My place is close to the beach. You’ll love my place because of the outdoors space. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, families (with kids), and furry friends (pets).

  • We loved our stay at Andrina’s huts. She was very accommodating and friendly. Couldn’t fault our stay, would highly recommend.

  • Excellent hospitality, super cosy place. Bbq hut was excellent to use in the freezing cold and the sauna an absolute treat and the hot tub is a nice touch. Thank you Andrina 😀

  • Great little spot along the NC500. Cute, comfy hut with everything you need, and a separate kitchen/bathroom area. Would be a great place for a group of friends to hire out both huts and spend a weekend! Loved the hot tub, although we had a little trouble keeping it warm, but the hosts helped us out. Would recommend.

  • Peaceful, relaxing place excellent hosts

  • This is our second time visiting Andrina at the huts. We didn’t think it was possible to beat our first stay 2 years ago but were excited to see the changes that had been made. This time we decided to spend Christmas up there instead of new year and we couldn’t have been happier with our decision. We were greeted with open arms and made to feel so welcome, Andrina has thought of absolutely everything and the facilities are amazing. This time we were able to enjoy the hot tub on Christmas Eve night which was just fantastic. We drank whiskey and gazed at the stars for hours. On Christmas Day we were able to enjoy the incredible views from the comfort of the NEW sauna!!! Totally out of this world. A massive thanks to all who worked hard to fuel these luxury extras. The team have been working so hard together and the space is truly looking fantastic. Exciting to see the further developments when we return later in 2020!

    Christina2019-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay here. The drive up the A9 was beautiful and this spot gave great access to other gems. The hot tub was a real draw (do make sure you listen to the advise and cool it down because it’s HOT) and we had a really comfy nights sleep. They had just had a sauna delivered that wasn’t quite ready to use but will be soon - I fully recommend staying here 👍🏻

  • Very comfortable stay and excellent breakfast. Distillery is literally a stones throw away and town is a short walk or drive with full amenities. We appreciated the helpful tips for driving routes and local attractions.

  • We had a delightful stay in this warm and cosy farmhouse. Breakfast was delicious and nothing was too much trouble for Victoria, she was an excellent and accommodating host. We were delighted to celebrate our engagement with Victoria and some other lovely guests from the US. We would recommend this stay to anyone wanting to explore the highlands and enjoy fire in the evenings.

  • Beautiful place just next to the Clynelish and Brora distilleries (the latter will reopen in 2020). The house still carries the charm of the old mansion days when one of the previous distillery owners used to call it his home. Delicious breakfast is served in a spacious dining room with sea view. Guests can also use a salon with fireplace and enjoy a glass of Clynelish whisky or local gin from the bar there. I highly recommend this place!

A pleasant room and a help-yourself breakfast in our family home in a lovely setting next to a working water mill in the coastal village of Golspie.
We have a room available on a hostel-style basis in our friendly Scottish / Kiwi home. The Mill House is right on the edge of the village of Golspie in the Highlands of Scotland, only 150 metres from the main road (A9), but in a very tranquil and beautiful spot. The room has a comfortable double bed and plenty of storage. There's a shared bathroom and a comfortable family sitting room with a log burner. It's a family home, pleasant but not fancy, indeed a bit scruffy in places. We have two very small children who are generally pretty well-behaved but they do scatter toys round the place and might break into song over breakfast. There's plenty of space for storing bikes and drying boots and waterproofs. The house is in a lovely setting, next to a working water mill, built in the 1860's, which we run (find Golspie Mill online to find out more ). We invite you to help yourself to breakfast - we offer Golspie Mill porridge, cereal, homemade bread when time permits, fruit, yogurt, tea, coffee etc or if you prefer you're welcome to use the kitchen to cook your own breakfast. We're also happy to point you in the direction of nice places to eat out locally.
Golspie is a small coastal village, between the sea and the hills. It's an hours drive from Inverness and an hours drive from the spectacular north coast. The area is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, with great cycling on quiet roads, an excellent mountain bike track, lovely walks along the shore and through the woods. The popular Lands End - John o Groats cycle route passes the top of the road (150 metres from the house). The Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve is a couple miles down the road and is a lovely place to watch wading birds on the mudflats or look for seals at low tide. Nearby are nice beaches, good places to surf and kayak and we're only 30 minutes from some great hills. Royal Dornoch, Golspie and Brora golf courses are all within very easy reach and welcome visitors. In Golspie, there is a handful of shops, including a small supermarket, a chemist and an excellent hardware/gift store. Bigger shops are in Tain, a 25 minute drive away, where you can also visit the Glemorangie Distillery.
  • Staying at Becky's place is really comforting. It is a nice and warm family home and she is great host. We have slept very well in the bed and the room was also very comfortable. Becky has some great reccomendations for places to see or to grab a bite. We have experienced the real highlands here, it was a great weekend.

