Places to stay in Sayward

Places to stay in Sayward
Our cozy lodge is nestled in the woods just outside Sayward on British Columbia's beautiful Vancouver Island. It is the perfect place to relax after a day of adventuring, skiing, hunting, or working. If you're looking for a place to vacation, a location for a retreat, or a place to unwind after a day of work, we have what you need. This private room has a great view on clear days! There is a bathroom just across the hall. You have access to all the common areas including the games room.
Abundant opportunities for excitement and relaxation start at our front door. There is a small waterfall onsite, and elk often visit our lawn. You can walk to the Salmon River from our door, and there are a wide range of hikes nearby. Canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hunting, paddle boarding, golfing, downhill and cross-country skiing, whale watching, or even just admiring some huge trees, it's all accessible from right here.
  • We spent a night in this big house similar to a hostel. There are many rooms and travelers. We had a room with private bathroom, it was spacious, comfortable and clean. We had access to many common rooms including a large kitchen and dining room very well equipped. The house is located in a beautiful setting on a large lot bordered by forest. Our host was friendly and immediately put us at ease despite our late arrival time.

  • Great location and very friendly staff and goats!

  • Large house with several bedrooms and large games room (billiards, table football, ping pong), wilderness in the North of the island. We saw black bears on the surrounding trails. Julie, her boyfriend and the kids are very happy and friendly, dogs and cats too. Beautiful location to discover the wild side of the island.

  • A lovely hostel-type set-up tucked back in the woods a few miles outside Sayward. We had a great room that was very comfortable, and Julie was very nice and welcoming. We got out on some of the trails in the area, and the Salmon Estuary Trail and Port Kusam Trails were both great to explore.

  • Good spot!

  • We were driving up the island and needed a place to stay overnight. This place was really clean with friendly staff.

  • We had a lovely 1 night stay here after a few days exploring the northern tip of the island. The welcome was friendly & we were made to feel comfortable around other guests when using the social areas. Our bed was VERY comfortable with high quality sheets and the room had nice lighting with a cosy & remote controlled fire, it was a nice finish to a busy trip! Thank you Julie for a pleasant stay in a beautiful setting!

  • Very beautiful place, very clean and proper, Julie is very helpful, she gave me lots of suggestions on local trails. Highly recommended!

  • What a lovely place right on the waterfront in Sayward. We could see whales passing by from the room. The complimentary home made muffin (the size of a workman’s hand!) was to die for. If that was representative for the quality of the cafe (which was closed in October) then the cafe is a must! Will definitely be back!

Salmon River Guesthouse is located in the heart of the Sayward Valley on Northern Vancouver Island. Built in the 1930's as the residence of the general store, the house has been gently modernized and renovated but still maintains much of its original character and charm. The Meadow Room overlooks our beautiful meadow and barn. There are four rooms available, please inquire if you have a group wanting to book an entire house. Farm house breakfast included, eggs provided by our resident chickens.
The guesthouse is situated on 32 acres of pasture and over 1000 feet of riverfront. Spend you day wandering the meadows, walking the river trail or swimming from the lawn in front of the house. The water is cold but very refreshing on warm days!
The Salmon River Guesthouse is situated on the river in Sayward BC. The village of Sayward is a couple of miles down the road, just beyond that is the port of Kelsey Bay. There are many miles of walks in the area. There is a farmers market on Saturday mornings.

  • This is a great bed and breakfast right on the Salmon River. Ideal for fishermen or other outdoorsy types. Beautiful gardens and fruit trees in yard and chickens running around. Breakfast is top notch and the hosts are very nice and knowledgeable about the local area.

  • Fantastic house in a gorgeous remote valley, in the middle of the nature. Calm, cosy and friendly. We spent one more night than expected, enjoyed the view on the mountain and the tasty breakfast (the host can cook as well the diner on demand!). Ideal stop if you plan to split the road in between south and north of Vancouver Island. We'll definitely come again!

