Be the first to stay in this beautiful wing of this former village church, tastefully decorated and equipped with everything you’d need to relax in this rural peaceful corner of Devon. Soak in your own private hot tub, or chill out on the raised decking area watching the sheep graze and the sun set, whilst listening to your favourite music on the outdoor speakers connected to Sonos. Play it as loud as you like, there's no neighbours for 1km in any direction!
Up to 4 guests can have the exclusive use of 5 rooms - accessed via your own personal door to the rear of the church. This area leads straight onto the decked walkway with access to the hot tub. The spacious Master Bedroom with a king size luxury bed and 42" LED TV and Sonos dock. The Snug - consisting of 2 versatile singles, that can be made up as a double or 2 singles, with a study area to the other end. The Ante Room - all rooms lead of this, and it's a perfect space to sit and read a book. The Kitchenette - all the things you'd need to prepare a basic meal, including a fridge freezer and washing machine. The Shower Room - A double power shower and generous sized bathroom. All rooms have a good wifi connection / Ethernet ports.
A stunning area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB!) with amazing views for miles around - you cannot see another house from this location, so make as much noise as you like! There is guest parking for 2 cars, and the local village pub is 1 mile stroll away. A convenience store is 2 miles away, and for larger supermarkets and restaurants there is the market towns of Tavistock or Callington just 5 miles away. We are slap bang between the 2, just 1 mile into Devon from the river Tamar.
  • A lovely, quirky place to stay. Gorgeous location, quiet but close to town and perfect base for exploring Dartmoor. The hot tub was a perfect addition!

  • Amazing! Everything was spot on. My first time using Airbnb to book a spontaneous trip and I couldn’t have picked a better place, the pictures do not even do this justice. A very unique place which I will definitely be returning to. Thank you!

    Roxy2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely quirky place, which went well with a board game evening and scary horror film. Hot tub was fantastic (despite the horrendous storms) and the house was very cosy and warm! Thank you for letting us enjoy the very beautiful old chapel. X

  • Fantastic isolated setting in the middle of fields. Lovely property with beautiful clean and warm hot tub out in the fresh air in the garden. 15 min walk to great rustic pub.

  • 100% recommend to anyone who wants to get away for a weekend. Its the perfect location, far away from any city but close enough to enjoy a day out on Dartmoor/ Plymouth. The hot tub was extremely relaxing despite the February weather! Thank you so much!

Covid -19 Due to the government advice against non-essential travel and advocating social distancing to stop the unnecessary spread of Covid 19 The Count House is now closed. I am contacting present bookings as the advice changes. Stay Safe! Claire The Count House was once a Mine office, now it is a light filled holiday cottage. Set on a wooded hillside with stunning views over the River Tamar. The private garden steeps you in nature with deer, swallows and brimstones all regular visitors.
  • We loved our time at The Count House. Beautiful inside and out. So peaceful with the only sounds being the Tamar rapids and the birds. Best airbnb we've stayed in to date.

    Jane2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely place to stay. We switched our phones off for four days and sank into the peace of Dartmoor. Appreciated things like the low-key communications, and the thoughtful, calm aesthetic of the house. Will definitely return, thanks Claire.

    Bec2019-12-16T00:00:00Z
  • The view from the house is really beautiful - the location couldn't be better. The house itself is very comfortable and well appointed, with a nice big wood burner. I would highly recommend Claire's place if you're looking for a break surrounded by nature. We loved our stay (and the friendly cat that came to visit).

    Siobhan2019-11-18T00:00:00Z
  • If a break away in a very cosy ,stylish cottage with every convenience ,that feels as if it is a retreat from hectic city life , surrounded by natural beauty and easy to navigate walks is what you are looking for Claire’s Count House is the best you are likely to find

    Brendan2019-11-15T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful place to stay, everything that you needed, a magical place to stay, lot's of peace and quiet just what the "doctor ordered", will definitely be returning. Sparkling clean and Claire our host was lovely.

    Jennifer2019-10-29T00:00:00Z
  • Our third time at The Count House and, after a very hectic few months, a complete tonic! So peaceful and relaxing, the house is perfectly located, nestled in the Tamar Valley with gorgeous walks right on the doorstep. The Count House is comfortable and welcoming in a wonderfully uncontrived, unfussy way. The bed is super comfy and waking up to that incredible view each morning is a sight to lift the soul. We were especially privileged to see a beautiful deer in the garden on a couple of occasions, and the visit from the friendly little black cat, who sat with my husband as he did a bit of painting and drawing on the bench outside was lovely, too! We'll be back in the Spring for more of the same!

    Kirsty2019-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • Such a lovely peaceful spot and very cosy cottage break!

    Edward2019-10-05T00:00:00Z
  • We very much enjoyed our stay, it was a perfect location to retreat from busy day to day life. The house had a homely feel, clean, safe and secure. Lots of stuff to do around this area, whether going for walks around Tamar river and near by places or visiting sanctuaries (we loved the wallabies at otter wild life centre) and even visiting near by towns and attractions.

    Rachel & Dave2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • The cottages are beautiful and in a lovely location with enough to do onsite. We had a couple of issues which the host was very prompt in responding to. Would highly recommend for a trip with the family!