    Thalita2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Wow, this is an amazing stay. Large room, free breakfast, super friendly family, and the aforementioned tour of the mill. Great location too for walks (sea and castle) and a strong sense of the highlands topography. One of the most hospitality stays I've ever had on air b and b😊

    Claire2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • This is indeed the home of a family of superhosts. The hosts are lovely and friendly and I would recommend their home to anyone with a particular love of historic sites too. The room is large and the bed comfortable. The wifi was great. Lots of local knowledge happily shared and guests are truly welcomed in to the family. I look forward to going back!

    Linsey2019-12-04T00:00:00Z
  • Exceptional listing with hosts to match. Authentic, restored historic mill and house. Comfortable large room. Good wi-fi. Generous and friendly welcome from Bob and Becky. Exceptional value, highly recommended.

  • After arriving in Edinburgh, Golspie was our first destination of a 5-day-roundtrip through Scotland. In this Airbnb, you will get a very friendly family, a hot cup of tea, hopefully a tour through the unique watermill, a tidy and comfy bedroom and, most importantly, a very good talk. Take your time, sit at their table and learn some thing about life in Scotland, you will "be" in their life for a short time - which we liked very much. We didn't plan all our stops and they were very helpful. Thank you for this wonderful start of our breathtaking tour. We even got the flour through customs, but not without questions... ;-)

    Philipp2019-10-11T00:00:00Z
  • A super spot nearby to Inverness and lovely people.

    Michele2019-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • What a beautiful place to stay. We saw a badger running along the road and I was buzzing because an owl flew right across the road in front of our car!! A great family home where we were made very welcome by Becky and Bob. Comfortable bed in a big room and we loved the fairy lights around the ceiling, might even copy the idea! 😊 We were delighted when Bob offered to show us around the mill on the day of our departure and I got some super photo's.

    Shirley2019-10-06T00:00:00Z

This unique traditional fishermans cottage situated at the picturesque harbour in the seaside village of Helmsdale has been elegantly upgraded to create an idyllic Highland home placed on the A9 and tourist route NC500. Tarbat View is a well proportioned 2 double bedroom cottage with many original features and has high ceilings not usually seen in a cottage. Helmsdale is a picture postcard village on the north east coast of Sutherland on the A9 and along the NC500 route. The village has amenities such as grocery store, library, 9-hole golf course, Timespan museum and local history archive, pubs, restaurants and medical centre all within walking distance from the cottage. A friendly and active community, the area is renowned for its beautiful scenery, the quality of fishing and availability of fresh seafood and crabs from the local fishing boats makes Helmsdale a popular holiday location.
  • A lovely cottage, in a great location in a lovely village with lovely views out to sea. Very comfortable, clean and warm, with lots of nice thoughtful touches that you appreciate when you are away on holiday. A great base to travel out from on days trips to the North, West or South.

