Places to stay in Leeu Gamka
My place is close to the N1 for a convenient stopover on the long journey from the North to the South. You’ll love my place because of the farm atmosphere. Sit outside in the evening and enjoy the millions of stars that Karoo is famous for. My place is good for couples, families (with kids), and furry friends (pets). This Flatlet is close to the main house.
  • Very clean and convenient stop over with everything you may need. Great value for money and perfect if you're travelling with fur kids.

  • A friendly Karoo welcome after a long day on the road with helpful hospitality. All we needed and very clean amenities. Hospitality that make you feel cared about and small unexpected extras made for a special stay at great value for money. We stopped at a farm-stall before and got some Karoo meat and a bottle of wine which we enjoyed under the beautiful Karoo sky watching the dancing flames on the barbecue. The rusks for breakfast was an unexpected pleasure from out olive farm hosts, Thank you

  • What a conveniently located midway stop for me between Cape Town and the lil Eastern Cape community I come from! Charlotte was not available with it being Christmas Eve the evening we stayed here, however she arranged that family members opened for us and they were super accommodating, even though it meant they had to step away from Christmas eve celebrations. Not only that, but we initially thought we'd only be arriving at the cottage between 11 and 12pm ON new Years eve and they had no problems with that. We also left before 6am the next morning and they had no issues with this either. It was HOT!! Wow! Leeu Gamka is hot! And there were lots of mosquito's, however, not to fear. The cottage is equipped with 2 aircons (1 in the main bedroom and 1 in the main living area),and mosquito coils were provided. The bathroom has a lovely big shower with good water pressure! With this area being in a very bad drought, just use water sparingly and perhaps bring your own drinking water. There is a lovely lil 'stoep' where you can sit and enjoy sundowners or a sunrise coffee. There is also shaded parking provided. Great value for money and would definitely stay over again if need arose.

Beautiful & comfortable heritage cottage in the historic town of Prince Albert. Quiet and peaceful surrounds, within walking distance to shops and restaurants. Large garden full of fruit trees and birds. Please note that most of our guests who book for one night regret not staying longer, so we do recommend longer stays if you have the time!
The Cottage is an original farm building, built in 1852. The building offers original features from this period, with a very beautiful bound latte ceiling throughout. There is an indoor wood-burning stove, outdoor weber braai, outdoor shower, and 'stoep' from where to enjoy an unspoilt view of the garden and Karoo mountains in the distance. The garden offers fruit to be plucked and eaten most of the year round. In the garden you'll find a mangoes, guavas, various citrus, quince, olives, mulberries, grapes, chillis, curry leaf, and apples. The Cottage is on the same property as The Farmhouse - both buildings are private and freestanding with uninterrupted views - but share the large garden.
Prince Albert really does offer something for everyone- be it stargazing, cycling, hiking, local cuisine, lazy braaing or art and architecture. Join the locals and drive out towards the Gamkapoort Dam for sundowners as you watch the sun set behind the dramatic Swartberg Mountains; take a hike in the Swartberg National Park with its dramatic mountain views, San art and hidden waterfalls, or take a cycle trail down the Swartberg Pass or along the 39km one way trail to the Gamkapoort Dam.  Spend an evening meandering through the town on a guided Ghost walk to learn about the quirky characters who haunt Prince Albert, taking in the local architecture and history on your way. There are plenty of restaurants to appeal to all tastes, and then make your way home to lie out on the lawn and stargaze at magnificent desert skies. Learn about desert flaura and fauna with guided nature and bird trails on offer, or wander at will through magnificent desert terrain. Enjoy pancakes and coffee at the Saturday morning market where you can meet locals and buy local produce. Do the Park Run and learn about initiatives to get local school children out running. Visit Gay's Guernsay dairy for award-winning local cheeses to accompany your sundowners. And don't forget the award-winning Francis Pienaar Museum, and the Prince Albert Art Gallery for a dose of history and culture.
  • The Cottage is a lovingly decorated and furnished historic settler's house in a quiet location and within walking distance of the central main street, where there are shops and restaurants as well as a gallery and museums. There is a small market on Saturday mornings where you can have a delicious breakfast. The house itself is perfectly equipped, has everything you need, such as espresso maker, blender, hair dryer, mosquito net, ... In addition, the house has a wonderful east-facing terrace with a clear view of the landscape and a great garden . We really enjoyed our very short stay.

  • A quirky little hideaway with something to discover around every corner. The outdoor shower will kick even the most highly-strung suburbanite straight into holiday mode. The hospitality gets 10/10 ... even the kitchen playlist (because awesome clearly comes standard) was suburb. Such a lovely experience.

