The "Downstairs at the BGV" has always been about safety and cleanliness. Now that's a little more enhanced. With Covid-19, getting away has a whole new feeling. Newport VT, in the NEK, is a great place to go. Right on the Canadian border this little City is surrounded by all the things you're looking for, without the crush of people. Come explore, stay & visit family, or friends, or do business. "Downstairs at the BGV" looks forward to welcoming you!

The space
This private suite on the first floor, below the "Big Green Victorian - Upstairs" apartment, offers a large comfortable living room, complete with Cable, DVD, WiFi, and a '60's record player, with vinyls. The bedroom has a Queen-size bed and attached bath (with linens, towels...). A private screened in porch offers an additional social area (depending on the weather!).

The temperature in the suite is 68 degrees with high ceilings. Sitting and watching television or reading or ... may be a bit chilly, but there are plenty of lap blankets. But you might want to bring a sweater if you run cold. However, to date no one has commented on the temperature.

Some guests have commented that the bathroom is small. Perhaps. I like to think of it as being compact. It has all you need, tub/shower, toilet, sink, and a place to put things.
This is an old house with the original bathroom, which was for function not necessarily for comfort. And that, is part of its charm!

"Downstairs at the BGV" also has a microwave, and small refrigerator stocked with water. Fresh muffins and fruit provided on first morning of stay, with restaurant recommendations close by. As for coffee, there are three options available: 1. A coffee maker with Green Mountain Coffee can be placed in the space; 2. If you have pods, a Keurig can be placed; 3. If you like coffee but rather not make it, I can provide you with a carafe of fresh brewed coffee each morning (I get up early and it's not a problem at all). A device for boiling water can also be made available for those who prefer Tea.

There is an air conditioner in the living room window (placed generally around the first of June and removed mid October).

Guest access
Entrance to the suite is through the main (shared) hallway in the front of the house, then down the hall. Access to the suite is private. Keys provided at check in.

Other things to note
The house is centrally located making it ideal for those who just like to walk around and see historic buildings, churches, art galleries... We have a diverse selection of restaurants, which are amazingly good, with offerings ranging from Thai "Dusit Thai" to local craft beers and wines at "The Warehouse - Taps. Eats. Billiards". If pizza, subs, and frozen yogurt is what you are after try "Hoagies" & "Hogurt's Yogurt". If you are wanting Italian, then "Lago Trattoria" is where you'll want to dine. A short drive away, with an extensive menu and bar (Vermont Pie and Pasta) or for breakfast or lunch, you might consider (Roaster's Cafe and Deli) or the (Brown Cow).

Local breweries to visit are: Kingdom Brewery, about 15 minutes away and Farm Hillstead Brewery, about 40 minutes away.

30 minutes away is Jay Peak's Pump House Indoor Water Park.

"Downstairs at the BGV" is just 15 minutes from Derby Line if you are traveling for a Global Entry Review or to visit friends or family at the Haskell Library.

A note to all perspective Airbnb guests: The BGV does not use any type of surveillance technology, in any of the lodging areas. Your comfort and privacy is very important. Keeping you safe, secure, and respected is always a top priority.

Newport itself, sits at the southern end of Lake Memphremagog, an Indian name meaning (and fitting), "beautiful waters." From the "BGV" you're a 5-minute walk/ski to the lake where, if you have snowshoes or cross-country skis, can traverse in a variety of directions once the lake is frozen. Best to check before you proceed though. However, cross-country skiing on the bike path is permitted.

The top of the lake is in Magog, PQ (Canada), a charming, French Canadian city, 40 minutes away by car. Along the way, the trip takes you through some of the lovely Eastern Township communities providing a variety of seasonal offerings. A passport is required.

I think of myself as creative and eclectic. You’ll pick up on that when you arrive. My Airbnb offering is a comfortable combination of different time periods, ranging from the 1970’s to today. I was left a big house, with furniture in good condition, so it just seemed natural to put it to good use. Many of my guests have commented on how the furnishings create a sense of comfort, and welcome. Most of my professional life was in the service industry. Because of that, I enjoy finding ways to put people at ease, be comfortable, and want to return. I believe that being a good host means being happy yourself and then, making sure your guests are happy. The reviews and comments of my guests are always appreciated and taken to heart when preparing for new guests to arrive. My life, to date, has been filled with amazing experiences. I’ve always tried to live it being curious and respectful. If I had a life motto, it might be based on a quote of Robert Louis Stevenson, “The world is so full of a number of things, I’m sure we should all be as happy as kings.”

During your stay
I look forward to welcoming you personally, but your arrival is based on your schedule, not mine. I like to contact my guest prior to their arrival to explain how to get to my driveway and into the house. When you arrive, the house and the suite will be unlocked, and ready. Instructions about the keys and the doors are provided once you arrive.

As it is a big house, I live here as well. So, if you need something, I'm available and will do my best to help you.