Large room with open beams and large window. shower en-suite bathroom and quiet room at the back of the house discreet entrance from back garden and access to kitchen living room and dinning room downstairs. There is a washing machine available.
Very beatiful room very large with ensuite which has a power shower. Open beams.
Fresh air, fantastic safe environment, true Scottish Highlands. Access to Orkney, West Coast, Wick, John O Groats. Hill walking and river walks which are fantastic take a drive up the Strath for some drop dead scenery . rent a gold mining pan and go up the river hunt for hold .. full instructions.. with the pan from the shop at the harbour ! Great for kids and adults alike .. tradition is for the men of the village to pan for gold all there lives and create the first daughters wedding ring from the gold they find .. give it a go . History The first written reference to the people of this area, at the end of the first century AD comes from the Roman historian Tacitus, who described the people as tall, red headed men who fought bravely with long swords and round shields. St Ninian came here about 390 AD and preached at Navidale. Where the old church yard now stands there was a chapel which was burned down during the Reformation in 1556. Helmsdale came under the Parish of Kildonan which gets its name from the pictich word Kil or Cill or Cell, this meaning the cell of St Donan, patron saint of the Strath, from 580 AD. Christianity, however, came under attack in the 9th century when the Vikings began their raids into the North of Scotland. Tharfin the Great conquered Scotland down to the Moray Firth, and certain cairns and standing stones are said to mark the sites of many ferocious and bloody battles. It was at Helmsdale (from the Norse Hjalmundal Dale of the Helmet) that a great battle took place between two Nors chiefs Swein and Olvir Rosta. Swein won a great victory and Olvir's men retreated to some houses which were burned with all their inmates. Olvir escaped by crossing the Helmsdale river and was not heard again. Swein and his men committed many ravages in Sutherland before returning to their ships. As the Vikings mixed with the native population, the clan system evolved and the way of life changed little from century to century. There were periods of blood and strife mainly caused by lust for land and cattle. The chieftain had power of pit and gallows over all men and yet was regarded by his clansmen as protector and father figure. Helmsdale Castle The Couper Park is the site where the Helmsdale Castle once stood. Although, alas it became a rapidly crumbling ruin and was completely demolished in the early 1970s to make way for the new A9 road bridge over the Helmsdale River.

The room itself was very cozy — I haven’t had that good of a sleep in a while! Kitchen was fully equipped (coffee and French press, too). Very happy with the stay. Thank you!

Lovely warm spacious home in the heart of the Helmsdale Village. Close to all local amenities - shops, restaurants, pubs and Cafe. Lovely sights within a stones throw - the harbour, the famous Helmsdale River, golf course and many walks for all fitness abilities. Comfortable well equipped accommodation for families, groups, couples or individuals. An ideal stopover on the North Coast 500 route for weary travellers to relax and unwind in a peaceful location.
Historic house built in the early 1900's and fully modernised. I've tried to keep it as true to original as possible. Please bear in mind there is only 1 bathroom as en-suites weren't the rage when this was built! However, the shower pressure is excellent. The kitchen is large and boasts an 8 burner range cooker and American fridge freezer. Please cook or bake to your hearts content. There is super fast fibre broadband WiFi throughout the property. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video on some of the TVs.
Helmsdale is a small friendly village set in a peaceful location with stunning views. There’s plenty to see and do - beach walks, gold panning, fishing, shooting, mountain and trail walks and a lot of wildlife around too. Helmsdale is a Sutherland coastal village steeped in history and with a strong maritime tradition. The village boasts a good level of local amenities for both visitors and residents. The area has an association with Viking history and attracts a great many tourists. The village is renowned for its gold panning at Kildonan and the Timespan visitor attraction depicts the regions diverse history.  The village has approximately 750 inhabitants and is one of the main centres of population in Sutherland. It also has an excellent links golf course and is in easy reach of the famous course at Royal Dornoch which lies to the south. The region is also renowned for its whisky production, with distilleries in Brora, Wick and Tain.  Slightly further afield the Falls of Shin and Dunrobin Castle provide an interesting day out. Touring and genealogy are other favourite pastimes, together with the prospect to visit nearby Scottish castles and other historic sites. These attractions combined with the varied natural scenic beauty of the surrounding area make it highly popular with a wide range of visitors and tourists. For the outdoor enthusiast the Highlands of Scotland are famous for spectacular scenery and rugged mountains, a reputation which is comfortably upheld by Helmsdale. The wonderful un-spoilt scenery of the famous coastline and surrounding hills combine to make this a most attractive area.  For walkers the beautiful Sutherland terrain offers varied degrees of challenge from the more leisurely hillwalking to more stretching mountaineering. A wide range of birdlife attracts the ornithologist and the area has a huge appeal to the naturalist. The local rivers appeal to large numbers of sports fishermen looking to net trout or salmon.

