Places to stay in Mortlake
Situated on our 140 acre farm “Cambus Glen” near the settlement of Framlingham in South-West Victoria, the Shearers’ Cottage is a fully renovated sheep shearers accommodation. The Scottish name “Cambus Glen” means valley where a twisting river passes. This refers to our 2km of Hopkins River frontage – Scottish because the farm is home to our small fold (or herd) of Highland Cattle.
The cottage is situated in its own private shady garden, overlooking the rolling green (in winter) and gold (in summer) pastures. Fitted out as a studio apartment, it has a queen sized bed adjoining the living and dining areas. The fully equipped kitchen has a two plate electric hob, fridge, microwave and small appliances with a gas BBQ outside on the porch. Tea and coffee and some other pantry basics are provided. There is an air conditioner, a wood-burning stove and plenty of blankets for those cold winter evenings. Guests can make a supervised visit to see the cattle, with plenty of great photo opportunities. It is also possible to take a stroll along the river, where koala sightings are guaranteed, but wallabies and, occasionally, platypus can also be spotted. For those wishing to explore the region – we are a 30 minute drive from the rugged South-West Victorian coast. Explore the Shipwreck coast between Port Fairy and Cape Otway – see the rock formations of the Port Campbell National Park and continue for another 30 minutes to Loch Ard Gorge and the 12 Apostles National Park. Visit Warrnambool, the picturesque Koroit and Port Fairy, or enjoy one of the many walking tracks in the area or the Warrnambool to Port Fairy rail trail.
  • WOW - We just fell in love with this cottage and enjoyed every minute. The hosts are very nice and helpful. They showed us their cows and different walking tracks where you can see wild koalas in the trees. You can do day trips to the Great Ocean Road as it isn't far away from this place. Our favorites were the great view from the cottage (including a BBQ) as well as the fire place in the house. We would always come back!

  • The host was very nice. The Australian fire gave us a lot of information. Although the Great Ocean Road was not affected, the host specifically suggested that if we change the itinerary, we can refund me. The house is a 15-minute walk from the 24-hour supermarket in the center of the town. The surroundings are quiet and a good experience.

  • We had a great time staying at Linda's place. The place is a cabin and is separate from the main house so has privacy. Linda's attention to detail in setting this up is outstanding. We had everything we could need. We especially appreciated the snacks left for us. This is an ideal location for stopping over on the Great Ocean Road trip or if you're looking for something authentically Australian and a bit different from your typical airbnb. Communication with Linda was super. We highly recommend staying here.

  • Had a wonderful two night stay at Linda and Barry’s farm. Beautiful rural location for enjoying the sounds and experiences of wildlife and the farm. So relaxing. Loved seeing the cows come in to be milked. The space had everything we needed and was so clean. Amazing to see the kangaroos, so kind of Linda to lend us the buggy to go around the farm and see them at sunset. Barry and Linda were friendly and responded quickly to any questions we had. Thanks again. Charlotte and Mel

You can absolutely enjoy the silence at this place and at the same time you are very close to the great ocean road. We could definitely recommend this Airbnb and would come back! A country haven that can comfortably house a family of 4 or 5. Double bed in hall & large couches where kids can sleep if need be plus seperate bedroom with Queen bed. Modern kitchen and bathroom.

  • This was a lovely place to unwind for a couple of days during our trip around Victoria. There's not much to do in Hexham, but that was the point for us. The hall is both interesting (historically) and well set up as a home away from home. Shops and a laundrette are available in nearby Mortlake.

  • If you enjoy interacting with outstanding hosts and enjoying great facilities, this is the place for you. We enjoyed sitting down to breakfast and enjoyed chatting with Anne-Marie and John. It is a beautiful environment with animals, birds and green fields, along with a Zen garden just outside our door. The cinema room is an added bonus. Five stars all round.

  • It was sparkling clean and feel like home. I didn't feel at all, that was the first time, I met Anna-Marie and John, seems like we've been friends for ages. Thanks so much guys.

    Negar2019-03-30T00:00:00Z
  • Thank you very much! It was a great experience. The surrounding environment is very comfortable, we can see the stars at night, very quiet. The house is tasteful, the garden is beautiful and exquisite. The room was clean and the bedsheets were patterned Chinese tatoo. My son also had a good time here, feeding sheeps, bulls, alpacas and so on. Anne-Marie is also talkative, friendly. She and her husband John were pleasant to communicate with us! Great experience.

