Some info has been automatically translated.
When we first opened our spot we were truly over the hills and far away... now the village has grown around us a bit, but the place can still feel pretty secluded. The architect-designed house mixes inside/outside space with plenty of room for family.. Explore wetland, river and the Langeberg mountains. With plenty of comforts this spot is paradise for children, dogs and a retreat for adults.

The space
The unique combination of stylish architect designed off-the-grid house with the wildness of the setting, mountain, wetland river and pool.

Guest access
Erf 26 Oorkant die Rivier is a tucked away rural retreat but the village of Suurbraak, an old mission station established in 1812, is well worth exploring. 15km from the tourist hub of Swellendam it is close to wine farms, historic buildings, potteries, galleries and nature reserves. Barrydale, also 15 km away is filled with interesting gift shops and delightful restaurants and places to stop for tea.
Bring your mountain bikes as The Grootvadersbosch right next door offers some awesome mountain bike trails. See: (URL HIDDEN)

Other things to note
The road after the river crossing can feel very uneven. It is safe though for even those in small cars as long as you drive slowly. Our swimming pond is not fenced so if you have small children you will need to be watchful. Also the path over the donga at the end of the river is fine for adults, and children will love it, but do keep an eye on them as they may slip on the crossing.

Where you’ll be

Suurbraak, WC, South Africa

The calm, the peacefulness. We love the neighborliness, the character of Suurbraak, the brass-band at Christmas time, the young men riding bareback through the village. The family life on the stoeps of the houses along the main road. The convivial Paradise Organic cafe with its excellent food. Communal swimming at the big swimming holes close to the village. The ability to retreat, yet be close to all the goings on of tourist Overberg.

Maggie grew up in the wilds of Ireland, Bridget in the wilds of the Eastern Cape. Suurbraak feels even better than home with the mountain walks, swims in the river and mountain pools and the general feeling of security and calm. And there is something for everyone, from mountain biking to bird watching to exploring the mysteries of the Grootvadersbosch Reserve.