  • This is one of the best places we have stayed during our visit is SA. Sparkling clean, great personal touches and all amenities that you need for a perfect stay!

    Patrick2020-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • Was actually only planned as a stopover between Cape Town and Addo. Is halfway and makes the trip possible in two tolerable stages. Didn't want to go there and back on the same route. Was worth it. Was actually a direct hit, both the scenic Karoo and the cute place Prince Albert as well as the wonderfully rustic house. What immediately stands out is the absence of electric fences. We felt very safe in the whole place. Tip 1: lunch break on the way there in Matjesfontein. English village from 1900 in the desert, including butlers and waitresses with bonnets. Tip 2: Stay two nights and walk around in town or cross the Swartberg Pass.

My place is close to National Road. You’ll love my place because of the outdoors space. My place is good for couples and families (with kids).
The house is clinically clean and neat. No noisy neighbors or dogs who will disturb the peace.
The guesthouse is 10km from the nearest town and 3km from a national road. Only the landlord and guests stay on the farm.
  • Relax and relax more in the fresh air of the Karoo! Breathtaking sunset and sunrises - you have to stay more than one night! The house has everything you might need... and the braai area was the place to be and relax! We will definitely be back soon!

    Annette2019-05-19T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect place to rest your tired head after a 1000km drive from JHB. Biggest braai area I have ever seen and the accommodation was impeccably clean. Excellent location to pop off and back onto the highway to continue our journey to CT. Would highly recommend you make this your next overnight stop!

    Craig2018-12-19T00:00:00Z
  • Near to the road but so quiet you didn’t know. The farm is lovely to walk around and it showcases the Karoo beautifully. We had a lovely Braai over the large fireplace on the patio.

    Patrick2018-12-16T00:00:00Z
  • This is such a convenient spot to stay over if you are travelling the N1. It is near the Highway, but far enough away to be very quiet and safe. The cottage is beautifully equipped with everything you need, and very clean and pleasant. The braai area is well situated and spacious. I would highly recommend it.

    Pat2018-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • Peace, quiet and a welcoming atmosphere coupled with a lovely, private and spotless house...not to mention the magnificent sunset viewed from the stoep.. ..we had a wonderful stay...well worth an extra night just to see the sunset again....

    Rhoda2018-03-25T00:00:00Z
  • The little farmhouse is just perfect. It is even nicer than on the photos with a spacious outdoor area and a perfect place to braai. The interior is decorated with a lot of love. Mari is an attentive host and very friendly. She spoiled us with homemade droeworst! You have a lot of privacy but you never feel left alone. We can definitely recommend this quiet place in the Karoo and hope to be back one day!

    Ralf2018-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • After a long and tiring drive from George airport, we were happy to locate Mari`s premises without trouble. It is close to the NI and well signposted. Having arrived on a Sunday,( alcohol is generally not sold across the counter on Sundays), I realised that the well-earned beer that I promised myself was, increasingly, becoming a pipe dream. Mari kindly produced a few bottles of cold beer, for which I will be ever grateful. The accommodation meets all reasonable requirements. It has air con, and a fan. It is clean, well laid out and we made use of the braai, area, despite the strong wind that blew that evening. I have spent all my working life in the hospitality business and would have no hesitation in recommending this stay for all tourists.

    Georgina2018-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our night in the Karoo. The cottage was sparkling clean and ideally equipped. We loved the rusks! Without doubt the cleanest b&b I’ve ever stayed in. Very conveniently located, the drive to Stellies in the morning was under 4hours. Mari’s place will not disappoint!

This oasis is paradise in the Karoo. We have created living spaces outside. ( we do have the normal lounge, dinning, kitchen, 1 full bathrooms and 2 bedrooms inside)
Guest can use outside space, we have 3 relaxing beds under the trees and braai area plus pool. All guest love to relax outside.
Nite stars are magnificent when the moon is not full. Rising of the moon at the same times as the sunset is a magical time too. Bicycle riding round the village late afternoon is a must. Ask Samson for a Bike to ride. Lying outside on the beds watching the stars. And eating outside in the cool air.
  • A nice stay in the desert in a big house with everything you need. Nice host and really nice relaxing stay for a week. Its a must in south africa. We enjoy it. Really thanks to Samson! We will remember everytime. The house is big and have all you need. The town is in the middle of nowhere and you have to be prepared with the food and water. Really noce place in south africa. Beutyful sunrise!

