Places to stay in Eskdale Green
We look forward to welcoming you to enjoy the secluded Western Lakes' wild, coastal beauty... It's a special corner of the world-with Lewis Carroll having found inspiration for Alice's Wonderland here, ideally placed Scafell ascent route at Wasdale Head, all packaged in a 180 year old, off grid, converted coach house. Open plan yet cozy; quirky & unique - a welcoming home for relaxing and unwinding with family and friends in front of the fire with books and board games aplenty!
Welcome to Volcano! Literary & WWII history, world renowned walks, pubs, tea rooms, miniature steam railway, and kindness of strangers: visiting the Western Lakes is like stepping back in time. Plenty of windows and 8 foot ceilings lend themselves to a feeling of openness, whilst its location in a small group of neighbours on a shared, private courtyard amongst woodland, with a multifuel stove (i.e. not the instant 'flick for heat' of central heating, but the satisfaction of a fire well built and tended!), make for a welcoming retreat in Summer or Winter. Volcano's a unique and quirky cottage; and we've put lots of detail about it throughout this listing and in the House Rules. Please have a good read through, including the 'Other Things to Note' section, to help set the magical mood, and feel free to ask any questions you may have. What our family, friends and Guests love... "No wifi, no TV, unique, tranquil, cozy sofas, board games, log burner, big bath, comfy beds, amazing shower, morning mountain views, lovely neighbours, lots of books, imaginative decor, a house with a personality, great information folder with clear instructions." We enjoy adding to our collections, and rearranging furniture to change up the look a bit. The photographs show this in action; so, the cottage will have the feel of the photos, but everything mightn't be exactly where it has been photographed as being, if something even better for the space has come along in the meantime :-) 'OFF GRID' The 'off grid-ness' relates to all the ways that matter; and all the ways that don't: it's a wonderfully workable home. Off grid refers to... * The lack of internet or wifi in the cottage, and the reduced/non existent mobile phone reception inside the house (there's a secret windowsill where you can pick it up, and which we'll gladly tell you: but, interestingly, is rarely asked for!). * There's no traditional central heating (although keeping warm is straightforward with the multifuel stove plus other heating sources in the cottage and we welcome happy guests in all seasons), no live TV, an immersion heater for hot water, range oven which uses calor gas rather than mains gas (although you'd never know it), a septic tank, an unadopted track for access - with a few hearty potholes... ...and generally just off-grid from the speed and pressures of everyday life. Mainly it's a fun, restorative way in which to reconnect to the Lakeland landscape and each other, and we get a lot of guests thanking us for not having wifi in place, but books and board games instead. It's a working home, rather than a show home: a friendly spider will inevitably have built a web in the ten minutes before your arrival, somewhere could always do with a lick of paint, and the moles sometimes pop through the lawn. It means it's wonderfully practical for muddy wellies, kids and families; with nothing too precious, where relaxing is the order of the day. KEEPING WARM & HOT WATER In addition to the big multifuel stove in the living room, we also have freestanding oil heaters in each room, plinth fan heaters in the kitchen, and a large immersion heater to take care of hot water provision in the kitchen and bathroom (although not the radiators) should you be too worn out after your Lake District explorations to make a fire on any given evening before settling into a long bath :-) REMOTENESS Volcano is remote enough that your nearest chain supermarket is half an hour's drive away, but well serviced and connected, with locally provisioned shops, pubs, restaurants and a good road system. We have neighbours on either side, who we share the front courtyard with; and are wrapped around with fields and woodland; all a short track away from the 'main' road which will link you to the rest of the Western Lakes (and beyond...!) The Airbnb Itinerary and our Welcome Pack contains lots of information on smaller local shops (less than 3 minutes drive from the cottage) as well as other tips and recommendations in the area; from beer based, to the La'al Ratty miniature railway (our personal favourite)...! LAYOUT OF COTTAGE We have three good sized double bedrooms, one of which, known as the Alice (in Wonderland) Bedroom occupies the whole of the top floor, and has four Velux windows, so is very light, bright and airy; it is accessed via a private staircase with a curtain which provides privacy, although the bedroom itself doesn't have a door. The two other double bedrooms have their own distinct characters, and are on the middle floor, along with the family bathroom and a large landing area. We have three additional single floor mattresses which help with configurations for larger groups and families, taking occupancy up to nine. These mattresses can be made up with a full set of linens, in the master Alice Bedroom, The Blue Room and/or on the large landing area. We have one family bathroom with a long, deep, free-standing dream of a bath and a lovely rain shower; complete with dimmable lighting for relaxing soaks. PARKING There is parking for up to two cars in the private, off road courtyard which we share with our two neighbours; with a short, characterful (in terms of the potholes) dirt track that approaches it. Our house is at one end of the track, our local pub is at the other. ORIGINAL FEATURES & ECCENTRICITIES Our ground floor has the original cobbles and troughs of the coach house. This means practicality in spades for wet coats and muddy wellies; but a potential trip hazard too. You easily get used to it, and it's an amazing feature, but it's worth bearing in mind. Our sofas are really great for slouching; and are made up of old flags which we have collected over the years. They have a unique, worn, character which we love; but aren't your typical sofa covering. There is a TV that connects to a DVD player for playing DVDs and music: i.e. no live TV and no wifi, for off grid bliss. We have an eclectic assortment of films and music at the cottage, or you're welcome to bring your own. LOCAL HISTORY If you're a history buff, try entering Holmrook Hall into Wikipedia for more detail about the history of the cottage's links to Lewis Carroll, and how it came by its name: (HMS) 'Volcano'. We also have lots of locally sourced history, research and books at the cottage which you are welcome to browse. LAKE DISTRICT ATTRACTIONS Please have a look at our last section of photographs for ideas for activities, and things to do with younger family members. Volcano is well situated to enjoy peace and relaxation; whilst also being well placed for a variety of day trips: be it Go-Ape adventuring; or visiting many of the Lakes which give the area its name.
Neighbourhoods don't come much better than this if you like a lack of street lights and a pub at the end of the track... Our cottage is the middle of three, off a private courtyard, with parking for up to two cars. The courtyard in turn accesses a private dirt track, which winds down to the River Irt, and fields and footpaths galore... REMOTENESS Volcano is remote enough that your nearest chain supermarket is half an hour's drive away, but well serviced and connected, with local shops, pubs, restaurants and a good road system. The Airbnb Itinerary and our Welcome Pack contains lots of information on smaller local shops (less than 3 minutes drive from the cottage) as well as other tips and recommendations in the area; from beer based, to the La'al Ratty miniature railway...! LITERARY REFERENCES Volcano was originally part of the stables for the Hall, which was home to the Lutwidge family, aka Lewis Carroll's (of Alice in Wonderland fame) Uncle; and, as you exit the cottage straight onto tracks and fields, it's not hard to imagine where the inspiration for timekeeping hares and lazy caterpillars came from! OUR VILLAGE The village has the life essentials. In no particular order, but I know what our priorities are :-) a children's playground, our local pub, small wildflower meadow/village ecology garden, mechanic's garage, agricultural feed store, post office, and petrol station come comprehensive grocery store stocking local goods. LOCAL TOWNS Drigg, Santon Bridge, Gosforth and Seascale (all around ten minutes drive from the cottage) have another good two handfuls of pubs, a Co-op, convenience store, takeaways, and small gift shops. MUCKING ABOUT ON THE WATER Seascale has a lovely beach, with spectacular sunsets across the Irish Sea towards the Isle of Man, and Ravenglass is The Lakes' only costal village, with a beautiful estuary for 'mucking about on the water' Swallows and Amazons style, or just watching the sun set over the dunes from the pub. Coniston Water, the setting for Swallows and Amazons, is about an hour's drive away. EXPERIENCE THE 'REAL' LAKE DISTRICT The Western Lakes are a privilege to discover. Away from the well trodden tourist trails, Volcano is less than 2 miles from the beach, and less than two miles from the Lake District National Park, with a Scafell Pike route at Wasdale Head a beautiful 10 mile drive away. As the road to this route up Scafell follows the contours of Wastwater, it inevitably makes it a slower drive than the ten miles suggests, as the views are so stunning! Ambleside and Windermere are an hour and a half drive, Lancaster around two hours, and Carlisle a similar distance in the opposite direction. The Cumbrian Coast Mainland Railway is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in England, and it delivers you to within a half hour walk from our door. The Cumbrian Coastal Line, and La'al Ratty (Cumbrian for: 'Little Railway') have featured in a BBC programme entitled 'Britain's Greatest Railway Journeys', hosted by Michael Portillo. Muncaster Castle is also just a five minute drive away and its Owl Sanctuary, falconry show and incredible views (not to mention, haunted bedroom!) make it one of the Lake District's hidden tourist gems. BRITAIN'S FAVOURITE VIEW WINNER A recent winner of 'Britain's Favourite View', Wastwater is 7 miles from our small village; which manages to squeeze in a post office come agricultural feed store, a petrol station come village store, and, the all important pub - a four minute walk (& only because of the lack of street lights!) directly from our front door to theirs... COTTAGE OF HISTORIC INTEREST During the the Second World War the cottage was part of a Royal Navy land base at Holmrook Hall, and was named HMS Volcano. It was the home of the bomb and munitions training school between 1943 and 1946, with a primary purpose of teaching munitions and explosive demolition to Royal Navy personnel and to special forces including many Norwegians. It was a top secret establishment and the locals were told that the hall had been requisitioned as a recuperation hospital for those who had suffered shipwrecks; a version of events many believe to this day. We have compiled a folder of local history for Guests at the cottage, which makes for fascinating reading.
  • The biggest thank you to Caroline and Carl for having our family stay at ‘Volcano’. It’s our FIFTH stay in this amazing location and the house looks better than ever. Thank you so much for wine and popcorn, and all the thoughtful toiletries. From the firewood and coffee to the blankets it was all perfect and comfortable despite it being a stormy February. We love it there and felt at home straight away! Our children had the best holiday, we explored the lake, beach and little train. The house was comfortable and beautiful. Thank you so much. We couldn’t recommend you enough, one of our favourite places in the world xxx

