Sail on the Schooner Fame of Salem

Haul up the sails! Take the tiller! Or just chill with an adult beverage while our historic schooner slides through Salem Sound past lighthouses, forts, and waterfront homes. We'll motor out from Pickering Wharf in downtown Salem and call for volunteers to help raise the sails. Depending on the wind, we may shape a course toward Beverly, Marblehead, or head straight out toward the islands! Our interactive crew point out landmarks, explain the operation of the schooner, and mix drinks with equal facility. The captain and crew will explain the significance of the FAME, privateering, and the War of 1812. The firing of the cannon is always a highlight! The sails last roughly an hour and forty minutes. When we return to Pickering Wharf, you're right in the heart of downtown Salem — perfectly placed for a meal, a drink, or a stroll! Note: We will not sail if steady rain, high winds, or thick fog are expected; you will be refunded. If do we cancel a sail, we will reach out to you thru air bnb. Dress for the weather — you are exposed to the elements on our 1812 schooner! This trip is NOT appropriate for infants or toddlers. But once kids are 5 years old, they really enjoy it! The schooner is certified for 49 passengers plus crew. But since 2021 we are sailing at 60% capacity, which means there will be a maximum of 30 guests on your sail.

The When and If was originally built for General Patton and has a long history in the Salem Sound waters, we love sharing her story and historical significance so please don't hesitate to ask! We also invite any questions about how the boat operates and what it takes to sail a Schooner, and we love to share our local knowledge of Salem Sound and its surrounding waters and ocean-life. We return to the dock two hours after leaving, and our guests will depart from the same location they from which they boarded the When and If.

Coastal walking tour

I offer walking tours of coastal, scenic natural beauty. You will discover conservation land, local beaches, charming coves, islands, hidden lanes, ponds, spectacular harbor views, charming architecture and a colonial burying ground. Focus is on the scenery and coastline, but history and local folklore are inevitable in any walk around Marblehead. We will concentrate on the very oldest part of the old fishing village, and walk on lanes, paths, and sand bars that you'll only find with a local guide. Other things to note This is a walking tour of approximately 2 miles or 1.5 hours. Can be modified according to guests' needs and preferences. There are limited bathroom facilities, hills, sandy and rocky terrain.

Literary Marblehead Walking Tour

The Literary Marblehead walking tour is a meander along the lanes, coves, beaches, and islands of the old fishing village. The walk will include storytelling, history, traditions, and beautiful scenery. You will be introduced to two fictional characters, Hesper Honeywood from the historical romance The Hearth and Eagle by Anja Seton, and Azor Orne from the Azor books by Maude Crowley. You will see the old town through their eyes and walk through the scenes of their stories. The tour includes the tale of rowing an escaped slave to safety via the Underground Railroad,. Other things to note This is walk of about 2 miles, over uneven terrain, old streets, rocks, and sand. It is not at all strenuous, but guests should be prepared with appropriate shoes. Allow enough time to park your car.

You'll explore Gloucester harbor and beyond aboard a very comfortable 36-foot Sailing Yacht. This will be a small group sail for up to 6 individuals. If you would like it to be a private sail please book 6 spots! You can choose to take an active role in sailing this boat and learn the "ropes" of sailing or just sit back and enjoy the amazing experience. We'll sail by Ten Pound Island, Niles Beach, the Dog Bar, and much more... We can also anchor and swim for a little while! Light refreshments and snacks will be offered. Longer charters and overnight experiences in Gloucester and other ports can be arranged. Birdwatching at Middlesex Fells

After quick personal introductions, and outfitting everyone with binocular sets, we will cover quick basics on binocular use. Some quick tips will help you practice, so you don't miss the good birds (you need to be fast, because the birds are fast). We will set out on foot to explore different habitats in the Fells in search of the diverse bird species residing or migrating through. As we see birds, we will not their ID characteristics including, colors, shape, behaviors, and songs. For our tour, we will develop a count-list of all the birds we observe (by sight and sound), and afterwards our observations will be entered into the eBird online database, where they can be used by scientists to understand bird population changes in the Fells. This tour can run at any time of year, although March-October is best. Currently the Fells has 163 documented species. Let's see if we can add some. If you do not see a date and time fits your schedule, send an inquiry or request to me. I might be able to make the schedule work for you or your group.
