The new offering by the Cape Malay Food Market – a group cooking experience – taps into this concept of making cooking and eating fun. The 3 ½ hour group cooking experience includes a brief overview of Cape Malay Culture and Food, learning specialist cooking techniques and enjoying a sumptuous three course sit-down meal of traditional Cape Malay favorites. You will receive personal instruction and guidance by your host Zaida Tofie. The best way to learn is through hands on application and Zaida will be like your cooking doula - facilitating the birthing of your Cape Malay creations. Cape Malay Food was influenced by the Cape of Good Hope’s strategic location on the 15th century spice route and melting pot of displaced Asian, Dutch, Indian and French settlers, slaves and political exiles. Cape Malay dishes are therefore an eclectic blend of flavorful and aromatic spices with contrasting sweet-sour or sweet-chili tastes.

Born in Cape Town into a local Cape Malay family where everything revolves around food. I have had more than 35 years of experience cooking traditional Cape Malay favorites. Although I am a professional transport planning consultant I have always had a passion for cooking the unique flavors of our local cuisine. I opened a restaurant a few years ago in the Cape Quarter called The Cape Malay Food Market and have hosted multiple group cooking events to teach specialist techniques in a fun group environment.

Where you'll be
The best place to learn traditional Cape Malay cuisine is from a local in their home. The group cooking experience will be held in Zaida's home kitchen.
