Perhaps the highest stone cottage, at 1200m atlitude, in the Cederberg with spectacular views of the Koue Bokkeveld to south and the Cederberg mountains to the east. It is set against a mountain peak surrounded by pristine Cape flora. A place of retreat and deep silence.
The cottage with its beautiful woodwork and wooden floors and stonework belongs to another era.
The ideal stay is three nights which gives one two full days to walk and appreciative the pristine landscape.

The space
The cottage is one large room with two wooden 3/4 daybeds with good mattresses and linen. There is a hotbox fireplace in the corner for the cold winter nights, and plenty of wood. The kitchenette has a small fridge and two hot-plates. The bathroom has an indoor shower and there is also an outdoor bath on the verandah.

There is a spring with a picnic spot about a 40 minute walk down a steep jeep track. The peak of Middelberg (1565m) is towers about the spring and is a 3-4 hour walk to the top. The mountain immediately behind the cottage at 1417m is takes about an hour to climb, and there are also many shorter walks in the area.

Guest access
Guests are welcome to walk in the mountains and valleys of the farm.

The farm is situated at the top of the Middelberg Pass, half an hour’s drive out of Citrusdal. The southern region of the Cederberg is similarly spectacular as the central Cederberg although perhaps greener and wetter in the winter months. Because of the altitude there is always a breeze and it is seldom that there is a baking hot day.

After many years of living in Cape Town and working and travelling in the art world, I now live on a protea farm the Cederberg mountains. The seaside bungalow in Bakoven and the stone cottages on the farm are filled with pieces of art as well as artifacts collected over the years in the Himalayas.