    Sarah2020-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic place, in the countryside but close to local amenities (with a car) long barn is lovely, fantastic facilities and greta for our family get together

    Ryan2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • We booked the 3 cottages together for my father in laws 70th birthday and we weren’t disappointed. On arrival we received a warm welcome and given a guide around the site which includes an indoor pool and hot tub, gym, games room and outdoor hot tub. We were then given the keys for our 3 cottages and moved straight in. I was staying in Hawthorne, the largest of the 3, which had a large amount of space to easily sit the 15 of us when we were all together. Our cottage had 2 king sized bedrooms with en-suite and 2 twin rooms with a family bathroom. The cottage also has a well equipped kitchen to prepare and cook food. The location is just wonderful. No noise whatsoever and fantastic views. Snowy the donkey was also well fed with apples by the kids. Cannot find fault with this place at all and would definitely stay again

    Simon2019-11-11T00:00:00Z
  • This place is fantastic, the accommodation is spotless, the kitchens are so well presented and they available pots, pans, dishwasher etc made it easy to cook a roast for 16 people. The facilities here are well maintained and we had so much to do we didn’t the site the whole weekend. The host is easy to get hold of, provided us with a tour and gave us all the information needed. Highly recommend this place, literally no faults.

    Vikki2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect place for a large family get together. Well equipped, quiet and great hot tub!

    Hannah2019-06-10T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent hospitality and accommodation. An absolutely beautiful setting too. What more could you want!

    Joanna2019-05-23T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cottages with great view's and grounds. Ample bathrooms so no one felt on top of each other. The beds were super comfortable and the entire cottage was very clean. Having the games room, pool and hot tub on site kept us all entertained. There are other properties and groups on site but the lay out and size of the land means you don't notice or really even see anyone around so you feel pretty exclusive. As has been mentioned in previous reviews the kitchen is pretty tiny and not really suitable to cook a large family meal. The size of the kitchen doesn't correspond to the lovely big table in the cottage. We managed fine but the only 'meals' we cooked were pizza and bacon sandwiches in the morning!

The cottage is situated in a quiet location in the market town of Tavistock, but it is walking distance to the town square. It's only two miles to Dartmoor National Park, which you can see from our garden. A Victorian miners' cottage, part of the Tamar Valley World Heritage Site, it is cosy and refurbished to a high standard. It is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travellers, families (with kids), and pets. One of our guests summed it up: 'The cottage is an absolute jewel'
The Cottage is spacious and has been renovated recently, the latest addition being a wood burning stove in the front room. There is sitting room, kitchen and dining room, two double bedrooms and another with bunkbeds. There is also a sofa bed available for two more. It can sleep eight people. We also have a travel cot for babies. There is a stair gate at the bottom of the stairs. There are two toilets, one upstairs and one downstairs, a bath and a separate walk in shower. The kitchen is fully equipped with a washing machine and a dishwasher. Pets are welcome. The garden is free for you to use and we are a short walk from the town, local park, swimming pool and arts centre, with cinema. There is free internet and a smart tv. Also available are board games, books, DVDs, piano and guitar.
Fitzford Cottages are unique. We are part of the Tamar Valley World Heritage site. The Victorian miners cottage was built in 1862 as ideal housing for the Duke of Bedford's mines. We are situated in the town but in a quiet location. It is peaceful and secluded whilst being walking distance from the attractions of the town. Tavistock is an award winning market town with independent shops, an indoor pannier market and a choice of superb restaurants, pubs and tearooms.
  • A charming, cosy cottage in a great location. We would happily stay again :-)

    Richard2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cottage! We all enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back again. It’s in a great location as it’s close enough to town but still very quiet. Unfortunately we only had a few days there and didn’t have an opportunity to explore in and around Tavistock much but there’s more than enough to do in the area to keep you busy. There is also a guide in the cottage of things to do locally and around Devon. Cottage was clean and tidy and felt like a home away from home! We headed into town on our last night for a great meal as there’s plenty of places to eat or shops are within walking distance of you prefer to cook yourself. We didn’t really have any issues but Christina answered any questions we had promptly and was helpful when we needed her.

    Lee2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • It's a lovely house & Christina is a good host. Only able to stay one night this trip however we'd like to go back again. The area looks great to explore.

    Jason2020-02-13T00:00:00Z
  • Christina’s cottage is lovely. It looks like a little cottage but it’s a surprisingly commodious place, beautifully fitted out, in a very convenient spot for exploring Tavistock and its environs.

    Sue2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely little cottage and we enjoyed our stay... great communication from the host... the only thing I’d say is go careful in the back garden if you have a dog because the gardens are all open, but the front little garden was great for a springer

    Amanda2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing cottage!! We stayed here for 1 night! It was our annual girls Christmas get together and we loved how cosy and relaxing it was! Christina is such an amazing host and helped us when we needed it! Would definitely recommend this cottage!!

    Nicolle2019-12-14T00:00:00Z
  • This lovely cottage is right in the heart of Tavistock. Just a short walk in to town. The cottage itself is a perfect mix of traditional and modern. It’s cosy and stylish and has everything you need for a stay away from home! Christina was really accommodating and helpful. Would definitely recommend and return!

    Sophie2019-11-10T00:00:00Z

    Julian2019-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • Such a fantastic place to stay! My daughter asked for a unique place to celebrate her Birthday and Ian's Megabus was spot on. Wonderfully converted and completed with everything for a great trip. Fully recommend!

    Mark2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • We had an amazing stay at the megabus. Really clean and tucked away meant we had plenty of privacy but easy access to local amenities. Ian and Sarah were brilliant hosts and we will definitely be back. Thanks

    Matthew2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • Such a great experience- couldn’t have been more wonderful. We were allowed to arrive early and get ready for the beach. It’s so remote and beautifully located- we let ourselves in and it was super private, we didn’t even see anyone until the next day- so nice. We bbq’d , hung out with the sheep, watched the stars and slept like a log! Bus has everything one needs and on top we met Ian who is such a great host with great stories! Highly recommended, especially if you want some time out, away from it all!

