Great check-in experience

Recent guests loved the smooth start to this stay.
Whale Huys is a Self-catering, direct oceanfront villa with panoramic views of Walker Bay and the Klein Rivier Mountains. Perfect for a relaxing holiday away, just 2 hours from Cape Town. With its stunning views and just the sounds of nature, Whale Huys seems far removed from the busy hustle and bustle of our daily lives. but is close to the wineries and renowned country restaurants the area is famous for. Outdoor and cultural activities abound. Just 5 min. from Gansbaai for shopping.

The space
In Nature, with nature
With its open plan living area the house combines a spacious rustic feeling with all modern conveniences. The thatch roof and 7 meter high atrium keeps the villa cool even on the hottest of days. With stupendous views from every room, there are various cozy areas on all three floors to relax, look out over the sea. Or you can cuddle up next to the fireplace on cool winter evenings.

Tread Gently in Nature
Set in nature, it's only logical that we have done what we can to reduce our impact on nature. The Villa's water is heated by solar geysers and is powered by solar PV panels (with a grid and battery back-up, so you never have to worry about the lights going out or a cold shower). But our respect for nature goes further, including things like our grey water irrigation system, eco-friendly cleaning products and our low energy appliances.

Our eco-friendly approach doesn't mean we have compromised on comfort. The gourmet kitchen has state-of-the-art appliances and all rooms have USB chargers and blue-tooth speakers. The villa also has an alarm system with 24/7 direct response for your peace of mind.

ENTRANCE LEVEL
The main entrance to Whale Huys is on this floor. The living/dining room space is open plan. The central atrium area has 7+ meter ceilings. Glass sliding doors and a balcony that extends over the length of the house. This provides views of the ocean from three sides. There is a large flat-screen TV, (DSTV Premium, Showmax) and a DVD Player.
The modern gourmet kitchen with a cooking island featuring all new appliances an induction stove-top (Smeg) and full-size oven (Smeg). Additionally, there is a microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, food processor, and large refrigerator with ice and water on tap. There is also a double sink and a separate tap for filtered water. The kitchen is further well equipped with utensils, plates, glassware and cutlery even for large groups, Next to the kitchen there is a small office area with a laptop for doing emails or surfing the web.

The master bedrooms is also on this floor with its private balcony. It has built-in cupboards and an en-suite bathroom with double sink, large walk-in shower and separate toilet.
There is a guest toilet on this level as well.

POOL LEVEL
One flight down from the entrance level, the pool level features a smaller kitchen/bar with refrigerator, and an outdoor braai area. There is an indoor dining area and a smaller quiet seating area at the far end with a small sofa and chair. There is also a fitness area on this level with exercise bike, rowing machine, weight machine, yoga mat. This level opens directly onto the spacious eco-wood deck and the infinity pool. It’s perfect for a relaxed sun-downer watching the sun sink into the ocean. Next to the pool is the braai (BBQ) area with built-in braai. There is also an outdoor shower on this level.
UPPER LEVEL
There are three bedrooms on this level, each with its own bathroom and balcony. Two bedrooms are to the left of the stairs, while a wooden walkway across the atrium area connects to the third bedroom. Two of the upstairs bathrooms have showers and one has a bathtub as well as a separate shower. One of the unique aspects of the villa is that all bedrooms have ocean views in two directions. All bedrooms have built in white-washed cupboards, wall-mounted fans and luggage racks.

Guest access
The villa is rented as one unit, so guests have exclusive access to all spaces including the swimming pool, braai (bbq) area, and gym.

Other things to note
The pool is cleaned on Wednesday morning, usually about 9. You don't need to be home, but just so you aren't surprised when you see people near the pool.

Garbage and recycling is picked up early on Tuesday morning from the rack at the top of the driveway.

Where you’ll be

De Kelders, Western Cape, South Africa

De Kelders is one of the quietest and safest communities on the Whale Coast. The fishing town of Gansbaai is just seven minutes away with supermarkets, banks, a gym, and many cafes and restaurants. Stanford, a small town renowned for its quaint boutique restaurants is 10 minutes by car. For a larger variety of shops Hermanus is just 25 minutes away on the other side of the bay.
The area is rich in culture and things to do. Elim, a world heritage village, is 30 minutes away. Active adventures also abound, including wilderness and beachside horseback riding (African Horse Company is just 10 minutes away). South Africa's shark cage diving capital, Kleinbaai, is just 10 minutes away and now also features a penguin sanctuary. In fact, you can see all of the ‘Marine Big 5’ within a 15 minute radius of the villa, and most of them right from the villa.) A number of wine estates in the area offer some of the best red and white wines of South Africa including the Hemel en Aarde valley, the Stanford Valley, and Lomond wines. Wine tasting can be done six days, and in some places 7 days a week.

I have always loved traveling - exploring new places, meeting new people and speaking new languages. I grew up in the US but have lived on four continents, but mainly in Amsterdam where my mother is from. I first visited Southern Africa 20+ years ago, and was taken by the warmth of the people and the beauty of the natural environment. After ten years, my partner and I took the step of buying a house in South Africa in 2014 (Whale Huys).