  • We booked Volcano last minute for my mums birthday , trying to find accommodation for one night for a group of 9 was really difficult at short notice, but Carl and Caroline even from all the way in America really couldn’t do enough for you , they responded quick with clear and informative responses. Booking was very easy . The only thing that let this trip down was the £150 cleaning charge(which needs to be made clearer) on top of the advertised amount on the booking which you have to pay separately for after your booking has gone through . The house itself, booking for such a large group I was worried about the accommodation, but to arrive at such a remote and stunning property myself and my group of 8 really where blown away. The location is stunning, the house itself it really quirky yet very homely, equipped with everything you can imagine and stocked with the essentials . Beds where really comfortable and the most stunning bath and huggge rain shower . The biggest thing for me was how clean everywhere was . Really really recommend. We ate in and would highly recommend the Gosforth Hall Inn, the food was amazing the atomosphere was so relaxing and snug we had lunch and returned later for our dinner as the fires where lit, the company was brilliant . Highly recommended.

  • We stayed at Caroline and Carl's place in a group of 6 for a birthday, they made everything so easy, and the house was spectacular. The location is great, with everything you could want or need close by, the whole experience so enjoyable, and they added really thoughtful personal touches which made the stay even better! I would recommend this place 100% and hopefully we'll get to visit again!

  • Volcano is a quirky, stylish and comfortable place to spend time in the Western Lakes. We loved all being together around the log burner in the evenings and the bedrooms were comfortable and warm during a chilly spell in the Lakes. Caroline and Carl were always super prompt to respond to any questions before and during our stay. Would definitely return!

  • A lovely cosy cottage! Beautiful views, close to loads of walks, really comfortable. We enjoyed the fire. The breakfast was a lovely touch and much appreciated. Sari was very friendly and helpful and we knew where she was if we had any issues (we didn't!). Surprisingly spacious too, we had 4 adults staying and there was plenty of room. We really enjoyed our stay.

  • A very clean and cosy place to stay, always very warm and a lovely comfy bed, perfect for relaxing after walks out in the mountains.

    Emily2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • Great location to explore some of the more remote west of Cumbria. The Granary was a perfect little bolt hole for us for a couple of nights. Madonna was a great host, the cottage was clean, tidy, warm and comfortable - huuuge king size bed! All in all had a lovely stay.

    Penelope2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great base from which to explore Scafell Pike and the surrounding lakes. It’s a lovely peaceful setting with great views. The pub is walking distance and is cosy, serving a reasonable standard of pub food. The place itself has most things you need- the kitchen is a little small for doing any real cooking but just about big enough to make a cooked breakfast. Only gripe was that we couldn’t control the heating from within the house and it did get quite chilly, however Madonna was very responsive in getting this sorted.

    Louise2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • Very warm welcome to a lovely place to stay. Small but well provided kitchenette and great mezzanine bedroom, with a huge and comfortable bed.

    Barnaby2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • The Granary was the most perfect setting for a weekend in the Lake District. Spotlessly clean, cosy and really well equipped, we couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay whilst we explored the Lakes. Madonna and Tony were incredibly friendly and accommodating, the communication was excellent and they were the perfect hosts for a perfect stay! Very highly recommended!