My self catering flat stands in my family’s Sutherland croft, on a hill approximately 153 metres above sea level. The property is compact and cosy, with electric central heating, and it is my priority that visitors have everything they need for a comfortable stay. The lounge/kitchen area is fully equipped with hob, oven, microwave, toaster, steamer, fridge, washing machine, dishwasher, pots, crockery, cutlery, table and chairs, Sky TV, Wi-Fi being installed, comfortable sofa-bed and armchair. The bedroom has a kingsize bed, and ample wardrobe storage. For the shower and washbasin, I have provided Arran Aromatics lovely hand- and body-wash products to relax and soothe you. Because this is a highland home, I have kept a certain sense of tradition in the decor, with a variety of plaid fabrics, and some old photographs and objects which I hope you will enjoy looking at. You may browse a selection of books by a diversity of Scottish authors. The views are amazing. From the front windows, the Moray Firth in all its moods leads the eye south west to the distant Cairngorms, or the vast open horizon of the North Sea. On the other sides, the views are framed by some of the oldest hills in Europe. Once mighty Alps, the passage of time and ice ages have worn these to gentler slopes of fractured volcanic rock. Thinly coated in peat and heather, they are the very private habitat of such fauna as grouse, stoat, and hare, and the equally public domain of seasonally grazing sheep, cattle and growing numbers of red and roe deer. You might simply be a bird of passage, staying briefly here while travelling to or from the Northern isles of Orkney and Shetland, or experiencing the wonderful North Coast 500 route. On the other hand, you might want to make this your base for a while, as you explore the area known as the ‘Common Grazings’ - 1011 hectares of wild hillsides, which reach almost to my back door. With wildlife spotting, fishing for tasty little brown trout in a nearby burn, finding examples of iron age archaeology, or simply strolling through the glorious spaciousness, where you’ll rarely encounter another human being, you might not want to travel much further during your entire stay, than down to the village of Helmsdale for supplies, souvenirs or eating out. Being only about half a mile from the A9, it is also easy to base yourself here, and travel up the Strath of Kildonan to the North Coast, follow the East Coast to John O’ Groats, or take a day trip across to Ullapool and the West. Close to hand, Helmsdale village (3 minutes away by car, 20 on foot) has a heritage centre (Timespan) with a riverside cafe. On the main street visitors will further find two restaurants, a takeaway, two bars, a mini market, a gift shop and an old-fashioned ironmonger’s store. Helmsdale also offers golf, river and sea fishing opportunities. Visitors may travel here by car, bike, train, bus or, of course, on foot! I can arrange collection from the train station or bus stop. If you plan driving here in the winter months, I strongly recommend winter tyres. My driveway is rather rough, though everyone seems to manage, driving carefully. No matter when you plan to visit, remember this really IS the great outdoors, so bring weatherproof clothing and footwear, and midge/tick repellant in the summer. I am not a professional linguist, but I speak some French, Italian, German and Polish. I look forward to welcoming you to The Stroops!

We had a lovely stay, the room was full of little details and very comfortable. The breakfast was excelent and you can choose from a wide variety of options. Caroline is a lovely host and we had some great chats with her. She gave us great tips and ideas of what we could do in the area. We would absolutely recommend it

This comfortable, semi-detached house is in a peaceful location in the village of Brora. It's close to the beach, the golf course, and the harbour. The house is set in a large garden and makes a great base for exploring the area.
This is a pleasant, comfortable house set in a large garden. Accommodation is in two double bedrooms and a sofa bed in the sitting room.
Brora is a small coastal village, just over an hours drive from Inverness and an hours drive from the spectacular north coast. This is a great place to unwind - there's a lovely beach, pleasant walks by the river, quiet back roads, and three golf courses within easy reach, all welcoming visitors. The Clynelish Distillery is on the edge of the village and welcomes visitors year round. Nearby are nice beaches, good places to surf and kayak and we're only 30 minutes from some great hills. In Brora, there is a handful of shops, including a small supermarket. Bigger shops are in Tain, a 25 minute drive away, where you can also visit the Glemorangie Distillery.

Relaxing and comfortable crofters cottage on the Helmsdale strath, great view, wildlife and walks or just relax by the fire. Comfortable accommodation for families, couples or individuals.
The cottage is in an idilic setting on the Helmsdale strath, close to the village of Helmsdale and the renowned north coast 500 (NC500) tourist route.
It’s a fairly remote but close knit community in the far north and pretty much everyone is friendly. There’s plenty to see and do in the area, beach walks, gold panning, fishing, shooting, mountain and trail walks and a lot of wildlife around too
  • This is a beautiful getaway if you want to be in a stunning place away from everything. We went to write and needed a space with no distractions as well as a nice break for our dog. We only just adopted her after fostering for 5 months and the River Helmsdale was a brilliant place to let her off lead for the first time. She is normally reactive on the lead but we did meet one or two dogs that she was extremely friendly with. We are very grateful to have had the opportunity to test this with her and it made our stay very relaxing to have a relaxed dog. Nearby we visited Brora beach a few times and took advantage of the Co-Op because the Spar in Helmsdale is very expensive and limited on options. The garden was nothing special, more of a hill in the back with short stone walls so do not come here relying on having a garden but there are brilliant places to walk. We stayed warm with the heaters but it does make the house stuffy and dry so I recommend taking some hot water bottles so you do not need to rely on the heating too much :)