    Jiaming2019-03-19T00:00:00Z
  • One word...fantastic. The huge house with all brand-new interior, the location at the river, the breakfast possibilities and especially the hosts Anne-Marie and John. We had great chats and they open nearly their whole home for guests. As our arrival was late we could even cook something using their pantry and fridge. Highly recommended!

  • Airbnb needs to add a sixth star option just for Anne-Marie and her home. You will absolutely not find a host more welcoming or a space more stylish, spotless, comfortable and inviting. Thanks Anne-Marie for your above and beyond hostessing - the home cooked brekkie and chance to feed the sweet farm animals pushed it all over the top. Definitely coming back!

  • Rachael’s house is very beautiful and comfortable, every window is a wonderful picture! We had a great stay in it.

    Heather2020-01-18T00:00:00Z
  • Really charming cottage for someone looking for a quiet and peaceful stay. We loved how the home was well stocked. Rachel has provided linen and towels which made things quite easy for us. There is only one bathroom with a toilet for the 6 of us adults to share which was difficult at some points but we managed. Only recommendation to improve would be to place Mirrors in the rooms so don’t have to use the bathroom mirror and placing a lock in the bathroom for privacy. The cottage is approx 40 mins away from The main town so definitely worth stocking up on essentials before going. Otherwise we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and definitely would recommend for those looking for a charming and peaceful stay.

Our self-contained studio is a rural retreat, set in extensively landscaped gardens overlooking farmland and stunning scenery. The studio is newly built, compact and peaceful with all the basics you will need, including fresh free range farm eggs for breakfast. The property is nice and private and away from the main house. Due to strict cleaning and disinfecting requirements post Covid-19, which we plan to adhere to, we are only able to offer minimum 2 night bookings, or longer, at present.
Set on five acres of land in the hilly valley of Woodford, our beautiful property has stunning views overlooking farmland. Take a walk around the property and immerse yourself in the healing power of nature, listen to the birds and take a look at our farm animals. We have Alpaca, sheep, pigs and chickens. Please close the gates and be careful of the electric fence around the pigs. Also there is a tree lined walking track alongside the Merri River approximately 5-10 minutes walk away, perfect for walking and cycling. This property is within a 10 minute drive of Warrnambool, 20 mins to Port Fairy and 20 minutes to the Great Ocean Road.
This is a quiet neighbourhood in a newly developed area of Woodford.

We can highly recommend this place if you're looking for friendly and helpful hosts, for a swimmingpool, and for various animals you can have fun with. The breakfast was delicious and a great start into the day. Many thanks for the nice conversation and the time we were allowed to spend in your house. All the best to you and your family.

  • Margaret and Ross were really great hosts. We felt very welcome over the whole stay. The accommodation was exceptional clean and tidy and at the same time very cosy and comfortable. The farm is extremely beautiful with horses, chicken and cats. The breakfast was a perfect start into the day filled with very good recommendations what to do. Fully recommended!!

  • Best ambience, great service, with petting zoo character

    Mathias2019-01-07T00:00:00Z
  • Margaret and Ross are both lovely people. Beautiful farm stay close to the volcanic lakes and planes, 12 Apostles and small town pubs. They both made us felt welcome, the atmosphere of the place had a very warm, homely feel. Comfy bed, beautiful room decor that gives refreshing country/beach vibes. Clean bathroom with soap and shampoos, "continental breakfast" selection was portioned and set up waiting for us in a quiet, little country kitchen. Margaret greeted us in and showed us where we would stay, Ross showed us the horses and around the outside of the property. Lovely, quiet farm stay for those that want to get away from the hustle and bustle, would definitely stay again if we are in the area.

After dark, refuel by enjoying a sumptuous meal at one of the nearby historic hotels
****IMPORTANT TO NOTE we are approx 45 km's from the start of the Great Ocean rd at Allansford/Warrnambool and approximately 70km's from the 12 Apostles*** Situated on our property, my family of 6 lived in this quaint little cottage for 2 years while we built our new home. Recently renovated Arnold's has 2 bedrooms - Bed 1 has one King bed and bed 2 has 1 queen bed. There is a small well equipped kitchen with full fridge, electric stove and oven, wood stove, microwave and a separate large dining room. The lounge room has a split system air conditioner as well as wood fire, comfortable couches, television and DVD's. The property has one bathroom and toilet (located in the bathroom).