    Marcus & Kay2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • This house is perfect! The location is so quiet and the house is full of character and charm. We loved our stay at the granary and would come back to this cosy house in a heartbeat. The local food in nearby pubs was all delicious and so close to Scafell pike as well as other walks, so was a great location! Would recommend this house to anyone and everyone!

    Ben2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • My boyfriend & I stayed at The Granary for 4 nights, and it was absolutely perfect. We would highly recommend staying there, or in any of Madonna's listings. The area is stunning for incredible mountain walking, river, tarn & lake swimming. The Bower House Inn pub is 10 minutes walk away and serves amazing food, we went there every night! Madonna and her family are lovely, she is a great host, friendly, welcoming, relaxed and helpful. We took the wrong path down Scafell Pike and she did not hesitate to help us out by giving us a lift, which was very kind. Thanks again Madonna for having us, we hope to be back some time soon!

!! At the moment we are not taking bookings for the next month due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Recently renovated blacksmith's cottage 4 star English tourism rated Private terrace, traditional wood stove Many Lakeland walks from the doorstep 10 mins to local shop, pubs, Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway Now with WiFi!!
There is a private playground for children, a spacious feel due to a mezzanine bedroom, and a new kitchen
  • Spotlessly clean throughout, comfortable beds and sofa and a good shower so all the basics very well catered for! Also very good heating so we didn't even get to use the log burner. Kitchen is also well equipped for cooking. Only note is that if you're planning on having kids use the twin beds on the mezzanine, noise from the living area/kitchen is likely to be an issue if they go to bed earlier as it's semi open.

  • Absolutely Beautiful!!! My family and I spent Christmas here and what a wonderful Christmas it has been. Madonna is a perfect host, the cottage has everything equipped for a long stay. A beautiful and tranquil room in an ildyllic barn conversion, located in one of the most stunning valleys of the UNESCO World Heritage National Park - The Lake District. In a peaceful and quiet courtyard, with plenty of private parking, you can use The Stables as a base to explore further afield. With a spacious garden, complete with the local narrow gauge steam railway, “The Ratty” running through the end, our home is a delightful haven away from the hustle and bustle of normal life.
Guests will have their own double bedroom, with full height windows looking out onto the quiet courtyard, and sole use of the downstairs bathroom, with WC & shower. A simple breakfast is provided, along with linen and towels. We are both enthusiastic outdoor people and can certainly recommend the best places to visit and explore. The valley boasts a fantastic narrow gauge steam engine, which stops literally five minutes from our front door! Scafell is also easily accessible from the door, as well as various other natural tarns and walks – a real eclectic mix of nature. There are five pubs, most within walking distance and all within two miles – so you’re certainly spoilt for choice. We do have a rabbit who lives outside (super friendly, but just a word of warning for anyone with a severe allergy)! We really look forward to welcoming you to our home!
  • Great place to use as a base for a visit to this lovely area of the Lakes. Ceara and Chris are a lovely couple who make you feel welcome. Lovely walks and an excellent location for a visit to The Ratty, I can recommend the cream tea at Dalegarth and the food at The Boot Inn

The Schoolhouse is a quirky detached south facing cottage offering cosy comfortable studio style self catering accommodation on one level for two people. There is a private enclosed garden and there are spectacular views up the fell.
Woodend Schoolhouse is quite remote and situated in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, within a Farm and surrounded by numerous sheep, cows, chickens, pigs, visiting ducks, canada geese, a heron and many other birds including pied wagtails and swallows. Located quite high on Birker Fell (950') and approached from the fell along a single track road through a gate, it has fantastic views across the fell towards Scafell Pike, (Englands's highest mountain), and is a ten minute walk from one of the smaller of the lakes, Devoke Water, which never the less is nearly a mile long. There are incredible views towards Scafell Pike, Bow Fell and Crinkle Craggs. Within twenty minutes walking you can be at the top of Devoke Seat where, on a clear day, you have a 360 degree panoramic view that includes Devoke Water, the Langdales, the coast and the Isle of Man.
We are situated 3 miles from both the Eskdale Valley and the Duddon Valley and conveniently situated for Ulpha, Seathwaite, Broughton-in-Furness and Boot. There are several dog friendly pubs and plenty of waling and sightseeing. There are details of places to visit on our website.
  • What a place! The Schoolhouse was clean, cosy and perfect for a wee getaway. Paul and Jella have thought of eveything so your needs are well catered for. Incredibly comfy bed, hot shower and the log burner made for a perfect retreat. Thank you both so much!

    Anna2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • My girlfriend and I stayed here, looking to hike in the local area which is a beautiful part of the Lake District. It's surrounded by peaceful and quiet green farms, with absolutely no light pollution at night. The schoolhouse cottage where we stayed at has a lovely and authentic feel of the countryside, and the old-fashioned interaction of a iron cast log fire where wood and coal keeps you warm was nice to use. Sky TV, books, DVDs, and pots plus pans come with the place so we were able to wind down and cook after a long day of hiking. You can buy the local farm eggs too. Paul and Gella were very friendly and always available, giving us information for our hikes too. You are able to park your car here too. We shall come in the summer as we thoroughly enjoyed the cosy experience of the countryside!

    Anindyo2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • We had a cracking time and the cottage was even better than the pictures! The nearby lake was stunning, even despite the weather and we loved the greenhouse which was like a huge porch! Ideal for cleaning up the dog after a long walk. Would definitely stay again!

From the front door you can access great local walks where can either amble along the river or go to the high mountains. In the summer the stunning garden offers a place to relax, eat and watch the La'al Ratty steam train go by. ( Don't forget to wave at the driver and passengers ). Eskdale is one of the most tranquil valleys in the Lake District boasting great walks, character pubs and stunning views. 'The Green' station is 2 mins from the cottage so the little ones ( and big ones ) can also enjoy a ride on the steam train to Ravenglass or Boot. More tourist information, Railway timetables and things to do are also available in the house.
  • Hollowmire was the perfect place for a New Year stay, and a chance to recover from Christmas! The house was warm, clean and very well-equipped, and we enjoyed the open fire on cold evenings. We already know Eskdale well, but enjoyed the chance to renew our acquaintance with La'al Ratty, which was running over the festive season. Visits to the Brook House Inn and to the King George IV were also enjoyable. We strongly recommend this property to potential visitors to this lovely part of the country.