    Katrin2019-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great night in the megabus with our 4 year old son. Loved the novelty of staying ‘on board’ and exploring the field and meeting the animals. Beautiful setting. Sarah made us feel so welcome, the bus was really comfortable and the breakfast was great too. Highly recommended!

    Kerry2019-08-22T00:00:00Z

Wake up to the sound of birdsong and stunning views across the valley! We welcome you to stay in our beautiful Edwardian terraced house in our the aptly named "Sunshine Room", within the riverside village of Calstock, a World Heritage Site and within the Tamar Valley AONB. A perfect spot for peaceful relaxation and walking the many trails through the valley (less than 5 minutes from the back door). Only 40 minutes by car or train (on the scenic Tamar Valley Line!) from Plymouth city centre.
Our house has a peaceful atmosphere with plenty of gentle light and space. Old rustic features such as fireplaces and exposed beams combine with modern design features and objects that we have collected from our travels around South and South East Asia, to create a truly unique place to spend time. The house has a long sunny back garden with apple trees and a large willow tree that feels private despite the gardens either side. A wooden table and chair set are available for guests to use for alfresco dining in the warmer months (we will upload pictures of the garden soon!) Calstock is a quirky, lively village with extremely friendly locals (some real characters!). There is a relaxed atmosphere which attracts artists, musicians and many other creative souls. The village has a long and colourful history, it was once a flourishing mining, flower market and boatbuilding village. Mining for silver and copper, arsenic and manganese were historically important industries here. Calstock sits in a loop of the River Tamar, so much so that it has something of the character of an island. You drive into the village and turn around to go back out again - it's not on the way to anywhere. This makes it feel very special and it certainly has its own unique charm and old time character! It is a wonderful area to explore the wild ruins of the villages mining heritage, a peaceful place to be for nature lovers, bird watchers with wonderful walks directly from house.
You will not be short of stunning walks locally! There are numerous walks around the wooded valley particularly around the National Trust Tudor House, Cotehele House estate. Or you can acquaint yourself with the village by taking a circular walk around the riverside or stray off up into Harewood or through the woodlands to Danescombe Valley. The Tamar Valley Nature Trail sees you snaking along the River Tamar up to Chimney Rock with amazing views back down the river. A walk up Kit Hill, a 400 acre Country Park, the highest point in the Tamar Valley, is a must for the fine views and fascinating history. We have lots of ordinance survey maps of the area for guests to borrow and can recommend lots of other spots for local ramblings and ones further afield. More information... The house is a 3 minute walk to the centre of the village. Here you can find two cosy, dog-friendly pubs, which serve a good selection of food (and The Tamar Inn sometimes has live music!), The Boot Inn does a very yummy roast on a Sunday, Lishe, a idyllic cafe with delicious cakes and cream teas, an ice-cream parlour, an art gallery exhibiting art work, jewellery and ceramics by local artists in the tamar valley, a well equipped shop (with lots of fresh yummy fruit and veg, freshly cooked pasties and bread!), a small complementary therapy practice 'The Haven' offering massage, yoga, reflexology, homeopathy and shiatsu, and Calstock Arts, a community arts centre located in a beautifully converted Chapel on the banks of the River Tamar. Their carefully selected programme includes; folk, jazz, classical music, comedy, film, theatre, talks and exhibitions. Their current programme of events can be viewed at their website 'Calstock Arts'. There is plenty of opportunity for river trips, kayaking and general watery activities or you can try out tree surfing at the 'Tamar Trails Centre', a 15 min drive away. The centre is the main hub for exploring the 25km of trails for walkers, cyclists and horse riders that follow old mineral tramways and railways. We have plenty of pamphlets detailing all of these activities and with info on how to book. The pretty market town of Tavistock is but a 20 minute journey by car or bus and has a really interesting old indoor pannier market and a stunning historic high street with ample opportunities for shopping in individual boutique shops and delicatessens. From Tavistock you can access the Dartmoor National Park for some breathtaking moorland walks. If you have a hankering for some fresh sea air the nearest beaches are along the south coast, the closest being Seaton, Looe (which has a idyllic seaside town), the beautiful port and fishing village of Polperro. All about a 40-50 minute drive away. If you go a bit further and if you’re up for a bit of a hike then Lantic Bay will reward you with one of the most stunning locations in Cornwall without a doubt. The walk from Lantic Bay to Lansallos Bay is one of our favourites. You can also venture to the north cornish coastline. The beaches at Bude, Crackington Haven and Boscastle are all about an hours drive from the house. Crackington Haven is a small coastal village just West of Bude. Once a small harbour importing coal and limestone from Wales, which narrowly escaped industrial development in the 1800s, it is now a small unspoiled, almost secret, cove. Although is can get fairly busy in the summer, its a lot quieter than the beaches nearer to Bude. It is a great spot for body boarding and surfing with the right conditions!
  • Alice, Mark & Hetty are relaxed, friendly people and it is easy to feel welcomed and at home here very quickly - we felt like room mates rather than guests. The room is basic but comfortable and with a lovely view, and the use of kitchen space a real bonus!

    Katya2019-12-21T00:00:00Z
  • Alice and Hetty were amazing hosts! It's the first time we've stayed in a shared space and these guys were so welcoming and lovely. The room had this incredible view of Calstock (in rain or shine) and had a warming touch (soft lights, good books, throws). Would hands down recommend to anyone!

    Megan2019-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • Friendly warm environment,, beautiful views and walks not far from the home ,, Alices place is clean , tidy , cosy I would say,, everything was as it should be ,, I will be returning no doubt about it :) Also a lovely part of the country

  • This place is a gem!! So cosy, comfortable and sparkly clean. Truly a feeling of home away from home. We had a quiet night in enjoying the lovely little garden and snuggling on the sofa - we were sorry to leave after 2 nights! Highly recommend this place to anyone who'd like to enjoy a little piece of peace and quiet.

