves breaking on the shore? If the answer is yes, then Fiji is the place for you. Located in the South Pacific - some 1,300 miles from New Zealand’s North Island and 3,000 miles from Hawaii, Fiji may be just a dot on the map, but zoom in and you’ll find the island nation is made up of over 300 tropical volcanic islands, of which 110 are inhabited. The two main islands - Viti Levu and Vanua Levu account for 87% of the population between them, and 90% of the nation’s roads.

Given its remote location, the only real way to get here is by plane - you can fly direct from Australian cities Brisbane or Sydney in 4 hours, direct from Hawaii in 5 hours or direct from the West Coast of the U.S. (L.A. or San Francisco) in 10 hours.

The climate is tropical and stays constant almost all year round with hot, humid sunny days and temperatures in the 80s. The rainy season runs from November to April, which normally takes the form of brief heavy downpours over all-out rain.

Cruise the islands

A great way to get a feel for this island nation is to take to the water. A sailing trip around the coastline of the islands on a tall ship will take you back in time to the halcyon days of ocean exploration, or feel the wind in your hair with a catamaran cruise. Boat tours leave from the main tourist islands every day, including Taveuni. Visitors often see pods of dolphins or groups of manta rays swimming alongside the boat so keep an eye out. Your Luxury Retreats concierge can organize boat tours for you.

Snorkeling and diving

After a day on the high seas why not plan to see Fiji from another unique angle - under the water. The pristine waters around the islands host the largest coral reef system in the South Pacific - which spans almost 4,000 sq miles - and is a paradise for scuba divers and snorkelers alike. The region is known as the soft coral capital of the world, and you will be sure to see many different species of bright coral, especially off the coast of Taveuni and the Koro sea where nutrient-rich waters are perfect for marine life. And it’s not just coral, hundreds of species of tropical fish can be found here too, as well as rays, sea turtles and even hammerhead and reef sharks.

Golfing in Fiji

You might not think of the golden sands of Fiji as a golf destination, but the islands actually offer six 18-hole golf courses - so there’s plenty of opportunity to work on your swing while you’re on vacation here. The most spectacular course is Laucala Island, owned by the Red Bull magnate Dietrich Mateschitz and designed by David McLay Kidd. The course is built up against green-sided mountains and descends right to the beach for the 12th hole, with the green nestled right alongside the Pacific Ocean.

Taveuni vacation rentals

The island of Taveuni - also known as the garden island - is a nature lover’s dream. The third biggest island in Fiji, much of the landmass is covered in lush rainforest - which is home to a huge variety of birdlife, tropical plants, hidden waterfalls and more. Hikers will love hitting the trails to find natural pools to swim in and see an abundance of brightly colored tropical flowers. Birdwatching fans should head for the Bouma National Heritage Park to see red and green Kula Lorikeets and Orange Doves in their natural habitat. Taveuni also makes a great base for a snorkeling or diving trip to the great white wall - a natural ocean shelf covered in bright white coral. With private pools and plenty of outdoor space, our Taveuni vacation rentals are a great choice for a week or two exploring all the natural wonders of this beautiful place.