The Sayward Valley is known as nature’s playground and adventure awaits around every corner – hiking, rafting, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, caving, wildlife watching, beach combing, mountain climbing or viewing some of the biggest trees in the world. Some of the best whale-watching and bear-watching sites in the Pacific North-West are easily accessible from the Sayward area. More sedate activities include visiting one of the nearby bird sanctuaries, walking along the easy Dalrymple trail loop or merely sitting in the shade or on one of the sandy beaches along the Salmon River. The Sayward Valley is a photographer’s paradise – the rugged scenery, the wildlife, the stunning vistas all provide wonderful opportunities for the shutterbug. The weather in the Central Vancouver Island area is some of the most pleasant and moderate in Canada. There are plenty of warm, dry sunny days from late April through to the end of October to enjoy all the outdoor activities. Even the winters are relatively mild, with most daytime highs above the freezing mark. With two ski resorts within easy driving distance and local opportunities for Nordic skiing and snow-shoeing, not to mention winter-time photography, wildlife viewing and beach combing, the adventures are year-round.

  • Clean, cozy place that felt like home. Lots of space to spread around. It really had everything you need, including toiletries and snacks, a great selection of movies for a rainy day. Nice view from the window. Just one step outside and you get a great view of the Hkusam mountan. Location was perfect. Quiet, peaceful, inspiring views. Little hikes around the property, and a private beach! Carol and Ken were amazing hosts. They definitely went over and beyond in making my stay as enjoyable as possible. They are very knowledgeable about the area and can recommend good hikes, lookouts, places to eat and other points of interest. Thanks Carol and Ken!

Rustic and relaxing, this is your chance to stay in a remote cabin on the seashore in the Broughton Archipelago at the mouth of Knight Inlet. Arrive here by your own boat is by far the best option, or by water taxi or float plane. The peace and quiet is only disturbed by the occasional noise of the generator to charge up the batteries at the main lodge. Fishing, crabbing & prawning is spectacular here. Loads of lingcod, salmon, and halibut. A freezer with portable generator is available.
The Eagle Loft cabin has running water with a full bathroom including a shower with hot water! Use a portable generator to power the cabin or use without electricity makes for a true unplugged get away. There is also a gas cook stove, equipped kitchen (minus the fridge), dining table and dishware. A cooler would be adequate to store food and drinks as the marina nearby has ice. Coolers can be provided upon request. A deep freeze is available for those wishing to freeze their catch! It is run by a portable generator and is available for a fee. This generator can also provide power to the loft cabin if desired. If you prefer full meal service, the lodge owner is happy to cook and serve meals for a fee. Must be arranged at time of booking. ($100/person/day) The Eagle Loft cabin has a fantastic view from the deck and the property has lots of green space to enjoy with a fire pit and barbecue. As this is out in the wilderness, there are occasional mice that find there way into the cabin, so all food and garbage must be contained. This is bear country and several bears have been spotted on the shore and property over the years. Air horns, bear spray and bear bells are provided in the cabin. There are also pods of porpoises, orcas, humpbacks and sea lions that swim by in the Channel....perhaps you’ll get lucky and spot a few during your stay. Hike up an old trail to some lakes, explore the area by boat, historic Minstrel Island and Lagoon Cove Marina are only 10 minutes by boat. If you’re lucky, try your hand at prawning or crabbing and enjoy the feast for dinner that night. Life is good up here in the wild North coast. Great spot for kayakers to stay, (sorry the lodge doesn’t have any kayaks for guest use), and tent camping is also a fun option.
Beautiful and remote, Chatham Channel cove is close to Minstrel Island and Lagoon Cove Marina. It is located within the Broughton Archipelago and at the mouth to Knight Inlet. Flights available out of Campbell River or arrange for water taxi pick up north of Sayward.
  • Camille was a great host. The area was so beautiful .We had fun exploring the area and the helpful tips she gave us made it that much more. We loved the cabin . We felt so comfortable. The cabin was spotless and everything we needed was available to us. What a wonderful place to spend some time. We will return for sure.. We loved our stay with Camille.