  • We had a nice weekend at Alices house with a wonderful view from our window over the tamar river. The place is perfect for going to the dartmoor or visiting plymouth and having a beer in the pub in the village. We really felt like being home!

  • Look no further folks for a beautiful character filled cottage. Rosemary is absolutely lovely and made me feel welcome and at home. A really lovely room comfortable bed bathroom right next to room I couldn't have wished for better!

  • A very memorable evening at Rosemary's well appointed cottage; spent sitting around the open fire chatting; with three happy dogs, two hers and one ours. Rosemary is a remarkable host and a captivating conversationalist who made us all three - including our wolf hound - feel very welcome. We enjoyed talking to her and loved meeting her cute Tibetan Terriers. The bedroom was cosy and the bed most comfortable to sleep in. Lots of lovely pictures around the house. For dinner we walked with the hound to the local pub The Carpenters Arms which turned out to be a bit of a dog heaven! Very tasty seafood. Overall, a fantastic stay. Thank you, Rosemary!

There's a number of great places to eat within a five min walk. Lovely cosy accommodation, nice kitchen with al the amenities you need. I'd certainly reccomend and stay again. • A cute place to stay with beautiful countryside all around. Lots to do and see close by.

    Ruth2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful time at the Granary! The house is a perfect little cottage, beautifully furnished and very practical. It is located on a farm and you can take all kinds of hikes from there, but you can also simply stay in and have a few cosy days. There is a farm shop not far up the road, which sells fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as bread, cheese, milk, eggs and other essentials. Although the Granary is somewhat remote, it is possible to arrive on foot from Tavistock, which is only about a one hour walk away. The landscape is somewhat hilly, but nothing too steep. Katie was a perfect hostess and helped us out a lot with maps and bus times for the region. We could always reach her via text or just ring her doorbell. All in all, the Granary is a great place for a quiet holiday!

My place is close to the Cornwall-Devon border not far from the beaches and Dartmoor. You’ll love my place because of the views, the open plan living space, the location. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, holiday makers, families (with kids), and furry friends (pets).
What makes my place so good is the price. It comes in at less than half the price of other similar holiday cottages. There are no extra cleaning costs. All I ask is you leave the place as you would like to find it.
There is a restaurant and bar on site as well as a games room for guest use. A good pub is a 10 minute walk away. There is no private garden but directly outside are large green spaces, a play area and tennis courts. The Donkey Park with large indoor play areas (and lots to do outside) is a short walk away.
  • We had a lovely few days here, nice and spacious yet cosy! Very comfortable bed and sofas, nice big TV & plenty of games and DVDS to keep you occupied! Had all the amenities you need and the area was beautiful! The bar on site did very tasty meals! Great value! Would deffo book again x

  • Great value accommodation in a lovely location . The house itself was quite basic but everything worked and the space in the living room upstairs is good for a family. The host is clear that it will have been cleaned by the previous guests and we found it tidy and usable but it could benefit from a professional clean at some point. The price certainly represents good value. Short walking distance to pub restaurant which has friendly staff and a good local trade so plenty of atmosphere on the nights we were there.

  • A great find for a weekend on the moor! Jane was a lovely host, very welcoming and approachable. The annex was comfortable and cosy despite the wet weather we had and had all the essentials you needed. Definitely recommend and can't wait to come again in the future.

  • We stayed one night because we were going to an event in Tavistock. The place is a little converted outbuilding, maybe once a garage. It's spotlessly clean and Jane went to a lot of trouble finding vegan breakfast items. It's about 10 minutes downhill to town and a steep walk back but definitely doable. It's very quiet and has everything you need for a short break.

    Jane2019-09-15T00:00:00Z

  • Such a beautiful setting. Jane was very welcoming and we loved her 2 beautiful cats and their little dog . The room was great and the bed VERY comfortable. It was lovely to have a little kitchen attached with coffee tea and hot chocolate provided plus milk, fresh juice jam and butter plus bread but the cooked breakfast was 1st class. Every thing was very clean and spacious parking. We can't wait to go back.

  • Such a beautiful cabin, situated in the countryside. Blown away by how amazing the stay was, loved every moment of staying there. every touch was lovely, the hot tub was great, the little touches such as the champagne and chocolates were a really nice idea. Cannot wait to come back for another stay.

  • The photos don’t do this amazing log cabin justice! It’s beautiful, private and so clean. Fantastic host, quick to reply. Lovely thoughtful touches with milk, tea and coffee, chocolates and a bottle of bubbly! Thank you Sarah :)

    Duane2020-01-17T00:00:00Z
  • The lodge was clean, everything we needed was there, perfect hot tub, nice location. The milk and bottle of bubbly was a lovely touch. Great little book with local tips and info in. Would recommend!

