Enjoy the cool breeze from the ocean! Juan and Estela's cabañas lie in a beautiful grove on a sandy bluff overlooking the beach just south of Tehualmixtle, a small fishing cove in the middle of nowhere. It has no electricity--just water, an outdoor cooking area and 'tranquilidad.' It is well off the dirt road, so no dust or noise--only the sound of wildlife and waves. And Juan and Estela are natural hosts, deeply rooted in and knowledgeable about the land and incredibly caring and friendly.
There are three cabañas at "El Buque." Each has its own bathroom with shower, toilet and sink. There is no internet or cell reception and cold water only. You can arrange to use the hotel's internet next door or check your messages at Juan and Estella's house. There is a beautiful outdoor clay oven/stove for cooking. La Tortuga also has a gas tank and stove, along with basic cooking implements and dishes. The cabin is named after the local tortoises who lay their eggs on the beach. A great activity is to go and help with the release of hatchlings that is run by a local conservationists. The grove is on a small bluff just up from the beach. Two of the cabañas, including La Tortuga, overlook the ocean, the other one is snuggled behind and has an ocean view. There is a trail down to the gorgeous beach. This is one of the most peaceful and quiet places in Mexico. By the time the dry season starts, in Mid-December or so, there are very few mosquitoes and by late January, even fewer. The cabaña is screened and there are also mosquito nets for the individual beds. For MEX$30 pesos, Juan and Esthela will provide you with a garafon of water (20 liters). If you plan to cook and are coming by car, it is a good idea to bring a cooler. Another great idea is to ask Pepe, Juan and Esthela's son, who is a talented cook who worked in a Chinese restaurant in California for years, to cater a meal for you and your family. His Chinese food is fabulous but... nothing beats his classic Mexican ceviche.
Overview of the Area, Food, Things to Do The cabañas are just north of Villa Del Mar and 4km south of Tehualmixtle in the Cabo de Tuito Selva. It is a 5 minute walk to Villa, where you can pick up basic foodstuff and water at the local stores. Villa del Mar is part of Cabo Corrientes and the Selva de Tuito. The Selva between Tuito and Villa is amazingly beautiful. 'Selva' means jungle but this area is really more woodsy, with deciduous trees and shrubs, and very mountainous. This area is known for its risky currents and fierce undertow--there's good swimming in nearby Tehua (and amazing fresh fish from a multitude of great restaurants). While the intensity of the ocean here gets in the way of swimming, it makes for amazing wave watching. Lie on the sand cliff the tide makes and watch the hermit crabs play chicken with the ocean, as the sun sets... or just sit and me lulled into peace by the pounding waves. Go horseback-riding with Juan (or by yourself if you are experienced) for US$10 andhour. Want more relaxing? Estela is an excellent and very experienced massage therapist--she does deep tissue and relaxation. The charge is $500 MXN (~$25 US). Her daughter-in-law, Blanquita (wife of Pepe the amazing cook) gives wonderful facials and facial massages. You'll look 5 years younger. Esthela or Blanca can bring their massage table to your cabaña, or you can have a massage in the palapa that overlooks the beach. The beach is beautiful, so beautiful it is easy to forget the gorgeous mountains! Rent a quad or horse and investigate the amazing Selva. It is not a tropical jungle but woodsy and fascinatingly beautiful in its own way. (And yes, of course, you can also ride on the beach!) Hungry? Esthela will definitely offer you food if you come by their house. It is delicious. Ask Pepe to cater you a meal or more. The two-story orange house at the crossroads of the little town sells tacos on Saturday and Sunday nights. Just come up to the door and ask for as many as you would like. They are amazing! From the grove, you can see the lights of a small fishing village, Tehualmixtle. (Locals often call it Tay-Wah.) This is an unusual spot along the coast because it is sheltered from the rough waves and fierce undertow typical of the area. Swimming at Tehua is delightful. And so are the seafood and oysters sold at the local restaurants--fresh-caught that day. This is also where you want to go to charter a fishing boat, of course. Another great watering hole is the Rinconcito in Mayto--relaxed, excellent food, often lots of Americans and Canadians. Closer to you--next door in fact--is a more posh hotel/restaurant called El Cielito. For a fee you can log into your internet there and catch up. The restaurant has an awesome view.
  • We had a great stay at the cabaña. The views from the very comfortable terrace are amazing and having a private beach all to your self is something special. Estella is a great cook, be sure to ask for the puerco, delicious and everything from their own land.