    Leanne2019-11-02T00:00:00Z
  • A very cosy crofters cottage with everything you will need. The kitchen is small but well appointed and has everything needed to cook meals etc. The bed in the master bedroom is super comfy! The TV does not access terrestrial TV but does have a DVD player and an excellent selection of DVDs. If you are taking a dog, there is no secure garden/area therefore you would need to keep them on a lead if they don't recall. Overall a very comfortable stay in a lovely area and we would stay again.

It was an ideal place to break the journey because we got off the ferry at Gills Bay about 6pm and reached Kathleen's in a couple of hours. Kathleen's house is just off the A9 and has spectacular views. Kathleen welcomed us warmly. Our room was huge with amazing views of the sea, possibly the most comfortable bed I have ever slept and an en-suite shower room. Everything was absolutely spotless. Kathleen was friendly and open and obviously enjoyed being a host - we felt nothing was too much trouble and she put a lot of work into preparing meticulously for her guests.

  • A really special place. Large rooms, a pretty garden and a wonderful location.

    Akiko2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • We almost never write reviews but we'll make an exception here. We had no complaints at all about the accommodation, and in spring and summer the garden is a delightful bonus. It's only a very short stroll to the shops, pubs, café, restaurant and the small supermarket. Staying on a railway station is great fun - we did this once before elsewhere in Scotland. The trains are quiet and the first one isn't until 8am anyway. You can barely hear them even when sitting in the lounge room which is close to them. We are retired Australians who have travelled widely and have been travelling around Scotland for 9 months, so we have seen many types of accommodation. This is a great community initiative to preserve and use a delightful old building.

  • We had A lovely stay at the station. Super information prior to our arrival. 8 seniors can be comfortable there. Fine walks in the village and in the hills. Nice dining and living rooms. Highly recommended by us all.  Kind regards Jens and 7 more from Denmark

  • It's a very good experience : children waited for train. There isn't train in the night than, it's perfect. When we were there, we went until Chanonry point to watch Dolphin : we were on the beach !

    Pascal2017-08-01T00:00:00Z
  • This is a quirky little self-catering house. You are literally part of the station, with trains and people coming and going (not many though!!). It's like being part of the Railway Children!! The accommodation is well thought out, and we'll maintained, as is the little private garden. A great find in an interesting part of Scotland.

    Julie2017-07-22T00:00:00Z
  • This is such a wonderful gem! We stayed for two nights and loved the comfy atmosphere of the house. It has plenty of space and it's fun watching the trains go by. People in the village are super friendly - it was fun to walk down to one of the two pubs in town for a drink. There isn't much to do in the town itself but this house is nevertheless a perfect place for a quiet getaway. There is a small grocery store in town so you can also buy your food there! I would definitely recommend!

Beautifully decorated, large, airy room with a full-size bathroom which was an added bonus. Lovely breakfast the next day too. We stayed in a number of B&Bs throughout our trip on the NC500 and I think this was my favourite. Jacqui was a lovely, friendly host and communication from start to finish was perfect!

  • A room inside a little house with a little dated decor but the kindness and hospitality of the landlady make everything pass in the background. The Tall Pines Yurt has been lovingly built within the grounds of our home on the hill at Gartymore, Helmsdale, which is on the North Coast 500 route. It comprises a double bed, bed-settee, log burner, cooking area, toilet, shower, private garden with BBQ and outside furniture and a private parking area. We look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful location which has stunning views over the Moray Firth.
Your stay will be a unique experience as this is a traditional Mongolian dwelling with double layers of insulation and a log burning stove to keep you warm and cosy. The yurt has its own private garden, with seating and BBQ area. There is also a bistro table and two chairs on the decked veranda.
We live on the hill overlooking the Moray Firth. It is a very quiet, rural area with sheep and cattle in the fields in front of our property. There are plenty of places to walk nearby and if you are lucky you may even spot a few deer. At the bottom of the hill you will be able to access the beach and see the seals in the water. There is a path there which takes you into the village via the river estuary.
  • First time ever staying in a yurt - and would do so again! So quaint and surprisingly spacious for me and my brother. The fire was lit once we returned from the town and was so toasty warm. All the equipment to cook for yourself if you wanted. The bathroom was set up beautifully. Would recommend as an alternative accomodation 😃