  • Fantastic location and accommodation

    Kelly2019-06-16T00:00:00Z
  • Camille is a great host and an awesome person!! We had such a blast at the cabin we’re already planning to go again next year. With hot water and a great kitchen it is the perfect spot to get away and explore the surrounding area. The inlet where the cabin is located is spectacular and very peaceful. Looking forward to seeing you again next year Camille! Thanks from all of us.

    Geoff2018-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • Great quiet location, very isolated. Sheltered from the elements, a true inshore coastal experience. Cabin is just as advertised, tidy and compact. Shared space inside but has four separate beds, three of them are in the loft and one couch turns into a bed. The kitchen has the essentials including running water and propane stove. Power is available with a generator, but we did not need it because we were off to bed early. Dock was made available for our boat. Camille was quick to respond and answered all our questions. She also packed us lunches and made us hearty breakfast as a separate service. I’d recommend to anybody who wants a rustic cabin experience with lots of sites to see nearby.

This off grid lakefront property is 0.4 acres and has it's own private lakefront on Upper Campbell lake. There is a also a communal boat launch walking distance from the cabin. Our Cabin is a 5 min drive from the Strathcona lodge and a 30 min drive from Campbell river. The main cabin sits on a cliff giving it amazing lake views. There is also a bunk house perched on another cliff that houses a single bed that can be used.
Our 1950s Cabin/cottage is 600 square foot with an upper floor/ loft containing one double bed and two single beds with new ikea mattresses. The living area downstairs has log rafters and a beautiful new wood stove. Wood will be provided and on site. The kitchen has an old propane stove with 4 burners. You will have to turn on the propane outside once you arrive so you can cook. The fridge (with working freezer) is also propane and will already be working when you arrive. The kitchen sink has hot water and upper bathroom has a working sink but no toilet. There is 3 solar panels charging 4 batteries giving guests electricity to light the interior lights. There is also 2 propane wall lamps. The only toilet present is in a lovely outhouse with flushing toilet and electricity, separate from the cabin but only a few feet from the cabin. The water is a boil water advisory or you can bring your own drinking water. Our cabin sits on a cliff with a newer deck with an amazing view of the lake. It also has a small one bedroom bunk house with a single bed if you wish to use it and it has its own flushable toilet. It also has a deck with amazing views of the lake. You can walk down forest steps to our private lakefront where you can take the 2 single kayaks provided or sit on the two lakefront chairs and watch the sunsets. Presently there is no dock and the lake front is rocky. There is a communal boat launch at the end of the road this cabin sits on. You can also launch the kayaks there. Please be aware that there are cliffs on this property, so if you have small children than this might not be the place for you. This of course is your choice. Dogs are welcome, but it is not fenced and you must keep control of your dog as we have neighbours.
This property is in a community of 20+ half acre lots so although it feels private, there are people around and is not isolated. It is also a 5 minute drive from the World renowned Strathcona Lodge.
  • We had some troubles with our car and the owners were very helpful. The house was amazing. Everything has been thought to have a good stay

  • Three Bears Cottage provides a cozy, off-grid place to stay, handy to Strathcona Park. The view from the deck is spectacular and Upper Campbell Lake is clear and great for swimming. The access to the beach is steep and rocky, and not suitable for small children or folks with mobility issues. Kirstie and Ben are thoughtful and considerate hosts.

    Eloise2019-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • Having stayed at Three Bears Cottage, my advice would be to book for longer than you think you’ll need. I slept for half my time there because it was so peaceful, quiet and comfortable! Excellent welcome and pre-arrival help from Kirstie to help my trip run smoothly. Beautiful setting, well equipped cabin and plenty of walks to do around. Great also to have the free kayaks for a little (or a big) paddle on the lake. A fantastic weekend all round.

    Hannah2019-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • Really special place and Kirstie was a friendly, helpful and generous host. Wonderful cabin fully equipped and tastefully furnished and decorated. Additional Bunk house served us as a sweet play area for the kids. Canoes at the privat lake access ready to explore Campbell Lake. No internet and cell phones a bonus this time to really calm down on the terrace or at the fireplace. Good homebase for hiking day trips in the Strathcona Park.