  • This place is so worth the trek to get to it! I stayed in "la tortuga" cabana overlooking the beach! These hosts are so great and have delicious authentic food. If you want a place far removed from tourists and traffic this is it! And the hotel next door has a decent pool and restaurant that takes credit card. Relaxing, bird watching from the hammock, sunsets, and swimming in Tehuah. Couldn't ask for a better stay! And the host Juan took me horseback riding twice!! I will be back very soon.. Amazing off the grid authentic Mexican experience!!

  • Off the grid, but close to a friendly little town, expect rustic with exceptional beauty. Loved my stay.

    Patrice2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Each time we stay at Juan & Estella's place we love it more, this is a rustic cabin overlooking the ocean, no electricity but they have recently installed solar lights which was a nice touch since we like to play cards. Can't say enough about how wonderful Juan & Estella are, lovely people!

  • Just a min walk down to the private beach. Nice and clean. Very peaceful place.

  • This is most amazing and special place ever. The view, the sounds, the hosts-incredible experience. I can’t wait to go back!

  • We had an absolutely wonderful stay with Juan and Estela. Our spacious cabana was situated on a bluff overlooking the ocean- we watched whales, dolphins, fish and birds from out porch while we drank cowboy coffee percolated on the adobe fire place. The sunsets were amazing and the beach below went on for miles. Juan and Estela are beautiful people with incredibly welcoming hearts. We appreciated greatly their hospitality and generosity. We can’t wait to visit again!

    Katie2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • Juan and Estelle go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable and quiet. They offer a kindness that makes you feel like a part of their family. The pictures don’t do the place justice in reality. It was truly amazing and we hope that anyone who chooses to venture that way in Mexico to stop in and share breakfast with such a warm family!

  • Great apartment (spotless, well appointed) in a really nice quiet town. Right on the beach. They have just installed a big 2nd story patio which is a great spot to relax when the sun gets too hot and has a great view. Beach is spectacular and practically empty. Food in town is very good- this town sees a lot of domestic tourists so no watered down Mexican food here. I would return and will stay with Chris again.

Colibri Hotel in Mayto is a small, bright, breezy, bohemian styled hotel nestled at the foot of a hill that steps off directly into the warm sand with access to 2 crystalline virgin beaches. This particular room (F) offers a 2nd floor entrance with a view of Lover’s Beach and 1 full size bed. A/C and WiFi in room. Upon your arrival you’ve become family! Welcome home, we can't wait to meet you!
The space can comfortably accommodate 2 adults in the 1 full size bed. A/C in room, hot and cold water in the shower. People visit from around the world for the tranquility and abundant nature, so to inspire you to go outside and disconnect during your stay we do not have TV’s in the rooms. There is, however, WiFi. Please note there is an additional cost for additional guests over (1). Wildlife is abundant here. It’s great for fishing, bird watching, the occasional lizard will visit (sometimes even in the rooms) and during turtle season there’s a turtle camp down the beach that does daily baby turtle releases. In rainy season you’ll be up close and personal with crabs, they’re deaf and hilarious if you’re into that’s sort of thing. If you enjoy snorkeling you’ll have a great view in the water near the rocks, good enough even for spear fishing! During whale migration season you’ll have a front row seat to see them pass with their families and often times we get passing dolphins and jumping sting rays too. On occasion the sea has bioluminescent plankton that lights up the sand and sea at night, that is absolutely spectacular, but also random. The neighboring hotels have food service, and a small restaurant in town delivers to our guests, but keep in mind that there are no ATM’s or banks nearby so make sure to get your cash in Puerto Vallarta before coming down. There is also an amazing fishing village about 8 minutes away with stellar seafood and world class oysters. Our neighbor hotel has bar service as well and is about 30 seconds walk from your door. We do not have a swimming pool, but there are a few neighboring hotels that do and they offer day passes for the use of their facilities. Keep in mind that beaches are unpredictable. It could be as calm as a swimming pool or the wind could pick up and there be huge crashing waves. Both are stunning, but there’s no telling what you’ll get. Also the summer here is very hot nd humid, but as I mentioned before the room is equipped with A/C.
We have a view of ‘Lovers Beach’ to the South and Mayto beach (14 km of virgin beach) in front. A short walk down the beach gets you to the turtle camp. There are a few small kitchens in town and 4 ‘tienditas’ or town stores also. About 8 minutes South (driving) is Tehuamixtle which is our favorite place to eat seafood. They also have Kayak rentals there or you can rent a ‘panga’ by the hour if you want to get out on the ocean. If you come to surf, there are a few secret beaches between 15-30 mins away we can help guide you to. Mayto beach itself is great for skimboarding. If you’re looking for a fishing tour we have an amazing contact, but he books up quickly so let us know with as much time as possible to connect you. We also have a masseuse from a few towns over that can come give you a massage on the beach (subject to availability).

