My work: Reserve manager at Sandberg Fynbos Reserve
Lives in Baardskeerdersbos, South Africa
I am a friendly person who love to meet new people and visit new places ...... I like other human beings and have NO hangups regards to gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religious (or not) outlook in life. I respect people and thrive on mutual recognition and respect. I am a white, Afrikaans speaking man and had my forming years in the days of the evil apartheid system of forced segregation in South Africa. Luckily I grew up on a farm with a diverse group of people, teaching me to ignore stupid political ideologies and rather seeing the human beings. I am a reserve owner and steward of 700 hectares of near pristine Fynbos veld. (Fynbos is the smallest and most diverse of the plant biomes of South Africa) Sandberg Fynbos Reserve is one of the botanical 'hot spots' in the Western Cape and boasts rare Orchids, Disa's, some interesting mouse pollinated ground proteas and the exquisite, pure white Erica penduliflora, locally known as 'Paas-heide' (Afrikaans for Easter heath). Sandberg Fynbos Reserve is also home to the rare Fynbos endemic bird, Turnix hottentottus, the 'Hottentot button quail'. My work and ultimate hobby is gardening on a very big scale here at the reserve. When you come and visit, you are likely to meet me with a spade in hand! I am busy developing the reserve as a nature tourist destination for people to hike, botanize, do birding or stay the night in a variety of accommodation options. Watch this space! I am active in local conservation issues, with a focus on environmental education. I often guide groups of youth on the reserve as well as in our local Agulhas National Park, introducing them to the magic and services of nature. In this part of the country, people pick protea cut-flowers from nature and over the years, some species have been picked to near extinction. During the last two decades I contributed to develop educational materials and offered many 3 day courses on 'Sustainable harvesting of wildflowers' to the local flower pickers and farmers. My life partner lives in Stellenbosch and we commute weekly to spend some days together during the week. We also love travelling to exotic destination together for our holidays. I am a lacto-ovo pescatarian, preferring simple organic food. (I grow some of my own food at the reseve) I love a glass of good red wine in the evenings, believing it might keep me 'young'! As a guest in your establishment I will be quiet and respectful of other guests, you and your house. I like my privacy and prefer quieter establishments with some green space to ground me.
