Taste Korea’s traditionally home-brewed rice liquor, makgeolli, with me, a sommelier and certified liquor production manager. • Meet in a hidden space inside Sool Society, a traditional bottle shop at Hapjeong Station, for a tasting of six types of makgeolli. • I’ll explain a little about the principles, history, and drinking culture in Korea, with a special focus on makgeolli, which has been brewed for centuries. • As you try each of the wines, I’ll share insights about each one’s unique flavor and fermentation method, and explain how they’re perfect for pairing with barbecue, fried foods, and spicy dishes. You’ll leave with my personalized recommendations for where to try more of your favorite makgeolli in Seoul, and with a rich appreciation for this easy-drinking beverage.

Learn how to make traditional makgeolli, the cloudy, sparkling Korean rice wine, in a hanok (traditional Korean house). We’ll taste the early results of the process as well as finished seasonal makgeolli. Along the way, I’ll share the wisdom of my ancestors’ fermentation traditions. • I’ll welcome you into the hanok, share the story of fermented liquor in Korea, and introduce the fundamentals of makgeolli and the fermentation process. • Make godubap (steamed rice), the foundation of our beverage, and add the nuruk—the yeasty grain cake that jump-starts the process—and water. • I’ll demonstrate how to filter the alcohol and we’ll taste the undiluted results, called wonju. We’ll also sample seasonal varieites of makgeolli, and I’ll answer any questions you may have. You’ll leave with insights into Korea’s healthy fermented food culture, and the skills to easily apply the techniques you’ve learned at home.

We, Koa & Sam, are outdoor fanatics—and we are probably some of the friendliest people you will meet in Korea. (According to 5,000+ people who came before you) First stop is a traditional market and it's our snack time. Here, we will sample local snacks Koreans love to eat. (Not all, but some are vegan friendly!) Our hike will take place along the ancient fortress that was built on Inwangsan mountain about 600 years ago. We'll get to see how stunning Seoul looks from above. We'll sit down at a peak and gaze at the sunset. The hike lasts about 90 minutes, and we'll reach a peak at 240 meters (780 feet) above sea level. This is suitable for most people but if you have trouble with walking, probably this isn't suitable for you. Then head over to a legendary noodle & dumpling restaurant in a lantern-lit alley.
