The A-Frame

Vanessa AineLeighRating, 5 stars1 week ago
Our A Frame stay was perfect! Highly recommend! A great base from which to explore hiking Wild Nephin National Park and located in an absolutely stunning area - gorgeous coastal views to one side and beautiful Mountain View’s to the other. Super close to Westport and groceries, dining, etc. if needed. The cabin is immaculately clean, modern design and amenities, and plenty of room for meal prep. Really pretty light and views. Abundant hot water and heat, washer, dryer, and dishwasher all brand new and work great. Comfy cozy bed and couches/chairs. Serene outdoor spaces and surrounds in a private yard that feels secluded but safe at the end of a lane with charming farmhouses. Brendan is responsive and helpful host. We loved our stay and would stay again if we’re in the area in the future!

Bellaveeny Lodge {With Hot Tub & Bar}

LeahRating, 5 stars1 week ago
I could not recommend John’s house highly enough. We stayed here for two nights as a group of 12 and we wish we could have stayed for a week. The house is beautiful beyond belief, so spacious and fully equipped with everything you could think of to cater for big groups. The hot tub and bar are wonderful additions to an already amazing house. Even though we didn’t have perfect weather we still enjoyed making the most of the hot tub. The house is even more impressive in person than how it looks in photos and the view surrounding it is breathtaking. It’s a real retreat and the perfect place to gather with friends/ family. Only a ten minute drive to Mulranny town and beach, but you probably won’t want to leave the house! An incredible stay, thank you so much to John and Sharon who were always so helpful and responsive to messages. I hope we’ll be back again soon!

Wave Watcher

We stayed with Bridget in her beautiful holiday home and had the most wonderful time. She is an absolute superhost – warm, welcoming, and made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. Our little son was thrilled with the friendly dogs and curious chickens, and to top it all off, we even spotted dolphins from the garden! The views are simply breathtaking. The house itself is newly renovated, tastefully decorated, and has everything you could possibly need. We would come back in a heartbeat!

Achill Atlantic House

RichardRating, 5 stars2 days ago
We (four of us) stayed for week in Kevin’s amazing house. The location is jaw-droppingly beautiful and the house is perfect and makes the most of the stellar views. It helps to have the beach literally at the end of the garden of course, and this all added to an idyllic week on Achill, even when the weather didn’t oblige. Kevin was fantastic at supplying local information and his passion for the place is apparent and infectious! This has to be one of the best properties I have ever stayed in on Airbnb. Can’t recommend highly enough.

Lios an Uisce Cottage Connemara

PattiRating, 5 stars3 weeks ago
We stayed in Cashel for 3 nights during our Ireland trip. The cottage was lovely — even nicer than the beautiful pictures. We enjoyed watching the bay each day. The beds were very comfortable and the size was just fine for 2 large-ish people. It is close to Roundstone and Clifden. Malachy Bodhran’s workshop is a must see in Roundstone - what an interesting person!

Carraig Mór - Modern luxury in Achill Island

GemmaRating, 5 stars11 months ago
It was our second time holidaying in Carraig Mor and we weren't disappointed. House had everything we needed and then some. We were more that comfortable and both kids and adults loved our stay. Louise's dad Tommy was helpful in every way and full of information and brought us in a lovely side of cooked salmon towards the end of our break. Would highly recommend staying to any one of their houses. We'll certainly be back! Thanks for everything Tommy and Louise

Beautiful home with sea views, Louisburgh Co. Mayo

SimonRating, 5 stars1 month ago
This was our second visit to Pulgloss, and we love it just as much as the first time. The ever-changing view of Clare Island is endlessly enjoyable. The house is perfect for our family getaway—comfortable, well-equipped, and spacious. Catherine is a fantastic host; when we encountered a minor issue with the key and the dishwasher, she responded and resolved it immediately. The addition of a travel cot for our new born was really helpful. We’re already looking forward to our next stay. Thank you, Catherine and Peter, for another wonderful experience!

Your guide to Clare Island

All About Clare Island

Located off the west coast of Ireland at the entrance to Clew Bay, Clare Island is full of rugged cliffs, rolling green hills, and turquoise waters lapping its shores. The largest of the Mayo Islands — surrounded by the smaller Caher, Inishturk, and Achill Islands — Clare Island is only five miles long and three miles wide, and although there are a fair number of visitors in the summer, it never gets too crowded. With its pristine beaches, excellent bird watching, and beautiful walks, it’s a prime spot for nature lovers.

Clare Island is well-known for being the home of the 16th-century pirate queen Grace O’Malley, the first female Irish tribe leader who controlled the coastal waters 400 years ago. The O’Malley family owned most of Clare Island, and the remains of their old watchtower stand on the island’s east side. The island’s abbey, also founded by the family, is said to date from the 12th century, though it was rebuilt around 1460. You can explore the abbey, whose interior is elaborately decorated with carved figureheads, medieval wall and ceiling paintings, and the O’Malley crest. It’s also rumored to be the burial site of Grace O’Malley.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Clare Island

The best time to book your Clare Island accommodation is during the summer, when the weather is warm and the days are long. Fall brings cooler temperatures, though this is the perfect time for exploring the island’s walking trails, which offer stunning vistas of the island’s cliffs and the clear waters below. The Clare Island Film Festival in September brings film buffs from near and far. Winter is quiet and chilly and can be wet, so be sure to bring plenty of layers and proper shoes. Spring sees warmer temperatures, and there are two popular running races in April that draw lots of fans.

Top things to do in Clare Island

Knockmore Hill

The steep hike up this 1,500-foot hill is well worth it for the views of Clew Bay, the west coast of Ireland, and the Atlantic Ocean. The ascent is steep over grassy — and sometimes boggy — slopes, and there’s a large cairn just to the west of the trig point at the summit. It takes about an hour to climb, and it gets very windy at the top, so be sure to bring layers.

Bird-watching

The cliffs of Clare Island are home to large numbers of nesting seabirds, and this is the perfect place to watch them. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to spot gannets, manx shearwaters, puffins, razorbills, herring gulls, and many other species. Summer offers the best opportunity for seeing them, as Clare Island is a popular breeding ground for most of these birds.

The Lost Valley

The majestic Lost Valley is a 30-minute drive down the coast from the Roonagh Ferry. Visit the deserted village from the famine era with its memorial to those lost and get insight into the cultural heritage of the west of Ireland. You can also hike the natural woodlands, take a swim in the lakes and waterfalls, and stroll on the golden sandy beaches while enjoying the views of Killary Fjord and the magnificent Mweelrea mountain in the distance.