  • We could not believe the location and how comfortable and cosy the Buttery was. The hosts were always available for local advice on everything from the weather to safety tips for getting around. The information pack and the directions they provided were very detailed and we used them for just about everything from the stove to the nearest petrol station. It was invaluable! Highly recommend Woodend Buttery! Just remember to stock up on provisions before you get there as the nearest shop is a fair distance away :)

  • We stayed in the Buttery at Woodend and absolutely loved our stay. The Buttery is small but perfectly formed. The living room / kitchen is really cosy with the wood burning stove, the bed is very comfortable and the roll top bath was a lovely surprise. We would highly recommend a visit.

  • What an amazing location! The scenery on your doorstep is breathtaking. We really enjoyed our stay, just the relaxing break we needed.

    Helen2019-12-04T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic location for 3 days escaping in the Lakes! There are 4 cottages on the site but we rarely saw anyone and it felt wonderful and remote. The Buttery is perfect to get cosy by the wood burner after a days walking. The local tips meant we had 2 great meals out and the well equipped kitchen meant we could prepare breakfast and dinner too. We didn’t even need the car one day due to the route recommended down to the falls. 3 nights was not enough and we’re already planning our next trip!

There were some lovely touches such as fresh flowers, chocolate brownie and some treats for our dog when we arrived. The cottage / apartment is very close to the beautiful scenery of Was Water and the Eskdale Valley. It is only a short drive to the Bower House Inn where we had a very nice meal and would recommend a visit. Ideal if you have a dog as Betty's Cottage is situated well back off the road down a quiet lane, so lots of space for them to run around.

  • We had such a perfect experience at Betty's Cottage. We arrived after a very long drive to a cosy, warm little cottage and Lesley had kindly provided some delicious cake, 2 shots (not sure what but they were amazing, schnapps?!) And some treats for our pup Phoebe. Not to mention some home made bread and eggs. The cottage is clean, very homely with everything you'd need. It felt like coming back to a home away from home after being out walking all day. The location is ideal and there are so many beautiful walks nearby as well as dog friendly pubs. Lesley has some great recommendations. Thank you Lesley and John for being such wonderful hosts, we would love to return for another stay. I highly recommend booking here. Love from Amber, Nate and Phoebe xxx

  • Betty's Cottage couldn't be in a more idyllic part of the Lake District. The beautiful Wast Water Lake is about 20 minutes away, as is the UK's highest peak, Scafell Pike (although that will take you at least three hours to ascend!). Betty's Cottage is situated in the middle of the countryside with sweeping views of the mountains and valley. We woke every morning to the simple sound of wondrous silence, punctuated by the mooing of cows and not much else. We even spotted bunnies hopping across the field one morning. The cottage itself has everything you could wish for for a wonderfully comfortable stay. We cooked dinner every night in its cosy kitchen, which has all the amenities you will need, caught up on some reading and Netflix in the evenings in the lounge, which has a wonderful view over the valley too, and slept like the dead in the lovely upstairs bedroom. Lesley is a very gracious and generous host who treated us to local eggs, some beautiful locally-grown tomatoes and the most scrumptious home-baked cake and bread. We couldn't have been happier and returned to London feeling utterly refreshed. We hope to be back to see you soon, Lesley, John, Lucy, Louis and Bruce! Thank you so much! P.S. Be sure to pop into Woodlands restaurant/cafe for their yummy breakfasts and the best scones around. Also, be sure to have lunch or dinner at the superb Bower House Inn -- their local brew is great too. There's a lovely old church, Irton Church, with a ninth-century Celtic cross up the road that's worth a visit too.

  • Beautiful place, tastefully done, very picturesque & SUPER HOSTS. Definitely recommended. Initially it feels like the place is located in the middle of nowhere but that is what makes you fall in love with it even more. There is so much to explore everywhere, in the house, in the Woodend cottage compound, nearby that you should definitely allocate time to absorb the feel of the place. We were awestruck by the attention to detail that has been paid to make this cottage so comfortable & lovely. The french windows, the views from the cottage, OMG! Do go through the information/welcome booklet provided & am sure like us you'll make changes to your itinerary. If I get the chance to visit Lake District again, I know where I am going to stay. Special cheer for Paul & Jella :)

  • My boyfriend & I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Undercroft. The accommodation was clean, cosy and very well equipped. The location was also fab, very close to Wastwater Lake & Scafell Pike, with a lovely local pub down the road. It was also dog friendly, with plenty of enclosed grounds for the pooch for his evening and morning walks. We were especially blown away by the hospitality provided by the owners, Maria & Ian. We were greeted with a friendly smile and plenty of local tips on where to visit, they even lent us their GPS for our trip up Scafell. We had a great chat with them both on our first evening, it was truly a pleasure to meet them. We would recommend this accomdation to anyone and will be sure to stay again in the future. Much love.

  • This was a repeat visit for us - can’t get a better recommendation than that! Perfect size for the two of us taking a weekend break between Christmas and New Year for some winter walking. Location is perfect for all the southwest fells - handy access to Wasdale and Eskdale in particular. Santon Bridge Inn food and beer both recommended after a long day’s walking.

  • A very good location for walking fells round Wastwater and thankfully excellent drying facilities provided too! (best we've come across). The weather was poor so laundry room with heated drying rails was a wonderful provision for muddy boots and drenched walking clothes! (We purchased drying rail for ourselves after our visit!) Maria's husband was very friendly and helpful coming to see if there was anything we needed. Although the Stable is below their living quarters it is very private with little noise. Highly recommend Wasdale Head Inn for roaring fire and excellent food, just what is needed after a good fell walk!

    Marcia2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • The Stable is a studio on the ground floor of a large farmhouse. It has a bedroom/living area, a kitchen and a bathroom with a power shower. Maria provides tea and coffee, with some milk in small cartons. The bed is comfortable and I slept very well during my visit. The Stable has everything you need for self catering, but the Bridge Inn is a four minute walk down the road and does some excellent food. Freeview and WIFI are provided, and work nicely.

    Andrew2020-01-31T00:00:00Z
  • Maria is a welcoming, friendly host who looked after us really well and The Stable is a lovely place to stay. Even though it's a studio it feels spacious enough and it was spotlessly clean, well-appointed and very comfortable for the two of us. The shower is amazing! The location is great for the pub down the road (Jennings Cumberland Ale and good food) and for numerous high and low level walks. Be aware that there is another apartment just next door (as mentioned in listing) and the family home overhead so there can be other people around. We had a great short stay and look forward to returning - there are plenty of hills in Wasdale left for us to climb!

  • Wonderful place to Base yourself for the West lake district. Maria was an excellent host, helping us with our stay and some great local recommendations.