  • Our stay in the yurt was fantastic! Jackie and Paul were excellent hosts and out kids loved that their dogs (Max & Holly) and chickens regularly checked in on us. The yurt itself is extremely comfortable and everything you would need is provided. The location overlooks Helmsdale with great views out over the north sea. We will definitely be back.

  • This place is lovely. Quirky and romantic with sweet extra touches. We enjoyed the dogs visiting and the chickens. It’s really quiet except for the crashing of the waves which just add to the magic of the place.

  • Lovely house and rooms. So nice to arrive to an open fire all cosy and warm. Tasteful decoration and very clean throughout. Easy to find central location yet nice and quiet. Plenty of parking. • We absolutely loved staying at Susan's place, couldn't have asked for a better place to spend our five days explore the surrounding area. Would highly recommend Susan's place to anyone and we will most definitely be staying here again if we find ourself back in the area. Thank you for everything Susan!!

  • This is a lovely, cosy cottage with amazing views and a little enclosed garden. The cottage had everything we needed to be warm and comfortable. The shower was hot, the bed comfortable and the wifi connection was excellent. The walks round the cottage are also lovely and are on a quiet road which was great for our dog. Lastly, thanks for the milk, chocolates and shortbread...a very thoughtful touch which we enjoyed with a coffee when we first arrived. We will definately recommend the cottage to our friends and family.