Come and enjoy a real country experience. The house is warm and cosy with lots of quirky touches. It opens onto a sunny covered veranda and there are lots of spots to wander or sit in outside. From the garden and driveway there are inspiring views over a valley and green hills, dotted with cows. We will enjoy chatting with guests, and after many years living here we know all the area’s interesting places and things to do.
Our accomodation is homely, warm and inviting. With pleny of outside seating and reading nooks. Wander around the sheds and gardens. Meet the resident cows and three inside cats. Take a walk along a quiet country road past cypress trees and flowing streams, and you will see some goats too.
Camperdown a thriving small town ten minutes away has coffee shops and restaurants, two great pubs, shops, cinema showing art films from time to time. Camperdown has Mount Leura at its edge. You can drive or walk up to the top for great views of the area and many other distant volcanic graters. And there is a lovely established botanic garden at the edge of town with views of two lakes. Even closer is the smaller town of Cobden with a pub, coffee shops, and a great take away Asian food place, a go cart track and small train track. Nearby is picturesque Lake Purrumbete with its freshwater fishing and Lake Edge Cafe. The larger Lake Bullin Meri near Camperdown also has great freshwater fishing.
  • Malcolm and Shirley are long time locals who can steer you towards many interesting things to do in this gorgeous area. Their hospitality was awesome.

Historic 1875 bluestone cottage with bricked extension, situated within 300 metres of the superb freshwater Lake Bolac in Victoria. It is the residence of Australian singer songwriter Neil Murray who was raised in the surrounding district. Fabulous weekend retreat with aquatic activities and fishing nearby and easy driving access to Gariwerd-Grampians National Park and regional wineries and centres such as Ararat, Stawell, Hamilton or the coast at Warrnambool.
The house is quite spacious with a large family room and an older heritage style lounge or sitting room and three separate bedrooms.
Lake Bolac is a fresh water lake surrounded by the gently undulating basalt lava plains of central, western victoria. It has a rich pre- european history of indigenous gatherings held annually at the lake to harvest fresh water eels. This tradition is carried on today with the Lake Bolac Eel festival - a two day feast of music, art, indigenous dancing and environmental forums that occur every two years in late March. In summer the lake is a mecca for water skiing, boating, swimming and fishing enthusiasts. The area is mostly farmland, predominantly cropping with some sheep and cattle grazing with local businesses serving the rural industry. The town itself has a hotel, general store, milkbar-takeway outlet, cafe and business information centre with bank and ATM. For more substantial shopping the rural city of Ararat is 30 mins drive away. The Gariwerd/Grampians National park can be accessed via Dunkeld, Willaura or Ararat/Moyston- and is a recommended day trip.
  • Great location, nice and relaxing place to unwind after exploring the local sites. Even without air conditioning, it was quite comfortable. I would prefer to stay in winter so we could enjoy the open fire place. If you don’t mind older furniture and rustic places then this will suit you.

  • Our stay at Neil’s house was great, we had a fantastic time and would recommend the house to others!

    Isabella2019-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • Neil was a great host and the cottage was very clean and comfortable. The kids loved the tree house and playing in the garden. Lake Bolac was a great location to base for exploring the the local area. Loved the fireplace too. Thank you

  • Great house walking distance to Lake Bolac. Very easy check-in, and house had everything needed for a comfortable stay. I stayed during a particularly cold couple of days - so appreciated the heaters, extra doona and especially the open fireplace! Thanks again Neil.

    Lisa2019-09-10T00:00:00Z
  • Clean, cozy and a great base to explore. The fire was lit for us prior to arriving and plenty of firewood to keep us going all weekend. Spotlessly clean and had all amenities anyone could need. Thoroughly enjoyed the relaxing break.

  • Neil was a great host with a quick response to our needs.

    Alby2019-04-12T00:00:00Z
  • Have stayed at Neil's place before. It's neat and tidy, self contained and I would stay again.

    Jackson2018-10-26T00:00:00Z
  • Great stay in Lake Bolac, can imagine it would be a great spot in Summer when you can use the lake. Neil was so prompt with replying to communications and if any problems did arise he fixed it right away. The house is quite cold in winter but plenty of wood was available for the fires, and there are heaters in the bedroom so they are toasty.