  • Had a great stay at The Stable. Maria was very welcoming and the appartment was sparkling clean, warm and quite spacy! Had everything we needed. Great base to explore the fells around Wasdale head from. Thoroughly recommended!

  • Maria is a great host. Helpful and friendly and looked out for us during our stay, with handy advice on walks and where to eat. We’ve had a great trip and the stable was perfect! Good size and well equipped. Lovely bed linen and really snug plus super clean and modern. Look forward to staying there again next year! Nicki and Mark

Three lovely Holiday Lodges set in an acre of ancient orchard, right in the heart of Eskdale, one of the quieter and most beautiful valleys in the Lake District. With a large sunny outdoor area and fantastic views of the surrounding fells, Fisherground is an ideal base for exploring the beautiful mountains, rivers and lakes in the area. Games room. Rafting pond. Wonderful walks straight from the door, pet friendly, short walk to the local pubs.
Each lodge has a lovely big sitting room, with Freesat HDTV and a wood burning stove. The kitchen and dining areas open off this, the kitchen is fully fitted with an electric fan oven, four ring hob, microwave oven, dishwasher, fridge with freezer compartment and all the usual utensils and crockery. There are three bedrooms, one with a double bed, one with twin beds and one with a set of adult sized bunks. The bathroom has WC, washbasin and bath/shower. Heating is by electric panel heaters throughout and a wood burning stove in the lounge, keeping the lodge toasty and warm whatever the season.
The River Esk runs close by, with tumbling waterfalls and magnificent clear pools to swim in. For the more adventurous, we have links with the local lake district outdoor activity specialist and can help you organise guided walks, rock climbing, ghyll scrambling, kayaking etc. The famous Ravenglass & Eskdale Miniature Railway runs along the valley, its steam trains making the leisurely seven-mile journey down to Ravenglass a picturesque old fishing village with a ruined Roman bath house and Muncaster Castle nearby. Scafell Pike, Englands highest mountain can be climbed from Eskdale. There are five good pubs in the Eskdale Valley, the King George is just a few minutes walk away, all serve good food and ales and welcome children and dogs.
  • Had a very relaxing stay with my parents and their dog in one of the lodges. The cosy wood burner kept us warm in the evenings and there were plenty of local tips for walks and good pubs. The lodges were so modern and clean, would definitely recommend them. Very easy check in/out process too with key safe. Excellent hosts.

  • My friends and I spent a few days at Peters Lodge exploring the Lake District. Our trip was made easier and more enjoyable by Peters fast response time and helpful tips when it came to the surrounding area. The place itself was just as it looked in the photos, and made a lovely rest stop in between climbing the surrounding mountains. Not to mention the log fire being a great addition and something to look forward to after being out and about in the snow, rain and harsh wind! Would definitely stay again, hopefully next time when there’s not a storm blowing through the valleys!

This wonderful old cottage thought to date from the 17th Century has been lovingly restored and is many visitors’ favourite of our cottages. It offers a cosy lounge with log burner, dining room and semi connected kitchen area formed around a staircase with a half landing to a modern bathroom. At first floor is a king bedroom with en-suite and a large twin room both with stunning views towards Muncaster Fell. The Cottage is available singularly or with one or more of our other cottages.
The Cottage offers quality fixtures and fittings blended with the old world charm of open beams and a mixture of slate and timber floors. The new windows and front door were built in a joinery in nearby Santon and much of the conversion work was undertaken by local tradesmen. The emphasis is on ‘traditional’. Whilst the kitchen and bathrooms are modern, they respect the design and form of the house. In fact this is thought to have formerly been 2 cottages as it had 2 staircases - one has been realigned and the second converted to provide an en-suite bathroom to the master bedroom. A log burner has been retained in the original fireplace and the timber shutters to the living room windows and William Morris wallpaper add to the ambience of the room. There is freesat tv, full central heating and limited WiFi. Ain House has an on-site wood and easy access to Irton Fell to the north with paths onto Illgill Head where there are tremendous views into Wasdale and towards the Scafell range. The property is orientated to the south maximising exposure to the sun and the wonderful views of Muncaster Fell, Birker Fell and the coast. There is a fore-garden for the private use of Cottage guests.
Ain House and cottages are set back about 300m from Bowerhouse Bank off their own drive. The buildings sit against the backdrop of Irton Fell and are surrounded by beautiful countryside. There are no other properties visible from the property - it’s remote enough to feel ‘away from it’ but only half a mile or so from two local pubs. Formerly farm buildings and at one time used as a sawmill and timber workshop, the main house has been extended and refurbished by the owners. The outbuildings have all been renovated - the Stables and another rebuilding (The Cartshed) having been lovingly converted and a pre-existing cottage also having been fully gutted and redeveloped. The owners are constantly improving the premises and projects particularly to improve the external areas are ongoing but will not detrimentally impact on your stay. Whilst offered to rent individually it is feasible to group book 2 or 3 properties which can sleep 14 in total. Occasionally a further one bedroom (2 person) cottage may be available by separate negotiation.

Room 3 is a double room. We also have listings for Room 1 with two single beds, Room 2 with a double bed, and a listing for all three. We are near to Drigg Beach, and under 10 minutes walk to Drigg Railway Station on the West Cumbrian Coastal line. Nearby are Ravenglass for La'al Ratty Train, Wasdale, Wastwater, Scafell Pike, and Eskdale. There are local food shops and a mix of pubs and restaurants. Although we don't provide any meals you are welcome to bring food and cook in the shared kitchen.
Coastal West Cumbria offers space to walk, stand still, look, see and breath, a breath of fresh air. Cumbrian space, light, contrast; a place to recharge your batteries, unwind, walk, pass the time of day....and our home is pretty much like that too.
Drigg is a mile from the beach and about 12 miles to the head of either Eksdale, or Wasdale for Scafell Pike, Great Gable etc.. We have David Powell-Thompson, qualified mountain leader and guide lives a few hundred yards away. Also, carolclimb; Carol Emmons and Richard Sagar, for climbing and all manner of outdoor pursuits, based in Wasdale. We are on the route of the Seascale to Whitby C2C Cycle route over Hardknott Pass, the starting point is 3 miles north by road or the next stop north on the local train line. Open water swimming is permitted in many of the lakes and tarns nearby, safety first, and a wetsuit is strongly advisable in winter! Driving is often on narrow roads with passing places, and the Hardknott Pass, not for the faint hearted, is the steepest road in England. The ruins of Hardknott Roman Fort are part way up. For more leisurely travel La'al Ratty Railway narrow guage railway travels from Ravenglass to Dalegarth for Boot in Eskdale. Muncaster Castle and Grounds, three miles down the road, are on the informal side of Stately Homes, they host several fairs and events during the year and the Rhododendrons and Azaleas are quite stunning in the late Spring. This is the quiet side of the Lakes and we are about an hours drive from Windermere for scenic boat travel and all things Beatrix Potter. Holmrook Garage in Holmrook is handy for fuel and general produce, not 24 hours. The local shops in Seascale provide most basic requirements for a weekend away, but not exotic fare such as found in city stores.
  • We had a really lovely time staying with Sally and Roger. Everything was super clean and comfortable and welcoming. It was a treat to be so close to the sea and mountains!