Firth View is a 150-yr old terraced cottage near THE SEA & Brora's beautiful mile-long BEACH as well as BRORA's links GOLF COURSE, where it's fairly easy to get a tee-off time. Other nearby courses are Golspie & ROYAL DORNOCH. Also close are LOCH BRORA & THE MOUNTAINS. DUNROBIN CASTLE is a 5-minute drive south & CLYNELISH WHISKY DISTILLERY a 2-minute drive north! Firth View is ideal for couples, solo and/or business travellers, & families. The bathroom is downstairs. Non-smokers only, please.
Firth View (has fibre-optic internet!) is close to THE SEA (300m), the harbour (200m!), LOCH BRORA (4 miles), Brora's beautiful mile-long BEACH (1/2 mile), and the BRORA GOLF COURSE (same direction; 1/2 mile); which is a highly rated links designed by James Braid in 1923. It is still challenging to all standards, it is relatively easy for a visitor to get a tee-off time and the club atmosphere is relaxed. Other lovely links courses are Golspie (10 mins south) and famous ROYAL DORNOCH, formed in 1877, is only 20 mins away by car. DUNROBIN CASTLE (5 miles south) is the historic seat of the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland and hosts many activities including an impressive Falconry display. CLYNELISH WHISKY DISTILLERY (1.5 miles) One of the town's attractions that is well worth visiting; produces a fine, peaty single malt (that makes up most of Johnny Walker Black Label). CLYNE HERITAGE SOCIETY is a very active heritage group with archaeological digs ongoing around Brora. The area has a long industrial past, e.g. coal mining, salt panning, tweed production, distilling, electricity generation etc., and, of course, there's always been crofting and fishing. The village street lights were powered by the Brora Electricity Supply Company as early as 1913, fully 35 years before the arrival of mains electricity and soon the village acquired the name ‘the Electric City’. 5000 years before any of this were the NEOLITHIC SETTLERS; a good example of one of their BURIAL CHAMBERED CAIRNS is found on the shore of Loch Brora. BRONZE AND IRON AGE people have left their marks all over the area. Their characteristic ROUNDHOUSES (hut circles) are dotted around the landscape and many more remain to be discovered. There are 7 BROCHS dating from around 600BC to 100AD, which are uniquely found in the Highlands and Islands, but are concentrated in Caithness and East Sutherland. These familiar stone-built towers are somewhat enigmatic structures, as experts are still undecided as to their purpose – defensive or pure status! You’ll love Firth View because of the location (between the sea and the mountains and between Inverness and John-o'-Groats!), the ambiance (very cosy little stone cottage with everything you need for a comfortable stay), the neighbourhood (equi-distant between the sea and the centre of the village with it's small but well-stocked Co-op supermarket), the people (very friendly and helpful) but mostly the outdoors; the beautiful Brora Countryside and Seaside features every imaginable habitat, so a wide variety of wildlife can be seen, including OTTERS (on the River Brora seen anywhere between harbour mouth and loch) and SEALS (best views are on Brora beach where they regularly relax in their inimitable way). MORAY FIRTH BOTTLENOSE DOLPHINS can also be seen making their way along the coast, often very close to the beach in small groups. Birds; Brora Beach displays a variety of ducks and waders, the species varying with the season including MALLARD, GOLDENEYE, LONGTAILED DUCK AND EIDER. The ARCTIC TERN is also a visitor and has become the emblem of Brora Golf. Loch Brora has Goldeneye and other ducks, CURLEW, REDSHANK, OYSTERCATCHER AND LAPWING. BUZZARDS are likely, and with luck GOLDEN EAGLE may be seen in winter. Loch Fleet forms part of a well-known nature reserve with a wealth of seaducks and waders. Here one may chance to see OSPREY fishing. WILDCATS (in local woods and in the hills, if you're lucky!) Deer; ROE DEER are widespread and may be seen wherever there is cover, RED DEER can commonly be seen on the hills around Loch Brora and Glen Loth. Other Mammals; HEDGEHOG, MOLES, SHREWS, VOLES, HOUSE and WOOD MICE, FOX, STOAT, WEASEL, RABBIT are all common. BROWN HARES are found on farmland and MOUNTAIN HARE on heather moorland. LONG EARED BATS in sheltered areas and GOATS are often to be seen on the Morvich Rock near Rogart. ACTIVITIES beyond wildlife spotting include: HORSE RIDING (Star Stables are in Brora and Highlands Unbridled are 20 miles down the coast, in Tain). WALKING/HIKING (endless possibilities; from sea trails and mountain hikes to gentle loch-side strolls), FISHING (from Sea Angling, loch fishing to Salmon and Sea Trout Fishing), local MOUNTAIN BIKING (run by Highland Wildcats in nearby Golspie, which features the longest descent in the UK from the summit of Ben Bhraggie - 1300' to sea-level - and the longest technical singletrack climb. There's a BOWLING AND TENNIS CLUB less than 1/2 mile away. Whatever the time of day or year there is a very good chance of seeing a group of enthusiasts out on the waves near the harbour entrance, SURFING and/or SWIMMING. When particularly high, the waves actually prevent the smaller fishing boats from leaving the harbour but do make great surf for sport! Nearest indoor pool is at the ROYAL MARINE HOTEL (1/2 mile) and the larger Sutherland Swimming Pool Complex is just 5 miles away in Golspie. The best beach with safe swimming is the mile or so along from the north of the Brora River, where KITE FLYING also seems to be popular.
A small village halfway between Inverness and John O'Groats that offers everything you might need right there on your doorstep, with great transport links and yet from where it's very easy to find peace and solitude amongst the mountains, valleys and beautiful coastline.

  • Brilliant cozy house, in a great location. One of the best parts of the world. Jonathan is a great host and goes out of his way to make sure your trip is comfortable. The house is spotlessly clean, wood is always available, short walk to co-op, train station and beach. Couldn't ask for anything better. Our 6th visit i think and we will be back.

  • I can't recommend Jonathan's place highly enough. Brora is a lovely town with some superb attractions in the vicinity whether you like outdoor activities or historical sites. Communication was friendly and warm throughout. The place is looked after by the next door neighbour, Shirley, who was wonderfully welcoming and left us some shortbread and milk on arrival. The place is cosy and comfortable and very close to the sea. We had a great time here at New Year's for a very reasonable price.

  • Firth View is a wonderful home away from home. You will be surrounded by interesting books and magazines. The kitchen is cosy but well equipped. The conservatory is a lovely space. We were very comfortable there. Had a good dinner at the Sutherland Inn. Very friendly service and good food. We would definitely return!!

    Sarah2019-12-24T00:00:00Z
  • Cosy space in the middle of Brora. We had parking right outside and a co-op 2 mins away made for a great base for the weekend.