  • I absolutely loved my stay! The Airbnb is steps from the beach (actually, located right on the sand), the room is comfortable (with great AC and a strong fan, plus an incredible view of the ocean), and has everything you need (a little armoire with a place to hang clothes or put them in drawers, coffee and tea station in the hall). Jennifer is a great host! I will definitely be back, and loved that I could bring my dog with me.

  • I want to say all kinds of bad things about this place.... so I can keep it all to myself! What a place! Quiet.... Safe...... Beautiful..... Friendly. I live in Puerto Vallarta and this is a hideaway from what I consider paradise.... It's the paradise of paradises. If you are looking for eggs bennie and fine dining and a bidet in your bathroom, this is not the place. If you are looking for a relaxed, remote and safe place to bring the kids, the dog and granny it is the best ever.... It is now on my official must see must do for most of my friends that come to visit.

  • I don’t know what else to say apart from the fact that it was just as magic as we hoped it would be. Given the tension in the world news, the friendliness and relaxed attitude we encountered was a godsend. Jennifer and the team were incredibly, accommodating. Mayto is not for everyone. The few hotels are all charmingly rustic, no TVs , no valet off a dusty road. Which is precisely why I love it more than almost any place I’ve been. The bio luminescent beach, the open expansive beach, and the gracious hospitality. For those who want solitude and Beauty at a great price, you cant ask for a better Place.

  • Jennifer was very responsive and super helpful. Everything was perfect! Mayto is amazing itself but the Colibri Hotel as well. It's clean, has great balconies, is next to the beach and has everything you may need! I definitely will come back, this is a piece of paradise there! Thanks for everything Jennifer!!

Colibri Hotel in Mayto is a small, bright, breezy, bohemian styled hotel nestled at the foot of a hill that steps off directly into the warm sand with access to 2 crystalline virgin beaches. This particular room (A) offers a 1st floor entrance with a private bathroom and 3 full size beds. There are comfortable Adirondack type wooden chairs outside the room for your outdoor lounging. Upon your arrival you’ve become family! Welcome home, we can't wait to meet you!
The space can comfortably accommodate 6 adults in the 3 full size beds. There is A/C in the rooms and hot and cold water in the shower. People visit from around the world for the tranquility and abundant nature, so to inspire you to go outside and disconnect during your stay we do not have TV’s in the rooms. There is, however, WiFi. Wildlife is abundant here. It’s great for bird watching, the occasional lizard will visit (sometimes even in the rooms) and during turtle season there’s a turtle camp down the beach that does daily baby turtle releases.