Irt cottage is a traditional Lakeland cottage standing in generous gardens and set in an idyllic location bordered by natural woodland and the river Irt. Situated in the heart of the iconic Wasdale valley in the Lake District National Park the holiday cottage offers the perfect base from which to enjoy and explore the surroundings.
The holiday cottage comfortably sleeps 6 people and briefly comprises 2 double bedrooms, 1 twin room, bathroom with bath, shower & WC upstairs, while downstairs there is a generous kitchen, dining room, lounge, snug, a further WC and shower room and a boot room with washing machine. Log burning stoves in the lounge and dining room together with central heating throughout ensure that whatever the time of year and weather, Irt cottage offers a warm and cosy base.
The lovely village of Nether Wasdale with its church and 2 country pubs is only a short walk while the village of Gosforth is nearby. England's deepest lake, Wastwater, is less than a mile and just beyond the lake lies England's highest mountain Scafell.
  • This is the third year in a row that we have rented Irt Cottage and it never disappoints. This year was for a late christmas weekend with friends and it was like christmas all over again, nice and cosy with the log fire on.

The Farmhouse has been at the entrance to the Santon Bridge hollow since the days of the old packhorse trains that used to ply their way between Whitehaven and Kendal over Styhead Pass. This fascinating old building provides spacious accommodation for up to eight people (sometimes more), with breathtaking views of Wasdale. Short lets are available at last minute so just phone. The house is good for couples, families (with kids), and we do take pets at a small cost.
With four large double en-suite bedrooms, two wood burning stoves, a classic ‘living’ farm kitchen, separate ‘character’ dining room and a comfortable, light living room, this is a truly special place to base yourself in the Western Lake District. Essentially, the house is a warm, homely and relaxing space, set in the most beautiful of locations, the building is over 150 years old and has the patina to show it, it is not a boutique hotel! Please note we do not provide towels so please bring them, overseas guests however will be supplied. The picture you see on the website shows the farmhouse which is on the left side of the photo. To the right is a converted barn which is a separate property, the farm has been converted into several separate buildings now and is a very pleasant location at the foot of the Wasdale valley.
The River Irt is nearby. This is Wasdale and it has Britain's favourite view! A pub is 300 metres away. The farm buildings are isolated from other properties in the neighbourhood, but it is a 'complex' in that there are other people living on the site and there are five separate dwellings which have been converted from other agricultural buildings. So please be aware you will be in close proximity to other holidaymakers but possibly won't see much of them. The neighbourhood is quite sparsely populated and relies on agriculture and tourism as the main trades and employment. If ypu are planning to bring pets please make sure that they are kept on a lead especially around livestock. Don't allow them to chase sheep (mainly Herdwicks) which roam freely on the fells. The pubs in the area are great and serve good food, in large portions, and the local beers, some brewed on the premises, are fantastic.
  • Fantastic

    Hannah2019-10-24T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great weekend away here. The house was nice and roomy, with ensuite on every room and set in beautiful countryside. What a lovely view to wake up to in the morning.

    Suzanne2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • A large welcoming home perfect for large family with all bedrooms having en-suite. The house is quite remote and therefore a lot of travelling to see some attractions, but perfect if you want some great walks and good pub food locally.

    Cheryl2019-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • This is a wonderful place for a holiday. It was perfect for us as two families of four, plenty of space. Tony was super-helpful at all times, and although the location is relatively remote, there are lots of excellent pubs within easy reach, several small shops within about 10 minutes drive, and we had a Tesco delivery arrive as planned on our first day.

    Nick2019-05-31T00:00:00Z
  • If you're looking for a homely place to accommodate a larger group comfortably, in a beautiful corner of the Lake District near good walks (and a pub!) then this is the place. We really enjoyed our short stay and would love to come back. Tony and Rachael are very easy to communicate with and I would definitely recommend staying at their place.

    Olly And Abby2019-05-26T00:00:00Z
  • Cosy and comfortable, nice and quiet but within easy reach of everything you would want from the Lakes.

    Paul2019-03-31T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at the farmhouse as a group of 8 for the weekend to walk up the peaks of the Lake District. The place was lovely and accommodated us all comfortably. The rooms are spread over 4 floors and were well-equipped. The property is surrounded by others on the same plot. The neighbours are very friendly and accommodating. The local pub, The Bridge Inn is just a 2 minute walk away. It is cosy, has a great menu, and offers many real ales. Various roads meet at Santon Bridge so you do not need a great detour to get around. Plus, it is less than a 30 minute drive from Wasdale Head - for those inclined to climb the peaks like us. On our final night the power went out in the home which required an electrician to fix, and could not be restored before we left after breakfast the next day. I informed Tony, our host and he went out of his way to help organise an emergency call-out and kept us informed. Tony generously compensated our meal at the local pub that evening and there were plenty of torches for light. There was even wood for the living room stove to keep us warm. The neighbours went out of there way to help us. They brought is hot water and cooked our breakfast sausages for us! We did find that the water pressure was not sufficient to run multiple showers in the different en suites simultaneously, but this was not a great issue and we just went one at a time. I would recommend bringing groceries to supplement your entire stay to save travelling a bit of a distance if you want top up at a bigger supermarket. Even with the unfortunate power outage, we had a great time and look forward to booking again in the future to climb Scafell Pike (when the weather is a little better!) Thank you again, Tony.

Picturesque end of terrace cottage in the heart of Gosforth, centrally situated for all village amenities including shop, cafe, pubs and free car park. The Wild Olive restaurant is just round the corner which I would definitely recommend. There is a large playing field to the rear of the property with a children’s play area, a football pitch , basketball court and plenty of open space.
The cottage has been recently renovated to a high standard, with original doors and fireplace with a wood burning stove. The living area is open plan leading onto a small but well equipped kitchen. Stairs to the upstairs are very steep and quite uneven so may not be suitable for anyone with mobility problems. The upstairs space consists of the main bedroom which looks towards the fells. The second bedroom contains a small double bed. Please note a single airbed can be provided for use in the living area if you feel a small double would be unsuitable for your group..The bathroom is a bright, attractive space and has an over the bath shower. The cottage has a small garden to the front and a private, sunny garden offset to the rear of the property which has access to the playing field ideal for families with children. A BBQ is provided as well as an outdoor table and chairs.
Gosforth is a small but charming village situated in the western Lake District. It is a 15 minute drive to Wasdale with Wastwater the deepest lake and Scawfell Pike the highest mountain with spectacular scenery. The beautiful Eskdale valley is also a short drive away with the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway, Dalegarth Falls as well as many nice walks and good pubs. Gosforth is also only 2 miles away from beach at Seascale which you can walk to along the cycle track.

