Your guide to Porirua

All About Porirua

Just a few miles north of Wellington on the southern tip of the North Island, the port city of Porirua is home to a wealth of nautical activities, natural beauty, and an established art and history museum, Pātaka Art + Museum. The city has seen its fair share of changes over the years since its founding, and has been everything from a fishing hamlet to a thriving farming district and suburb of nearby Wellington. Today, Porirua melds the old with the new, with hip dining spots sitting alongside sacred Māori sites.

You can get your heart pumping at Adrenaline Park — where treetop pathways, rolling logs, and a vertiginous rope swing attract adventurers of all abilities. Head out on mountain biking tracks and pick from over 60 miles of coastal, bush, and rural walking routes. The climb up to Kaitawa Point at Whitireia Park is rewarded with spectacular views of Mana Island. More serene pastimes range from windsurfing and kayaking in the sheltered harbor to cruising past the pastel-hued boathouses in the bay.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Porirua

The best time to book a vacation rental in Porirua is between November and April, when temperatures are warm and there is minimal chance of rain. Ocean breezes also offer a cooling reprieve in the summer months (December through February), while spring (September through November) is also pleasant, providing the perfect conditions for exploring local hiking and nature trails and getting out on the water. Temperatures dip over the winter months (June through August), but snowfall is extremely rare.

Porirua and nearby Wellington are also home to a variety of events, including the Wellington Wine & Food Festival held in February — a celebration of the area’s thriving and innovative culinary culture with stalls and live music.

Top things to do in Porirua
