Mulligan's Retreat is an amazing home away from home. The check-in and -out process couldn't be easier. Britt and Julie have created such a warm, cozy, comfortable and relaxing place to unplug (no Wi-Fi) and recharge. The house is so well-appointed; they have thought of everything and all of the details make the stay so easy. Just bring yourself and a change of clothes. We spent most of our weekend on the front deck just staring out at the yard, trees and the river. There are a few houses on the road nearby, but our stay was so private that it felt like we had our own slice of river heaven. The pictures of the river don't do it justice. The house has its own river access and you go through a gate to your own private section of river with chairs and a covered picnic area. The firepit was so well stocked, but it was a little too windy for us to use it. We spent the days relaxing on a blanket next to the pristine river, so thankful to be able to come to such a restorative spot.

Charming house that truly felt like staying at Grandmom’s in the country. Large enough for a bigger family, 2 small families or a small group of friends. Lots of room to spread out. Kitchen was stocked with plenty of what would be needed for cooking meals. The surrounding area was beautiful. Perfect peaceful scenery for sitting on that front porch swing listening to the birds and watching calves chasing one another on the hillside. Freshly baked brownies were a thoughtful treat waiting for us when we arrived. Would definitely stay again.

Adorable home, clean and comfortable, had everything we needed. Has bonus firepit in backyard and perfect front porch for relaxing in evening. There were bookshelves with games, and children's books. Galax and surrounding areas are beautiful. Chea is a wonderful hostess and made us feel at home. Checked in with us to make sure we didn't need anything. Would absolutely come back and stay here. great place to stay for trail days 2025. 20 minutes to damascus even with 58 closed. clean and as described.

Our stay at the cabin was wonderful! It’s an easy drive to Sparta, NC or to Independence, VA. The views of the New River are amazing and there’s plenty of space to spread out on the property. We hosted a dinner with family that we have in the area; the deck/porch was a tranquil place to have dinner, view the river, and listen to the creek nearby. Our hosts communicated clearly, were exceptionally responsive, and are just very nice people. We hope to stay here the next time we visit the area. Thank you to our wonderful hosts!

We had a wonderful stay. That porch is EVERYTHING! The property is a way out of town so be prepared. As the description states it is an old schoolhouse with a lot of charm. There is no central air, so at first it seemed stuffy and humid in the home. Maybe it had not been rented in a while? Not sure...We were fine though! The kitchen is stocked very well. The beds were comfortable. We loved getting to speak with Darlene and meeting all the doggies!

What a beautiful location! The house was spotless and had everything we needed and more. This home is full of history which we found very interesting. We enjoyed the porches and watching the cows. We felt right at home and our trip was very relaxing. Thank you for sharing.

We had a great stay

We had three families vacation together that included 6 adults and 4 children. There was plenty of space for everyone. We enjoyed the pool and the hot tub each day. Ruth made sure both were cleaned and ready each day for us. Our first night we had pizza delivered since we all had traveled that day but then we cooked dinner each night after. We utilized the crockpot and air fryer the most. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed. The back porch was beautiful and we spent a lot of time there. The afternoon showers were peaceful to watch from the porch. The kids really enjoyed the TV room. They were able to spread out and relax in the evenings after dinner. Grocery shopping was easy and very close by the house. We didn’t venture outside the house other to grab groceries. The kids favorite part was when Ruth and Cowboy Sam stopped by with his horse April. He let each kid ride April. It was a nice surprise! Thanks for an amazing stay!

Claudia is a very responsive and helpful host. Cabin was clean and easily accessible. There was a bottle of wine waiting for us when we arrived which was very sweet, and cabin was nice and warm. We will definitely be back.

Me and my husband loved Mary’s place! It was spotless inside and the bed was increasingly comfortable. The pool and hot tub were both extremely clean as well. Mary also went out of her way to make us feel comfortable and welcome. It’s a beautiful area with lots to do but her home felt like a private sanctuary - I’ve already recommended it to a few of my family and friends :)

Down a long gravel road, outside of the small town of Independence, is a perfect getaway on the river. The owners, Dan and Jane, own an immaculate, new, 4 BR home that they have decorated in a way that feels more like an untouched piece of history. They are welcoming and gracious hosts, who have put every effort into making this a home away from home. The driveway is steep but manageable without 4WD. The one level living is perfectly set up with a massive front porch overlooking the magnificent New River. Each of the 4 bedrooms has its own bathroom, so convenient! The kitchen is perfect to cook, eat, gather and play. We enjoyed the proximity to tubing, waterfalls, and the town of Independence for fireworks on the 4th. Our family had no reason to leave this picturesque place and spent a day fishing and swimming in the cool, clear river across the street. Bring a book, a tube, or a kayak and simply enjoy this place like we did, Dan & Jane thank you for the R&R! This place is perfect!

The cabin is awesome, very well equipped and comfortable. We were 11 and 2 dogs and we had a beautiful time for Christmas and New years. Michelle is absolutely a great host, very flexible with check-in and check-out times and responded quickly and very nicely at all times. I would definitely recommend to anyone who wants a peaceful and great quality time. We had 5 teenagers and they absolutely loved being there watching movies and playing board games.

Nancy was super responsive, kind, and descriptive in instructions and everything we could have hoped for and even more was in the spacious yet cozy cabin. Kitchen was fully stocked with all cooking utensils, and needs for grilling or cooking inside .The porch and views were amazing and the property was well taken care of. Beds were comfy sheets were great, and books and games were much appreciated. We would definitely go back. Conveniently located for any Grayson Highland trips or just to get nestled away and far away from all the hustle, bustle and distractions in life! Thank you, Nancy

Great place to come to visit and relax. Love the location and love having the property around. Perfect place for a weekend getaway out in the country. Great place to bring your dogs and let them roam free.

This property was beautiful and super close to Grayson Highlands State Park. The house was clean and the kitchen was well stocked with all the utensils you could possibly need. We enjoyed the views of the firefly light show from the back porch. We wished we had time to enjoy the fire pit - it looked so cozy with cute adirondack chairs - but we were whooped from all the hiking we did.

We had a wonderful stay at Tommy’s Bearwatch Cabin in Mouth of Wilson, VA. The home was well- appointed with modern updates including laminated floors and a step-in shower. The refrigerator was very cold, and the gas stove worked well. The large kitchen sink made cleaning up easy. The water flowed freely and was very hot. Wall mounted streaming TV and internet worked well during our stay. The main bedroom had a nice view out to the woods and the French doors in the living room and bedroom allowed a pleasant flow of fresh air. The location is beautiful and was perfect, being just down the road from the entrance to Grayson Highland State Park. The driveway was steep, but even our low-profile sedan made the grade and allowed for turnaround at the top near the front entrance. Flossie was very responsive and made sure that we felt welcome and care free, and she had suggestions for places to eat and visit. A quiet place for a getaway at a higher altitude with cooler temps for hot summer days