  • The photos don’t do this place any justice. Warm and cosy, perfectly practical with everything you need for a few days away. The perfect base for a few days walking in the lakes, even better that they allow well behaved pets too. Sparkling clean and very homely, didn’t want to leave!

  • Helen’s family cottage is a cosy and spacious little gem. It was a perfect base for going out and exploring the local sites. Our 2 year old loved it; the park out back was thoroughly enjoyed every morning and evening. It was unfortunate our dog couldn’t also enjoy the large playing field as no dogs allowed but the garden was big enough for her to have a good run around with a ball. We had some good food at the Kellbank and Gosforth Hall Inn. The Ravenglass steam railway was good fun and we also had a day out at Muncaster Castle, finished up with a visit to Wasdale Lake. The cottage has lots of lovely little touches, with paintings in all the rooms, fresh flowers when we arrived and a torch which was used and appreciated! We dare not touch the record player with a mischief maker in tow but it was a cool touch. We had a memorable family holiday and would highly recommend Helen’s cottage.

  • A lovely cottage in a great little village around 30 minutes drive to Scafell Pike.

    Donna2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Cosy Cottage lives up to its name and certainly was cosy. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t what it should be for August but the house was clean tidy and had what we needed for our stay. It was better than I had expected it to be and was a firm favourite with my 5 year old daughter as the park is right out the back. Whilst there is no actual parking with the property you could easily park in the car parks or sometimes find a space a little further down the road. The cottage is in a great location in easy walking distance of pubs and a restaurant for food as well as for travelling around this area. You are only 25mins from Wasdale if you are climbing Scafell from that point so ideal. The people in the village were very friendly and helpful. We loved our short stay here and wouldn’t hesitate to come back again.

  • A very nice and comfy cottage, in the best possible location. You can hear the river flowing closely, you even have a garden with barbecues for... sunny days ;-) Spotless clean, the internal organisation of the cottage is optimised so that you don't feel it is pretty tiny. The bed is very comfortable and you have a shower AND a bath tub, which, after a day trekking outside is very much appreciated ! (Oh, and there is a pub 20 meters away :-))

The area offers some of the most stunning Lakeland scenery & it's easy to see why this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cottage itself is within a short terrace of character properties. The immediate surrounding area is remote so perfect for those wanting true peace and tranquility. There are various low level walks from doorstep. The Bridge Inn also hosts the 'Worlds Biggest Liar' competition every November and was recently voted CAMRA Best Pub in the Lake District for 2016/17. With the close proximity to the West coast, the famous St Bees with its special sea birds colonies, Seascale & Drigg beaches are just a short drive away. There is so much to see, do and enjoy - truly something for everyone.

  • Natasha's place is a nice and cosy cottage to stay in if you are visiting the Lake District. Other than slightly slow wifi (which was probably due to the weather), my friends and I had a great experience staying at Roses Cottage. Would definitely choose to stay here again!

    Chloe2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage has all you could wish for and more. We highly recommend staying here. Natasha was very responsive and informative in her communication.

  • Amazing, cute, clean and comfortable cottage in an idyllic location. Scarfell Pike, Wastwater and Seascale beach are all close by. It was a home away from home, where everything had been thought of. Natasha was a great host, fast communication (especially regarding safety due to storm Ciara!), and tips on things to do and places to see. Highly recommend! We will be back for a longer period next time.

Church Stile is a family owned and run Caravan Holiday Park nestling on a traditional Herdwick farm, in a truly idyllic location in the heart of Wasdale valley in the Lake District. Situated in the pretty village of Nether Wasdale, the holiday park is located in a traditional Lakeland oak woodland setting on the valley floor. The caravan looks out onto the Screes mountain range which tower above Wastwater only 1 mile away.
  • Kirsten is literally one of the loveliest hosts that you will ever meet, she’s not only so warm and welcoming but also provides amazing information about places to see and visit. Kirsten gave us a map to follow throughout our hike and it was a very great hike. One thing to bear in mind, which we didn’t, Is to ensure your pet (if you have any) is well suited and able to commit to walk a long journey before taking them out. The walk to the mountains which you see from your window are quite a distance for small dogs. Ensure to also wrap them up, our dog wasn’t used to it at all & became sick shortly after. Apart from that, our stay was amazing! We visited a nearby beach and the Co-op nearby. If you’re looking for a trip where you will truly rest from the hustle and bustle of city life, this is the one for you. No distractions, you’re in the middle of nowhere. Please also note that internet and signal is only available at one place within the site (reception area) there is none at all within the caravan. That wasn’t a problem for us at all :) It is explained that there is no public transport, don’t underestimate this. Most places to visit will require a car.

  • We had a wonderful Pre-Christmas break. The views and surrounding areas are incredible. Lovely site to be on, one we definitely hope to return to over summer. The caravan had everything we needed and was warm and homely. We thoroughly enjoyed it

Escape to the country in this fisherman's cottage right on the beach. The home has been tastefully redecorated, featuring rustic wood flooring and accents, a cosy fireplace, beamed ceilings, light touches of colour, and panoramic views.
The building is a 1715 fisherman's cottage, so expect low ceilings and small windows looking onto the Main St. At the back, the house has been extended, so the windows are large, looking onto our deck with the sea-wall at the end of the garden. There's a low wall between ours and the neighbours' houses. The kitchen is large and equipped for living, not just holidaying. So if you have gastronomic ambitions, go wild: it's a pleasure to cook and eat in as you watch the light change over the sand-dunes. The living-room is low-beamed, so watch your head. There's a gas fire for cosiness without hassle, 2 armchairs and a big sofa, with loads of cushions on all of them. The TV is a 46-inch SmartTV, so with the fibre internet (40 Mb/s) you can stream Netflix, iPlayer, etc. Upstairs, the twin room faces over the main street. The beds have memory-foam mattresses, velvet headboards and their own reading lamps. There's a big chest of drawers for your clothes. The double room has a built-in wardrobe, kingsize bed with antique wood-panelled headboard and memory-foam mattress. It also has a huge bay window looking out to sea. There's a small en-suite with toilet and shower. We've just refurbished the family bathroom, so it's immaculate with rainfall shower, bath and underfloor heating.
The home is located on a tidal estuary in the Lake District National Park. It is a great area for bird watching and walking. The property is in Ravenglass with its steam railway and Roman ruins. There are pubs, a supermarket, tea rooms, and much more nearby.
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay in Ravenglass. Such a beautiful cosy little house in the perfect location. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a quiet getaway.