  • Olive's Den is a wonderful place to stay, with ample and comfortable accommodation and a very well equipped kitchen. The best is the outside shower !! Olive's Den is in walking distance from many of the restaurants, and also the Bush Restaurant where we enjoyed a great hamburger. Don't miss the Hansie Pienaar Museum and Guys Cheese place !! I can totally recommend Olivels Den, xxs Tory Elshove

  • Di’s guesthouse is private and secluded, while simultaneously being situated a stone’s throw away from the restaurants and shops in Prince Albert’s main road. We thoroughly enjoyed the shaded stoep, while the pool and air con offered essential relief during the hottest part of the day. Di was warm and friendly and we wanted for nothing. We’ll definitely be back!

Situated in a quiet and private part of town, The Aloe House has 2 cozy en-suite bedrooms, perfect for couples and small groups. Spacious kitchenette and lounge , fireplace, inside/outside dining and braai area, large veranda, private entrance , WiFi. Pets are welcome .
  • This is a very special place with a Wild West feeling. Very clean, comfortable, interesting details, furniture and objects made of antique or old natural wood by Peter, who is an artist with a vision and a lovely host. Off the beaten track, highly recommended for individualists.

    Bettina2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • Peter's house is located on the edge of the picturesque small town of Prince Albert. Although the gas station and supermarket are less than 300 meters away, the location is absolutely quiet. The house itself (we two people only had the ground floor) is spacious, both bedrooms had their own bathroom, everything was absolutely clean and we will remember the sunsets on the veranda for a long time. But the best thing was Peter himself: a very nice contemporary who helps his guests wherever he can.

    Klaus2020-02-04T00:00:00Z
  • Stunning location and wonderful chalet with unique character. Much nicer than it appears on the website - you’d be going somewhere very special

  • The Aloe Cottage sits quietly on the edge of town and so for us it was perfect. My mom could comfortably stroll around the farm, it was super quiet, and the sense of spaciousness is just awe-inspiring. We stayed in the quaint smaller cottage, which suited us really well, with the right mix of authenticity and comforts. Peter made my mom feel really welcome. She is 92 and so this was a true delight for her.

"The Old Surgery" is a great place to take some time out and recuperate or finish up that novel. It's set on a small holding on the edge of Prince Albert in walking distance of great restaurants, the town's Saturday market, local museum and art gallery. Eat from the massive vegetable garden that borders the cottage and hang out with the bunny, dogs, troupe of sheep, goats, turkey's and chickens that also call the property home. Beautiful light, warm neighbours and happy vibes.
Besides the studio itself - guests are welcome to wander in the veggie garden (and pick!) and through the small erf to feed the animals.
Check out www.princealbert.org for more about the town. It really is a special place!
  • Beautiful room with stylish touches and interesting decor. A wonderful escape from the big city! Definitely be back soon.

  • A beautifully curated and designed Karoo Scandi space with thoughtful touches and beautifully designed elements. • Charming little cottage, in the heart of Prince Albert. Megan welcomed us with in the property and was more than helpful and available for us if we needed everything. She also recommended some of the best tables in Town in Prince Albert. The place itself is very comfy, cute, and has all you need for a break away week end. We even had a bottle of cherry waiting for us on our arrival. Would come back anytime to escape the rush of the city. Thanks again for the warm welcome.

  • Where do we start? We actually thought we were in transit and thought the place was well located. We came to this wonderful place completely unexpectedly. Exceptionally nice, friendly people. Great architecture and lots of nice little shops and restaurants. And now for accommodation: WOW. Just beautiful. Super stylishly furnished, everything you need, sparkling clean, more than a bathroom and then this great outdoor area. Communication was great as was the check in and check out. We also felt very safe. We immediately felt at home and can only recommend the accommodation and the place to everyone!

  • Elfen House is an amazing home perfectly situated in Prince Albert. We altered our plans just to stay in Prince Albert and got a very quick response from Rene the day before, accepting our stay. Upon arrival we almost immediately decided to extend our stay, and we were lucky enough to be able to extend by a night! Communication with Rene was really good. She replied fast and answered all questions we had. She also sent us lots of information on things to do and places to eat in Prince Albert before our arrival which meant we could prepare. The house is stylish, clean, and tidy. The wifi is really good and the house has everything you could possibly need (and more). There's a great little bicycle rental place down the road. If you're a cyclist try hire a bike to cycle the Swartberg Pass! Thanks for your flexibility and hospitality!

The Karoo-style Cottage Suite sleeps two and is tucked away in the pretty gardens behind the main house at Casa Milorca, which was built in 1860 and is situated in one of Prince Albert's prettiest streets in the historic heart of the town. The cottage has a king-size bed with quality white bed linen, and there is an en suite bathroom with shower, as well as a compact lounge and dining area. The kitchenette area has washing up facilities, a toaster, kettle, microwave and bar fridge, and basic kitchen utensils. There is also a tea and coffee station with home-baked rusks. The Cottage Suite, which has its own private verandah, can also be configured with two single beds instead of a king-size bed. Thanks to air-conditioning the cottage is cool in summer and warm in winter; there is also has a standing fan if that is preferred.