Juan and Estela's cabañas lie in a beautiful grove on a sandy bluff overlooking the beach just south of Tehualmixtle, a small fishing village about two hours' drive from Puerto Vallarta. It has no electricity--just water, a clay outdoor stove, and 'tranquilidad.' It is well off the road, so no road dust or noise--unless you count the sound of the waves. And Juan and Estela are natural hosts, deeply rooted in and knowledgeable about the land and incredibly caring and friendly.
There are three cabañas at "El Buque." Each has its own bathroom with shower, toilet and sink. There is no electricity, internet or cell reception and cold water only. (But internet access is available locally.) There is an outdoor barbecue for cooking. Of the three, Dolphin might be the best for families with small children because it is set back from the bluff. The grove is on a small bluff just up from the beach. Two of the cabañas overlook the ocean, the other one is snuggled behind and has an ocean view. There is a trail down to the gorgeous beach. Often you will be the only person there. By the time the dry season starts, in Mid-December or so, there are very few mosquitoes and by late January, virtually none.
Overview of the Area, Food, Things to Do The cabañas are just north of Villa Del Mar and 4km south of Tehualmixtle in the Cabo de Tuito Selva. It is a 5 minute walk to Villa, where you can pick up basic foodstuff and water at the local stores. \ Villa del Mar is part of Cabo Corrientes and the Selva de Tuito. The Selva between Tuito and Villa is amazingly beautiful. 'Selva' means jungle but it is really more woodsy and very mountainous. Rent a kayak from El Cielito and explore the estuary or go horseback-riding with Juan (or by yourself if you are experienced) for $5 and hour. Want more relaxing? Estela is an excellent and very experienced massage therapist--she does deep tissue and relaxation. She can bring her massage table to your cabaña. The charge is $500 MXN (~$25 US). The beach is beautiful, so beautiful it is easy to forget the gorgeous mountains! Rent a quad or horse (from Juan, $10/hour) and investigate the amazing Selva. It is not a tropical jungle but rather woodsy and fascinatingly beautiful in its own way. (And yes, of course, you can also ride on the beach!) Hungry? Esthela will definitely offer you something to eat if you come by their house. It's delicious! And so are the seafood and oysters sold at the local restaurants--fresh caught that day.
  • Amazing jungle bungalow. Super friendly on property hosts. Beautiful semi-private beach access. A few things to consider... There is no hot water, cell service or internet. There is indoor plumbing, outdoor cooking and solar lighting. This is jungle glamping on steroids.

    Vianney2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Oh, I so love this place! I happened to be here during a torrential down-pour, probably the last of the season. The rain on the pallapa roof was enchanting. I was last here in March and the place is even more beautiful. Juan and Esthella are wonderful, of course. Their adorable daughter Blanca will communicate super-efficiently (and kindly) with you in preparation for your trip. Come, relax, watch the waves and stars and raptors and whales, eat fresh fish in Tehua....

    Carie2020-01-03T00:00:00Z

  • A true gem. Wonderful location. Juan, Estella, and Carrie (who is staying with them) were all wonderful

    Amy2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • Juan's cabins in Villa del Mar are simply a world apart. Our small group loved our quiet night spent cooking on the clay fire, listening to the crashing waves and observing the starry skies. The atmosphere and scenery is breathtaking and is aided by the absence of TV, electricity, etc. An unforgettable experience. Juan and his wife are incredibly friendly and hospitable, really as nice as can be. The cabin is basic but just perfect for the context. You don't need anything else. If you're driving, make sure to get really detailed directions and ask along the way ("Mayto/Villa del Mar es por aqui/por este camino?"). We got a little lost and had to drive on some crazy bumpy roads...all part of the adventure I guess. Anyway, if you love nature and want to see a truly virgin beach before it fills up with tourism, don't miss this place!

    Charlie2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • A very special place for those ready to rough it. Please note, there is no longer bus service to this location- you have to take a 40 minute taxi ride. But worth it!

    Anne2020-02-13T00:00:00Z
  • Simple cabañas atop a secluded hillside overlooking the beach and ocean...what more could you ask for on vacation??? Juan and Estella are the perfect hosts. We never want to leave...a cooler is most helpful, and a car to explore the areas nearby. Horseback riding and massages/facials are wonderful too!

    Sharla2020-02-04T00:00:00Z
  • Juan and Estella are the salt of the earth! We feel like family every time we visit El Buque. It’s our annual “slice of paradise” and the ultimate way to “unplug” from the stresses of everyday life. The sound of the waves, beautiful sunsets, swinging in the hammock, horseback rides up the mountains and on the beach are ever etched in your mind and heart. Make sure you book a massage at your Cabaña. Estella has magical hands. Mayto and Tehua are just around the corner. Bring everything you need...think simple pleasures...❤️

    Sharla2020-01-31T00:00:00Z
  • It is hard to describe how relaxing and enjoyable it was to stay at Juan's place. The cabanas with their simplicity help you escape from the busy life and stay in touch with the nature. We enjoyed morning breakfasts cooked over the wood burning stove and the evenings spend watching the ocean in the moonlight. It is a genuine experience, not the one that is created by the tourist industry. Most importantly Juan and his wife are wonderful hosts and people. Spending time with them was a pleasure for us and our kids. In general, the place is clean, safe and with great location and viewes. Within short distance you have an access to small stores, restaurants, and a great beach for swimming. It is a secluded place with an easy access to essential services.