  • Lovely log cabin was an amazing weekend away very very relaxing, and hot tub was bigger than expected and lovely. Everything was very clean upon arrival, and overall a lovely stay 😁

    Lucy2019-12-23T00:00:00Z
  • Myself and my boyfriend absolutely loved staying at The Devon Lodge. The lodge itself is absolutely stunning and couldn’t fault it one bit. The hot tub is just an added bonus and even though we had rainy weather we still made the most out of it. The smart tv also came in handy of an evening when it was raining. The lodge has all the essentials you need and was nice to arrive to milk and Cava in the fridge as well as tea/coffee and chocolates . Sarah is only a message away if you need her and replies within minutes. Definitely going recommend the lodge to people I know and already looking at coming back next year! So glad I came across this find and thank you for having us, was a perfect get away. Xxx

Built in 2017 in a large garden with uninterrupted views, from both the cabin and decking, of the River Tamar. Ideal retreat for artists, writers, walkers and nature lovers. The garden is unsuitable for children as it is steep, well behaved dogs welcome provided they don't launch themselves into the river as the only access is by a ladder. There is strictly no fishing. Just enjoy a natural habitat, which is plentiful. You might see kingfishers, otters, cormorants, leaping fish, hope so!
The Ottery was originally built as an artist studio, but I decided the view was so beautiful I wanted to share it with other nature and peace lovers. It was completed in April 2017 and is situated at the end of my garden. It has wooden floors in the living areas and tile in the bathroom. It has decking on 2 sides with a table and chairs to enjoy nature. In the winter it is cosy but, it is a cabin, and does not have double glazing but gets warm quickly when the fire is lit, for which kiln dried wood is provided. Warmth can be maintained with an oil filled radiator, this to me is part of the romance of staying in a cabin in the winter. There is a condensation issue in the winter as it is warmer inside the building than out, but a handy tool and kitchen roll is provided so that the view is not obscured. The cabin has far reaching views up the river and is situated close to an ancient monument, Newbridge which is a 16th Century bridge. There are 4 fantastic walks available by walking out of the front door, no need to use the car! When the river is being lazy you can swim from the garden, but you need to ask me first please so I can judge if it is safe as the currents can be deceptive. It is close to Dartmoor and about 30 mins drive to the coast. It has no wifi or TV, but I have provided basic artist materials (please bring your own paper), board games, jigsaws and books and magazines. Mobile service is excellent for Vodafone and 02, but for other networks you might have to go on the roof to get a signal! If you need to contact someone, provided it is in the UK you are welcome to use my landline.
Gunnislake is a working village with 4 pubs, a post office, general stores, an excellent butchers and a hardware and gift shop. It is situated about 200 meters from the cabin, but up a very steep hill (good exercise) there is free parking for 2 hours in the village. Gunni has a train station and a regular bus service. The nearest town, Tavistock is 5 miles away and is a market town. Plymouth is the nearest city by car it takes about 30 mins and is also accessible by a scenic train journey or by bus. There are restaurants close by and food round here is excellent. There are no nightclubs! Villagers tend to be very friendly, and helpful.
  • Lovely place with amazing views, we had such a relaxing stay. Mel was warm and welcoming, responded quickly to queries and supplied nice vegetarian options for breakfast.

  • Great place, Mel is very nice and even bought food for the fridge!! The pictures don’t do the place justice, you are literally over the river, don’t hesitate you will love it

    Sara2020-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cosy cottage in great location. Log burner a bonus along with extra comfy bed. Can recommend you won't be disappointed.

  • Really lovely little cottage, very cosy and homely. Has everything that you could possibly need. The photos on the website don't do it justice. Very highly recommended

    Giles2019-12-20T00:00:00Z
  • Great little cottage nestled in the Tamar Valley on the Devon / Cornwall border. The accommodation is perfect for a couple; there's an open plan lounge / kitchen on the ground floor with stairs leading up to a spacious bedroom and bathroom. We went during pretty dire weather towards the end of November and so we were really grateful for the excellent central heating and log burner! Gunnislake itself is ten minutes from Tavistock where you'll find the usual supermarkets but there is also a small shop and 3 pubs in the village, plus a larger general store and chip shop a few minutes drive away in Drakewalls. Overall, a really good base if you want to explore this part of the southwest!

    James2019-11-22T00:00:00Z
  • A great cosy cottage with all you could need, great communication from Ashley and super easy check-in, would very much recommend!

  • I stayed at Berry Cottage for a few days and used as a base for walks on Dartmoor and visits to Tavistock. The cottage was clean, warm, cosy and quiet. Thanks to Ashley for excellent communication ahead of visit. Would stay again if possible.

Dog/pet friendly, set in an AONB & UNESCO World Heritage Site with breathtaking, expansive views over the stunning Tamar Valley & Dartmoor National Park. Long driveway with parking outside the front door of the property, fully fenced dog safe garden adjoining farmland.
Note: I have temporarily blocked all unbooked dates until November for The Signal Box and removed The Sidings from airbnb due to Government restrictions on travel during the current coronavirus pandemic. If you are a key worker or require accommodation for a legitimate reason, please message me and I will unblock dates to accommodate. For the time being for the good of our community in Cornwall and the rest of the country please stay home to stay safe, save lives and protect the NHS. I look forward to welcoming guests again in the future. Located in the grounds of a decommissioned railway station 'The Signal Box' is set in total privacy, well away from the station house, at the end of a long driveway that runs over the site of the old station tracks. Fully fenced (dog safe) private garden, fitted kitchen, shower room & sun deck. Electric gated main entrance and driveway to the property & private parking right outside the front door of The Signal Box. The Signal Box is a unique property which would appeal to railway enthusiasts and those who enjoy exploring all that the great location has to offer. The property is set in a UNESCO World Heritage Site (The Tamar Valley) and an AONB. The space has been set up with couples and their pet(s) in mind but there is space to bring small children from baby up to toddler age (if a cot or bed is needed you will need to bring that with you). There is no restriction on children rather a restriction on families/space so, if a mother, father, grandparent, auntie or uncle etc wishes to book the space with a related child of any age, that's absolutely fine too, a couple can be an adult and a related child in their care. The original station master's house, hay barn and a replica waiting room/ticket office are all still in place together with the platform and the site of the old tracks and railway bridge. As a point of interest, during the First World War, the station was the South West's main hay storage depot, from where hay was transported to London by rail to supplement the war effort in which horses played a vital role. PLEASE NOTE THAT IF THE SIGNAL BOX IS BOOKED FOR THE DATES YOU REQUIRE, IT HAS A STUNNING BRAND NEW SISTER CALLED 'THE SIDINGS' LISTED AT THE SAME PRICE AND ALSO AVAILABLE ON AIRBNB, PLEASE TAKE A LOOK.
The property is located in an AONB and UNESCO World Heritage Site and has many interesting mines in the local area including the Devon Consuls. The surrounding area has numerous places of interest, here are a few to whet your appetite: there are many walking trails close by: Kit Hill, Duchy owned Greenscombe Woods, Luckett - walk across a ford are all just a couple of minutes away and Tamar Trails and Dartmoor National Park are a few miles away. There are many beautiful National Trust properties in Devon and Cornwall including Cotehele which is less than 2 miles away, Pentille Castle is close by and featured in the television series 'Delicious', numerous quality pubs & restaurants, Tavistock with it's famous pannier market and, for Poldark fans, Bodmin Moor is close by (15 minutes away by car) and stunning Charlestown (just 31 minutes away by car). Port Isaac, of Doc Marin fame, is just 55 minutes drive away, St Mellion International golf resort is less than 10 minutes drive away and offers two golf courses, spa and gym. We have provided many maps, guides and leaflets in the property for guests to peruse at their leisure and we are also happy to provide recommendations if required. Please take time to look at my recommendations below including local events and dog friendly places, this will be updated regularly.
  • Jacqueline’s place is just perfect! The views are absolutely amazing, even when the weather isn’t great it’s still beautiful! Everything you could need is there, the card & Prosecco left for my husbands birthday was lovely & a very thoughtful touch! Wish we could have stayed longer, would definitely recommended the signal hut to anyone looking for a peaceful get away! Jacqueline is the perfect host!