Cute and cozy cabin with a huge deck overlooking McIvor Lake. Western exposure means beautiful sunsets streaming down the lake between islands of Fir and Pine trees every night. Enjoy watching bald eagles from the deck after dinner or sitting by the wood fire stove and getting cozy. Sandy beach with great swimming and canoeing literally footsteps away. 15mins from all amenities in town and surrounded by some of the best fishing and wildlife viewing on the island!
Sleeps 4 people comfortably in two bedrooms. There is room for an additional 2 people on a pull out sofa bed. The cabin has no other suites/rentals and is self-contained. There is access to a sandy beach that is awesome for swimming as well as a dock about 50m from your front door. There is a canoe and small kayak available for your use at no charge as well. The land is several acres large and there are a total of 5 cabins spread throughout. In the summer months there are various RVs dispersed over the property.
Situated on beautiful McIvor Lake, Forbes Landing is a *private* lakefront acreage much sought after by local folks. Cabins and RV rentals are available on the property, at the strict discretion of the owner.
  • We spent 2 nights staying in one of the cabins at Forbes's place. The cabin was very spacious and clean, and we also used the kayaks provided by them. The overall experience was great and worth the value. Although the place is slightly far from the city centre, but it is not a problem if you have a car

    Edward2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • My partner and I and my parents spent 3 nights staying at this beautiful cabin outside Campbell river. The views are amazing, the cabin nice and cozy with a wood stove (which was already going for us on arrival) and fully stocked kitchen. We had easy access to elk falls and strathcona park. We hope to return again in the summer when we can spend more time sitting out on the deck overlooking the beautiful lake! Highly recommend this little sanctuary!

    Jen2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • Good location and fantastic views across the lake

    Val2019-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • If heaven was a place on earth it could be Forbes Landing on Upper Campbell Lake. With its interior, the breath taking lakeview from the large terrasse and stunning sundowns right in front of the terrasse, this cabin is just amazing and perfect for a longtime stay of 2 weeks like we had. Forbes Landing is kind of a trailer park with 5 cabins and several trailer lots spreaded over the land and with lots of space between them so you have enough privacy. We stayed the 2 first weeks in september in this cabin so the BC summer holidays were already over. Most of the time we were more or less completely for ourselves. When the weather was warm, there were a few more trailer residents there but all of them quiet and respectful. It was interesting to watch the few smaller boats, jet skis and even a waterplane at one day - interesting but never disturbing. We used the kayaks that belong to the cabins several times to explore some of the plenty beautiful island spread on the Upper Campbell Lake and it was just unforgettable. On warmer days we lay on the small beach that is only for residents of Forbes Landing. The water is absolutely clear and perfect to swim in. Even rainy days were amazing - sitting on one of the sofas in the large living room in front of the huge windows looking outside and enjoying the heat of the cozy fireplace. Right next to the cabin are also nice options for campfires with several chairs that we used several nights, just watching the incredible night sky with millions of stars and no light pollution. The cabin itself comfortably hosts 3 adults like us and has charming rustic interior like shown on the pictures. It has a warm atmosphere with lots of loving details. The sign "Memories made on the Lake, last a Lifetime" absolutely brings it to the point. The large living room with open kitchen leaves everyone enough space or brings all together on the large table. There is a TV but just for playing videogames. We used the big game collection instead and played Halma for example. With that view and surroundings you really don't need a TV and to stay connected to the world the WiFi works perfect. The kitchen is stuffed with everything you might need. Oven, microwave, toaster, coffeemachine, mixer and many more. There's a big choice of spices, meal and the owner Ruth even provided us a delicious pancake mix from her restaurant Popseys that is down in Campbell River - and by the way offers yummy breakfast and lunch as we can confirm. We got a choice of confiture and even some maple sirup from her. The cabin was clean and well maintained when we arrived there. Yes, there were a few spider webs high under the roof but hey you stay right in the nature so that can be expected. ;-) The bathroom is not that big but offered enough space for all of our things with the built-in closet. Plenty of small and large fluffy towels were there and Ruth asked us several times if we needed more. The bedrooms also fitted our needs although the second bedroom might be to small for 2 people. It has a huge bed but just limited space for clothes so it might be to cozy for 2. But for me alone it was pretty perfect ;-) Forbes Landing is a 15-20 minutes drive up from Campbell River along a highway that is not used from many cars. Along this highway you already find Elk Falls Provincial Park with several Trails (Canyon View Trail for example), the stunning Elk Falls Suspension Bridge, McIvor Lake with several sandy, lonely beaches and not to forget the Quinsam River with its flyfishers and salmon hatchery. We did all that and enjoyed it so much. Campbell River in our opinion is a perfect place for a long stay because you can reach so many attractions in short time. For example it's close to Miracle Beach, Ripple Rock Trail, to Strathcona Provincial Park with amazing Trails like Paradise Meadows, Battleship Lake, Helen McKenzie Lake and many more. So after short drives you can reach all of these and have enough things to do for a couple of weeks. We splitted our days into hiking within the first half and relaxing within the second half of the day and it was just the perfect combination. There are also plenty of good restaurants down in Campbell River nearly all of them with awesome seafood which we tried several times. 3 big supermarkets provide you with everything you need for cooking your own meals. We did that also a lot and enjoyed the big gas BBQ on the terrasse. Last but not least: The owner Ruth, her assistant Megan and Co-host Lisa were great. They answered qucik to all of our questions before and during the stay. They gave us great tips for trails, restaurants and stores and we really felt welcomed every day. Ruth lives on the property in her own house and offered us to stop by for any questions or help we might needed. As I wrote above: if heaven was a place on earth, it could be Forbes Landing - and we can absolutely recommend that place.