    Marcin2020-01-08T00:00:00Z
  • Peaceful, rustic, perfect

    Tara2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • To anyone looking for some real tranquility with an amazing location and some amazing folks, look no further. Juan and Estella were truly the kindest and warmest people we're encountered in all out time with AirBnB. This place feels truly isolated but is within walking distance to a hotel/restaurant and a short drive to nearby Tehuamixtle for supplies. The beach in front of you is a rare find these days, with endless walks unencumbered by people or development. Juan offers horseback rides along with beach and Estella provides a good relaxing massage, or you can just lay in the hammock and read. There is good whale watching during their migration and the summer months bring the turtles to the beach to nest. You won't be disappointed.

I love that it's dog-friendly, right in between Mayto's two beaches, and there's a restaurant downstairs. Perfect place for a weekend getaway from Puerto Vallarta. Absolutely recommend. • Stay here. Jennifer's place is a room with a balcony overlooking a little cove -- Lover's Beach -- on the most relaxed and beautiful corner of the Costalegre. My partner and I spent two nights here. It's in a hotel -- the Colibrí -- attached to a second hotel and restaurant run by a family from the area. Jennifer was an exceptional host, and Mari and Fernando's work with the bar and restaurant is top-notch. They are kind and thoughtful people. Mari even offered some care with a minor medical issue when my partner needed it. I really cannot thank them enough. In a week's stay on the Costalegre -- with stays in Manzanillo, La Manzanilla, Pérula, Mayto, and Puerto Vallarta -- our stay at Jennifer's place in the Colibrí was by far our favorite. The place gathers an eccentric and cool bunch of travelers and expats who have found themselves off the beaten path, and opted to stay. We understand why. We'll be back soon!

  • An excellent accommodation where you do not find anything other than hospitality, hospitality and a wonderful destination, we traveled as a group and others stayed in other places and without a doubt we fell because the best accommodation was the one that touched us, with a hostess Attentive and super accessible.

Colibri Hotel in Mayto is a small, bright, breezy, bohemian styled hotel nestled at the foot of a hill that steps off directly into the warm sand with access to 2 crystalline virgin beaches. This particular room (B) offers a 1st floor entrance with a private bathroom and 2 full size beds. There are comfortable Adirondack type wooden chairs outside the room for your outdoor lounging. Upon your arrival you’ve become family! Welcome home, we can't wait to meet you!
The space can comfortably accommodate 4 adults in the 2 full size beds.
  • Where to begin!? This place and the hosts are absolutely lovely! The room is adorable, has everything that you need, and I loved the small decorative touches around the place. The location is secluded and intimate. I stayed here for 4 nights and left feeling like a part of the family. The place that is right beside Colibri (this means "hummingbird" by the way) serves 2 meals a day at breakfast and dinner time, and the food was delicious. (I am a vegetarian and they were able to accommodate my needs.) There are other food options around as well but I found myself eating the 2 offered meals most days because they were so yummy. Jenny and Victor live on the property as well and were gracious hosts that went above and beyond to make sure I had a wonderful experience while staying at their beautiful home. I will definitely be staying here again soon and have already recommended it to so many people. If you are looking for an intimate and breathtaking location to unwind with a comfortable place to rest your head at night after you have spend all day exploring and relaxing on the beach, look no further, this is your place!

  • Close enough to the beach to drip dry before you get home -- the place is open and ample for a big family beach reunion. The kitchen is great for frying up whatever you catch, and the house is close to the local fish cooperatives if your fishing game is down you can still eat like a king. The beach here is amazing, great for kids, with small waves and no tide. This is the perfect disconnect from the modern world. Wish we could have stayed a month.