  • Where to start ? A warm welcome and spotless, cosy accommodation equipped with all you needed. The views over the Tamar valley were wonderful and were shared with some very cute sheep. Well placed for local walks and exploring further. Jacqueline and Tim were the perfect hosts. We will be back !

  • A wonderful cabin with the most amazing view! I stayed for a couple of nights with my 6 year old son and our dog. There were some lovely walks close by, we particularly enjoyed Kit Hill, Cotehele and Cheesewring. But most of all we loved returning to our gorgeous cabin to book, relax and watch a movie in bed. Highly recommend

  • Perfect place ,cosy ,clean and great hospitality.

    Marie2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect place for a retreat in the most idlyic spot. The signal box is beautifully designed inside and out. We were really impressed with the quality of the furnishings. There is a luxurious feel to the place and great attention to the little details which made such a difference to our break. The photos cannot do it justice, the view is outstanding. Even in mid January, to wrap up warm and sit on the decking area to watch the sun come up is something we'll never forget. Jacqueline was the perfect host. Very warm and welcoming and gave us space but was nearby if we needed anything. We'll be back!

    Amanda2020-01-22T00:00:00Z
  • Where to start. My brothers and I booked this beautiful little hidden gem for our parents to celebrate their joint birthdays and what a special one it was for them... all because of The Signal Box, the views, the furry little friends (Francis, Boris and Donald) and last but not least Jaqueline. It was everything they could have asked for, even the small touches of flowers and a kindly written out birthday card for my parents. I could not fault The Signal box or its host in any way. Thank you so much again and I am definitely sure we'll be returning soon.

    Harriet2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • My wife and I had an absolutely magnificent stay. From the breathtaking views to Jacqueline’s fluffy friendly sheep everything was absolutely perfect. The Signal box was comfortable, peaceful and cosy. The signal box has everything you could possibly need from ironing boards, to cutlery, wifi, TV, books, board games, towels, shower gel and soaps and many other thoughtful touches. It is a 5 minute drive to a Tesco metro which is convenient. Very welcoming hosts who make you feel at home and value your privacy. Indeed this unique hideaway is a treasure and we look forward to one day staying again.

Further up stream is Morwellham Quay with its fantastic open air museum, Morwellham Quay has been awarded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO, the cultural arm of the UN, and is part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape. The National Trust have a number of properties nearby - Lanhydrock House, Trerice, Cotehele and Antony (used for Disney's Alice in Wonderland), Carnewas and Bedruthan Steps. Slightly further afield is the Eden Project in St Austell. Bodmin Jail built in 1778, notorious for its public executions by hanging, was the first jail to be built housing inmates in individual cells. The Jail closed in 1927 and is now a museum open to the public, which during the First World War housed the Crown Jewels and the Domesday Book.Dartmoor is one of our National Parks and covers 368 square miles of Devon, from tors and moorland, to valleys with streams and waterfalls, Dartmoor is rich with Neolithic and early Bronze age hut circles and standing stones, there are dozens of walks from easy strolls to demanding hikes. • Lovely little cottage in an ideal location for exploring Dartmoor. The local produce and cake that was left for our arrival where all very tasty. Cottage is equipped with everything you will need for your stay. The log burner was a lovely touch and kept us warm during the cold wet evenings.

  • Exactly as pictured, great welcome basket and host very keen to ensure everything was ready. A lovely area of Devon at the bottom of a lane which was ideal for a morning walk, with close access to lots of other lovely walks and Tavistock is a great place & not far away. We were able to take our 2 dogs, which is an added bonus. Space was thoughtfully decorated and you can see everything has been well thought through. Everything we needed was there.

  • Annie is a marvellous host, the welcome pack was most welcoming! The accommodation is lovely and warm, even in the middle of January. This really is a great bolt hole just a few minutes drive from Tavistock, we hope to be back.