  • Great location a few km from Elk Falls and Campbell River centre . Good communication from host and facilities including kayaks and canoes.

  • Our second stay at the cabin - fantastic views, the lake is hard to beat in the summer, there is a BBQ, and communication was fast. Highly recommended.

  • Wonderful cabin in fabulous location. We were only able to stay for 2 nights as the cabin was fully booked but would happily stay there much longer. The view from the cabin deck looking out at the lake was simply stunning. Access to the lake and use of kayaks and canoe were an added bonus. The cabin was comfortable and well equipped. Only wish we could have stayed longer!

Our cozy lodge is nestled in the woods just outside Sayward on British Columbia's beautiful Vancouver Island. It is the perfect place to relax after a day of adventuring, skiing, hunting, or working. Our options cater to all travelers. Choices range from a deluxe room with a fireplace and en-suite bathroom to affordable hostel beds. Whether you're looking for a place to vacation, a location for a retreat, or a place to unwind after a day of work locally, we have what you need.
Price listed is for renting all 9 guest rooms. I did not list it as a "whole house" because we also live here. Rooms are also available separately, with access to all common areas.
Abundant opportunities for excitement and relaxation start at our front door. There is a small waterfall onsite, and elk often visit our lawn. You can walk to the Salmon River from our door, and there are a wide range of hikes nearby. Canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hunting, paddle boarding, golfing, cross-country and downhill skiing, whale watching, or even just admiring some huge trees, it's all accessible from right here.
  • We had a wonderful stay with Julie at the lodge! We had a group of 13 and couldn't have been happier. The space was clean, the hosts were accommodating, and the surroundings beautiful!

    Jen2017-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • Out stay at the hostel was exactly what we wanted and more! Thirteen friends and I rented the whole hostel for the long weekend. With clean bedrooms, 2 kitchens, a massive great room full of games, dog run with beautiful water fall right outside the back door. Julie and her family were also amazing! Answering any questions we had when needed and making us feel right at home.

The lake right outside your door is stunningly beautiful..We paddled the kayaks and made a fire outside to watch the sunset. The hosts are very accessible and not at all in your business. We felt at home.

