Essentials

Texans love H-E-B with a cult-like following. Their fresh tortillas & Mexican pastries are to die for and I've found more varieties of salsa than I ever did in my hometown Kansas City. There's even a small beer & food hall in this Mueller H-E-B.

Specialty grocery store carrying H-E-B's gourmet brand. Fantastic bulk coffee & dry goods section, wine, beer & produce. I buy my coffee here (after sampling all the smells). You can catch live music on the patio almost daily during the summer, and enjoy beer/wine on-site.

Food scene

Opened by Arthur Franklin, the creator of Austin’s legendary Franklin’s BBQ, and Tyson Cole of sushi spot Uchi. Reasonably priced $10-20 plates, cheaper than their upscale namesakes. I always take departing friends/family on the way to the airport.

Open 24/7. I highly recommend customizing a taco with crispy duck & chorizo. Tyson's has a funky covered patio or take your creation to-go and watch one of Austin's beautiful sunsets on Mount Bonnell.

I’m a volunteer with Keep Austin Fed, a nonprofit of food rescue delivery drivers that gather surplus food from restaurants, grocery stores, etc and deliver it to area charities serving people in need. Upper Crust was our first regular donor. They have great cinnamon rolls and have been a neighborhood favorite since 1984.

One of the best taco trucks in Austin! Veracruz has excellent vegetarian & breakfast tacos. Opened by sisters Reyna and Maritza Vazquez in 2008, Veracruz has locations in East & South Austin, Mueller & the Line Hotel downtown. Their South location is co-located at Radio Coffee & Beer - a coffeehouse & bar with an excellent patio.

Opened in 1992, neighborhood staple for pizza & sandwiches. Recommend their veggie (Avocado, marinated artichoke hearts, roasted eggplant, mozzarella, provolone, cheddar, onions, tomatoes, lettuce and tapenade, served on kaiser roll.)

Must try for vegans & non-vegans alike. Artfully crafted plant-based cheeses - havarti dill, smoked cheddar, etc, served on sandwiches or to-go.

Entertainment

Show up early at 10am when the market opens - it’s much less crowded! Lots of food vendors with free samples. The overnight oats inside the pavilion are my favorite.
