Lisbon was without a major department store after the 1988 Chiado fire destroyed two – until the Spanish chain El Corte Inglés opened its Lisbon branch in 2001. It includes cinemas, restaurants and ample parking as well as departments from stationery to surfwear. The store has a more upmarket image in Portugal than in Spain, providing good service and a money-back guarantee.
