The space
Bushbaby Suite B&B offers guests a large, well-appointed bedroom with twin beds, decorated with a combination of Cape Dutch and Indonesian furniture and objets d’art. The bedroom leads onto a spacious deck that overlooks green lawns, lush gardens and mature trees. There is a sweeping vista down to the shores of Da Gama Dam and across a vast expanse of water, which meets soaring hillsides of eucalyptus plantations and an eastern skyline.

Where you’ll be

White River, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Bushbaby Suite forms part of the former home of two iconic and legendary Lowveld artists, Heather and Tony Hull, whose legacy is intertwined with the history of tourism in this beautiful part of Mpumalanga. Together they started Cybele Lodge in 1975 (originally a coffee farm), transforming the 100-year-old homestead into a guest lodge. In 1980, Heather and Tony sold Cybele and moved to Johannesburg, where they ran the popular Courier Restaurant for 10 years. They then returned to Mpumalanga, and built Hulala Lodge on the peninsula of Da Gama Dam. Their enduring legacy includes a magnificent lakeside arboretum and landscaped gardens. Heather and Tony were not only artists but keen naturalists and conservationists as well. Their scientific endeavours included studies of animal bones and mineralogy – as well as a fascination with reptiles. As a result, their former home boasts eclectic collections of bones, rocks and realistically preserved snakes. Sadly, both Heather and Tony have passed away. However, their daughter Loli has an abundance of stories to share with you, should you wish to learn more about the home of two of the true pioneers of the Lowveld.

I have been living and working in the beautiful Lowveld for most of my life. I owned and managed a restaurant in White River for many years. After I sold the business, I ran a shop in the town that sold furnishings and artefacts from Bali. It was sold many years later. I now look after my house and garden and am actively involved in helping to manage the Hulala Lakeside Estate.

During your stay

When you reside at Bushbaby Suite, be prepared to meet the locals! A very friendly family of Bushbabies have moved into the large trees surrounding the house. You are most welcome to join Loli when she feeds the “Bushies” a mix of bananas, bread and honey each evening – and to help her keep the opportunistic Vervet Monkeys and Banded Mongooses away! You may also glimpse the two resident Bushbuck, which browse on the flowers and shrubs close by, or wake up to Fish Eagles calling. Birdlife abounds – and who knows, you may even get to see a Cape Clawless Otter at the dam’s edge as well.
We hope too that you will enjoy the company of Loli’s loyal companion, an 11-year-old Jack Russell called Pippa. She is a most friendly canine.
