Top-rated things to do in Malibu

Unique activities hosted by local experts vetted for quality

  • Learn to Surf in Malibu
I use a few different beaches in Malibu so the beach we will be meeting on will be based on the conditions for the day you come. The beaches that I use are between the famous Malibu Pier in Southern Malibu to Zuma Beach in the Northern part of Malibu. Start to finish is 1 1/2 hours. The first 20 minutes we will consist of a beach lesson on the sand where we will go over the basics of surfing. We will go over water safety, paddling, balancing and the proper technique of surfing. Then out in the water for the rest of the time catching waves. My goal is to have you catch as many waves as possible in the time we spend together. I also almost guaranty that you will stand up and ride many waves. Other things to note I will supply surfboards, wetsuits and lesson. This Experience can be booked any time during any day. If you want to book it for a different time, please message me and let me know what time works.

  • Surfing Life
Before every lesson I look at the surf forecast and make sure it is suitable for the group. We'll meet at the parking area, grab our gear and head out to the beach. After a quick lesson on the sand we'll get into the water and ride our first waves! Rather than just pushing you into waves, taking pictures and saying "Bye". We will focus on catching a variety of types of waves and giving you tricks and tips that will serve you well for surfing on your own. You'll also learn local surf culture and etiquette so that you stay on the right side of your fellow surfers. These lessons are taught by myself or our other expert instructors. Our lessons are small groups (max 4 students per instructor), which maintains a standard of quality. Expect to develop a foundation that will serve you well on your track to becoming a self sufficient surfer. Catch a wave, and you'll be hooked! Other things to note: -Please have your phone and Airbnb app handy so the group can communicate before the event -Please plan to arrive a bit early. The group will wait no more than 15 minutes for late guests

  • Private Horseback Ride in Malibu
High Horse Malibu offers private horseback rides in one of the most secluded and scenic areas in Malibu, California. Uniquely situated at the crest of Latigo Canyon, our trails traverse rolling hills, wooded canyons, and striking rock formations, with sweeping ocean vistas around every corner. Our exceptional horses combined with the uniquely beautiful coastal Mediterranean habitat of the Santa Monica Mountains provide our guests with an opportunity to disconnect from the world and reconnect with nature and self. Other things to note If you plan to take an Uber or other ride share service - please make arrangements for pick up PRIOR to being dropped off! It is difficult (sometimes impossible) to get cell service at the ranch! RIDER WEIGHT LIMIT 210lbs. We suggest wearing long pants (wear shorts at your own risk)! Riders must wear closed toed shoes - boots are great but tennis shoes will work! On sunny days you might want to wear sunscreen or a lightweight long sleeve shirt.

  • Explore the Mountains on Horseback
You will start your adventure at Sunny Dust Ranch where you will meet our wonderful tribe of animals. We will connect you with a horse based on your weight, energy, and experience level. While we are getting your horse ready, feel free to hang out with our dogs and chickens. We will take a moment to fill out waivers, give you a crash course riding demonstration, and we'll get you mounted and on our way. We'll explore the gorgeous Santa Monica mountains and possibly stumble across a family of deer. The trails are endless in our local mountains with over 8,000 acres of rolling tall-grass plains, oak savannahs and dramatic peaks with an abundance of local flora and fauna. You will certainly enjoy the peacefulness of the mountains with breathtaking panorama views during a guided intimate ride with our happy horses. Other things to note Please be on time! Plan on arriving 10 minutes early and keep LA traffic in mind, we allow a 15 minute grace period. If there is a time/date that you don’t see available, send us a private message!

  • Stand up Paddle Board in Malibu
We will take you on an amazing paddle board guided tour through the most beautiful beaches in Malibu. We offer incredible experiences for all levels: first-timers to seasoned paddle boarders. All gear is provided. For first timers, your first 15 minutes will be a lesson on the beach to go over all of the basics of paddle boarding, and then out on the water to get comfortable on your board, and then paddle up the coast for the rest of your time. You will be surprised how easy it is to pick up. For the more experienced paddle boarders, we offer longer, more experienced tours for you to see the beautiful coastline of Malibu while getting a great workout at the same time. I also bring a GoPro camera and take pictures and videos of your experience. Come out for a beautiful sunset paddle at my 5:00pm-7:00pm time slot. Other things to note Bring a bathing suit, sunscreen and a towel. Everything else will be provided.

Your guide to Malibu

All About Malibu

Malibu might be California's only seaside town whose residents are as famous as its beaches. This photogenic slice of sand and surf fits firmly into the Los Angeles ethos: It’s beautiful, breezy, and irresistible. Here, celebrity homes and beachfront retreats have overlooked one of Southern California's most pristine coastlines since the 1930s. As Malibu has grown in status and fame, it has added flashy see-and-be-seen restaurants but somehow still retains the quaint charm of a small town. Its 20 square miles contain more than three dozen beaches, and choosing the right one is important. If waves and tan lines aren’t your thing, however, Malibu is hemmed in by the Santa Monica Mountains, which beckon trail runners, hikers, and wild animals.

How do I get around Malibu?

Malibu is located near the western edge of Los Angeles County, 18 miles west of Santa Monica, on the iconic Pacific Coast Highway. The most convenient airport to fly into is Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which is 29 miles away. Expect it to take approximately one hour to make the trip by car due to frequent traffic in the area. Taxis and rideshares are both available at this busy airport; there’s also a bus that takes approximately two hours. Oxnard Airport (KOXR) is a smaller airport served by a few commercial flights, but its location 30 miles to the north means you can reach Malibu in 40 minutes by car.

When is the best time to stay in a vacation rental in Malibu?

Malibu's weather is flat-out gorgeous. Thanks to its Mediterranean climate, almost any time of year is a good time to visit. If you're looking for the classic golden sun and swimsuit weather, then July through September are the ideal months to visit, with average highs in the mid-70s Fahrenheit but plenty of days rising into the 80s. This is peak season, so be sure to book well in advance. The coldest months are December through February, with temperatures often dipping into the 40s, though you'll still get rogue warm days. Winter is often pleasant enough for you to take advantage of the local bluffs and mountains, but summer and fall are best for water sports.

What are the top things to do in Malibu?

Point Dume Nature Preserve

The long, craggy bluff jutting into the Pacific Ocean known as Point Dume has become a Malibu icon. It's an ideal perch from which to watch the sunset or, from December to April, spot migrating gray whales. The preserve is connected to a state beach that's popular for swimming, scuba diving, and long scenic walks. Point Dume also abuts another not-to-be-missed Malibu attraction: Zuma Beach.

Paradise Cove

One of the most notable beaches in Malibu delivers a one-two punch: prime beach real estate and a cafe with ocean-view seating that is nearly as coveted. People line up early to stake out a table. To the east is a row of Malibu mansions clinging to coastal bluffs, and to the west, a stretch of sandstone cliffs tailor-made for sunset strolls.

Escondido Falls

At 150 feet tall, Escondido Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in Southern California, and the trail leading up to it offers a refreshing shady break from worshipping the sun. The waterfall’s three tiers cascade down a series of limestone ledges. To reach it, tread the 3.8-mile moderate trail from Winding Way East. The reward will be worth it.