  • What a lovely place to stay at! Between Louise, Salvelio and Estelle, it is a hospitality combo made in heaven. The place was clean and so was the pool which is a great bonus in the hectic heat this time of year! The garden is kept and it is simply a beautiful environment to be in. They were very accommodating with a request that we had and even though there was a bit of a spat with a noisy dog next door, it was sorted out immediately...excellent communication!! We will, without a doubt, recommend this place. What a wonderful experience it was!! Thank you guys! William & Zoë

Small touches such as milk from the local dairy and delicious home made rusks were a welcome treat. The Aircon was a lifesaver in the heat!

  • Such a great spot. Prince Albert is a wonderful historic town and this place was so fab. Super comfortable, great hospitality, an amazing pool for those hot summer days. Just a pity I only stayed one night

  • The OIive Pip is a cosy little outbuilding that has been very tastefully converted into a self-contained, single bedroom cottage, with an en-suite shower room and a partial kitchen (there's a fridge/microwave/kettle but no cooker or kitchen sink). It shares a lovely swimming pool and a beautiful tree-lined garden with the Olive Grove Cottage, which is about 20 metres away across the lawn. It was a hot weekend when we were in Prince Albert, and we enjoyed sitting out on the covered veranda. Dee was a fabulous host.

Vine Cottage is centrally located in Prince Albert within easy walking distance from the main road, Church Street, with its restaurants, museum, art galleries and shops. The house is comfortably equipped and there is space to relax, have a barbecue or a dip in the tiny pool. Although the house sleeps 6 and is equipped for 6 people, the living and dining areas are better suited for 4 people for longer stays. Please contact me for reservation availability or if you have any questions.
The house was built around 1900 and every attempt has been made to keep the original features of the house intact, including timber strip floors, sash windows and exterior shutters. The high ceilings lend an air of space. Due to the age of the house, sometimes the floors creak, the windows rattle and the plumbing talks back ;-) The house was named 'Vine Cottage' for the two grape vines that covered the back stoep. Sadly, due to a prolonged and severe drought and higher than normal temperatures, the vine has all but died, and has been replaced by a patio covered by 'latte' (see photographs). There are three bedrooms. Bedroom 1 (an addition to the original house) has a double bed with en suite shower and an air conditioner. Bedroom 2 has two single beds and guests can use the bathroom (shower) off the back stoep. Bedroom 3 has a queen-size bed and en suite bathroom with bath. There are mosquito nets above the beds in all the rooms and fans in bedrooms 2 and 3. A private splash pool (approx. 1m X 2m) is ideal for cooling down during the hot summer months and the shaded back patio has a barbecue facility for al fresco dining. The sitting room has a sofa and three chairs and is semi-open plan to the kitchen with a dining table suitable for 4. The kitchen is well equipped with cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery for 6 people.
The town of Prince Albert is more than 250 years old and as such there is a wide range of architectural styles visible. The best way of getting around in town is walking. There are a number of restaurants, a museum, art gallery, dairy and hotel as well as shops selling local products. Farms in and around the town produce wine and olive products as well as fruit in season. My favourite dessert wine comes from Soet Karoo, located opposite the hotel in Church Street. Don't miss the Saturday morning market next to the tourist office. Two attractions in the area are the Swartberg Pass and Meiringspoort. These are the two gateways to get south to Oudtshoorn. Both of these routes are well worth the drive, offering spectacular natural scenery. More adventurous guests can go to 'Die Hel' or Gamkaskloof which is a 2 to 4 hour drive from the top of the pass preferably using a high-clearance vehicle (this road is closed as of January 2020 due to a devastating fire; please enquire if you would like to visit). The area is well-known to birders and a slow drive on the 'Kruidfontein' road can easily deliver 50 species. Sitting on the house back patio you could also hear and see anything from Cape White-eye to Malachite Sunbird and Acacia Pied Barbet. Recently there were also Garden and Marsh Warbler nearby.
  • Very nice place. Google gave the wrong directions, but the host came to fetch me and was in constant communication. House was lovely.

  • We were not expecting to enjoy Prince Albert as much as we did. What an absolutely lovely, relaxing place to visit. Vine Cottage is classy, relaxed, simple, charming, authentic. Ideal for us and a simple walk from the cottage to the restaurants and cafes of the main street. Just one thing to watch out for - there weren't black out blinds so whilst our kids were fine and undisturbed, I am a light sleeper and woke quite early, so I took advantage of the opportunity and went for a run.