    Jennifer2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay in Ravenglass. The cottage is perfect for a quiet retreat, especially in February when there really aren't many people around. The storm outside made it feel extra cosy, and it was lovely to look out from the master bedroom to the isolated estuary. The decor is carefully considered and feels like you're living in a White Company home (an unachievable dream for most of us!). If you need R&R in calm surroundings, this is the place for you.

    Natalie2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • I booked this beautiful beachfront cottage as a present for my parents and we couldn't recommend it more! I am apprehensive about taking my parents anywhere, as they have very high standards, but this cottage was breathtaking, and the only question we had when we left was, 'When are we coming back?' The cottage is in the most stunning location, with steps leading onto the beachfront. There is a large decking area with spectacular views - we loved watching the birds and the tide going in and out. The views throughout the properly are beautiful, the beds were super-comfortable and we loved having the fire on in the evenings. It was very well equipped with everything we needed and we enjoyed lazy breakfasts looking over the sea from the kitchen. We dined at the Pennington most nights of our stay and we loved the delicious food and wine - we would highly recommend eating here! We drove to Windermere and Ambleside (just over an hour away) and it was a beautiful drive - be careful of the cheeky sheep on the road! We truly had a very relaxing, cosy and scenic trip away in this lazy seaside village. Thank you for an amazing trip, Piers - your cottage is perfection.

    Yasmin2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • This has become our little safe haven away from the kids! Location location location, stylish quaint cottage, no noise ( well except for the birds, which we love watching in the day and one gusty night with gale force wind) We always come out of season, so probably don’t get to sample the kids playing in the water or certain restaurants. However for us, it is such a beautiful location and so relaxing to be away from family life. It is nothing more than exquisite! And the sunsets and sky if weather permits are beautiful. Piers, an absolute gem of a house and very grateful you have offered others the experience of the joy of this home when you’re not there. Merci

    Claire2020-02-05T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful home and beautiful surroundings - the perfect break! Such a cosy place: we settled in straight away. Had everything we needed and more. Would absolutely return again without a doubt.

    Michelle2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • This was our 4th stay and excellent as usual. Detail in previous reviews

    Mick2019-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful cottage - as per the photos and better! We were looking for a relaxing pre-Christmas break and this hit the spot. Ravenglass is a quiet, quaint village right on the Estuary...it's a great spot to be out of the touristy spots in the Lake, but close enough to them to visit. We particularly enjoyed the miniature train ride which starts a 3 minute walk from the cottage. Decor, comforts and amenities in the cottage were perfect, we enjoyed watching Netflix infront of the fire (that's 2019 for you!) and the big table in the kitchen was brilliant for playing board games on. Couldn't get enough of the view out of the bedroom and bathroom. Piers was a great host, through his communication and notes left in the house we had a very easy stay. We could tell he cares alot about his accommodation and service. Highly recommend.

The property is very fresh, clean and well stocked. The nearby walks including the stepping stones and water fall should not be missed. Sadly the mini train was out of season during our visit but we shall return soon when it is. Enjoy your visit.

  • We came to the cottage as a group of nine friends for a catching up weekend and had a lovely time. The setting was extremely quaint, a lovely little village and with two pubs. We were pleasantly surprised with the cottage and felt that the photos didn't do it justice. It was very well done out for catering a larger group, very cosy and practical for a weekend of walking and good food. Greg was very helpful and a self check-in made everything fuss free. Couldnt ask for a better weekend and for decent value. Thanks to Greg and team!

Well equipped, very comfortable and beautifully decorated cottage overlooking mini steam railway line in the middle of the picturesque Eskdale Valley. Perfect for family holidays and walking/climbing. 10 minutes walk to local pubs and well stocked village shop.
Damson Cottage as well as being very comfortable and well equipped inside also has its own garage and large grassed terrace and is perfect for inside and outside living. It also has access to a walled garden, wonderful for games with children and just reading quietly in the sunshine.
Our neighbourhood is very peaceful. You can have the most tranquil holiday or the most active as there are endless fabulous walks and climbing opportunities close by. Eskdale is a small village with a small primary school and we all know one another and enjoy the amazing lifestyle we are privileged to live here.
  • Super place, lovely quiet location with great views from the living room (including of the steam train line), just a short walk from the local shop and decent pub (Bower House Inn). Beds very comfy - double is actually a super king which was a bonus, with spotless linens and towels. Very clean throughout, cosy, and with a well equipped kitchen. Handy little walled garden outside the front door (well away from the driveway) which made a safe place for children to play in view of the house. Madonna was a super host- very helpful messages before and during our stay.

With thanks to Madonna for being a lovely host.

The Bothy is a quirky detached building offering cosy comfortable "upside down" self catering accommodation for two people. An enclosed private garden surrounds the Bothy and there are spectacular views of Scafell Pike.
Woodend Bothy is quite remote and situated in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria. From the car park, stone steps lead up to a gate and the front door. You enter into the combined lounge / dining / kitchen area with views towards Scafell Pike. Open plan wooden steps lead down to the bedroom, which has stone walls and oak beams. A door leads from the bedroom to the bathroom which has a traditional slipper bath, hand basin and WC. The kitchen and garden have incredible views towards Scafell Pike, Bow Fell and Crinkle Craggs.
There are several dog friendly pubs and plenty of walking and sightseeing. There are details of places to visit on our website.
  • Managed to find the Bothy with ease due to great directions. On arrival accomodation was clean and tidy and just what we were looking for to get away from it all for a few days. Even with snow, wind and rain its a beautiful location. Managed to get out and cycle over Hardknott pass which was only 10 miles away, after a break in the weather. We will definitely be staying again.

  • Really cosy week in the bothy despite very stormy February weather! It's a wonderful warm space with a lot of heart & character. Great isolated location on top of a windswept moorland plateau not far from Wasdale/other fells! Thoroughly recommend the Bothy (and all of the many nearby pubs too!)

  • Wonderful place. Remote yes but don’t let that put you off. Hot water and fire to keep you toasty warm. Wonderful pubs within half hours drive. Highly recommend.