  • Whilst it feels nicely off the beaten track within two minutes you are on the road into Tavistock. A great position for the town and the moors. We found the cottage spotlessly clean, very well appointed with a welcome basket of essentials including bread and eggs.....and brownies. The real bonus was our great hosts, Annie and Alistair who made us feel very comfortable. We will certainly return.

    Jacquelyn2019-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • We booked a 3 night stay and had a lovely time. The cottage is nicely decorated and very cosy, made extra special by the welcome hamper. It had everything we needed and was a great location for exploring Dartmoor and days out.

    Charlotte2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • I booked this stay for my parents. Annie’s communication was great. It was a lovely rural retreat for them away from the hustle and bustle and good all being on one level so no stairs etc to negotiate.

Our apartment is good for couples and solo travellers. Attached to our house, this is a small but very comfortable and modern space, with private entrance and patio garden. We are situated in a village within the Tamar Valley which is on the border between Devon and Cornwall. You have easy access to all areas of the Southwest, and particularly the parks of Dartmoor and Bodmin, the city of Plymouth and the market town of Tavistock. It is a great area to explore or just to relax.
Lower Metherell is a friendly little village with a 15th Century country pub less than 5 mins walk away from our home. Other pubs, a village shop and medieval church are nearby in Harrowbarrow and St Dominick.
  • The apartment is spotlessly clean, modern and comfortable. Location is ideal for walking around the local area, to include Cotehele House. There is a great pub within a couple of hundred yards, serving excellent food. The moors of Dartmoor are 30 minutes away.

  • A really lovely place to stay - a haven of peace and tranquility. It has many extra small touches that make it easy and comfortable. Clean and simple and warm. Amanda had already put on the heating for me so it would be warm for my arrival. The shower is fabulous, and the kitchen well equipped if you want to cook for yourself. And both Amanda and Stu willing to help out and advise where needed, but respectful of privacy too. Thank you both very much.

Everything you need is supplied - washing up liquid and cloths, soap, shower gel, flannels, towels, hairdryer, tea, coffee, sugar..... the list goes on. This is a great base for exploring and just a 2 minute walk to the carpenters arms pub for a drink to round off your day. Would 100% recommend this quiet accommodation; just perfect for a couple.

Kingfisher Pod at Milemead is ideal for those looking to get away from it all. It is located in a tranquil, west-facing spot surrounded by wildlife, directly overlooking a picturesque lake. Milemead is a coarse fishery, and fishing and tackle is available to guests. We are located 2 miles from the historic town of Tavistock, 3 miles from spectacular Dartmoor and from popular mountain bike trails, making this a great destination for walkers, runners and cyclists.
In the pod you will find details of recommended local places to eat, including takeaways, some of which offer a delivery service
  • The cabin is situated in a tranquil location and the only noise you hear is that of the wildlife. The cabin was immaculately clean and as were the ablutions. There was tea/coffee and fresh milk in the cabin for our arrival which was a nice touch after a long drive. We would definitely recommend staying here for a night or two !

Very friendly hosts- always happy to help me out and great facilities in the pod. Would recommend this for short or long stay as there is lots to do in the area, with maps etc in the pod.

  • We had a lovely time staying in Swallow Cottage. It rained every day we were there but the cottage was cosy and warm to come back to after wet and windy walks. The cottage was clean and well equipped and Katie made check in very easy (we weren't sure when we were going to arrive). The Tamar Trails are nearby and worth a look for a nice walk and views of the river. We also found the Fox Tor Cafe in Princetown really good. We would definitely return, hopefully when it's less wet!

  • Swallow Cottage is a great place to stay. Has everything needed for a self catering holiday. The cottage is decorated and furnished to a high standard. Under floor heating means the cottage is nice and cosy Also little personal touches like delicious home made mince pies waiting for our arrival Would highly recommend this property

    Noelene2019-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • Swallow Cottage really is such a wonderful find. It’s a really pretty building in a lovely location on a dairy farm, within an easy drive of Tavistock. Katie was a brilliant host, and made check in really easy (we arrived late, so she left lights on for us), and the Cottage was exceptionally clean, spacious and well-equipped. We even found mince pies and clotted cream on arrival, which was a lovely touch! Mini Moo and Ruby were also really welcoming hosts, and so friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, and hope to stay again soon!

    Jennifer2019-12-16T00:00:00Z
  • Great place, large space, very comfortable. Katie and family were very friendly and helpful. Close to Tavistock with a selection of great restaurants.

  • Beautiful cottage situated in a farm. The perfect spot to explore Cornwall and Devon by car. We enjoyed our stay very much and we hope to come back in the future. Bellissimo cottage tra la Cornovaglia e il Devon, pulizia perfetta e host molto gentile. Super stra consigliato!

    Jahmaira2019-04-27T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing place in the Devonshire country side. Immaculately clean and exceeded our expectations with regards to space. We were warmly greeted by Katie and she could not have been more helpful. Although on a working farm this did not hinder the relaxed atmosphere and vibes you get from Swallow. We loved meeting Mini Moo and Ruby the very friendly dogs who got on extremely well with our little dog. We loved the added touch of scones and fresh cream which were delicious and wouldn't hesitate staying here again. Thank you so much 🙂

  • Swallow cottage is beautiful. Beautifully done and lovely to stay in. A hidden gem that probably won’t stay hidden for long. We loved staying here and would highly recommend. It's an ideal base for walking, cycling wild swimming and getting away from it all, a true nature lovers paradise! We live in a house on the same site so will be on hand for any advice or assistance. It is ideal for a couple, a small family or group of friends happy to share. The kitchen is well-equipped and the dining table seats four people. There is no WiFi in The Old Smithy, but there is generally mobile signal and mobile data directly outside the front door. Please note: The last part of our track is unmade and we use 4x4 cars. We will be very happy to meet guests at a lay by half a mile away to bring them and their luggage to The Old Smithy and to return them at the end of the stay. There is parking by The Old Smithy for anyone brave enough to drive down all the way! It is advisable to bring any heavy items of shopping when you first arrive.