Originally the married mens quarters on the farm, fitting 2 married couples, this shack has been extensively renovated and modernised in to a comfortable getaway for a family or couple wanting a weekend or more away from it all, the shack is part of a historic old sheep farm in Western Victoria that is still operated by the family of the original squatter, an easy drive to the Grampians or the world renown 12 Apostles or just stay on the farm and have a look at a farming lifestyle.
The Shack is located on a 7th Generation Sheep farming enterprise, and has plenty of heritage of buildings and offers a insight of when Australia 'rode on the sheeps back'.

Earth Tree Cottage is set in the heart of Terang: a rural town between Camperdown & Warrnambool. Terang is a vibrant village nestled in Volcanic plains: with ancient craters & lakes providing breathtaking views. Terang is surrounded by farms & the richness of local & regional produce: including organic cheeses, olives & wines. The town features trees of national significance & is a wonderful place to recharge & base yourself with easy access to the Grampians, Otways & the Great Ocean Road !
We respectfully acknowledge our home is on Gunditjmara country. We warmly welcome you to enjoy Earth Tree Cottage... our simple yet nourishing place filled with tranquility and special touches to help your journey be one of replenishment. The tariff is a set rate for up to four guests. Additional guests @ $15 pp p/n. The master bedroom has a pillow top King Size bed ; the remaining two bedrooms have a queen & double bed. There is a portable cot available for use. We warmly welcome families to our home. Our combined kitchen and lounge is a wonderful space and guests love the wood fire which brings warmth and is the heart of our home. The bathroom is older style with a shower over the bath. It has hand rails to ensure ease of use for those requiring more support. The toilet is separate and is off the laundry. The rear bedroom overlooks our amazing garden which is filled with veggies and fruit trees : delicious peaches, plums, apples, lemon, tomatoes and we have amazing produce of passion fruit, herbs, pumpkins, strawberries and grapes (all seasonal). You are more than welcome to enjoy our little harvest. We provide complimentary teas, coffee and condiments so you feel at home. Our neighbors are delightful and live quietly - we simply ask you respectfully enjoy our home and the quietness at night. By day the township is a short walking distance with our compendium highlighting local delights including the ‘dry crater lake’ : a wonderful 45 minute gentle walk through farmlands at the edge of the village. You will see horses, sheep, baby lambs and local dairy cows gently grazing along the way. There is nothing like the fresh air of a morning walk around the dry lake followed by a scrumptious breakfast in one of our local cafes. The evenings are magical too. Enjoy a wine or cuppa sitting around the cast iron fireplace in our garden and watch the moon rise and sky come alive : the stars are incredible and shine so brightly away from city lights. Now for some of the must do locations ! Warrnambool is the closest city and the gateway to the Great South West Walk. Just 35 minutes by car or 40mins by train: the Terang railway is a 4 minute walk from our home. Enjoy the whale nursery at Logan’s Beach and the majestic Great Ocean Road. We are just 30-35 minutes to the Bay of Apostles, Bay of Martyrs & Peterborough .... with the Twelve Apostles just outside Port Campbell - a further 20 minutes along the ‘Great Ocean Road’. There are wonderful journeys to be had - including the magnificent national heritage listed Grampians National Park (Gariwerd) via Dunkeld (1 hr away) with Halls Gap a further 45 min drive. Visit the Great Otway National Park or the Great South West walk. Explore the cultural gifts of Tower Hill. There are numerous waterfalls, lakes, rivers, native flora and fauna - many unique to the area. At the end of each day enjoy sunsets on the deck and soak up the warmth of the fire in the garden and then inside. We are so fortunate to live in this amazing part of the world and welcome you to enjoy Earth Tree Cottage.
Visit our local Terang markets held on the first Saturday of each month. Terang's best pizza is home made at the Wheatsheaf Hotel ; the Commercial hotel's Les & team will welcome you to enjoy this amazing space : and there are wonderful cafes and bakeries as well. Our local supermarkets do close by 6-7 pm so please ensure you check their current opening hours when you stay. For local produce visit the Greavsey's fruit and veggie shop who also stock organic foods. The local swimming pool is open during summer or the beach is just a 25 minute drive away. There is a hospital, medical centre and main services in the township. Terang is known as a town of historic trees including the giant Oaks on the dry crater lake walk and cherry blossoms that line the streets of the town.