    John2019-11-01T00:00:00Z
  • We slept like logs! A super stay, and we had everything we needed. What a lovely spot to cuddle up at after our Meiringspoort half-marathon. The town is packed with the most amazing eating places and beautiful little spots. Thank you, Charles!

There are restaurants and a supermarket within walking distance and there's lots to do in Prince Albert - the Showroom Theatre, a museum, art galleries, guided tours and Ghost Walk, shops stocking local arts and crafts and produce. In the district there are wine, olive and fig farms and scenic drives into and across the Swartberg Mountains... or simply stay put at Karoo Scense and relax. Brita offers Reiki in the Healing Cave at Karoo Scense and there is a yoga studio across the road.
You will feel like you are in the country, yet a few minutes' walk takes you to our main road, shops and a few minutes more to some excellent restaurants.

Great place to stay for longer periods as well. Jude & Bryan are wonderful hosts. If you have the opportunity to go there, do it, you won’t regret it!

  • Prince Albert is a nice town with restaurants, galleries and shops. The cottage was a big surprise. It is hidden behind the main street. The inner garden with small swimming pool was a welcome end to the day. The interior of the cottage is comfortable, fresh and stylish with various local objects. In the restaurant at the neighbors, the food is tasty.

The Main Suite sleeps two and is one of two spacious suites in the main house. It has a king-size bed with quality white bed linen, and if you prefer the suite can also be configured with two single beds instead. This suite has luggage racks, a hairdryer, and a tea and coffee station with home-baked rusks. A standing mist fan is ideal for hot summer nights while a heating panel and cosy quilt ensure a toasty winter. We also provide swimming towels.
The house boasts many of the original features associated with the Victorian era, including a bell-cast verandah in the front, sash windows, high ceilings and gleaming Oregon pine floors. There are two spacious suites in the main house, each with clawed bath and shower, as well as a separate cottage suite with shower, living area and its own quaint verandah. Mountains. The pretty garden, three verandahs and sparkling splash pool are there for guests’ enjoyment and there is also a cosy lounge and reading room should the weather be chilly. The name Casa Milorca is a playful nod to Salvelio’s Latin origins (his mother hails from Salamanca in Spain, where he studied fine arts and lived for many years) and the couple’s two black cats, Mila and Lorca. The Karoo was a natural choice as Salvelio’s South African father was born in nearby De Rust, and Louise and Salvelio have spent much time exploring this ancient and captivating region of South Africa. They have fallen hopelessly in love with Prince Albert and know you will too!
Prince Albert is a quaint Karoo town at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains. If you want to get away from the mad rush of the city and spend a few days relaxing in one of the most scenic areas South Africa, then this is the place for you.

Komkyk is a quaint 2 bedroomed cottage that oozes charm and character. It was originally the only small general store, but now a unique cottage that is comfortable to sleep 4 persons: double bed in the main bedroom and 2 single beds in the second. The cottage has a small kitchen that invites you into the cottage, with a single bathroom and shower annexed as well. There is a large lounge fulled with books and various treasures commanded by a bright red piano to add to its character! The kitchen is equipped for self catering, and to “Braai (BBQ)”. The unit is service by a warm and welcoming Malawian called Samson - certainly unique in the Karoo. We welcome you to stay, relax and enjoy something different in the Great Karoo.
The stars, peace quiet and silence is why we love Merweville. The clean air and bright skies, the stars that fill the night skies. Beautiful sunsets with the moon rising opposite at the same time. The sunrise with the quiet cool mornings. Sitting outside at the braai area and just stopping and taking life as it should be.... peaceful quiet and easy.
  • This little cottage in the heart of the karoo, was perfect - the house is preserved perfectly with modern touches to make the stay comfortable - we only stayed one night as we were passing through but I would definitely come back and stay a day or two, for the full karoo experience. Leila and family was extremely accommodating as we only arrived at 23:00 and Samson waited for us to give us the key. It is very safe and comfortable. Definitely a must 😊

  • Sally is a wonderful host. She is friendly, welcoming and open. The room is really comfortable with a good quality mattress and linen, and is beautifully decorated. The bathroom is well appointed, clean and stocked with towels. Though there is no kitchen, the room does have a little fridge and tea/coffee facilities and the restaurants of Prince Albert are in walking distance from the house. So for a short stay you don't need more. I also appreciated the fact that Sally provides proper coffee, rusks and fruit to start your day. Sally also has a well-kempt garden with a pool that she invited me to enjoy. I had a great stay at Sally's place and would recommend it to anyone.