We are right by Drakes Trail National Cycle Route 27. The thriving market town of Tavistock is a 7 mile drive or 4 mile walk away. Tavistock has a vibrant Arts centre The Wharf, numerous coffee shops and restaurants and some lovely independent shops and galleries.
  • We had a great stay, Crispin and Caroline were great hosts! The accommodation was even better than we expected and the setting was fantastic - quiet and calming, rural but not far from civilisation. We had a great time and would love to re-visit one day.

  • The Old Smithy is an incredible place to stay! You're literally off the beaten track in some stunning Dartmoor woodland. Communication and check-in with Crispin is really easy and the place itself is so lovely inside. There's loads of thoughtful touches throughout and we had a fantastic stay. We hope to visit again in the summer!

    Stephen2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Getting to the place in itself is great experience. Beautiful location, beautiful and clean place.

    Pradeep2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Incredible peaceful location and a cosy base to explore from. Lovely warm hosts, Crispin went out of his way to make are stay as good as possible.

    Peter2020-01-13T00:00:00Z
  • The most beautiful setting hidden deep in the forest. The accommodation was beautifully done, super clean, and the little touches by the most wonderful hosts Crispin and Caroline was fantastic. We couldn’t fault how attentive Crispin and Caroline have been on messages, and ensuring we found the location without trouble. We went with our wobbly walking 1 year old baby and dog and it was a home away from home. My only advice for those without a car with a decent amount of clearance, or an SUV is to be my mindful the final 0.5 miles is a very rough track. We did it in our family Mini but there were a few close to the bottom moments. Crispin always offered to pick us up from the lay-by just before the track turns rough so this shouldn’t stop you. If you have kids they’d love the experience of being picked up in Crispin’s pick-up truck! Couldn’t recommend it more - we will definitely be rebooking!

Breakfast is provided: bread, milk, butter, jams and cereals.
  • The Orchard Barn, wow. We were coming to the area to celebrate our first wedding anniversary, we'd chosen the Orchard Barn because of its proximity to Dartmoor (short drive) and a local pub (10-15 mins walk - bring a torch!). Once we'd looked at the barn it was quite hard to look at anything else the same way, it has been recently refurbished to a very high standard. The barn was easy to find and 'check in' was straight forward, we were welcomed by Anne and her dog who live on the same site, the barn was very clean and tidy. Bread, butter, jams, cereals, porridge, and milk all ready to go for breakfast. I Imagine in summer it's beautiful outside, unfortunately on a wet and windy February weekend we were confined to the barn and walking out on Dartmoor, but daffodils everywhere brightened things up. The local pub (Royal Inn) is a lovely pub, good beer and great food and worth the walk back up the hill again, as I've already said it's less than a 5 minute drive or about a 10-15 minute walk, if you are walking I'd recommend bringing a torch as the roads are all single track with no paths. Proximity to Tavistock means you're never too far from a town centre, we ate at a little place called Church Lane (worth a visit), you can also find your supermarkets Morrisons (with petrol station), Tesco and Lidl, but try the local shops before heading into the supermarkets. Rachael the host was great and fast at responding to any messages I had and was very helpful. Thank you again for a great weekend, I would recommend this to anyone who just wants a quiet weekend away or as a base to do walks around Dartmoor or the local area. Fingers crossed we'll be back in the future. The Hoyles

  • This was a wonderful place to stay! We attended a wedding round the corner and it was lovely to have such a warm, cosy and clean venue to stay in when we got home- much better value than any local hotels and large enough space with many many thoughtful touches ( lovely bread / fresh flowers/ little jams ). Comfortable bed, amazing shower and all amenites you would need!

  • We had the most wonderful stay in this beautifully remodelled barn, absolutely perfect! Rachel, Ann and Dean thought of everything. The accommodations were spacious with lovely outdoor areas to relax and wander. The kitchen was incredibly well equipped and stocked with essentials for cooking and everything one would need for breakfast - cereals, coffee, tea, etc. Plus there were also thoughtful touches such as fresh bread, delicious jams, milk and butter. Ann was always available if needed and gave us great suggestions for places to eat and visit. We really enjoyed walking down to the local pub, and the Cornish Arms in Tavistock was an unexpected treat. Most of all though, we enjoyed getting to meet the locals a little during our stay. Everyone was so friendly and open to helping with suggestions or just a chat. Meeting local people when we travel is always very special and in our minds makes all the difference in the world. This area of England is definitely worth a visit and a stay at The Orchard Barn a must!

  • This place is the perfect countryside getaway. The cottage is stylish and comfortable. Jams, cereals, milk, and bread are provided and are great extra touches. It immediately felt like a home away from home for us. We were planning to eat out but ended up eating in on both nights because we loved the space so much! The area is beautiful. Thank you for making our bank holiday weekend so special!

  • Just Wow!! You must stay here. It is in a quiet rural location surrounded by beautiful countryside and despite it being adjacent to another property it felt completely private. The cottage is stunning inside and out and has plenty of room inside and stylish decor. The little touches of breakfast and tea, coffee, milk and bread (and much more) makes it feel like you are at home instantly and it feels like you are truly welcome and spoilt as a guest. There are many great places to visit locally such as Looe and Plymouth and lots to do such a bike trail centres and walks and national trust centres. We cant wait to go again and were very sad to leave after an amazing holiday there. One of my favourite places I have stayed at!!!