  • Earth Tree Cottage is ideally located in Terang, a lovely wee town with some excellent bakeries and other local shops and sights. It is also convenient for day trips etc. The house is lovely, we spent 4 fantastic weeks there. The thoughtful wee touches, the sense of tranquillity, the comfortable beds, and the garden is amazing. Sally and Scott are excellent hosts, considerate and thoughtful, communication was extremely good. We all had a brilliant time here, and look forward to returning when we're next in Australia

  • The cottage was exactly as described and situated within walking distance of the main Street. Terang is a lovely destination, within half an hour's drive from Warrnambool. My husband enjoyed the golf courses at Terang, Camperdown and Port Fairy. I loved the history of the area and the antique stores. Scott and Sally were fantastic hosts. 100%

A fabulous room for 2. Balcony and good access to toilets recreation room and other facilities such as cafe, reading room bar and outside garden.
End of cycle building from the early 1900s. Inspired craftsmenship. Remarkable design. Cleverly restored. Relaxing bedrooms and other facilities.
This is a fabulous town and one of the most important spaces in Australia. It carries the shame of early genocidal activity and the pride of developing the richest agricultural environment in Australia. Its geology is transfixing and its cultural history dynamic and fascinating.
  • Les was a great host. The venue had old school charm and there was everything you needed. The food was wonderful, Les cooked me a delicious breakfast.

    Melody2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time, Les was very interested and informative. We learned a lot and shared many experiences, Les is a wealth of information about the area and about life and living. He really enjoys things best when the breakfast table if full of people from all over the world.

  • Les is an amazing host and it felt like being welcomed into a little community as soon as we arrived. I'm a little sad we didn't actually stay longer here, and would recommend the place to anyone :)

  • We had a great stay in Terang. Check in was easy, the room was beautifully set up. Perfect for our one night stay. We really enjoyed the atmosphere of the place. Would happily stay again the next time we need somewhere to stay.

    Britnee2019-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • The building and room was just as described. The building has an old B&B British charm to it and worth checking out if you plan to visit the Great Ocean Road (GOR). We ended up staying too long on GOR and needed find a place to spend the night. Within 30 minutes of our first message, Les was able to accommodate us. He was hospitable, welcoming and a delight.

A delightful room, nominally the honeymoon suite. Perfect for a romantic stay. You have a most comfortable bed, a charming balcony and a bathroom across the hall for just $85 pn . You also get a café and a self cook kitchen, a bar, a beer garden, a reading room, an events space and of course a relaxing lounge. The boutique hotel is an historical event and so close to the Great Ocean Road. Terang also deserves at least a few days of exploration for its indigenous and agricultural history.
Terang has a wonderful skyline, stars that seem to radiate just for us and fine buildings but it is also the perfect gateway to the Grampians' and the south west towns of Warrnambool, Koroit and Port Fairy. Great golf courses, horse and bike riding and fascinating treks. Dont miss Mt Noorat or Tower Hill. This is a great place to be anytime of year .
This is a town with everything but you. We love meeting new people, showing them the vital things that make our life so comfortable here and learning from them. We encourage people to.mix and love it when new friendships emerge.
  • Enjoyed our overnight stay and conversations with Les. The hotel experience is like stepping back in time . Rooms and bathrooms clean.

    Marten2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • What a find! I was in town for family reasons as opposed to leisure, and found myself such a soft landing place. The building itself is wonderful, like a time capsule. Everything sparkling clean and so much character and history everywhere you look. There was a very moving photographic exhibition to view and I believe much more which I did not have the opportunity to explore. Les shows films, showcases art and is a passionate supporter of all aspects of art, literature and cinema. A great location for those who are sight seeing and also within Terang. Within metres of supermarket etc. I was arriving by train and Les very kindly met me at the station and deposited me there when I left several days later. The hospitality and warmth shared by Les was totally unanticipated and simply amazing. In between challenging visits with a dearly loved sick relative, Les provided magnificent conversation, kind gestures and friendship to a total stranger that meant so much. I could not more highly recommend all aspects of staying here at the Commercial Hotel.

    Samantha2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • It's a lovely hotel in vintage style. We really enjoyed our stay there and our chat with Les. Les is really nice, I wish we could stay longer :) There are a lot of delicate small vintage decorations and books in the hotel. The beds were comfortable, washrooms were clean and a wide range of breakfast was provided. We had everything we needed there! We will definitely come back!

    Casey2019-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • Les is an extremely friendly host, his BNB has a lovely vintage spin to it with lots of breakout spaces if you don't feel like meeting new people. Our trip was delayed by a few hours and Les was very communicative and accommodating, especially in the middle of Christmas/New Years holiday.