  • This might be the best Airbnb I've stayed at yet. Upon finding this place, I quickly realized that it is only accessible by boat or float plane, and the entire island only has a few inhabitants. So, that sounded great, and I booked it immediately. It turned out to be even better than I imagined. As our boat pulled into the bay, we were greeted by Mark and his dog, Tulip. Mark was super helpful, friendly, and accommodating. We got to talk to him quite a bit and learn about his experience. Everything in the bay was built by him with the help of volunteers that visited, and they had done an amazing job. Each building clearly had a lot of thought and care put into it, and felt extremely cozy. The natural beauty of the bay is spectacular. There's a large open clearing where the houses are, and around it is just forest, mountains, and water. There are no roads, no cars, and practically no people. It was a great feeling to wander and explore in such a remote place. And of course, I have to mention Tulip -- she might deserve the best dog ever award. She joined us on all of our adventures around the island, and was simply a wonderful presence. Shoal Bay is an absolutely stunning place, and it is no surprise that Mark decided to settle here. If you are looking to get away somewhere truly special, I can't recommend this enough.

    Yuriy2019-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • Shoal Bay and the paradise that Cynthia and Mark have built is simply wonderful. We had a relaxing 6 days hanging out in the bay, cooking, paddling, hanging with our lovely hosts and playing with their dog, Tulip. The cabin was comfortable and charming - with incredible views from the porch... and even from bed! The bed was super comfy and we took many naps. Can't wait to visit again!

    Stu2017-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • The place was beautiful, extremely comfortable, relaxing, and better than we even hoped. The hosts were extremely attentive and made us feel very welcome. They also gave us as much privacy or space as we wanted. The hosts run a "pub" for dock and cabin guests each evening which allowed us to have a beer or cocktail and talk with interesting visitors. The overlook/gold mine trail was just right for a short exercise and island excursion. We HIGHLY recommend this experience.

  • My husband Steve stayed with Julie and her family for three nights. She was most helpful locating public transport alternatives to car hire. You may have thought the latter a must but no, and involved much more adventure. The setting was perfect with wildlife birds and very friendly people. All very well equipped for self catering. Purchase your provisions in Port McNeill or Campbell River if not eating out. Absolutely recommended for nature lovers and wildlife adventurers.

Both hosts were welcoming and helpful and Andrea's breakfast was delicious. We really enjoyed our stay and would like to return here again.

  • This place is AMAZING! It is beautifully scenic and rustic, but has everything you need for a comfortable stay too. Andrea and her partner were the perfect hosts, and were very accommodating for my dietary requirements for breakfast (which was super delicious). The house is gorgeous and having the river right beside it with salmon jumping and chairs to read and relax in was great. The bedroom was spacious and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was spotless and we were given towels. It was great to get some authentic recommendations from the hosts of what to do in the area etc as it was a pretty quiet town. They were very friendly and happy to answer any questions we had. They have a beautiful dog and cat who roam the grounds and guard the chickens. We were allowed to walk around the whole estate which was lovely. All in all, a top experience and all I wish is thay our stay was longer! I hope we can return someday to this beautiful slice of paradise :-) thank you guys!

  • This was the second time we stayed at Sue's farmhouse and this stay was just as good as the last. Wonderful old but beautifully decorated and furnished house, immaculately clean, really comfortable beds and wonderful breakfasts. And to top it all Sue's kitchen staff were really friendly too. Sadly the bear didn't make an appearance this time! We'd definitely recommend Sue's place.

  • We spent a weekend in a quaint and cozy cabin with great views of the water. The style is rustic rather than luxury, so expect “summer cabin” living, rather than marble countertop pampering. The location is awesome, right by the water. We took full advantage of the access to kayaks and canoes, and loved paddling around the bay. We also enjoyed a late night fire pit evening under a starry sky. Although described as “two bedroom”, the second floor was more akin to a loft, with the front and rear areas separated by a half wall, rather than two actual separate bedrooms. Beds were comfortable, and the bathroom and kitchen were stocked and supplied with everything we needed. The shower was good, with good water pressure and temperature, but some may find the height of the shower head a bit low. I am 5’8”, and had to crouch a bit. The cabin is connected to a few other cabins, almost townhouse like, but each cabin was quiet with separate entrances. We had two balconies that overlooked the bay. What a great location! In our time there, we saw many deer and bald eagles, and in our travels around the island saw sea otters, sea lions, starfish, and even an octopus!
